The ILIAD Of HOMER. Translated by Mr. Pope

London:: Printed by W. Bowyer, for Bernard Lintott,. 1715 - 1720.. Folio. 11-1/2" x 7-3/4". All volumes are 1st Folio edition (Griffith 42, 50, 78, 96, 115, 119). 6 volumes.. Period full paneled calf bindings, with spine labels to vols 1, 5 & 6 only. PO gilt stamped name [I Phelipps Y] to front boards.. Label to vol. 6 chipped. Some wear to spines, and joints tender. though bindings overall sound & quite appealing. Minor worming to. margins of vols. 1, 3, 5 & 6. Some gatherings a little browned, as. often found. Short tear to Vol II ffep. Period pos to front eps.. Withal, a Very Good set in clean crisp condition.. Pope, one of the leading literary figures of early 18th C England, enjoyed social success as well, and could count among his friends such great literary figures as Swift, Gay, and Congreve and 'saw much aristocratic society.' Of his character, the D.N.B. comments 'there is, in fact, no more difficult subject for biography, especially in a compressed form.... The truest statement seems to be that he was at bottom, as he represents himself in the epistle to Arbuthnot, a man of really fine nature, affectionate, generous, and independent; unfortunately, the better nature was perverted by the morbid vanity and excessive irritability which led him into his multitudinous subterfuges.' It has been commented that Pope could Ôhardly drink tea without a stratagem.Õ His devotion to literature was unremitting, 'he might have rivalled Chaucer in one century, and Wordsworth in another. As it was, his poetry is the essence of the first half of the eighteenth century.' "Idolatry of classical models was an essential part of the religion of men of letters of the day. Many of them, however, could not read Greek, and the old translations of Chapman, Ogilby, and Hobbes were old-fashioned or feeble in style. Many translations from the classics had been executed by Dryden and his school. But a Homer in modern English was still wanting. Pope's rising fame and his familiarity with the literary and social leaders made him the man for the opportunity. However, the translation must be considered not as a publisher's speculation, but as a kind of national commission given by the elegant society of the time to their representative poet. The first volume, including the first four books of the 'Iliad,' was issued in June 1715. The next three volumes appeared in 1716, 1717, and 1718, the last volume of the 'Iliad,' delayed by ill-health, family troubles, and the preparation of various indexes, appeared in May 1720." . Illustrated with plates & maps.

A New and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great Britain on ye continent of North America containing Newfoundland, New Scotland, New England, New York, New Jersey, Pensilvania, Maryland, Virginia and Carolina. According to the newest and most exact observations

London: "Sold by H. Moll over against Deverux Court on the Strand", 1715. Copper-engraving, with period outline hand-colouring, on two joined sheets, overall size 41 1/2 x 24 7/8 inches. Expert restoration to the upper left side north of Lake Huron. Rare first issue of the famous Beaver map "One of the first and most important cartographic documents relating to the dispute between France and Great Britain over boundaries separating their respective American colonies ... The map was the primary exponent of the British position during the period immediately following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713" (Degrees of Latitude). The British colonies according to British claims are outlined in red, with the French outlined in yellow. All territory south of the St. Lawrence River and eastern Great Lakes is shown as British. Numerous notations relating to territorial claims, Indian tribes, the fur trade, and the condition of the land cover the face of the map. This map shows the early eighteenth century postal routes in the British colonies, and is frequently called the first American postal map. There are four insets, including a large map of coastal South Carolina, and a plan of Charleston. At lower left is a map of Florida and the Deep South, which is based on a map by Thomas Nairne, the Indian agent for South Carolina. The most striking feature is the large vignette which gives the map its popular name. It consists of an early view of Niagara Falls, with a colony of beavers at work in the foreground. Pritchard holds that the beaver "was an appropriate image for the North American map for two reasons: the animal's importance to the fur trade, and its industrious nature." Cumming, British Maps pp.6-12; Cumming, Southeast in Early Maps 158; Degrees of Latitude 19; Reinhartz, Herman Moll Geographer pp.18-36; Schwartz and Ehrenberg, Mapping of America pp.138, 144; Stevens and Tree Comparative Cartography, 55 (a, with variant imprint).

THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS, AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH, ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND; TOGETHER WITH THE PSALTER OR PSALMS OF DAVID

London: Printed by John Baskett ...and by the Assigns of Thomas Newcomb, and Henry Hills ..., 1715.. [20,380],23,[3]pp. terminating at 3A4. Folio (465 x 285 mm). Contemporary black gilt paneled armorial goatskin, heavily gilt extra, a.e.g., marbled endsheets. Engraved frontispiece. Text in double columns, printed in black and red, the whole ruled in red. Spine and upper spine quadrant of upper board restored with black calf, edges of text block smoke-darkened, with occasional shallow isolated penetration into margins, early repair on verso of frontispiece, tidemark in upper forecorner/quadrant of last three text leaves and endleaves, small mend on verso of title at top margin, occasional handsoiling and smudging, a few minor marginal nicks or short tears; in spite of these detractions, in the main a bright, crisp copy. One of two large folio printings of The Book of Common Prayer published by Baskett in 1715, this being the form that terminates at 3A4. This copy was associated with the family and descendants of Henry Clinton, seventh earl of Lincoln (1684 - 1728) and his wife Lucy, daughter of the first Baron Pelham. Inserted in the front are two conjugate sheets of paper (one blank), and laid in are two folio sheets of vellum (a bit stained along the top edges). The latter are occupied on three sides with a manuscript family record, written at various times and in various hands (including births, deaths, marriages, etc) from 1744 through the death in 1794 of Henry Fienes Pelham Clinton, Duke of Newcastle. The first of the inserted paper leaves is of perhaps greater interest, as it bears a fifteen line manuscript account by White Kennett, Bishop of Peterborough, signed and with his seal, of his baptism at the Parrish of St. James, in Westminster, on 12 February 1718/19, of the Clinton's first son, George, for whom "His Excellent Majestie King George was Graciously Pleased to do this Honour ... to stand Godfather in his own Royal Person and to give him His own Royal Name of George...." Apart from his clerical responsibilities, Kennett (1660 - 1728) was an active antiquary, with particular interest in events in North America. He assembled a large and important library, and based on that collection, compiled the first attempt at a catalogue of books on North America: BIBLIOTHECAE AMERICANAE PRIMORDIA. AN ATTEMPT TOWARDS LAYING THE FOUNDATION OF AN AMERICAN LIBRARY.... London, 1713. His close friendship with Charles Trimnell, bishop of Norwich and one of George I's favorites, secured him the bishopric of Peterborough in 1718. GRIFFITHS 1715.1. ESTC T81463.

Beddie 1552; Forbes Hawaiian National Bibliography 85; Sabin 16250. KIPPIS, Andrew (1725-1795). The Life of Captain James Cook. London: Printed for G. Nichol and G.G. J. and J. Robinson, 1788. Quarto (11 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches). Half title, 1p. author's advertisements at end. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Cook by Heath, unsigned but after Nathaniel Dance. Contemporary tree calf, covers bordered with gilt rules, rebacked to style uniform to the above. Beddie 32; Hill (2004) 935; Holmes 69; Kroepelien 647; Lada-Mocarski 40; O'Reilly-Reitman 455; Sabin 37954. 4 works in 11 volumes. Text: uniform tree calf, expertly rebacked to style, spines gilt in compartments, red and green morocco lettering pieces in the second and fourth. Atlas: expertly bound to style half marbled calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards. A fine complete set of first editions of all three of Cook's great voyages of discovery, bound with a first edition of Kippis's biography . The first and third voyages are present here in their traditional form, but the second voyage has been bound into three quarto volumes instead of the more usual two. All the plates are bound in the third volume: an arrangement that is extremely unusual but eminently useable. In its usual two-volume form the plates of the second voyage can be quite unwieldy, but in this form the text and the images can be enjoyed simultaneously. "The famous accounts of Captain Cook's three voyages form the basis for any collection of Pacific books. In three great voyages Cook did more to clarify the geographical knowledge of the southern hemisphere than all his predecessors had done together. He was really the first scientific navigator and his voyages made great contributions to many fields of knowledge" (Hill). Cook's first voyage included visits to Tahiti and New Zealand, and the tracing of the east coast of Australia was one of the most perilous feats of navigation in the whole recorded history of exploration. The second voyage pushed further south in search of a southern continent than any previous navigators, as well as visiting numerous Pacific islands. The third voyage returned to islands previously visited, discovered Hawaii, and explored the northwest coast of America from Alaska to Oregon. The text of these official reports form an invaluable record of the voyages, but they are enhanced enormously by the 219 plates, maps, charts and views which include the work of one of the greatest cartographers of his day as well as images from the three most important artists to visit the Pacific during the eighteenth century. This set bound with a first edition of Kippis's biography, the first and most important biography of Captain James Cook. "Kippis's book, the first English biography of Cook, was intended to give a well-balanced account of his life from birth to death, including his family and early years, and the capacities in which he was engaged prior to the famous voyages. Cook discharged several important duties while aboard the Mercury, on the St. Lawrence River, during the siege of Quebec. The Newfoundland and Labrador surveys are discussed, and the three voyages are dealt with in great narrative depth" (Hill). In addition, Kippis reprints most of David Samwell's eyewitness account of Cook's death.
