“IL ZANGRANDI” -- CARVAGLIO – Moses Baruch (d. 1762)
1708. Hardcover. Good+. [Italy, possibly Piedmont, 17th century]. [181 leaves] (96 x 140mm). A pocket-sized copybook written in a uniform italic script in brown ink, recto only, on laid paper. Each page with double ruled border framing Latin verse lines from De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni (The Life and Exploits of Alexander the Great) by Quintus Curtius Rufus, with Italian translation, and proverbial sayings in Italian on miscellaneous subjects, signed intermittently “Il Zangrandi” or “Gioseppe Zangrandi.” Oblong contemporary sheep over pasteboard; (some slight worming mostly at beginning and end, some minor chips on spine and back cover, otherwise good). Ownership signature of Moses Baruch Carvaglio on the last leaf in Italian, “Io Moise filgiolo (sic) di Jacob di Josef Baruch Carvaglio” under an anecdotal note in his hand about an incident of extreme cold which froze over the lagoon and parts of the Venetian canal in 1708. An interesting 17th-century calligraphic copybook of excerpts from the great Roman history of Alexander the Great and with popular sayings written in Italian and Latin, once owned by important Venetian Jewish coral merchant Moses Baruch Carvaglio. The regal Alexandrian history "De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni" by Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus was much appreciated in Italy during the early modern period. Adaptations for Alexander romances and an incunable tradition was in place from at least the 1470s. The name “Il Zangrandi,” seemingly the writer of this collected verse, could be Virgilio Giangrandi (1589-1630), a Piemontese typographer acti … [Click Below for Full Description]

DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO. SIGLO XVIII.

[Click Below for Full Description]

SCHEUCHZER, J.J.
Londini, H. Clements, 1708. 3 parts (bound in 1 volume). 4to (226 x 175mm). pp. (4), (2), 57, (1); (2), 72; (2), 22, with 1 engraved portrait (of Scheuchzer), 3 engraved frontispieces and 41 (2 folded & 1 partly coloured) engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spine with later rebacking. First edition, which was published at the expense of the Royal Society. It is interesting for its connection with Sir Isaac Newton - the frontispieces to the three parts having been printed at his expense. Johan Jacob Scheuchzer (1672-1733; physician and scientist in Zurich) was the first to travel in Switzerland with mathematical and physical instruments. From 1702 onwards he travelled in the Alps year for year. The results have been published in the above work, the first scientific research papers dealing with natural history, palaeontology, physics and glaciology - a science, which was established by him. The finely engraved plates of the work (all in clear and strong impressions) depict plants, machinery, watercourses, alpine walkways, minerals, etc. An important classic, containing "fascinating details of the mountain journeys that Scheuchzer made all over Switzerland including his thoughts on the movement of glaciers" (Hoover 718). There is a general title to the book and part titles to the three parts.//Ward & Carozzi 1966.

[La Roque, Jean de].
8vo. XII, 312 pp. With folding map and 3 plates. Later binding in contemporary panelled style mit red morocco label to gilt spine. The rare first English edition of this conflation of reports from French expeditions to Arabia during the years 1708-13, first published in French in 1716. "It was with distinct literary skill that La Roque, who himself had visited Syria in 1689, prepared a construed travel report from the notes of various members of the first French expeditions to Arabia and Yemen. The 'Travels to Happy Arabia' well suited the tastes of the time. The well-founded knowledge which La Roque owed to the observations of Captain Merveille and his companions allowed him to provide the first detailed account of Arabic coffee plantations and the coffee trade of the Peninsula" (cf. Schnyder/v. Waldkirch, Wie Europa den Kaffee entdeckte, p. 207f.). The Atabey copy sold at Sotheby's in 2002 (lot 1473) commanded £2,868. - Occasional duststaining, but well-preserved altogether. Provenance: from the library of William Alfred Eddy (1896-1962) with his armorial bookplate ("Crux mihi grata quies" - The Cross is to me a welcome rest) on pastedown. The Sidon-born Eddy, fluent in Arabic and Arabic culture, variously served as U.S. Marine Corps officer, Aramco consultant, U.S. minister to Saudi Arabia, university professor of English Literature and college president, intelligence operative and one of the fathers of the CIA. His Ph.D. in English studies, written on "Gullivers' Travels" (1922), would seem to befit a traveller so able in the art of reversing perspectives. At the histor … [Click Below for Full Description]
