CELLARIUS, Andreas (c.1596-1665)
Amsterdam: G. Valk & P.Schenk, 1708. Copper-engraved celestial map, with full original colour, later marginal colour. One of the finest and most highly decorative celestial charts ever produced, from the Valk & Schenk edition of CellariusThis composition, of great artistic élan, presents a view of the constellations of the Northern Sky superimposed over the North Pole, Europe and northern Asia. It is from the Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus (Harmonious Universe or New and Universal Atlas) by Andreas Cellarius, the finest celestial atlas ever produced. According to Classical astronomy, championed by Aristotle and Ptolemy, the stars were mounted on a huge, transparent crystal sphere that was part of a geocentric system, in which all of the stars and planets revolved around the Earth. The present image was first engraved in 1660 by Jan Janssonius, during the great era of Dutch map-making, a period that saw the perfection of the art of representing scientific ideas in graphic form through engraving. It was reprinted by Janssonius in 1661, and again in 1708 by Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk, who added their names to the plates. Andreas Cellarius was born in about 1596 in Neuhausen, a small town near Worms in the Rhine-Hesse region of Germany. From 1625 to 1637 Cellarius worked as a schoolmaster in Amsterdam and The Hague, and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he was appointed as headmaster or rector of the Latin School. He published a number of works during his lifetime, but the last and greatest was the Harmonia Macrocosmica. Cellarius resigned from … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHEUCHZER, J.J.
Londini, H. Clements, 1708. 3 parts (bound in 1 volume). 4to (226 x 175mm). pp. (4), (2), 57, (1); (2), 72; (2), 22, with 1 engraved portrait (of Scheuchzer), 3 engraved frontispieces and 41 (2 folded & 1 partly coloured) engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine with later rebacking. First edition, which was published at the expense of the Royal Society. It is interesting for its connection with Sir Isaac Newton - the frontispieces to the three parts having been printed at his expense. Johan Jacob Scheuchzer (1672-1733; physician and scientist in Zurich) was the first to travel in Switzerland with mathematical and physical instruments. From 1702 onwards he travelled in the Alps year for year. The results have been published in the above work, the first scientific research papers dealing with natural history, palaeontology, physics and glaciology - a science, which was established by him. The finely engraved plates of the work (all in clear and strong impressions) depict plants, machinery, watercourses, alpine walkways, minerals, etc. An important classic, containing "fascinating details of the mountain journeys that Scheuchzer made all over Switzerland including his thoughts on the movement of glaciers" (Hoover 718). There is a general title to the book and part titles to the three parts.Ward & Carozzi 1966. [Attributes: First Edition]

Amstelaedami [Amsterdam], ex officina Wetsteniana, 1708. 4to. pp. [xviii], 476, [lxxii] + 8 engraved plates, but lacking the additional engraved title-page. Edited by Johan van Broekhuizen. Some spotting. Contemporary blind-stamped vellum.Ink stamp of Repton School library to title. From the library of the great English bibliophile Michael Wodhull (1740-1816), classical scholar and Dibdin's 'Orlando', who attended every London book sale between 1764 and 1800 and bought extensively but, as De Ricci says, with great judgement. He normally recorded the date, place of acquisition and price paid on the flyleaf. In this instance Edwards’s sale, March 3d 1794; the purchase price appears to be encoded. Wodhull neatly excised much of this information in books which he consigned to auction himself in 1801 and 1803, so our example likely remained with the bulk of his library, auctioned by Sotheby’s in 1886.
