CELLARIUS, Andreas
VALK, Gerard and SCHENK, Petrus, 1708. Map. Hand colored engraving. 17" x 20". This beautiful celestial chart shows various astrological aspects, such as planetary opposition. The outer ring is labeled with the twelve Zodiac signs and it centers on a small world map in a North Polar projection. The chart is floating above clouds and cherubs. Beautifully colored. Andreas Cellarius (1595-1665) is the author of the Harmonia Macrocosmica (first published in 1660), a folio-sized work that is one of the most spectacular cosmographical atlases that was published. Gerard Valk (1652-1726) was a based publisher, engraver and globe maker from Amsterdam. He moved to London and 1672 where he worked with other map and print sellers. He later began working closely with Petrus Schenk. Although they never shared the same premises, the two worked closely together, taking advantage of the bustling cartographic trade in the city and quickly expanded their business from portraits and prints into maps and globes. Valk established his own globe making workshop in the same premises once occupied by Jodocus Hondius. Working with his son, they published various works based on the latest geographical and agronomical information. This is a beautiful example of his work.

[MONTMORT, Pierre Rémond de].
Paris: Jacque Quillau, 1708. First edition. First edition, first issue, very rare, of the first separately published textbook of probability. This issue has significant textual differences from what is usually referred to as the first edition. "In 1708 [Montmort] published his work on Chances, where with the courage of Columbus he revealed a new world to mathematicians" (Todhunter, p. 78). "The Essay (1708) is the first published comprehensive text on probability theory, and it represents a considerable advance compared with the treatises of Huygens (1657) and Pascal (1665). Montmort continues in a masterly way the work of Pascal on combinatorics and its application to the solution of problems on games of chance. He also makes effective use of the methods of recursion and analysis to solve much more difficult problems than those discussed by Huygens. Finally, he uses the method of infinite series, as indicated by Bernoulli (1690)" (Hald, p. 290). "Montmort's book on probability, Essay d'analyse sur les jeux de hazard, which came out in 1708, made his reputation among scientists" (DSB). Based on the problems set forth by Huygens in his De Ratiociniis in Ludo Aleae (1657) (published as an appendix to Frans van Schooten's Exercitationum mathematicarum), the Essay spawned Abraham de Moivre's two important works De Mensura Sortis (1711) and Doctrine of Chances (1718). ABPC/RBH record the sale of just three other copies of the first edition (Christie's 1981, Hartung 1987 and the Tomash copy). As Sotheby's correctly noted in the Tomash library sale catalogue (18 September 2018, lo … [Click Below for Full Description]

A mint copy of the most beautiful baroque book on citrus fruit ever published. The large and impressive portrayals of citrus fruit covers about half the upper part of most of the plates, seemingly floating over the large gardens, country estates of the nobility and wealthy patricians of southern Germany (some of northern Italy are included as well).Johann Christoph Volckamer (1644-1720) was a wealthy Nuremberg merchant, son of Johann Georg Volckamer I (1616-1693) a keen botanist who established a large greenhouse in his garden at Gostenhof. Johann Christoph Volckamer inherited the garden and started to cultivate citrus fruit, a hobby amongst the wealthy classes, in which he had become interested during a visit in Italy. "He visited many gardens in the neighbourhood and further afield as far as Venice and Bologna, beginning to study the endless varieties of citrus fruit he saw. Even after his return to Germany his friends among Italian gardeners and nurserymen supplied him with citrus trees and kept him informed of new developments" (S.Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona, p. 192).According to the preface most of the excellent plates are after drawings by the author and his brother Johann Christoph Volckamer II, s … [Click Below for Full Description]

A double hemisphere world map, surrounded by a florid vine pattern with depictions of "Le Soleil Salon le Pere Kircher" and "La Lune Selon Monsieur Cassini" and a compass rose. Richard Newcourt (died 1716) was an English notary and historian, author of the Repertorium Ecclesiasticum Parochiale Londinense, a history of the diocese of London.Newcourt was the son of a topographical draughtsman,[1] also called Richard Newcourt, who owned an estate at Somerton, Somerset. Using the records in his custody and other documents, Newcourt compiled a history of the diocese of London, which was published in two volumes in 1708 and 1710, under the title Repertorium Ecclesiasticum Parochiale Londinense: An Ecclesiastical Parochial History of the Diocese of London. The work recounts the history of St Paul's Cathedral, of the bishops and deans of London, and of the parishes in the diocese.[1] His sources of information included the London Registers, which were begun in 1306, and registers kept by individual bishops. The incomes of the parishes were taken from a return made in 1636, the manuscript of which was then at Sion College.[6] He also wrote a history of the bishops of England, which was not published. He spent the last years of his life at Greenwich,[3] and was buried at the parish church in February 1716. His wife had been interred there the previous month.[7] He left his property to his sister, Mary Spicer. v. 1 Comprising all London and Middlesex, with parts of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire to the said diocese belonging --v. 2 Comprising all the county of Essex, published 1710. LOCKE, John.
London: printed for A. and J. Churchill, 1708. Octavo (189 x 112 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, red morocco label, edges sprinkled red. Expertly refurbished, with joints repaired and new sympathetic label. Small chip at head of final few leaves, final page lightly soiled. A very good copy. First edition, the first authorized collection of any letters by Locke. Published four years after Locke's death, the volume is presumed to have been compiled and edited by Locke's cousin and principal heir Peter King. The collection comprises three sets of correspondence. The first are the letters between Locke and the Irish experimental philosopher William Molyneux (1656–1698), a correspondence which lasted from 1692 until Molyneux's death. The volume contains the first printed form of the letter sent by Molyneux on 2 March 1693, where he proposed what has since become known as "Molyneux's Problem", which enquires whether a blind man able to distinguish between a sphere and cube by touch would be able to do so if he gained his sight. Both Locke and Molyneux agreed that he could not, and "the problem had profound philosophical implications and became a key topic in British philosophy" (ODNB). Locke referenced the problem in his Essay Concerning Human Understanding in 1689. The second collection of letters consists of those between Locke and Willliam Molyneux's son Thomas (1661–1733), and the third collection consists of letters in Latin between Locke and his friend Philippus van Limborch (1633–1712), the Dutch theologian. The book is unusual in including letters both to and from the re … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAJERI, Joh. Jacobi. (BAIER, Johann Jakob).
First edition. Small 4to. (viii), 102 pp. Contemporary full vellum, gilt lettered morocco label, the 19th century armorial bookplate of Cecil Deedes to the front pastedown. Frontispiece and 6 folding plates of fossils, all finely engraved by Johann Georg Puschner. Slight wear to the spine label, a little foxing to the frontispiece and some light marginal dampstaining at intervals, a very good copy overall. An uncommon and groundbreaking work in the sciences of geology and palaeontology, being an early attempt to provide a systematic classification of the fossils found in and around Nuremberg. The work paved the way for later analyses of fossils and the history of the earth on a more scientific basis. Baier proposed issuing additional volumes, but only managed a single supplement (published 1730) before his early death at the age of 58. His son Ferdinand subsequently published an equally scarce second supplement in 1757 and an expanded second edition a year later using his papers. The fine plates feature just under 200 illustrations of samples collected.

Henri Abraham CHATELAIN (1684 - 1743)
Incisione in rame, finemente colorata a mano, in ottime condizioni." Decorative double hemisphere map of the World, from Chatelain's monumental 7 volume Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam. The two hemispheres are divided into a grid with a corresponding key. They are surrounded by a lengthy table, which identifies the locations of principlal cities, bodies of water, islands, and other geographical features across the globe. The routes of prominent explorers are shown mapped out on both hemispheres, along with a list charting their travels. North America is still vastly unexplored with an uncharted western coastline. Australia and New Guinea are joined into one large landmass. This fine map is a wonderful example from Chatelain's important text. By combining a wealth of information and geographical observation, with delicate engraving and an uncomplicated composition, this elegant map is a superb example from the golden age of French mapmaking. ANATOMY)
A most unusual scroll concerning the organs central to traditional Chinese medicine's concept of how the human body works: heart, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney along with the small intestine, large intestine, gall bladder, urinary bladder, stomach, and the so-called "triple burner." In Japan, the study of traditional Chinese medicine, which was introduced in the 6th century, is known as kanpo. By the 15th and 16th century, kanpo began to have independent concepts, diverging from traditional Chinese and Buddhist practices and theories. The manuscript begins with kanji characters ("Ihomyo" or "Yuihomyo") saying "Thoughts about the Buddhist way of life pulse." This is followed by images of the five organs, all color coded (lung is white, heart is red, liver is blue, spleen is yellow, and kidney is black), then follows a similar image of their corresponding elements: air, metal, fire, water, and earth, labelled in Sanskrit and with the directions in Japanese. Extensive text is next with a description of the organs and the meridians. The next image depicts the organs which is followed by an illustration of a head with the five elements below: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The next illustration depicts the spine and the "triple burner." Individual parts of the body are shown next: eyes, tongue, ears, bones, muscles, blood, nose, skin, teeth, meat, finger, breast, energy, and hair. Next is a depiction of the entire anterior body with the spine revealed. Each bone of the spine has a number which are connected to a specific organ. Pressure points are displaye … [Click Below for Full Description]
