        Carte particuliere de l'Amerique Septentrionale.

Artist: Mortier Peter ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1710 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 59,5 x 83; - description: chart of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean with Iceland, Greenland, and the Hudson Bay; - vita of the artist: Pieter Mortier (1661?1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. Mortier had a partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and founded the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). Mortier, being French himself, had easy access to French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. Consequently, much of Mortier's business was built upon leveraging the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue embellished high quality editions of previously contemporary French maps. In the greater context of global cartography, this was a significant advantage as most Dutch map publishes had, at this point, fallen into the miasma of reprinting their own outdated works. By contrast, the cartographers of France were producing the most accurate and up to date charts anywhere. Mortier's cartographic work culminated in the magnificent nautical atlas, Le Neptune Francois. Upon Pierre's death in 1711 this business was inherited by his widow. In 1721 his son Cornelius Mortier took over the day to day operation of the firm. Cornelius partnered with his brother-in-law Jean Covens to form one of history's great cartographic partnerships - Covens and Mortier - which continued to publish maps and atlases until about 1866.

These black borders are uncommon because of the amount of work needed to create black areas by engraving lines.         Pharmacopoeia collegii regalis medicorum Londinensis.London, for Joseph Johnson and [printed by] Charles Richard Hake, Rotterdam. 1788. 8vo. Slightly later half, tanned sheepskin,

      - ESTC T201275 (6 copies); this edition not in Blake; STCN; Wellcome. Rare sixth edition of the London pharmacopoeia, the first edition influenced by enlightenment science, printed in Rotterdam. The sixth edition was the first to use the system of binomial plant nomenclature devised by Linnaeus in his Systemae Naturae. More important was the omission of most of the animal materia medica (various parts of animals which included excrement), theriacs and mithridates. This reflected the critique of the English physician William Heberden (1710-1801), who in 1746 had successfully showed that that the belief in theriacs and mithridates, which were believed to be panaceas, was based upon a number of mistakes. Heberden's critique came too late for the pharmacopoeia of 1746, but the theriacs and mithridates were almost completely absent from the 1788-edition. Among the new medicines in 1788, was Robert James's patented fever powder, one of the most popular 18th-century patent medicines which was used up until the 20th-century.With owner's inscription on title-page and a partially trimmed-off marginal manuscript note on p. 127. Binding cracked at hinges, spine cracked, affecting title-label; front endpaper loose. Slight foxing throughout. Internally still a good copy.

Virgil's Aeneis, Translated into Scottish Verse,[...] A new Edition. Wherein the Many Errors of the Former are Corrected, and the Defects Supply'd, from an Excellent Manuscript. To Which is Added a Large Glossary, Explaining the Difficult Words: Which may Serve for a Dictionary to the Old Scottish Language. And to the Whole is Prefix'd an Exact Account of the Author's Life and Writings, from the Best Histories and Records.

Folio, pp. [viii], 19, [i], iv, [iv], 3-236, ff. 237-240, pp. 241-394, 397-486 [xcvi]. Complete despite pagination. With initial and final blank leaves. Two fairly long closed tears, affecting text but with no loss, to leaves 2D and 2U; pp. 189-92 misbound after p. 76, with a note to that effect (in an old hand) to p. 188; sporadic toning as usual with this rather poor-quality paper, some substantial ink smudges to pp. 381, 394, 395 affecting but not obscuring text; occasional light spotting. Contemporary brown calf, raised bands, reddish morocco gilt title label to spine, edges sprinkled red. Spine repaired at head and tail with conspicuous cloth tape, joints and edges rubbed, corners worn, a few marks and scrapes to boards, ffep slightly grubby and loosening, a very good copy that would benefit from more expert repair. The arrangement of the preliminaries varies from copy to copy. The preliminaries here are arranged thus: titlepage; titlepage to 1553 ed.; list of subscribers; 'The Life of Gawin Douglas'; 'The Judgment and Testimonies'; Preface. The main text begins on p. 3 ( A2); according to the ESTC, the title-page to the 1553 ed. (unsigned) may have been intended to be pp. 1-2. Second edition of the first translation of Virgil's 'Aeneid' into Scottish. This edition corrected the first printing (1553), and the Edinburgh philologist Thomas Ruddiman added an elaborate glossary. This glossary was the basis for the antiquary John Jamieson's 'Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language' (1808). The poet Gavin Douglas (?1475-1522), Bishop of Dunkeld and third son of the earl of Angus, "was one of the first to draw the distinction between Scots and 'Inglis'" (OCEL). He was unusual amongst his contemporaries in concentrating solely on studying the vernacular, rather than producing books in Latin. The 'Life' of Gavin Douglas by Bishop Sage, appended here, is one of the main sources for the author's biography.

Voyages et Avantures de Jaques Massé

Bordeaux: James l'Aveugle, 1710. First edition. An important imaginary voyage to Australia: a 'landmark' in the development of the French voyage novel (Atkinson), in its original full calf decorated binding. A Robinsonade account, which predates Defoe. It is complete with the ship wreck, exploration, conflict with local inhabitants, stand off and final rescue by a passing ship. It is a reasonable representation of the Australian continent and its challenges, along with a realistic estimation of the importance of mining and irrigation to Australia that "foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia." (Friederich) The title page is falsely dated 1710. In his deep analyses of Tyssot de Patot and his publications, Aubrey Rosenberg has concluded that this 1710 printing, with the armillary sphere device on the title page with the base pointing to the left, is indeed the first edition, and was published between 1714 and 1718. "Robinson Crusoe" first appeared in 1719. 12mo, (viii), 508pp. Bound in the original full brown calf binding, gilt spine in 6 compartments, raised bands, gilt device decoration on spine and outer dentelles. Bookplate of Sir John Dashwood King on the inside front pastedown. Rosenberg "A" Gove, 217-219; Cioranescu 62587; Barbier IV, 1103; Atkinson, 'The Extraordinary Voyage in French Literature', p. 70; Rosenberg, pp. 84-5. A handsome copy in its original binding.

Libri VI. Accessere Dissertationes Quaedam Prooemiales de Dignitate Sacerdotali, Item S. Chrysostomi Vita e Celebrr. Cavii Historia Literaria Desumpta.

Edm. Jeffery, 1710. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. Bound in full calf. clvii, (11), 301, (3)p. Publisher's catalogue to the rear. ESTC: T172307. The Greek text with Latin translation of St John Chrysostom's 'De Sacerdotio'. Also known as 'On the Priesthood'. Early Christian church text. Cappadocian Fathers. First thus. Includes a life of Chrysostom and dissertations on the Christian priesthood. Contains all six books. "Book I describes the events...which preceded Basil's consecration: also his visit to Crysostom, and Chrysistom's defence against his friend's reproaches. Book II descibes the heavy responsibilities of the priestly office: and shews that while Basil is fitted for that office, Chrysostom is unworthy of holding it. Those who nominated him, instead of resenting his refusal of the honour, may congratulate themselves that he did not bring discredit upon them by accepting it and then proving his unfitness. Book III sets forth the dignity of the priestly office, and the faults of Chrysostom's character, which would have entailed disaster to him and others. The qualities for which we ought to look in a Bishop, and his various duties also described. Book IV shews that the priest, or bishop, must be a stalwart defender of the faith against heretics: and contains an eloquent eulogy of St Paul in regard to his skill in expounding Christian doctrine. Book V emphasizes the need of careful preparation before preaching. Book VI describes the duties of the priest as contrasted with those of a monk. The responsibilities of the priest are shewn to be greater, for the souls of others are in his keeping. The fierce character of the warfare carried on by Satan against mankind is also delineated. The book ends with a promise given by Chrysostom that he will assist Basil by his counsel in fulfilling the duties of his office." - Introduction of 'De Sacerdotio of St. John Chrysostom' edited by John Arthbuthnot Nairn, 1906. Previously owned by Rev. Hugh Scott Charles, with his ink inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1901. Condition: Good due to joints. Joints starting. Some bumping.
