London: R. Brugis, 1709. London:: R. Brugis, 1709., 1709. Small 4to. (201 x 160 mm) [14], 194 pp. 8 plates (7 folding); foxing to some sections, plates 3 and 4 bound in reverse order, 1 plate facing p. 160, margins of two plates reinforced. Full modern speckled olive calf, raised bands, gilt-stamped spine title, by Johanna Rojgard [Sweden]. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon, ink ownership marks of James William Heath (1869) on front endleaf. Very good. FIRST EDITION. THE DISCOVERY OF NEON LIGHTING. By 1705, Hauksbee had discovered that if he placed a small amount of mercury in the glass of his modified version of Otto von Guericke's generator and evacuated the air from it, and then he caused a charge to be built up on the ball, a glow was visible if he placed his hand on the outside of the ball. This glow was bright enough to read by. This effect later became the basis of Neon lighting and mercury vapor lights. "Hauksbee's important experiments on electroluminescence, static electricity, and capillarity, described in the present work, mark the beginning of sustained experimentation in the field of electricity. He was the first to demonstrate the optical effects produced by the passage of electricity through rarified air. His demonstration of the efficacy of glass in producing frictional electricity opened the way from the work of Gray, Dufay and Franklin, and his discoveries in capillarity (he was the first adequately to explore the subject) influenced Laplace nearly one hundred years later. Hauksbee performed many of his experiments at the suggestion of Isaac Newton, from whom … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zurner, Adam Friedrich
1709. This map was drawn by Zurner and published by Pieter Schenk. Cartographically, it is an updated version of Schenk's earlier map, which in turn was based on Visscher. The map contains the customary 17th century interior cartography with an exaggerated outline with deeply scalloped bays. The Nile arises from Lakes Zaire and Zaflan in the Ptolemaic manner and the Congo also originates in Lake Zaire. The impressive cartouche is entirely original and features an African queen riding a massive elephant, a fat-tailed sheep, a snarling lion, a snake, and a huge crocodile. In the background are two pyramids and in the middle distance a group of natives, one milking a cow. Dimensions: 51 x 59cm

Swedenborg, Emanuel
Ex Officina Werneriana, Upsaliae [Uppsala], 1709. First edition. Text in Latin and Greek. In later half leather by Gustav Hedberg (1859-1920), with his vignette on flyleaf. Spine with gilt floral patterns, and red title vignette, panels covered with marbled paper. [8] 62 p. Emanuel Swedenborg's doctoral dissertation, his first publication. Emanuel Swedenborg's (1688-1772) the Swedish scientist, Christian mystic, philosopher, and theologian, graduated at the University of Uppsala where he studied mathematics, mineralogy, and natural philosophy. He took his degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1709 with the present thesis "Selected Sentences", an annotated edition of maxims from Seneca, Publius Syrus, and others. "Selected Sentences" is the first published work bear Swedenborg's name (then Swedberg). The book is dedicated to Emanuel's father, Jesper Swedberg a prominent member of the Swedish clergy. The dissertation quotes sentences from classic writers on friendship, filial love, and the like, and these maxims are commented by Swedenborg, showing his early interest in human sentiments and reactions. The sentences are in alphabetical order from A to D, ending with the catchword "Effugere", however, the publication never continued. London: John Morphew, J Woodward, 1709. Secret Memoirs and Manners of Several Persons of Quality, of Both Sexes. From the New Atlantis an Island in the Mediterranean. Manley, Mary de la Riviere. London: Printed for John Morphew...J Woodward, 1709. 2 Vols, Complete. Mary De La Rivere Manley (1670-1724) is perhaps best-known for this controversial work, Secret Memoirs and Manners of Several Persons of Quality of both Sexes, from the New Atalantis, an Island in the Mediterranean in 1709. In her time, Manley was a notorious character known for her scandalous past (a cousin seduced her into a bigamous marriage), her sensational writing (ranging from the aggressively political to the erotic), and her appearance (she was badly scarred from a bout of smallpox in her youth and known for being overweight). Manley should be included when discussing the central political and literary circles of the time: friends with Jonathan Swift as well as his successor as editor of The Examiner, satirised by Alexander Pope in The Rape of the Lock, and now usually mentioned alongside Aphra Behn and Eliza Haywood as "the fair triumvirate of wit." New Atlantis, the title she is best known for, was published anonymously and claims on its title to have been originally written in Italian. "Later critics read it as pornographic; still later critics co-opted it into the development of the novel; but that is not how its author or its original readers understood it. It is political scandal fiction (what was developed first in France as 'chronique scandaleuse'), with elements both of allegory and of propagand … [Click Below for Full Description]
