Francesco Gonzaga, Rome 1707 - Two parts in one volume, 4to (236 x 171 mm). Roman and Hebrew types. Half-title. xvi, 61, [1]; 131 pp. Two woodcut initials, woodcut device on title. 18th-century Italian vellum over pasteboard. Some pale spotting, first few leaves with marginal dampstain and a few small marginal losses, covers lightly soiled. FIRST EDITION of Garofalo's heterodox study of Greek and Jewish poetry. He was the first Neapolitan to enter the debate concerning Hebrew poetry at the beginning of the 18th century. "In the first decade of the century he was one of the few who dared to publish what he had learned from the ideas of Biblical criticism proposed by Spinoza and Richard Simon. [In this work.] Garofalo dealt first with the explosive issue of the authority of the Hebrew Biblical text contending as had Spinoza and Simon, that it was in need of textual revision. He discussed the custom of all ancient peoples of preserving their laws in poetry. In the second part of the work he explained how Greek poets were expected to use popular fictions to persuade the uneducated to chose right behaviors. Such examples supported the Arcadian claim concerning the value of poetry in reforming the bad habits of people. On the issue of whether Hebrew used rhyme or rhythm Garofalo sided with the Protestant Le Clerc" (Harold Samuel Stone, 'Vico's Cultural History: The Production and Transmission of Ideas in Naples, New York, 1997, p. 198).         NAAUKEURIGE VERSAMELING DER GEDENK-WAARDIGSTE ZEE EN LAND- REYSEN NA OOST EN WEST-INDIËN...

Leyden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1707. 127 parts in twenty-eight volumes (with volume 13 in two), with 107 engraved folding maps and 505 folding plates. Later calf, spines gilt, gilt morocco labels. Some hinges cracked, spines chipping lightly, boards rubbed in places. Some toning and light foxing internally. Still a very good, handsome set. A complete first octavo edition of Pieter Van der Aa's comprehensive collection of memorable voyages translated into Dutch, which includes over 500 engraved views, as well as 107 engraved maps. Van de Aa's spectacular production gathers travel accounts of voyages from 1246- 1696 from reputable sources such as De Bry, Hakluyt, Herrera, de Barros, Thevenot, and includes all of the earliest voyages to the Americas such as Columbus, Vasco de Gama, Cortes, Drake, as well as all other major and minor European voyages. A folio edition was also planned and begun simultaneously, but then abandoned and eventually completed in 1727. Pieter Van der Aa was an accomplished Leiden publisher, who was eventually named chief printer for the city and for the university in 1715. His output consisted largely of repackaging known texts and maps into sets and atlases, as here. Though he lacked creativity, his work is nevertheless remarkable for the exactness and quality of its production in combination with the scope of the projects that he undertook. The texts compiled here are principally gathered from other published works and translated into Dutch, and many of the maps and engravings are taken from the work of Johann Lodewyk Gottfried, whom he credits on the titlepages of the later folio edition, but not in the present octavo volumes. "This collection includes the most remarkable voyages and travels made by the Portuguese, Spaniards, English, Dutch and other nations in various parts of the world, though chiefly in the East and West Indies.... Each of the narratives in the collection are separately paged and have separate title pages.... [In the octavo edition,] they are placed chronologically or are intended so to be throughout twenty-eight volumes, beginning with the narrative of Duplan Carpin, the Pope's Nuncio in Tartary in 1246-7, and ending with GOD's PROTECTING PROVIDENCE of John Dickinson in 1696" - JCB. For a complete listing of voyages relating to America, see the entry in European Americana; for a complete listing of all voyages (though ordered differently), see the entry for the folio edition in the John Carter Brown Library catalogue. Excessively rare as a complete set, and very seldom encountered on the market thus. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 707/2. JCB (1)III:88. JCB (1)III:398 (ref). LeCLERC 1059. NICHOLSON A5. SABIN 3. TIELE 5.

Tabula Selenographica in qua Lunarium Macularum exacta Descriptio secundum Nomenclaturam

Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist, 1707. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18.75" x 22.5". Page size 22" x 25" Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18.75" x 22.5". Page size 22" x 25". This fascinating map shows the competing lunar geographies (seleographies) of Johannes Hevelius and Giovanni Battista Riccioli. Both of the two hemispheres shown the general area of the moon, but their shading and nomenclature vary based on their references. On the left, Hevelius's foundational work strives for an accurate if impossible view, with all features evenly distributed and lit by morning light. His naming conventions, which prevailed until the mid-18th-century, associate lunar landforms with earthly locales such as Sicilia, Mare Mediterranea, and Persia. Hevelius's pioneering work laid the foundation for later revisions such as those by Riccoli and Francesco Grimaldi, which appear on the right hemisphere. This later map introduces the nomenclature that we generally use today, with features of the moon labeled with evocative and sometimes reverential names. Craters and seas are rendered more distinctly, creating an overall more dramatic appearance that compliments the improved knowledge Riccoli and Grimaldi brought to selenography. Around the two hemispheres, diagrams describe the phases if the moon, and two decorative illustrations in the top corners show cherubs looking with a telescope toward a representation of Diana, the ancient Greek goddess of the Moon. Below the map, text panels in Latin explain the science of selenography. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold and minor foxing at places. Appropriate original coloring with the cartouches left black and white. Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a renowned German mapmaker of the late 17th and early 18th century, including being geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers.

With engraved frontispiece and 72 large engraved nautical charts (33 double-page and 39 single-page, plate size about 50 x 68 and 48 x 35 cm). Uniform contemporary mottled, gold-tooled calf, with the crowned French royal arms on each board and "Conseil de la Marine" below it on each front board. Rebacked, with most of the original backstrips laid down. Paris, Jean-Claude Dezauche (colophon: Brest, printed by Romain-Nicolas Malassis), 1775. (4) APRÈS DE MANNEVILLETTE, Jean-Baptiste d'. Supplément au Neptune oriental, ...Paris, Antoine Guénard Demonville; Brest, Romain-Nicolas Malassis, 1781. Large 4to (26 x 21 cm). 2 volumes bound as 1. "Maroquin"-pattern sheepskin (ca. 1840?), gold-tooled spine.

Cordier, Sinica 134; Cat. Nat. Mar. Mus. 204; Howgego A107; Phillips & Le Gear 3166, 3167 & 3168. Greatly expanded second edition, plus the rarer posthumous supplement published a year after the author's death, of one of the greatest maritime atlases in the history of French cartography, devoted to exotic regions (the Middle East including the Gulf, the African coasts, the Indian Ocean and East Indies, Southeast Asia, parts of the Chinese coast, and the Pacific islands). Each section starts with a large territorial overview map and closes in on particular area in the subsequent charts. For example the Arabian Peninsula is first displayed on a large overview map showing the coasts along the Indian ocean, which is followed by a chart of the Arabian Sea, and separate charts of the coasts along the entry to the Red Sea, the complete Red Sea, in front of Jeddah and the Arabian Gulf.It was compiled by Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas-Denis d' Après de Mannevillette (1707-1780), hydrographer to the French navy, supported by the French East India Company and the Académie des Sciences. "It was at once hailed as a major achievement and welcomed by navigators throughout the world" (Cat. Nat. Mar. Mus.). D'Après continued to improve and expand it for the rest of his life, serving as director of the Company's nautical chart publishing office from 1762. One rarely finds two copies of Le neptune oriental with the same make-up, but the present copy shows its full extent immediately after D'Après's death. The whole is not only a magnificent collection of sea charts, but also an essential key to understanding European colonial power ca. 1780.The present copy of the Neptune may have first belonged to the Secrétairerie d'État. In 1806 Napoleon revived the Conseil de la Marine, which had been replaced by the Secrétairerie d'État in 1723, so those words must have been added in 1806. Also with bookplates. With a couple charts slightly browned (one of them also with an unintended crease), a few pages in the Instructions (mostly in its supplement) with a marginal worm trail, and an occasional very minor hole or spot, but generally in very good condition (most leaves of the Instructions fine). The Neptune has been expertly rebacked as noted, with the loss of parts of the backstrips, but the bindings of the Neptune and Instructions are otherwise very good. A splendid maritime atlas, beautifully bound for the French navy.

        Ephemerides Motuum Coelestium Geometricae

Artist: Homann / Doppelmayer JG Johann Babtiste ca ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca1707 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 57; - description: Map of the ephemerides, the predicted positions of the planets for the years 1708 and 1709.; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad. Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

In Witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my Name, and caused the common Seal of the said City to be affixed the [blank] day of [blank] in the [blank] year of the Reign of our Soveraign Lady ANNE, by the Grace of God, Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland, D

broadside, half-sheet, oblong folio, measuring 11 ½ by 7 ¼ inches, printed on laid, watermarked paper, paper lightly browned, else very good. The earliest known retail liquor license at least for New York City, printed by William Bradford who was the royal printer in New York during the reign of Queen Anne, 1702-1714, and the onlyprinter working in New York during that time. Bradford (1663-1752) was the "pioneering printer of the English middle colonies", and set up the first press in Pennsylvania in 1685, and the first in New York, where he resettled in 1693. (DAB). This broadside was meant to be completed in manuscript. The text makes clear that both men and women were eligible to be licensed tavern keepers, the blanks could either he completed, his, or hers. This is styled "in the reign of ... Anne ... Queen of Great Britain..." which would place it between 1707 when Great Britain was created under the Acts of Union between England and Scotland, and 1714, within the second decade of New York printing. The broadside is interesting because the license was not granted solely as means of taxation, but its broader purpose, as stated within the text, was a means of social control, the suppression of gambling, politically disruptive "meetings" etc. OCLC lists four holdings (NYPL, LCP, AAS, NYHS).

The ornithological section of Buffon's famous Histoire naturelle, with the first 8 volumes in the first edition and the 9th volume in the new edition published in Amsterdam and Dordrecht, the only quarto edition to rival the original French Imprimerie Royale edition.''A great number of species are enumerated and described in this work, which is one of the chief works of ornithological literature'' (Anker). The birds are dealt with under their vernacular names. ''The collaborator for the first six volumes of the text was Ph. Guéneau de Montbeillard, who also wrote the section "Hirondelles" in vol. VII. The Abbé G.L.C.A. Bexon then assisted with the remainder of the bird section, so that Montbeillard could devote himself entirely to the insects'' (Anker).Georges Louis Leclerc (1707-1788) -- in 1717 his father became Comte de Buffon and Louis XV later made Georges Comte de Buffon -- was an inconspicuous student who only showed a special talent for mathematics. Initially he combined a career in finance with one in science, translating important works by Hales and Newton into French. In 1739 Buffon became director of the Jardin du Roi, later the Jardin des Plantes, and the Histoire naturelle may have originated as a description of the royal collection. It appeared from 1749 to 1804 and eventually comprised 44 volumes. Buffon was assisted among others by the anatomist Louis Daubenton, and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.The last volume lacks the last leaf (the ''Avis au relieur'' giving a list of the plates). The bindings show some scratches and minor wear but are structurally sound. One of the most important early landmarks in the history of ornithology

Paris: widow of Claude Barbin,, 1707. Contes turcs. Duodecimo in fours and eights (159 x 92 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments. Gilt bookplate of French physician and bibliophile Tibulle Desbarreaux-Bernard (1798-1880) to the front free endpaper; contemporary ownership inscription ("Simon Chirury") and later ink-stamp ("E. T. Simon, D. T") to title page. Binding expertly refurbished, mild craquelure to spine now stabilised, a few faint scores to rear board, pastedowns abraded in places, revealing lining made from a contemporary manuscript to the rear, upper-outer corners of text-block faintly creased, small tear to G1 costing a few letters either side, the sense unimpaired, spill-burn to I6, short closed tear to fore edge Dd2, a few other light marks. A very good copy. First edition of this important collection of oriental tales now known as the Forty Viziers, published three years after Galland's first edition of the Thousand and One Nights, and following its characteristic frame-narrative structure. Notably rare: one copy traced at auction, one in British institutions (SOAS), and six worldwide; bibliographers including Chauvin and Macdonald claimed never to have seen a copy. A second edition with an Amsterdam imprint appeared later the same year and is similarly rare. An English translation was published by Tonson the year after. The frame-narrative echoes the Biblical story of Potiphar's Wife, concerning a young prince who refuses the advances of his stepmother, who then denounces him to the sultan. The prince is put on trial, by means of alternate tales told by the sultana and the forty viziers. De la Croix (1653-1713), dragoman to Louis XIV, attributes the Turkish original to one Chéc Zadé, tutor to Ottoman ruler Murad II (r. 1421-51), but is now thought that that the tales date back to Arabic original no longer extant, possibly written in Egypt for the Turkic ruler al-Ikhshid (r. 935-46), and that two writers were involved in its production: "an Ahmed-i Misri [Ahmed the Egyptian] who translated the work from Arabic and presented it to Murad II (r. 1421-51), and a Sheykh Zade who took up the text later, presenting it to both Murad II and Mehmed II (r. 1451-81)" (Burrill, Sheykh-Zade, EI2). The work was to leave an influential trail, and European authors to have read it include Hans Christian Andersen, who used it as a source for The Emperor's New Clothes.

        Systema Solare et Planetarium

Iohann Bapt. Homann and Johann Gabriel Dopplemayr, Nuremberg 1707 - 495 x 574 mm (19-3/8 x 22-3/4 x 24-1/8 inches) plate size plus margins. copper etching, one sheet printed in black, coloured by hand. The map illustrates the solar system by Copernicus with the orbits of the planets and the twelve constellations of the zodiac. The map shows the extent of the knowledge of the solar system and astronomy at the time. The center of the map shows a wonderful representation of the solar system with the sun in the center, the concept which Copernicus had introduced. The lower left corner vignette depicts the eclipse of the sun on May 12, 1706, the others the various theories on the orbits of the planets. Interestingly, this vignette shows California as an island. The upper left vignette shows the then known planets and the Sun; the planets are represented with their diameters to some scale to each other. The upper right corner shows heavenly clouds and solar systems thought to exist elsewhere in the stars. The lower right vignette shows the Goddess of Astronomy, Urania, and below her are three cosmological systems, the Greek, Claudius Ptolemy's, which is somewhat hidden by modern astronomical instruments implying that current astronomers disregard his view. The next one was developed by the Dane ,Tycho Brahe ,where the Earth is in the center orbited by the Sun and the Moon with the other planets orbiting the sun. The last one is labeled "sic ratione" [according to reason] and is the Copernican system again. The "Atlas Novus Coelestis in quo Mundus Spectabilis " was published by Homann's heirs in 1742 and some of the plates were prepared by J. Doppelmayr already in the early 1700s. This plate is one those prepared very early and would have been published prior to the 1742 issuance of the "Atlas Novus."Johann Baptist Homann (1662-1724) was an engraver, cartographer and geographer to the Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire (1715) and was also a member of the Prussian Royal Academy of Science. He founded a cartographic publishing firm which continued in business until 1848. e became a celebrated cartographer already in his lifetime producing maps, charts, terrestrial globes of high quality both in their geographic accuracy and aesthetic appeal.Johann Doppelmayr (1677-1750) was professor of Mathematics in Nuremberg and wrote on astronomy, geography, cartography, spherical trigonometry as well as constructing terrestrial and celestial globes. He was also a member of the Royal Society [London], and both the Berlin and St. Petersburg Academies of Sciences. Doppelmayr - Kanas: Star Maps 2009. [Tooley: Maps and Map-Makers ]. Some rubbing and browning of margins, a few old stab holes, with a few small repairs to tears from the back, overall a very attractive copy This copy of the map predates the 1742 and later editions; it could be as early as 1707 but possibly also 1720.
