Henry More
1708 The theological works of Henry More fellow of Christ's College Cambridge Printed and sold by Joseph Downing London The theological works of the most pious and learned Henry More . containing an explanation of the general mystery of godliness, and enquiry into the mystery of iniquity ; in two parts . according to the author's improvements in his Latin edition First edition, folio, pp. 856; engraved frontispiece portrait. He attempted to use the details of 17th-century mechanical philosophy--as developed by René Descartes--to establish the existence of immaterial substance. More (1712) rejected Cartesian dualism on the following grounds: "It would be easier for me to attribute matter and extension to the soul, than to attribute to an immaterial thing the capacity to move and be moved by the body.' His difficulties with Cartesian Dualism arose, not from an inability to understand how material and immaterial substances could interact, but from an unwillingness to accept any unextended entity as any kind of real entity. More continues "...it is plain that if a thing be at all it must be extended." So for More 'spirit' too must be extended. This led him to the idea of a 'fourth dimension" in which the spirit is e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lawsuit brought by Doña Theresa Muños de Ahumada, widow of Francisco Vazquez and her stepdaughter against Don Joseph de Luna. This Hacienda was subsequently bought by Joseph de Luna who had to the pay the 800 pesos to the Countess. In order to extract this money from Vazquez he tried to put an embargo on the Hacienda de Santa Rita, the property of Vazquez. This led him to the idea of a 'fourth dimension" in which the spirit is … [Click Below for Full Description]

CELLARIUS, Andreas
SCHENK, Gerard and VALK, Peter, 1708. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Framed: 25 1/2" x 28". Image: 16 3/4" x 19 3/4". (no glazing with frame) This celestial chart shows the heliocentric model of the universe, as proposed by the Polish astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus, in the first half of the 16th Century. Originally published by Cellarius in his Harmonia Macrocosmica, the map illustrates the Copernican system of the Universe, as described by Copernicus in his De revolutionibus orbium coelestium in 1543. His heliocentric model, with the Sun at the center of the universe, demonstrated that the observed motions of celestial objects can be explained without the Earth in the center of the universe. His work spurred further scientific investigations, becoming a landmark in the history of science that is often referred to as the Copernican Revolution. The model lays on a background of clouds and cherubs. In the bottom left corner is a blindfolded man sitting with a globe. In the bottom right, sits a man holding a torch. Small repairs upper center ring, repairs and image loss to Africa and lower ring. Andreas Cellarius (1595-1665) is the author of the Harmonia Macrocosmica (first published in 1660), a folio-sized work that is one of the most spectacular cosmographical atlases that was published. Gerard Valk (1652-1726) was a based publisher, engraver and globe maker from Amsterdam. He moved to London and 1672 where he worked with other map and print sellers. He later began working closely with Petrus Schenk. Although they never shared the same premises, the two worked closel … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite, wherein The Proportions and Characters of the Members Of their several Pedestals, Columns and Entablatures, are distinctly consider'd, with respect to the Practice of the Antients and Moderns. Also a most Natural, Easie and Practicable Method laid down for determining the most minute Part in all the Orders, without a Fraction. To which is Annex'd a Discourse concerning Pilasters: and of several Abuses introduc'd into Architecture. by Charles Perrault, translated by John James and illustrated by John Sturt From 1708, the first English-language edition of this highly influential architectural treatise. The work was originally published in France in 1683 but did not find a wide audience until this edition was published in London. It was the first truly significant architectural work to circulate in England, and it inspired a spate of books on architecture over the next century. An extremely rare volume. I find one other copy of the first edition for sale online, listing for $9,500. The book remains in good shape overall but has some flaws. Five of the six folio plates are missing, and one small illustration was removed with a circular incision (fourth photo). Some 75 further illustrations are present and in very good shape. The title page is missing a bit of text on the bottom edge, but this was apparently due to a printing error and not later trimming; no other page is so affected. (OBSTETRICS, WOMEN AUTHORS). SIGMUNDIN [SIEGEMUND], JUSTINA
Berlin: Joh. Michael Rudiger, 1708. First Berlin Edition. First published in 1690, this is one of the earliest obstetrical treatises to be written by a woman, a work based on the careful notes Justina Siegemund made during her long career as "the most celebrated of the German midwives of the 17th century," in the words of Garrison-Morton. Presented in the form of a dialogue between Siegemund and her pupil Christina, "The Court Midwife" was systematic and evidence-based in its presentation of possible childbirth complications, including problems like poor presentations, umbilical cord problems, and placenta previa and their management. In the textbook, Siegmund presented a solution to the delivery of a shoulder presentation, in those days an often-catastrophic situation leading to the death of the baby and potentially the mother. She worked out a two-handed intervention to rotate the baby in the uterus, securing one extremity by a sling. According to Garrison-Morton, "With Mauriceau, Justine Siegemundin was responsible for introducing the practice of puncturing the amniotic sac to arrest haemorrhage in placenta praevia." Siegemund (1636-1705) educated herself in obstetrics after suffering terribly as a young woman at the hands of an incompetent midwife. In 1659, she began to provide midwifery services to peasant women in her area, gradually finding clients among the wealthier merchant classes. Her expertise and dexterity caught the attention of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg who in 1683 appointed her as his court midwife termed the "Chur-Brandenburgische Hof-Wehe … [Click Below for Full Description]
