FLEETWOOD, William, Bishop of Ely.
London: Printed for Charles Harper, 1707. Octavo (192 x 114 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, red label to spine, spine gilt to compartments, covers panelled in blind with foliate cornerpieces, red speckled edges. Bookplate to pastedown. Discreetly refurbished with joints and extremities repaired. A very good, clean copy. First edition of this landmark in the history of econometrics. Chronicon Preciosum was the first major historical survey of prices, wages and income. In answer to a question about an Oxford Fellowship, Fleetwood set out to determine historical changes in the value of money. "But his treatise took a wider range; it brought together all the information he could find on the value of money and the prices of commodities during the Middle Ages in England; and it is still well worth consulting" (Palgrave II, 89). "Although in his price comparison Fleetwood did not go so far as to think of weighting his individual items according to their importance in a shopping basket, he did see the need to have a single magnitude, however approximate, as an index of change" (Stone). The index worked out by Fleetwood has proved notably accurate: the figures in E.H. Phelps Brown's and S.V. Hopkins' 1956 assessment of seven centuries of prices of consumables revealed a remarkable proximity to Fleetwood's results. 1707. London: , 17981803. Folio (430 x 263 mm). Contemporary half calf, titles in gilt on red morocco spine labels, raised bands ruled in gilt, marbled boards. Text in double column. Engraved hand-coloured folding map, 11 engraved plates depicting distillery apparatus, tables throughout. Binding expertly restored, labels renewed, a little rubbed, internally browned, and with scattered foxing; a very good copy. First collected edition of these fifteen parliamentary reports, including Sylvester Douglas's indispensable two-part survey of the Scottish whisky industry, and three further reports, together illustrating the culmination of parliament's continued attempts to regulate the Scottish distilleries over the course of the eighteenth century following the Act of the Union in 1707. First is a series of three reports submitted by William Eden between 24 December 1783 and 23 March 1784 and discussing the smuggling of various commodities, including whisky. The first of these three also touches on "frauds in the internal duties on brewery, distillery, malt"; the second focuses on Scotland, demonstrating "both the forcible and piratical practices, as also the inland smuggling of foreign goods", and outlines details regarding exemption from and evasion of distillery duties; the third proposes methods of preventing the smuggling trade, and gives a list of bounties, premiums and allowances. The year, 1784, saw the introduction of the Wash Act, one of the formative moments in the history of the distilleries. It lowered whisky duties in England and the Scottish Lowlands, but maintaine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robins, Benjamin
First edition of the text that made ballistics a Newtonian science. Author Benjamin Robins (1707-1751) was one of the leading Newtonians of the 18th century, entering the public eye at age twenty when he published his demonstration of the final proposition of Newton's treatise on quadratures in the Transactions of the Royal Society. In addition to public disputation on various aspects of Newtonian physics and mathematics, he was particularly interested in engineering applications, and studied "bridges, harbours, mills, and navigable rivers" before "fortifications and artillery emerged as his central engineering concern" (ODNB). Robins applied for a post at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and, though unsuccessful, the course material he prepared became the basis for the present work. "New Principles of Gunnery transformed ballistics into a Newtonian science. Galileo's vacuum theory was the only practical theory before 1742, but only for low-velocity mortars as demonstrated in Bélidor's Le bombardier français (1731). Robins made it applicable for gunpowder weaponry in general. His key contribution was the invention and utilization of the ballistic pendulum. With Huygens's law of pendulum motion and Newton's law of linear momentum, he deduced the bullet's impact velocity from the subsequent swing angle. Robins then used the ballistic pendulum to verify his interior-ballistics theory, relying on Boyle's law, the thirty-ninth proposition from book one of the Principia, and the pneumatic chemistry techniques of Francis Hauksbee the elder and Stephen Hales. By applying Newt … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Rarissima. A very rare map taken from Coronelli's "Teatro della Guerra diviso in XXXXVIII parti" published in Venice (though the front page says Naples) between 1706 and 1709. The collection contains hundreds of views, geographic maps and sea charts depicting the entire world. Ermanno Ermao, who studied Coronelli's production, wrote "it is not easy to determine how many and which are the volumes that belong to the collection ". The volume that describes the Kingdom of Naples has been published in 1707. Some of the maps derive from those already published in the Isolario in 1696, with minor changes; nonetheless, the majority of the views has been realized exclusively for this collection. Copper engraving, in perfect condition. Extremely rare.

GAROFALO, Biagio (1677-1762
Rome: Francesco Gonzaga, 1707. Two parts in one volume, 4to (236 x 171 mm). Roman and Hebrew types. Half-title. xvi, 61, [1]; 131 pp. Two woodcut initials, woodcut device on title. 18th-century Italian vellum over pasteboard. Some pale spotting, first few leaves with marginal dampstain and a few small marginal losses, covers lightly soiled. Item #402992 FIRST EDITION of Garofalo's heterodox study of Greek and Jewish poetry. Garofalo was the first Neapolitan to enter the debate concerning Hebrew poetry at the beginning of the 18th century. "In the first decade of the century he was one of the few who dared to publish what he had learned from the ideas of Biblical criticism proposed by Spinoza and Richard Simon. [In this work] Garofalo dealt first with the explosive issue of the authority of the Hebrew Biblical text contending as had Spinoza and Simon, that it was in need of textual revision. He discussed the custom of all ancient peoples of preserving their laws in poetry. In the second part of the work he explained how Greek poets were expected to use popular fictions to persuade the uneducated to chose right behaviors. Such examples supported the Arcadian claim concerning the value of poetry in reforming the bad habits of people. On the issue of whether Hebrew used rhyme or rhythm Garofalo sided with the Protestant Le Clerc" (Harold Samuel Stone, Vico's Cultural History: The Production and Transmission of Ideas in Naples, New York, 1997, p. 198). He substantiated his arguments with a mass of statistical documentation practically unprecedented and, in doing so, pioneered the use of statistics in economics. The idea, which occurred to Vauban as he made observations on his constant travels throughout the kingdom, was intended to help France overcome an economic crisis and keep its rank as a great power. As the situation worsened, in 1706 Vauban had his book secretly printed in François Maurry's Rouen press and gave his entourage the first copies, bound in Paris at the widow Fétil's. The French government, too deeply committed to the system of tax farming (i.e., selling the right to collect taxes to groups of financiers for a fixed sum), was reluctant and … [Click Below for Full Description]

(HATMAKERS, Antwerp Guild of.)
[Antwerp, 1707. Manuscript, small folio (310 × 200 mm), 62 leaves bearing text (usually on both sides), numerous blanks at rear. Text in Dutch throughout, usually legible. Original parchment wallet binding with overlapping flap, title in bold calligraphic manuscript to upper cover. Quite soiled, minor loss to vellum at spine and fore-edge, wanting ties, but essentially sound. An eighteenth-century account book of the guild of hatmakers in the city of Antwerp, covering nearly 70 years. The Antwerp hatmakers were an important craft organization with a well-regulated structure. Their accounts were overseen by aldermen, each serving for several years, who recorded income (usually in the the form of entry fines for new members) and expenditure (usually payment for the guilds officials). One of the major expenditures was the payment of the 'proefmeesters' who exercised quality control by examining the products of prospective entrants before admitting them to membership. The accounts provide a detailed record of the names of entrants to the guild and of guild officials. They also provide much incidental detail of the position of the craft within the regional economy, with frequent expenditures recording contact with the neighbouring towns of Brussels, Mechelen and Bruges. .
