HILL, John.
1707. [12], 1-228, 333-592, *457-*592, 593-654, [6]; XXVI, 642; [7], [1 blank]; [8], 584, [4]; pp.First edition of a three-volume work on natural history written by the British botanist, apothecary and physician John Hill (1707?-1775), well-known for his voluminous publications on (natural) science. His main interest was botany, but he also covers zoology, medicine and mineralogy. His A general natural history can be regarded as his main work, because each volume was influential on its own. The history of fossils (vol. 1, labeled 3) is Hill’s first and nearly only publication on mineralogy. He describes the minerals, often based on microscopic examination, and on that basis divides them into series, classes and orders. The folding table at the end of this volume shows a classification system for fossils. The volume on plants (vol. 2, labeled 1) could be regarded as Hill’s major publication on botany. In this volume "Hill introduced the classification system of Linnaeus to England" (DSB). He describes several species and sorts of plants, their physical appearance, size, geographic range and rarity. He describes algae, fungi and cacti, but also flowers such as gladiolas, hyacinths and daffodils. He also describes more exceptional trees, such as the coffee tree and the tamarinde tree, and vegetables and herbs, such as parsnip, anise and coriander. Sometimes the English common names of some plants are printed in gothic type. The volume on animals (vol. 3, labeled 2) describes different classes of the animal kingdom and can be seen as Hill's principal achievement in the field of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Metcalf, Michael
Dedham, Mass: July 10, 1706, 1707. Oblong 12mo, approx. 224 tightly packed pages, in ink. contemporary full vellum; some damstaining on the first and last several leaves, margins of these leaves erose in the margins (with minor loss), but in all a good, sound manuscript in a difficult English hand due to the wide variation in spellings and the similarity in many letter forms. Interestingly, the manuscript exhibits some letter forms and abbreviations of English secretary hand, as well as a more modern-looking cursive. The letters often switch between the two forms, which adds a further degree of difficulty. There is also what looks like Tironian shorthand in a few places. The nature of the manuscript suggests that Metcalf's notes were taken from oral as opposed to written or printed sermons as there is a definite catechetical style to them, with many abbreviations (i c for Jesus Christ, g for God, etc.). There are 3 pages of an index, but not to every sermon, just what we suppose he thought were highlights: for instance, both Increase and Cotton Mather are so cited, even though the Mathers are only present here for one sermon each. The tenor is pretty straight-forward Puritan-Calvinistic theology. Some sermons talk about the way of salvation for the Elect, through Christ's blood as the atoning sacrifice, and the redemption of the natural man ("this body of sin"). Another one talks about the use of prayer; another about the believer being refined in the "furnace of affliction"; another about the importance of having a "comely mind," or rather of setting the mind on comely th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Collectio nova patrum et scriptorum Graecorum, Eusebii Caesariensis, Athanasii, & Cosmae Aegyptii.Paris, Claudius Rigaud, 1707. 2 volumes. Folio. With 4 engraved plates, and 3 woodcut illustrations in the text. Each volume with an engraved headpiece, the first incorporating the coat of arms of Pope Clement XI, and the second that of Jean-Paul Bignon. Contemporary calf, richly gold-tooled spine and binding edges. [14], XL, [1], [1 blank], 732, [26], [2 blank]; [16], LXVIII, 112, [2], I-XXIV, 113-593, [26], [1 blank] pp. First edition, second issue, of a monumental collection of Greek voyages, often overlooked in the literature, including the first complete edition of Cosmas of Alexandria's celebrated Christiana topographia. Cosmas, a merchant from Alexandria, sailed in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf and visited Ethiopia ca. 530. Though he was known as "Indicopleustes", or Indian Voyager, it is doubtful whether he actually visited India. In his Christiana topographia Cosmas aimed to show that the earth was flat and the cosmos shaped like rectangular vaulted box. Several of the engravings in the present volume, reproduced from a manuscript, illustrate this view. One shows the earth as a rectangle with three notches, one notch representing the ArabianGulf, and the whole surrounded by an ocean, with in the east another rectangle representing Paradise, out of which four rivers flow into the inhabited world.Slightly browned, with some occasional minor foxing or thumbing, and some faint stains, otherwise in very good condition. DUGUET, Jacques-Joseph. 1649-1733
Paris: [J. Quillau for] J. Estienne, 1707. VOLUME ONE in contemporary RICHLY GILT RED MOROCCO WITH GILT GREEN MOROCCO DOUBLURES. VOLUME TWO in identically tooled GILT GREEN MOROCCO WITH GILT RED MOROCCO DOUBLURES.  Repetitions of a crossed feather tool, a foliage spray and a pointillé tulip make up the wide outer frame of the four exterior panels (slight loss to a small portion of gilt). A gilt foliage frame decorates the four morocco pastedowns (two green, two red), spines gilt and lettered, all edges gilt over marbling, blue silk marker in Vol. I, green silk marker in Vol. II. Apparently uncontroversial work (at least to modern eyes), this had at least nine printings during its first two years in circulation. In the Avis facing the title-page, the exclusive holder of the royal privilege, Jacques Estienne, complains of rampant piracy and of "copies très défectueuses". A highly visible theologian with a wide following, Duguet originally joined the Oratorians but withdrew from the order, when he refused to condemn Jansenism, the tenets of which the Traittez is infused.  A most unusual set with the exterior of each volume paired with its mate's interior. In fine condition, partly effaced stamp front flyleaf of each volume.

Frankfurt a.M, Gleditsch, 1707. 8 Bll., 112 S. Pappband d. Zt.
