Bernardi de Montfaucon Five engraved plates, two finely engraved headpieces, & several engravings in the text (some full-page). 12 p.l., 810 pp. (plus leaf 610*). Folio, cont. vellum over boards (one lower corner rounded), red leather lettering piece on spine. Paris: Guerin & Robustel, 1715. First edition of this monumental catalogue, compiled by Montfaucon, the eminent historian and founder of Greek paleography, of the magnificent collection of Greek MSS. owned by Coislin (1664-1732), French prelate. This has become a very scarce book. Most of the manuscripts come from the library of Pierre Séguier (1588-1682), the celebrated Chancellor of France and Coislin?s grandfather. "The manuscripts were given to the abbey of St. Germain des Prés in 1731. Part of them were burned in 1793 and the remainder is now in the Bibliothèque Nationale."?Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 237. Thus, this catalogue is the best record we have of these wonderful MSS. Montfaucon?s catalogue is considered to be an extraordinary piece of scholarship. The plates and text illustrations are facsimile reproductions of several of the manuscripts. Very nice copy. Stamp on free front endpaper of the "Kapuziner-Bibliothek Sarnen." ? Peignot, pp. 89-90?"Catalogue précieux; le nombre des manuscrits dont le rédacteur donne la description, est d?environ 400. This curiously enough was a private venture of one Jonathan Greenwood... No doubt this duodecimo sized book was much more convenient than the folio sized Instructions. Each signal is represented by a drawing of a ship flying the flag or flags of the signal at the proper place, the purport being added underneath, a method at use in the French navy at least twenty years earlier... Apparently, although the Instructions were regarded as confidential the signals were not, as the work is described as, ‘designed to supply the Inferior Officers who cannot have recourse to the Printed Instructions.’”- Perrin, British Flags, p. 163. The book consists of 72 leaves, all engraved, most containing two illustrations of ships or cannon, many with contemporary hand-coloring - 67 engraved illustrations in all. A&W 1890. It is a scarce book in the trade, particularly in good condition, as most copies were used hard. Worldcat shows only two libraries holding copies. The most recent copy in comparable condition to appear at auction sold for 3000 pounds in 2009. It is uncertain whether or not all copies have a frontispiece portrait. This one does not. It is in very good condition, bound in full period blind stamped calf. A wonderful survival.

Printed for A. Bettesworth, who is removed from London Bridge to the Red Lyon at Pater-Noster Row and sold by C. King Westminster Hall 1715. London 1715. Modern marble paper covered boards, blue cloth spine with paper title label. 8vo 7½'' x 5''. Containing 79 pages of text with embellished capital letter, header and tail-piece. Newspaper cuttings from The Times pasted to the rear paste downs, cracking between the title page and the first page of text, the paper is not foxed and has only marginal age toning to the edges. Charles II's father, King Charles I, was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War. Although the Parliament of Scotland proclaimed Charles II King of Great Britain and Ireland in Edinburgh on 6 February 1649, the English Parliament instead passed a statute that made any such proclamation unlawful. England entered the period known as the English Interregnum or the English Commonwealth, and the country was a de facto republic, led by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell defeated Charles II at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, and Charles fled to mainland Europe. Cromwell became virtual dictator of England, Scotland and Ireland, and Charles spent the next nine years in exile in France, the United Provinces and the Spanish Netherlands. A political crisis that followed the death of Cromwell in 1658 resulted in the restoration of the monarchy, and Charles was invited to return to Britain. On 29th May 1660, his 30th birthday, he was received in London to public acclaim. After 1660, all legal documents were dated as if he had succeeded his father as king in 1649. Charles II was popularly known as the Merry Monarch, in reference to both the liveliness and hedonism of his court and the general relief at the return to normality after over a decade of rule by Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans. Charles's wife, Catherine of Braganza, bore no live children, but Charles acknowledged at least twelve illegitimate children by various mistresses. As illegitimate children were excluded from the succession, he was succeeded by his brother James. Member of the P.B.F.A.

THE CASE OF CHARLES LORD BALTEMORE [sic], A MINOR, WITH RELATION TO HIS GOVERNMENT OF MARYLAND [caption title]

[London? 1715].. Small folio broadsheet. Printed docket title on verso. Antique-style three- quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Some very minor foxing, else near fine. In 1689, following the Glorious Revolution, the royal charter to Maryland was withdrawn from the Roman Catholic Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore, who had inherited the colony from his father, Cecil Calvert, Maryland's first proprietary governor, in 1675. While Maryland was in direct possession of the Crown, Charles' son, Benedict Leonard Calvert, renounced Catholicism and joined the Church of England in the hopes of having the family's title to Maryland restored. At the death of his father in February 1715, Benedict Leonard was named 4th Baron Baltimore and immediately petitioned George I for return of the colony. Before the King could rule on the matter, however, Baltimore suddenly died in April, and his title passed to his sixteen year-old son, Charles, to whom Maryland was restored that year. The present petition to Parliament states that Cecil Calvert had exhausted much of the family's estate in his cultivation and improvement of Maryland, and that the new Lord Baltimore has thus been left without funds to provide for his five siblings. His advocates request that Maryland may therefore be exempt from a new £3000 per year colonial tax. As the tax was intended in part to fund protection to the colonists from Indians, the petition further notes that few Indians remained in Maryland and could be easily overpowered by the white inhabitants. Rare, with ESTC recording only one copy, at Oxford. HANSON 2149.

THE CASE OF THE PEOPLE CALLED QUAKERS, WITH RESPECT TO MANY OF THEIR FRIENDS IN SOUTH- BRITAIN, AND THEIR FRIENDS IN GENERAL IN NORTH-BRITAIN, WHO CONSCIENTIOUSLY SCRUPLE THE TAKING OF THE PRESENT AFFIRMATION

[London? 1715].. Broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Moderate toning and foxing. Very good. In 1696, after experiencing decades of exclusion and imprisonment for conscientiously refusing to take loyalty and court oaths, Parliament granted Quakers the right to take a "solemn affirmation" in legal situations in place of an actual oath. Over the next two decades numerous Quakers objected to the invocation of God's name in the official affirmation and refused it as they had the oath. In 1715 a bill was under consideration in Parliament to renew indefinitely the Quakers' right to the affirmation. The Quaker authors of the present petition support the bill, but ask that it be amended with a revised affirmation that does not include the name of God. ESTC lists copies at four institutions: British Library, Library of the Religious Society of Friends, National Library of Scotland, and Oxford.       Thomas Ilive, London, England 1715 - Both the Hebrew and Spanish versions are bound here in one volume. They were printed in the same year. Hebrew section: [1], 38 leaves. Spanish section: title page with blank verso, iii xii, 169 pages. There is a blank leaf between the Hebrew and Spanish versions. Bound in modern full, brown, leather. All edges gilt. Pages are browned. This is a polemic against the Sabbateans: against Nechemya Hayon and his works and against the essentials of the Sabbatean faith by R. David Nieto, Rabbi of the Sephardic Congregation of London. Vinograd THESAURUS volume 2, page 364, London number 27. (Hayun controversy). 8vo. With Spanish. Steinschneider 4834,2 Column 882. Vinograd London number 28. Cecil Roth LONDON number 7, Steinschneider 4834,1 column 882. NIETO, DAVID (1654 1728), philosopher and haham of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in London (1701 1728). Having studied medicine at the University of Padua, Nieto functioned as dayyan, preacher and physician in Leghorn before going to London. He was proficient in languages and an astronomer of some repute. His calendar (1717) served the London community until the 19th century as a guide for the Sabbath and festivals. His works indicate that he was fully aware of the religious currents and crosscurrents of his time, including *Spinozism, Deism (see conceptions of *God), and Shabbateanism. MATTEH DAN (1714), his magnum opus, devoted to a defense of the Oral Law against the attacks of ex Marranos to whom the rabbinic tradition was both novel and unacceptable, has frequently been reprinted as a defense of rabbinic Judaism (last edition: Jerusalem, 1958). ESH DAT (1715) was directed against the Shabbatean heresiarch, Nehemiah Hiyya Hayon. Previously, Nieto had published PASCALOGIA (1702), dealing with the date of the Christian Easter in relation to that of the Jewish Passover, and DE LA DIVINA PROVIDENCIA (1704). The latter was an elaboration of a sermon Nieto had delivered to combat the deistic notion of a "Nature" apart from God Nieto identified Nature with God; and, although he made it clear that he had NATURA NATURANS, and not NATURA NATURATA (see *Spinoza) in mind, he was accused of Spinozistic leanings. Nevertheless, "Hakham Zevi" Ashkenazi (cf. his responsum number 18) ruled in his favor. Nieto's REPLY TO THE ARCHBISHOP OF CRANGANOR, published posthumously in 1729, controverts the christological interpretation of the Bible. In his writings, Nieto gives evidence of wide reading in science and the humanities. He argues for the compatibility of Judaism and scientific investigations. Nieto is also one of the very few Jewish theologians who used the argument de consensu gentium to establish the dogmas of God's existence and of retribution. BIBLIOGRAPHY: I.         Sefer Shaar Ora Sharey Orah

Zeligman Reis, Elizabeth, New Jersey 1715 - Sha¿arei Orah, a work roughly contemporaneous with the publication of the Zohar, was written by the Spanish kabbalist Joseph Gikatilla towards the end of the 13th century. It has served countless generations of aspiring students as a systematic primer guide of Kabbalah, to the systematic study of the Sefiroth (Divine emanations) and their code names, with Malchuth (Kingdom) as the primary, and Keter (Crown) as the final Sefirah. It is an exposition of Kabbalistic symbolism and the designations of the Sephorith. Joseph Gikatilla (Chiquatilla) (1248- c.1325) was a disciple of the founder of the school of ¿Prophetic kabbalah,¿ Abraham Abulafia, and a close colleague of Moses de Leon of Guadalajara (who publicized the Zohar). Gikatilla composed some of the most detailed, yet lucid, expositions of Kabblistic concepts. Indeed R. Chaim of Volozhin recommended it to his students as an important introduction to the arcane wisdom of Kabbalah. Gikatilla was the originator of the doctrine equating the infinite Ein Sof with the first of the Ten Sephiroth. Vinograd THESAURUS v. 2, page 10, Offenbach imprint number 13 (kabala) .
