[ Baker, Thomas]
London: Printed for A. Bosvile .., 1708. [16],295[1]pp. Octavo. Contemporary paneled calf, raised bands, spine gilt extra. Decorative head and tail pieces. Shallow loss at crown and toe of spine, institutional bookplate on pastedown, 1717 ownership inscription of William Bickford on rear free endsheet (and pencil inscription of descendant on front blank), long tear in terminal blank endsheet, still, a very good, large, crisp copy, printed on heavy paper. Fourth edition. Baker (1656 - 1740) "... was a conservative Anglican clergyman who felt that this dangerous spirit of modernity of the post-revolution era had to be opposed. To this end he thoroughly prepared himself to write a book that would bring out the essential inadequacy of human knowledge and the fatal consequences of an overvaluing of human reason, emphasizing instead the need for a humble and reverent belief in revelation as our only certainty. He was a well-informed amateur, not a scientist or a philosopher, and his Reflections upon Learning (1699), while evidently touching a chord with the general reader-it went through eight editions before 1760-met with severe criticism from specialists. Although the book was published anonymously Baker became involved in an acrimonious controversy over it with the geologist and physician John Woodward, and this unpleasant experience clearly played a part in his decision to turn his attention to more congenial subjects"- DNB. ESTC T115163.

Johann Jacob Scheuchzer
Legatura in cartonato.

DARRELL, William]
London printed for E. Read. and sold by J. Morphew. 12mo., (8) + 244pp., contemporary panelled calf, some wear to spine at head and foot, but overall a very good copy indeed. The first edition of The Gentleman Instructed> had been published in 1704 (2nd. 1704. 3rd. 1707). Not in Greenough.[A bibliography of the Theophraston character in English.>] With some brilliantly evocative observations on the proper behaviour of girls and young ladies. Thus: 'For beauty being the chief object of a lady's care, she must help nature with art, and polish the work of the Omnipotent with a French wash; she must fence it against the assaults of heats, the excursions of pimples, and the dangerous inroads of the small pox. She must, in fine, expose her life to save her complexion. And then to mould her shape to the Court Standard, what pains does the mother take on the one side, and what a martyrdom does the child undergo on the other? . And now Miss leaves the nursery to pile at the Dancing-School, and to finger the guitar, or the virginals; and when she has master'd a minuet, and an air A-la-mode, when she can practice a brace of grimaces, and wave the fan, Good God! how Mamma titters; she is now fledg'd for the world, and sets out for company. Sprinkled edges. Occasional foxing, more in the section with columns. A shower of minor ink stains in the upper margin on p. 81. Three wormholes, one of which is in the text, on pp. 1-92 and 99-100. Another ten leaves or so with minor but unobtrusive wormhole. Small rusthole in columns 18-19. Bookplate of L. F. Rääf. A very good copy.Warmholtz Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica 1660, the note. The Swedish catholic Johannes Vastovius followed Sigismund to Poland when the latter was dethroned as King of Sweden and became his court chaplain and librarian in Cracow. Vastovius' book on the lives of the Swedish saints was first published in Cologne in 1623. It treats Scandinavian "saints" from bishop Hubertus in the 9th century to the so-called Wiks-Pilt in 1525, the majority of which never were beaitified, and to an even lesser extent canonized. The original edition soon became rare and the work was republished by Erik Benzelius the Younger in a new, annotated edition. Benzelius excluded the papal letters but kept the dedication to Sigismund from the original, and, with his Lutheran readership in mind, supplied it with appropriate reservations. Jean Aymon
Jean Aymon (1661-1720) was a French priest and ecclesiastical writer who, following stints in Grenoble, Rome, and Geneva, converted to Protestantism. In Paris, Aymon secured a position at the royal library under its keeper, Nicolas Clément, and was later accused of the theft of certain manuscripts. His defense, in part, was that they "did not belong to the king’s library; that at least it was not marked with the usual library stamp; and declared that it was put into his hands by some Roman Catholics, who were secretly favourable to the Reformation." In Monumens authentiques, Aymon attempts to counter Antoine Arnauld and the Port-Royalists in the latter’s work, Grande Perpétuité de la Foi, which included an account of the Council of Jerusalem that relied on information in the missing manuscripts (Biographical Dictionary of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, vol. 4, 358). The council is also dealt with in a substantial portion of Monumens authentiques. Laid in is a two-page (early 19th c.?) manuscript discussing Aymon and this and two other works. Hinges cracked and starting but holding firm, head of spine chipped, some overall rubbing, some pages a bit dusty; sound copy overall. From the Mendham … [Click Below for Full Description]

CELLARIUS, Andreas (ca 1596-1665).
Amsterdam:Pieter Schenk and Gerald Valk, 1708. Folio (20 x 12 3/8 inches). Letterpress title-page printed in red and black with woodcut vignette, duplicate letterpress title-page (top edge strengthened with archival tissue). Additional engraved allegorical title-page by F.H. van Hoven, 29 double-page engraved cosmographical charts, all with EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ORIGINAL HAND-COLOUR IN FULL, the borders light grisaille. Contemporary panelled sheep (rebacked to style, one or two surface abrasions, corners strengthened, later endpapers). Second edition, first published in 1660. In this edition the plates are unaltered from the first edition, except for the addition of the imprint "Prostant Amstelaedami apud Petrum Schenk, et Geradum Valk. C.P." In addition to their lavish aesthetic appeal, the 29 double-page celestial charts of Cellarius' "Harmonia macrocosmica", comprise the most sweeping, ambitious project in the history of celestial cartography, one which also illustrates the historical tensions of the time. Cellarius' maps present the evolution of the field of astronomy from ancient times until his own. In his distinctive visual language, Cellarius portrayed the often-conflicting theories that prevailed. In addition to the relatively obscure notions of Tycho Brahe and Schiller, Cellarius's charts track the theories of Ptolemy, dating from the 2nd century AD, and Copernicus's 16th-century challenge to the venerable ancient astronomer. Cellarius' project was not devoid of political motivation. Up to his time of artistic activity, the Netherlands had been the unquestioned cente … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOUTET, Claude
1708. BOUTET, Claude. Frontispiece, [14], 269, [19] pp. Illustrated with 2 leaves of plates. 8vo., bound in contemporary boards. The Hague: Louis and Henry van Dole, 1708. Originally published in Paris 1674, this is one of many later editions, but by far the most important since it contains the first appearance of a colour wheel. The text stresses pigment and colour recipes (most of the book is devoted to them) but there are also sections on drawing, use of the compass, preparation of vellum, etc. Professor Herbert comments on this book, stating "It consists largely of recipes for pigment mixtures and, typically of seventeenth century manuals, these are subordinated to the images the painter creates. One finds advice on pigments for tan architecture, red drapery, blue skies, rather than on the colors themselves." This edition is rare with OCLC listing only 5 copies in America. Hinges worn. Massing 16, listing 26 editions or printings and she states that the "above list is undoubtedly incomplete." Birren Catalogue 92. Kuehni and Schwartz pp. 56-57. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
