BLOCK, Magnus Gabriel
1708 - 4to (190 x 135mm. ) [24], 148, [4]pp., folding woodcut plate of meteorite at p.74, some contemporary notes on title-page and in margins, modern half calf over marbled paper boards, red edges Linköping: Tryckt Åhr First edition. Magnus Gabriel Block (1669-1722), a doctor of medicine from Harderwijk, and physician to Charles XII of Sweden, had studied at Uppsala and travelled widely in Europe, at one time being found in Florence at the court of Cosimo III. In 1702 he visited England. The work is a sceptical history of prophecy and prognostication, and includes not only such figures as Stoeffler, Lucas Gauricus, Petrus de Alliaco, Cardano and others, but also figures like Nostradamus and even Paracelsus (who was a considerable influence on Block) as well as false prophecies of various types, and there are various quotations from Lucretius in one of the sections, including the famous 'Tantum Religio potuit suadere malorum'). To some extent it is based on the Cambridge divine John Spencer's A Discourse concerning prodigies (1663). On p.2 is the following reference to Jonathan Swift's famous anti-Partridge ?Bickerstaff? Prediction for the Year 1708, giving an insight into its rapid circulation around Europe, although Swift's identity remained hidden: 'London 9 april 1708: 'Inclosed I send you the desired pamphlet published under the name of one Isak Bickerstaff . writ by one M. Escourt a Player, for the diversion of the town . he tells you, that Partridge the almanachmaker should dye the 29 march last, and I can assure you, he is now alive .' HALLER, Albrecht von.
Blake, p. 196; W. Jardine, The naturalist's library X, p. 26; Stafleu & Cowan 2308. First and only edition of a work comprising a number of botanical essays written by the Swiss naturalist and anatomist Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777). "In 1749 he collected his isolated observations of the genera and species of plants, and on their fructification; and published them in a volume entitled Opuscula botanica" (Jardine). The work consists of six parts. The first deals with Haller's journey through the Alps in 1731, studying its flora. The second is a lecture on the methodological study of botany: "Haller was among the first botanists to realize the importance of herbaria to study variation in plants and he therefore purposely included material from different localities, habitats and developmental phases. Haller also grew many plants in the Alps himself" (Stafleu & Cowan). The following parts deal successively with Haller's botanical research in the "Hercynian Forest" in Germany (1 plate), the use of botany, botanical researches in Switzerland (2 plates), ending with an essay on garlic (2 plates). Some owner's annotations in ink on flyleaf. Title-page and folding plates foxed, leaves only slightly browned with some occasional minor foxing. Binding worn along the extremities. Overall a good copy.

Artist: Cellarius Andreas - Schenk-Valk; Issued in: Amsterdam; date: c 1708 - Artist: Cellarius Andreas - Schenk-Valk; Issued in: Amsterdam; date: c. 1708; - Condition: Some restoration, margins replaced; This decorative chart is illustrating the Greek Astronomer Aratus' model of the universe, from the 1708 Valk Schenk edition of Andreas Cellarius' Harmonia Cosmographica . . . .This decorative celestial chart is based on the theories of the 3rd century Greek astronomer, Aratus, in which the Earth is at the center of the celestial universe with the Sun and Moon orbiting around it. Andreas Cellarius c. 1596, Neuhausen, Ð 1665, Hoorn) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for his Harmonia Macrocosmica of 1660, a major star atlas, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam.Andreas Cellarius, illustration of the Copernican system, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica 1660.He was born in Neuhausen, now a part of Worms, and was educated in Heidelberg. The Protestant Cellarius may have left Heidelberg at the onset of the Thirty years war in 1618 or in 1622 when the city came in Catholic hands. His activities are unclear at this time but based on his later works it is conjectured he spent time in Poland and may have even worked as a military engineer there. In 1625 he married Catharina Elt(e)mans in Amsterdam, where he worked as school master of a Latin School. After a brief stay in The Hague, the family moved to Hoorn. From 1637 until his death he was rector of the Latin School in Hoorn, where Pieter Anthoniszoon Overtwater was conrector.

DE L'ISLE, Guillaume (1675-1726)
Paris: "Chez l'Auteur sur le Quai de l'Horloge", 1708. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. A foundation map of America. "In 1700, Claude and Guillaume De L'Isle [first] published their foundation map of North America. What better way to usher in the eighteenth century cartographically than with this significant and influential map. It encapsulates an era in which the French exemplified a reliance on scientific mapping and beautifully incorporated it into the earlier influence of decorative augmentation" (Burden). Tooley adds: "A foundation map. The Great Lakes based on Coronelli show the French strong points at Tadousac, Quebec, Fort Sorel, Montreal & Fort Frontenac. the English settlements confined to the east of the Alleghenies, with Fort and River Kinibeki as the border between New England and Acadia. The Mississippi valley area is shown well developed with the recent French settlement of d'Iberville at Bilochy and forts at Bon Secours and St. Louis. In this map De L'Isle corrected longitude positions and was the first to revert to a peninsula form of California." Perhaps most significantly, in the second and subsequent states of the map the mouth of the Mississippi is accurately shown for the first time, being the first map to depict information from the surveys of the D'Iberville expedition. This copy Burden's sixth state, with De L'Isle's address as "Quai de l'Horloge" and with Renard's imprint erased. [18], xxix, 574pp. Engraved frontispiece and 9 plates (some folding); OCLC calls for 7 plates total, apparently not counting the frontispiece and the 2 hors texte plates in signature C. Paris: apud Ludovicum Guerin . . . Viduam Joannis Boudot . . . et Carolum Robustel, 1708. 380 x 248 mm. Blind-tooled vellum ca. 1708, front cover warped, bookplate and ownership inscription removed from front pastedown. Frontispiece creased, upper right corners of first few leaves a bit frayed, title a little soiled but a very good, clean and crisp copy. From the library of Swedish diplomat Ulric Celsing (1731-1805), with his inscription, “Ex libris U. Celsing a Constpte & Piastres” on front pastedown. First Edition of the work that introduced the term “paleography,” and the founding work of Byzantine and Greek paleography in particular. The formal study of paleography and diplomatics (the study of documents) was created by the Benedictine monk Jean Mabillon (1632-1707) in his De re diplomatica (1681); however, the word “paleography” itself was the creation of Mabillon’s pupil Bernard de Montfaucon, who first used it in print in the present work. “What Mabillon did for the study of medieval Latin documents, Montfaucon, after Mabillon’s death the leading member of the congregation of St. Maur, achieved in the field of Greek studies. His monumental work, published the year after Mabillon’s death, also created a new d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leguat, F.

The text and fine engraved plates are very bright and clean, the tan calf binding shows no signs of use, the outer edge of two plates are trimmed a little close but with no loss to image; a tight and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. (xii), xxx, 164; (ii), 180, (29, Table des Matieres), (6, catalogue); 2 frontispiece engraved plates, 32 engraved plates and maps in text (15 are folding). Later full tan calf leather, spine with five raised bands and with red morocco title label lettered in gilt in one compartment, front and rear covers are tooled in blind, 12mo (169 x 98 mm). The volume includes observations on the geography, natural history and native peoples of the islands Rodrigues, Mauritius and Batavia as well as the author's travels to the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena Island. The book is notable in containing Leguat's natural history observations on the now extinct fauna of Rodrigues including the Rodrigues Solitaire, Rodrigues rail, domed and the saddle-backed Rodrigues Giant Tortoises and Newton's parakeet. Leguat was a French Huguenot who had fled France to Holland after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. One Marquis du Quesne had first considered Reunion as a possible colony for Huguenots, but after the French took that over, he fitted out a small frigate, L'Hirondelle, to reconnoiter the Mascarene islands, and to take possession of whatever island was found unoccupied, for that purpose. In 1690 Leguat and nine male volunteers boarded L'Hirondelle for Reunion which they believed had been abandoned by … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: J. Quilau, 1708. First edition. A fine copy, of the first separately published textbook of probability. "In 1708 [Montmort] published his work on Chances, where with the courage of Columbus he revealed a new world to mathematicians" (Todhunter, p. 78). "The Essay (1708) is the first published comprehensive text on probability theory, and it represents a considerable advance compared with the treatises of Huygens (1657) and Pascal (1665). Montmort continues in a masterly way the work of Pascal on combinatorics and its application to the solution of problems on games of chance. He also makes effective use of the methods of recursion and analysis to solve much more difficult problems than those discussed by Huygens. Finally, he uses the method of infinite series, as indicated by Bernoulli (1690)" (Hald, p. 290). "Montmort's book on probability, Essay d'analyse sur les jeux de hazard, which came out in 1708, made his reputation among scientists" (DSB). Based on the problems set forth by Huygens in his De Ratiociniis in Ludo Aleae (1657) (published as an appendix to Frans van Schooten's Exercitationum mathematicarum), the Essay spawned Abraham de Moivre's two important works De Mensura Sortis (1711) and Doctrine of Chances (1718), as well as Jacob I Bernoulli's celebrated Ars Conjectandi (1713). ABPC/RBH list just two copies of this first edition (Christie's 1981 and Hartung 1987). The modern theory of probability is generally agreed to have begun with the correspondence between Pierre de Fermat and Blaise Pascal in 1654 on the solution of the 'Problem of points'; this wa … [Click Below for Full Description]
