GUEROULT DU PAS, Pierre Jacques.
30; 30; 16 engr. ll.Rare first edition of three charming series of prints depicting boats and ships sailing on the Mediterranean, oceans around the world and canals in Venice for purposes of trade, fishing, transport, war, etc., engraved by Gueroult du Pas, who was active at Toulon at the beginning of the 18th century. The captions are unusually precise and informative, making the book a valuable reference work on the names of the various kinds of ships, their uses and the regions where they sailed. It includes ships sailing in European, American (including West Indies) and Levant waters. The last plate shows a ship under construction with cranes and other equipment. The engraved title-page to part 2 has the date 1709 in the cartouche and the first plate of part 3 has the same date below the title on the sail, so the three series were probably published in their present form, with each plate on a separate leaf, in that year.In good condition, with only some minor foxing or faint browned patches, and only slightly trimmed, giving generous margins. The binding has been expertly and unobtrusively rebacked and the surface of the leather shows some minor cracks and an occasional small flake, but the binding is still in good condition. First edition of three charming and informative series of boat and ship prints, in a charming contemporary French binding.l WorldCat (1 copy); cf. Cat. NHSM II, p. 745; Polak, supp. 10244 (cf. 4163); Thieme-Becker XV, p. 236 (all 1710 ed.); not in Chadenat.

BOERHAAVE, Herman.
[4], 408, [2], 409-696, [30] pp.Third edition, with corrections and an expanded index, of Boerhaave's description of the plants in Leiden University's botanical garden. It gives an account of the various species, including the origins of the plants, their names, characteristics and possible medicinal properties. It includes trees, herbs, flowers, mushrooms and marine plants, including cannabis and various American, East Indian and other exotic species. Upon his appointment as professor of medicine and botany at Leiden University in 1709, Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) automatically became head of the botanical garden. He published his first catalogue of plants, Index plantarum, in 1710, and added more than two thousand species by the second edition in 1720, reflecting Boerhaave's extensive additions to the garden. Although the present work bears Boerhaave's name, it is believed to have been prepared by one of his students with the aid of lecture notes. With a manuscript note in the fore-edge margin of the title-page, referring to the part-two title-page. Lacking the final blank leaf. With very slight browning, but otherwise in very good condition. The hinges are cracked and the spine label and extremities slightly damaged, but the binding is otherwise good. Revised edition of an important botanical catalogue, especially valuable for its insights into Boerhaave's teaching methods.l Arnold Arboretum I, p. 91; ESTC T130372; Henrey 463; Kuijlen & Wijnands 91.

Reinzer, Franz.
Emblemata -, Jeremias Wolf, 1709. 4. Mit gestochenem Frontispiz und 83 Textkupfern. 2 Bl., 297, (1) S., 1 Bl. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Honley, England? ; Corning, New York], 1709. Octavo. 284pp. (142 unnumbered leaves [pp. 1-284]). Professionally bound in late 19th century quarter vellum and grey cloth over boards with wove paper endleaves, spine lettered direct in gold: "M.S. Sermons, 1709-11", edges stained light black. Early ownership signature in ink on the final leaf recto: "Will: Crofts, His Book, 1758". Gift presentation in ink on the front free endpaper (dated 1944): "To my friend Roger Alling, Christ Church, Corning, N.Y." It is signed by a U.S. Army Major (Air Corps), whose name is illegible. Light soiling to the vellum and first leaf, small tear to the bottom margin of the first two leaves, near fine. An early manuscript collection of expository sermons, densely written in a small but very legible hand. The first leaf, the only leaf written on the recto only, lists 33 sermons identified by biblical citations and a short verse excerpt. Thereafter the manuscript is written continuously on the rectos and versos of every leaf, with catchwords at the foot of most pages. Though when carefully rebound in vellum the binder titled the volume on the spine "M.S. Sermons" it appears more likely that this collection of "sermons" was intended to serve both as a commentary on the scripture, and a manual for those answering the call to serve the cause of Christ as minister of the gospel. Most are dated throughout the body of the text according to the Lady Day calendar, from March, 1709 through April, 1711. Additional biblical verses are quoted throughout the text, all of which appear to follow the King James V … [Click Below for Full Description]

COEHOORN, Menno van.
Neuer Vestungs-Bau.Düsseldorff, Jacobus von Wesel (colophon: printed by the heirs of Johann Kattepoel), 1709. 4to. With 14 (of 15) folding engraved plates. Contemporary tanned sheepskin. [38], 203, [1] pp. plus plates. First German edition (second issue) of one of the greatest classics of the art of fortification, by the Inspector General of Dutch fortifications and Master General of the artillery, Menno van Coehoorn. While the Dutch had established themselves as the greatest masters of fortification during the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence from Spain, the art did not stand still after peace came temporarily in 1648. Although a few Dutch engineers spoke out for reform, the Frenchman Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) was to dominate the field with his fortifications, defensive and especially offensive strategies, and publications on the subjects from the 1670s. Van Coehoorn (1641-1704), Vauban's only major rival, took a very different approach, more practical than theoretical, with his great fortification manual in 1685. He deployed troops more actively in the defence of fortifications and tailored his designs and strategies to the particular features of the site. This made them especially important for fortifications and siege warfare in the marshy flat lands of the Low Countries, circumstances less familiar to Vauban. With library stamp. With a blank leaf pasted over the instructions to the bookbinder on )(4v. The plates are quite lightly inked, so that they show a great deal of detail. Lacking 1 folding plate, with a small tear and some wrinkles in 1 fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

The report is signed by [Maj.] Wm. Vaughan, John Pirkdom (sp?), Wm. Cotton, and Tobias Langdon. The response of the town selectman follows, allowing for "Maj. Wm.
With other important texts in Karir’ (see below). The book is a valuable witness to this now-extinct language. Today, the roughly 4,000 ethnic Karir’s are largely monolingual Portuguese speakers. The translation is the work of Bernardo de Nantes, Superior of the Capuchins of Pernambuco. In his preface to King Jo‹o V, he writes that he has been teaching among the Indians for 23 years and explains that this language is considerably different from the language of the Karir’-Kipe‡ Indians, for whom a Catechism (by Mamiani) had appeared in 1698.(See Kappel, Bosch 162). ÒThe terms Karir’ and Kiriri are not mere mis-spellings. In the prologue to GarciaÕs edition of MamianiÕs ÔArteÕ, he writes that ÔQuiririÕ is applied to the tribes of Bahia, and ÔCaririÕ for those of the North. According to Garcia, the Karir’s lived near the river of S‹o Francisco and spoke Dubucu‡ (or Dzubucu‡ … [Click Below for Full Description]
