Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni." 1708. Great antique law related book for your collection. Possibly owned by a US Senator from Delaware. See item description and pics below. Antique Book Report on Diverse Cases in Pleas of the Crown 1708 King Charles II Item Description Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our US customers! Here is a great antique law book for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself. Great old law book dealing with A Report of Diverse Cases in Pleas of the Crown in the Reign of the Late King Charles II. The book was printed by Isaac Cleabe in London, England. The cases were collected by Sir John Kelyng, Knt. (for Knight). What makes this book even more interesting was that it is attributed to having been owned at one time by John Middleton Clayton whom served as a DE Senator to the US Senate 3 different times between 1829 thru 1856 and also served as Secretary of State in the Zachary Taylor administration. This book does not have John M. Clayton's signature or ink stamp mark in it. There is a John written on the title page by a quill pen, but then the rest of the signature was cut out. I was able to pick up a number of the Senator Clayton's books that were once in his library at some time in the past, some of those books going back to 1640. I will note the listing numbers for some of those other books are they are made available for sale separately in our store. John Clayton was the cousin of Thomas Clayton whom also served in the US Government during the same time period. Clayton Hall at the University of Delaware w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes Tauler
London: 1708 first edition 'Printed and sold by Joseph Downing in Bartholomew-Close near West-Smithfield' (London), 4 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches tall orange cloth over leather spine, gilt lettering and ruling to spine, xlii, 300, [4] pp. Covers somewhat rubbed, especially to tips. Title page lightly soiled to margins. Foxing to blank rear endpaper. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare first edition. The English Short Title Catalog (No. T121738) locates copies at only three institutions worldwide - the British Library, Chetham's Library in Manchester and the National Library of Scotland - to which ESTC (No. 315514378) adds Haverford College Library in Pennsylvania. A translation, according to the subtitle of this work, 'from the High Dutch,' apparently by Anton Wilhelm Bohme (1673-1722), a German Lutheran royal chaplain at St. James's Palace in London known as an author and translator. A copy was said to have been in the library of English poet John Byrom (1692-1763), for whom Tauler was influential (Ward, Sacred Poems of John Byrom, Chetham Society 1895, p.383). A handsome copy of this rare translation. ~LR1~ Johannes Tauler (circa 1300-1361) was a German mystic, a Catholic preacher and a theologian. A disciple of Meister Eckhart, he belonged to the Dominican order. Tauler was known as one of the most important members of the Rhineland Mystics. He promoted a certain neo-platonist dimension in the Dominican spirituality of his time. [Attributes: First Edition]

HALLER, Albrecht von.
First and only edition of a work comprising a number of botanical essays written by the Swiss naturalist and anatomist Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777). "In 1749 he collected his isolated observations of the genera and species of plants, and on their fructification; and published them in a volume entitled Opuscula botanica" (Jardine). The work consists of six parts. The first deals with Haller's journey through the Alps in 1731, studying its flora. The second is a lecture on the methodological study of botany: "Haller was among the first botanists to realize the importance of herbaria to study variation in plants and he therefore purposely included material from different localities, habitats and developmental phases. Haller also grew many plants in the Alps himself" (Stafleu & Cowan). The following parts deal successively with Haller's botanical research in the "Hercynian Forest" in Germany (1 plate), the use of botany, botanical researches in Switzerland (2 plates), ending with an essay on garlic (2 plates). Some owner's annotations in ink on flyleaf. Title-page and folding plates foxed, leaves only slightly browned with some occasional minor foxing. Binding worn along the extremities. Overall a good copy.Blake, p. 196; W. LOCKE, John.
London: printed for A. and J. Churchill, 1708. Octavo (188 x 113 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, rebacked in sheep and relined, brown morocco label to style. With the booklabel of bookseller and bibliographer John Stephens (1948-2006) to the front pastedown, beneath a pencilled gift inscription dated 1942; a few minor pencilled markings, early emendation to p. 212. Reback now substantially rubbed and worn though still holding, covers with light wear to tips. Contents crisp, with a few instances of soiling, occasional light running peripheral stains, more substantial to final 7 leaves. A good copy. First edition, the first authorized collection of any letters by Locke. Published four years after Locke's death, the volume is presumed to have been compiled and edited by Locke's cousin and principal heir Peter King. The collection comprises three sets of correspondence. The first are the letters between Locke and the Irish experimental philosopher William Molyneux (1656-1698), a correspondence which lasted from 1692 until Molyneux's death. The volume contains the first printed form of the letter sent by Molyneux on 2 March 1693, where he proposed what has since become known as "Molyneux's Problem", which enquires whether a blind man able to distinguish between a sphere and cube by touch would be able to do so if he gained his sight. Both Locke and Molyneux agreed that he could not, and "the problem had profound philosophical implications and became a key topic in British philosophy" (ODNB). Locke referenced the problem in his Essay Concerning Human Understanding in 1689. The s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite, wherein The Proportions and Characters of the Members Of their several Pedestals, Columns and Entablatures, are distinctly consider'd, with respect to the Practice of the Antients and Moderns. Also a most Natural, Easie and Practicable Method laid down for determining the most minute Part in all the Orders, without a Fraction. To which is Annex'd a Discourse concerning Pilasters: and of several Abuses introduc'd into Architecture. by Charles Perrault, translated by John James and illustrated by John Sturt From 1708, the first English-language edition of this highly influential architectural treatise. The work was originally published in France in 1683 but did not find a wide audience until this edition was published in London. It was the first truly significant architectural work to circulate in England, and it inspired a spate of books on architecture over the next century. An extremely rare volume. I find one other copy of the first edition for sale online, listing for $9,500. The book remains in good shape overall but has some flaws. Five of the six folio plates are missing, and one small illustration was removed with a circular incision (fourth photo). Some 75 further illustrations are present and in very good shape. The title page is missing a bit of text on the bottom edge, but this was apparently due to a printing error and not later trimming; no other page is so affected. He attempted to use the details of 17th-century mechanical philosophy--as developed by René Descartes--to establish the existence of immaterial substance. More (1712) rejected Cartesian dualism on the following grounds: "It would be easier for me to attribute matter and extension to the soul, than to attribute to an immaterial thing the capacity to move and be moved by the body.' His difficulties with Cartesian Dualism arose, not from an inability to understand how material and immaterial substances could interact, but from an unwillingness to accept any unextended entity as any kind of real entity. More continues "...it is plain that if a thing be at all it must be extended." So for More 'spirit' too must be extended. Olivier, Friedrich - (1791 - Dessau - 1859)
Later a third commentary, "Sefer Pa'Amon ve-Rimon" (by Mordechai ben Jacob Peshibrom aka "Mordechai Prszybram") from which this volume takes its title, was added.Pardes Rimonim is seen as a foundational work which acts as an comprehensive and encyclopedic summary of Kabbalistic theology, expanding on and synthesizing the original concepts of the Zohar, and is the primary text for Cordoverian Kabbalah. This work was instrumental in p … [Click Below for Full Description]
