PRIDEAUX, Humphrey [1648-1724]
Printed for W. Rogers, London, 1708. Two parts in one, with separate title pages and pagination. Pp. 1 p.l., xxii, [2], 167; 182, [2] ads. Contemporary panelled calf in the Cambridge style, spine with blind rules between raised bands, new label. Binding rubbed at extremities, head and foot of spine a bit eroded, short (1") split to upper front joint, but overall a very good copy. First published in 1697, Humphrey Prideaux's Life Of Mahomet was a popular work, passing through three editions in two years. The author's unflattering account of the life and teachings of Muhammad, whom he terms "the famous impostor", is contrasted with the "Holy Religion" of Christianity, which he argues is free from the "Marks and Properties of Imposture". Rather than simply a biography of the Prophet, the book is primarily intended as a polemical work designed to defend Christianity against the attacks of the deists. CITRUS FRUIT) Volckamer, Johann Christoph.
Nuremberg., 1708- 1714. Nuremberg.. 1708- 1714.. Copper plate engraving, modern handcolor, 12 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches on sheet 13 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Uneven margin at left edge, very good condition. A beautiful engraving from Johann Christoph Volckamer's " Nurnbergische Hesperides ". These plates are modeled after those in Ferrari's 17th century Hesperides (the first publication devoted to citrus fruit) with an image of the fruit in the upper half of the picture, but are enhanced with charming perspective drawings of gardens and views, making them of particular interest to gardeners and garden historians. This plate shows a view of the town of Hummelstein, now an area of Nuremberg, beneath the pink title ribbon and picture of a lemon. At upper right: "Pag. 188 a." There is an informative discussion of this publication in 'An Oak Spring Pomona'. Dunthorne #323. .

1708. with an autograph subscription, sending his "friendship and duty and, moreover, affection and best wishes to begin with, Serene Highness and Prince, beloved Cousin. From your Highness's cousinly and kind letter of the 26th December We learn that it has pleased God to recall from this temporal life your youngest son, Prince Friedrich August . And out of our Christian sympathy with your Highness because of this untimely death, We therefore hope that the Almighty may compensate you by granting you great and lasting prosperity and many happy and joyous events .", he has ended the letter after his titles "My dear Prince, Ever ready to serve you, Your loyal Cousin Georg Ludewig, Elector", 2 sides folio with impression of his papered seal on half of the conjugate blank, Hanover, 15th January lacking bottom half of conjugate leaf, edges frayed, rather browned overall The future King begins his autograph subscription with the old formula "E.L.", standing for "Eure Liebden", literally "Your Belovedness", used only between royals or independent princes. In this respect it is like "Dear Cousin", here "Vetter". "Eure Liebden" is also in the text as "Ew: Lid:". He also writes "Cuhrfürst" for "Elector", instead of the usual spelling "Churfürst" found in the main text.
