Voyages et Avantures de Jaques Massé

Bordeaux: James l'Aveugle, 1710. First edition. An important imaginary voyage to Australia: a 'landmark' in the development of the French voyage novel (Atkinson), in its original full calf decorated binding. A Robinsonade account, which predates Defoe. It is complete with the ship wreck, exploration, conflict with local inhabitants, stand off and final rescue by a passing ship. It is a reasonable representation of the Australian continent and its challenges, along with a realistic estimation of the importance of mining and irrigation to Australia that "foreshadow what has actually come to pass in modern Australia." (Friederich) The title page is falsely dated 1710. In his deep analyses of Tyssot de Patot and his publications, Aubrey Rosenberg has concluded that this 1710 printing, with the armillary sphere device on the title page with the base pointing to the left, is indeed the first edition, and was published between 1714 and 1718. "Robinson Crusoe" first appeared in 1719. 12mo, (viii), 508pp. Bound in the original full brown calf binding, gilt spine in 6 compartments, raised bands, gilt device decoration on spine and outer dentelles. Bookplate of Sir John Dashwood King on the inside front pastedown. Rosenberg "A" Gove, 217-219; Cioranescu 62587; Barbier IV, 1103; Atkinson, 'The Extraordinary Voyage in French Literature', p. 70; Rosenberg, pp. 84-5. A handsome copy in its original binding.

Joannes Wolters 1710 - First edition. Octavo (overall 210 mm x 130 mm, the pages 197 x 118 mm). Contemporary full vellum over boards, tan calf title-piece on spine gilt-lettered within gilt rule and palmette roll, all edges cut and sprinkled red, green and gold silk headbands and marker ribbon. Engraved frontispiece of “Ioannis Conradi Barscusen Symposiaca” by D. Coster after Van Wyck, title in red and black with woodcut vignette, woodcut headpieces to dedication and first dialogue, a few decorated opening initials. Collates [18], 632, [36] pp., complete: frontispiece, *7, **2, A8 - Ss8, Tt6; [1 l. (binder’s blank)], 1 l. (frontispiece verso), 1 l. (title), 3 ll. (dedication), 3 ll. (preface), 1 l. (expostulatory poem), 2 ll. (contents and quotation from Augustine, de Civitate Dei), pp. [1] – 610 (XIX Dialogi), 610 – 632 (Oratio de Nepenthe), 18 ll. (index, with “addenda & menda” on last 2 pp.), [1 l. (binder’s blank)]. Front cover tips slightly bumped, spine ends slightly compressed, minor spotting on covers, separation of pastedowns from board at lower 25 mm of front gutter and upper 25 mm of rear gutter, repaired loss on fore-edge of front blank, small brown spot on frontispiece offsetting onto upper framing line of title vignette, an unusually fine copy notwithstanding these overall negligible faults, bright, tight and remarkably unblemished considering its age. The frontispiece of this volume, inscribed “D.Coster f. t Van Wyck Deli.” for the engraver and illustrator David Coster (1686-1752) after the Haarlem painter Thomas [Van] Wyck (1616-1677), depicts a wreathed Hippocrates with the Staff of Asclepius leading a symposium of five apparently cloned savants seated around a table. These figures handle, respectively, a scalpel and skeleton, an armillary sphere, a retort and long-necked flask (erupting fire?) and geometrical tools; the center foreground figure sits on a stool carved with hexagrams, astride astrological charts on the ground. The figures in this “Ioannis Conradi Barscusen Symposiaca” may be the manifestations of Barchusen’s philosophy cloned into one person, embodying Barchusen’s own evolution as a seminal figure in the study of chemistry as a branch of natural philosophy. For Barchusen iatrochemistry as curative medicine was a part of an experimental natural philosophy which predated that of Boerhaave at Leyden by several years. The thrust of Dialogi XVI through XIX, the last quarter of the book, is on the seventeenth century, mostly iatrochemical progression, with, nevertheless, recognition of the impact of the anatomists, Cartesians and mechanical physicists. At the outset of his Praefatio Barchusen extols among his predecessors Daniel Le Clerc (“unicum Dan. Clericum, Virum consummatae eruditionis”), the doctor of Geneva often deemed the father of modern medical history. In fact, Le Clerc’s first edition in 1696 of his Histoire de la Médecine extends only to Galen, and the contemporary anatomical and physiological writings surveyed in his Bibliotheca anatomica (1685 and 1699, with Jean-Jacques Manget) became part of Le Clerc’s revised and expanded Histoire only in 1723. Of the histories preceding John Freind’s History of Physick (London, 1725-6), Philip Storr could count only Barchusen’s Historia of 1710 as a contemporary historical narrative, not merely a catalogue of biography or bibliography, having the substance of the ensuing accounts of Le Clerc and Freind (“Sir John Freind (1675-1728) M.D. Pioneer Historian of Medicine,” Isis, vol. 27, no. 3 (Nov. 1937), pp. 453-474, at 453-4). This edition, now notably rare both at public sale and in trade, was also issued by Jansonnius van Waesberge and R. et G. Wetstenius of Amsterdam, with variant titles but otherwise apparently identical. No priority of issue has been noted. The present outstanding copy was acquired from Jeremy Norman & Co.         Sancti Patris Nostri Joannis Chrysostomi Archi-Episcopi Constantinopolitani de Sacerdotio. Libri VI. Accessere Dissertationes Quaedam Prooemiales de Dignitate Sacerdotali, Item S. Chrysostomi Vita e Celebrr. Cavii Historia Literaria Desumpta.

Edm. Jeffery, 1710. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. Bound in full calf. clvii, (11), 301, (3)p. Publisher's catalogue to the rear. ESTC: T172307. The Greek text with Latin translation of St John Chrysostom's 'De Sacerdotio'. Also known as 'On the Priesthood'. Early Christian church text. Cappadocian Fathers. First thus. Includes a life of Chrysostom and dissertations on the Christian priesthood. Contains all six books. "Book I describes the events...which preceded Basil's consecration: also his visit to Crysostom, and Chrysistom's defence against his friend's reproaches. Book II descibes the heavy responsibilities of the priestly office: and shews that while Basil is fitted for that office, Chrysostom is unworthy of holding it. Those who nominated him, instead of resenting his refusal of the honour, may congratulate themselves that he did not bring discredit upon them by accepting it and then proving his unfitness. Book III sets forth the dignity of the priestly office, and the faults of Chrysostom's character, which would have entailed disaster to him and others. The qualities for which we ought to look in a Bishop, and his various duties also described. Book IV shews that the priest, or bishop, must be a stalwart defender of the faith against heretics: and contains an eloquent eulogy of St Paul in regard to his skill in expounding Christian doctrine. Book V emphasizes the need of careful preparation before preaching. Book VI describes the duties of the priest as contrasted with those of a monk. The responsibilities of the priest are shewn to be greater, for the souls of others are in his keeping. The fierce character of the warfare carried on by Satan against mankind is also delineated. The book ends with a promise given by Chrysostom that he will assist Basil by his counsel in fulfilling the duties of his office." - Introduction of 'De Sacerdotio of St. John Chrysostom' edited by John Arthbuthnot Nairn, 1906. Previously owned by Rev. Hugh Scott Charles, with his ink inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1901. Condition: Good due to joints. Joints starting. Some bumping.         Historiae Societatis Jesu.

Romae: Typographia Georgii Plachi, 1710. [8], 974 pagine. Lievi bruniture e alcune fioriture all'interno.

- 4°, disbound, with first leaf detached. Small woodcut arms of Portugal on title page, woodcut headpiece, five-line woodcut initial, large woodcut tailpiece (vase with flowers). Good to very good condition. 38 pp., (1 blank l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Letters full of insults and complaints from the French plenipotentiary, Melchior de Polignac, and the States General of the Dutch Republic, all dated late July 1710. These were part of the rancorous negotiations to end the War of the Spanish Succession. Polignac famously twitted the Dutch that French and Spanish treaty negotiations with the Allies (Great Britain, Savoy, Austria, Habsburg Empire, Dutch Republic) were de vous, chez vous, sans vous: about you, in your country, but without you. The Dutch were particularly concerned about the fate of the Spanish Netherlands, which ended up in control of the Austrians. The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) was ended by a series of treaties: Utrecht in 1713, Rastatt in 1714, Baden in 1714. Many overseas possessions of the nations concerned were involved, including the Amazon River basin, Colonia do Sacramento in Uruguay, and Canada. As a result of these treaties, the idea of a ?balance of power? (a very new concept) became a significant factor in European politics.*** Not in Innocêncio or Fonseca.       - Kol.

NANSEN BUSHU BANKOKU SHOKA NO ZU: BUDDHIST MAP OF THE UNIVERSE According to Zuda

      - [Kyoto 1710, Nagata Chohbei]. Blue original paper covers, title slip, covers rubbed: some blue loss, woodblock printed 1 m. 44.5 x 1 m. 20 cm. accordion folded, very good impres- sion, excellent registry, white hand-made paper, clean solid. *** *** *** . . . AN EARLY BUDDHIST MAP OF THE WORLD . . . ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS EARLY MAPS . . . A GRAND & DELUXE WALL MAP . *** An excellent fine early example of a woodblock printed map, with Chinese text. This is the first Japanese world map drawn according to Buddhist cosmology & the prototype for all other later Buddhist world maps done in Japan until the end of the 19th century. . *** THE ARTIST AND AUTHOR: Hotan [aka Zuda Rokashi 1654-1728], was the author, artist, editor, scholar and Buddhist priest, he was also the famous founder of Kegonji Buddhist Temple in Kyoto. He was an eminent Buddhist priest and scholar who reconciled new information from the West with Chinese sources. The work is signed "Rokashi," which means "mapmaker and editor." . *** This map gave the hitherto isolated Japanese "a way to see a wider view of the world, but one that they could easily understand.his map was widely acclaimed for the numerous place names he furnished for Indian & Asian areas. very rare in Western maps." Quoted from Namba, see below. . *** The map is centered on Jambudvipa the mythological heart of Buddhist cosmography in India. This very vital spot is noted by a horned animal who's breath is a long spiral of flame emanating from the most sacred & holy Buddhist place on the earth. Europe appears as a string of islands. A land bridge connects China with an unnamed continent to its East, which "must undoubtedly be a reflection of America" in the opinion of the celebrated Japanese scholars. . *** Per Rudolph [see below], on p.92, she states: "This map is descended from a line of Japanese manuscript maps based on the journey of the Chinese priest Xuangzang's pilgrimage to India in search of scriptures. Scholars believe that the maps were originally copied out as a from of devotion--a pilgrimage of the spirit if not the body--and that later versions like this, which includes South America, demonstrate an attempt to reconcile sacred geography with the examples of European cartography that were reaching Japan through Dutch traders and, via China, Jesuit missionaries." . *** WHAT ONE MODERN CARTOGRAPHIC SCHOLAR SAYS: Cartographic scholars Prof. Oda discuss the Northern most Japanese island of Ezo where the Ainu lived is located on this map just slightly South of the mystery continent which is actually American. Africa is a diminutive land mass. To the far West is a small island empire identified as "Country of Western Women" along with other mountainous island kingdoms, likely England, Scotland and Ireland. The map text includes a list of Buddhist Sutras, Chinese histories, literary classics &c. All drawn by Hotan, which "Illustrates the fusion of Buddhist dogma and Western geographical knowledge." See Oda below. . *** PROTYPE MAP: The basic outlines of the map are copied from a Buddhist prototype, the Gotenjiku Zu [MAP OF THE FIVE INDIES], whose characteristic features was the shield-shaped continent of Jambu-dvipa. Jambu-dvipa was the habitable world according to the Buddhist cosmographical view. In this example the sacred lake of Anavatapta can be seen in the centre, from which flow four rivers in a whirlpool pattern. Jambu-dvipa can be equated topographically with the Indian peninsula, Lake Anavatapta symbolizes Lake Manasarovar in the Himalayas and the four rivers represent the Ganges, Oxus, Indus and Tarim. In order to preserve the traditional Buddhist outlines and at the same time incorporate the new knowledge of Western geography, the European and American countries are shown as small islands on the periphery of Jambu-dvipa. Although an amalgam of discordant ideas, the map became one of the most popular and widely circulated works of the day and served as a model for all later Buddhist maps

De Antiquissima Italorum Sapientia Ex Linguae Latinae Originibus Eruenda Libri Tres.

Naples: Felicis Mosca,, 1710. Liber Primus Metaphysicus. Duodecimo (163 x 90 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in manuscript, edges uncut. Contemporary or near-contemporary ownership inscription to title page. Tanning and a little spotting to spine and extremities, slight wear to lower edge of front board, some very minor dampstain to front free endpapers, foxing and a few chips to contents, an excellent copy of this scarce edition. First edition of the Italian philosopher, historian, and jurist's fullest statement of the verum factum principle, the first book in the unrealised series of three outlining his anti-Cartesian philosophical system. The second and third books, Liber Secundus Physicus and Liber Tertius Moralis, were never completed for unknown reasons. Liber Primus Metaphysicus "remained virtually unknown for over a hundred years, although during Vico's lifetime it was widely read in Neapolitan academic circles" (Palmer, p. x). It was not translated from the Latin into Italian until 1816, and it was only reprinted in 1828. Vico's writings gained popularity during the nineteenth century, and his impact on the modern philosophy of history, culture, and mythology cannot be understated. Marx cites Vico in Das Kapital and Trotsky quotes him on the first page of his History of the Russian Revolution; Coleridge and Yeats were enthusiastic disseminators of Vichian ideas; and Joyce composed Finnegans Wake using Vico's four-part cyclical theory of civilisation. Liber Primus Metaphysicus contains the first printing of Vico's Latin aphorism "verum esse ipsum factum" ("the true is the made") for which he would become famous. The 1710 edition is extremely rare, and there is only one previous auction record from 2008 in which it was sold bound with two other works.

Lipsiae, J.F. Max Salomon, Hirsch I, p.512f. Sein Hauptwerk "ist überhaupt sehr geeignet, den Zustand der Physiologie seiner Zeit kennenzulernen" Haeser II, p.304 Johann Bohn "experimented on the decapitated frog, declaring the reflex phenomena to be entirely material and mechanical, the general view of the time being that "vital spirits" were present in the nerve -fluid. Bohn showed that the nerves do not contain a "nerve juice"." Garrison & Morton "The strongly speculative ideas of the iatrochemists came under attack early, especially by the German physician and chemist Johannes Bohn (1640-1718), the anatomical prosector at Leipzig, he accepted the need for chemical explanations, especially concerning the digestive processes. He postulated, for example, that the saliva prepared the foodstuffs for their gastric digestion. For Bohn, the saliva's watery portion extracted salty particles from the food, while the oily and spiritual salivary components combined with the sulphurous parts of the nutriment. The entire digestive process consisted of the disintegration of the ingested material into fine atoms. For Bohn the pancreatic juice did not appear to boil when combined with alkali and was thus not acid. Moreover, he denied that the bile was of alkaline nature and secreted from the walls of the gallbladder. He correctly deduced that the liver was the real source of bile and also refuted the existence of a nervous fluid circulating in the nerves. Bohn's ideas reflected the influence of both the English physician Thomas Willis (1621-1675) and the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694). He was one of the most important experimental physiologists before Haller, expressing more sympathy for iatrophysics and atomism than iatrochemistry. Bohn's critique, however, was still only tentative because of a lack of proper methods of investigation." Karl E.Rothschuh, Hist. of Physiology, p.62 Blake 56 Garrison & Morton No.1355 (1st.Ed.1686).

Institutiones medicae. Burggravii.

Francoforti ad. Moenum, Georgii Heinrici Oerhlingii, 1710, 12, (24), 257, (3), pp., Pappband d.Zt.: minimal fleckig. Rare first edition published in Germany, first unauthorized edition, second published in general!"The lectures which Boerhaave gave the first on June 23, 1701, were called : Institutiones Medicae. The book bearing this title is based on these lectures. From the prolegomena of the second edition of this book we see that Boerhaave understood by Institutiones Medicae the medical doctrine, consisting of 5 parts : a. physiologyb. pathologyc. semeioticad. hygienee. therapeutics. Physiology, pathology and therapeutics make up a whole. Perhaps it would be better to say they were not yet separated. This was no longer the case a century later. Fulton wrote a study on the influence of this work on modern physiology 2). This is important to a bibliography of Boerhaave for sometimes parts of the book were edited separately or remodelled. As in his funeral oration, the reliable Schultens gives 1707 as the of appearance, probably the book came from press towards the end of that year, but was dated 1708. This corresponds with the date of the preface September 20, 1707." G.A. Lindeboom, Bibliographia Boerhaaviana (1959), pp.27-281) Arch. path. Anat. (1858), XIII, 1. (vgl. M. O. Processus anatomicus (1710), p.10)."         Sancti Patris Nostri Joannis Chrysostomi Archi-Episcopi Constantinopolitani de Sacerdotio. Libri VI. Accessere Dissertationes Quaedam Prooemiales de Dignitate Sacerdotali, Item S. Chrysostomi Vita e Celebrr. Cavii Historia Literaria Desumpta.

Edm. Jeffery 1710 - Bound in full calf. clvii, (11), 301, (3)p. "Book I describes the events.which preceded Basil's consecration: also his visit to Crysostom, and Chrysistom's defence against his friend's reproaches. Versand D: 6,00 EUR BAYERN, Franken
