S.n.t., S.l. 1708 - In-8° antico (174x110mm), pp. (14), 272, legatura coeva p. pelle con titolo e fregi ornamentali in oro su dorso a nervetti. Ritratto del Vauban inciso su rame in antiporta, 4 tabelle ripiegate f.t. Qualche brunitura. Antica firma cassata al contropiatto. Buon esemplare. Scrive Schumpeter: This is one of the outstanding performances in the field of public finance, unsurpassed, before or after, in the neatness and cogency of the argument. . Vauban rose fully to those heights, trodden by so few, from which fiscal policy is seen to be a tool of economic therapeutics, the ultimate result of a comprehensive survey of the economic process. With Gladstonian vision he realized that fiscal measures affect the economic organism right to its cells and that the method of raising a given amount of revenue may make all the difference between paralysis and prosperity. Second, he based his conclusions in every detail on numerical fact. His engineer's mind did not guess. It figured out. Purposeful marshalling of all the available data was the essence of his analysis. Nobody ever understood better the true relation between facts and argument. It is this that makes him an economic classic in the eulogistic sense of the word, and a forerunner of modern tendencies (History of Economic Analysis, pp. 197-198). An erudite economic work much in advance of its time, and distinguished both by accuracy of method and breadth of view (Palgrave). Creditable alike to the heart and the head of its illustrious author (McCulloch). Schumpeter, cit. INED, 4397. Kress, 2606. Goldsmiths, 4432. Stourm, 63. Bourgeois André, 6702. Carpenter, Economic bestsellers, X, 14. Cfr.

Notevole

Åkskillige Anmaerkningar oefwer tessa tiders astrologiska phantantiska och enthusiasticka prognostiker spådomar och Prophetier,: beträffande menniskjans wäsende och wandel i gemen; men i synnerhet religions- och statz saker, förnemligast i the nordiska länder .

1708 - 4to (190 x 135mm. ) [24], 148, [4]pp., folding woodcut plate of meteorite at p.74, some contemporary notes on title-page and in margins, modern half calf over marbled paper boards, red edges Linköping: Tryckt Åhr First edition. Magnus Gabriel Block (1669-1722), a doctor of medicine from Harderwijk, and physician to Charles XII of Sweden, had studied at Uppsala and travelled widely in Europe, at one time being found in Florence at the court of Cosimo III. In 1702 he visited England. The work is a sceptical history of prophecy and prognostication, and includes not only such figures as Stoeffler, Lucas Gauricus, Petrus de Alliaco, Cardano and others, but also figures like Nostradamus and even Paracelsus (who was a considerable influence on Block) as well as false prophecies of various types, and there are various quotations from Lucretius in one of the sections, including the famous 'Tantum Religio potuit suadere malorum'). To some extent it is based on the Cambridge divine John Spencer's A Discourse concerning prodigies (1663). On p.2 is the following reference to Jonathan Swift's famous anti-Partridge ?Bickerstaff? Prediction for the Year 1708, giving an insight into its rapid circulation around Europe, although Swift's identity remained hidden: 'London 9 april 1708: 'Inclosed I send you the desired pamphlet published under the name of one Isak Bickerstaff . writ by one M. Escourt a Player, for the diversion of the town . he tells you, that Partridge the almanachmaker should dye the 29 march last, and I can assure you, he is now alive .' Chapters 32, 35 and 36 are also concerned with Bickerstaff affair as an example of false prophecy - a testament to the rapid circulation of the affair around Europe which included German and Dutch translations. This work was translated into German and published by Brumme at Stade (near Hamburg) in 1711, and a note in Latin on the title-page of this copy refers very precisely to this publication: 'germanice translatus a Staderio prodiit Stadii 1711. 8 maj.' Block published a number of works in Latin, Swedish and even one in Spanish. A further note on the title-page refers to William Ramsay's Vindication of astrology whose Lux veritatis or Christian judicial astrology vindicated was published in 1651 Rare. We have located 3 copies: in National Library of Sweden, British Library, Texas (Harry Ransom). Provenance: Macclesfield North Library 57.I.5 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Leguat, Francis (c1637-1735)

R Bonwicke, W Freeman, Tim Goodwin, et al, London 1708 - [8]+xv+248+[24] pages with title in red and black, frontispiece, 4 folding maps, 27 engraved figures (many folding) and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5"") bound in quarter leather with raised spine bands and black label in gilt over marbled boards. First English edition. Francois Leguat was a French Huguenot originating from the Province of Bresse, now part of the department of Ain, who fled to Holland in 1689 after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Marquis Henri du Quesne had published a book giving a glowing description of the island of Réunion. and, with the cooperation of the Dutch East India Company, was planning to establish a colony of French Protestant refugees on the island. Two ships were charted for the purpose and many refugees, including Leguat, were eager to become colonists, but when du Quesne learnt that France had sent a squadron of ships to the island, he abandoned this plan as he wanted to avoid any confrontation with the French. Instead he fitted out a small frigate, L'Hirondelle and instructed the captain, Anthony Valleau, to reconnoitre the Mascarene islands, and to take possession of whatever island was found unoccupied and suitable for colonisation. It appears that the colonists were not informed of this change of plan. On 10 July 1690 Leguat and nine male volunteers boarded L'Hirondelle in Amsterdam, intending to start a new life on the island of Réunion, which they believed had been abandoned by the French. Instead, on 16 May 1691, Leguat and seven companions were marooned on the uninhabited island of Rodrigues. After spending a year on the island the group became homesick and set about constructing a wooden boat to allow them to escape to the island of Mauritius, then under Dutch control. The first attempt failed when they struck Rodrigues' reef; one of the party subsequently died from some illness (possibly brought about by contact with some poisonous reef fauna). They finally left Rodrigues on 21 May 1693[6] and spent a week being carried by the prevailing wind and current in their open boat to Mauritius, a distance of 300 nautical miles (560 km). They were initially well received by the Governor of the island, Rodolfo Diodati, but after an argument over a piece of ambergris that one of the group had brought from Rodrigues, and the discovery by the Governor of their plan to steal a dinghy and escape to Réunion, five of the party were put in prison. Relations were probably strained by the fact that France and Holland were on opposite sides in the Nine Years' War (1688–97). In February 1694 they were transferred to a tiny islet some distance from the shore and kept under abhorrent conditions. One of the group died in attempting to escape; he seems to have reached Mauritius' mainland with a crude float, but apparently perished in the woods too. Finally, in September 1696 the remaining members of the group were transferred to Jakarta and brought before the Dutch Council where they were found to be innocent. Leguat and the two other survivors arrived back in Europe in June 1698. Leguat appears to have settled in England and spent the rest of his life there. Leguat published a description of his adventures in 1708 when he was around 70 years old. The full French title was: Voyage et avantures de François Leguat et de ses compagnons, en deux isles désertes des Indes orientales : avec la relation des choses les plus remarquables qu'ils ont observées dans l'isle Maurice, à Batavia, au Cap de Bon Espérance, dans l'isle de Sainte Hélène, et en d'autres endroits de leur route. Le tout enrichi de cartes et de figures. The French edition was published in both London and Amsterdam. An English translation with the title A new voyage to the East-Indies was published in London and a Dutch edition in Utrecht. Some of the text is very similar to passages found in works by Maximilien Misson, another French Huguenot living in exile. It appears that either Leguat copied Misson or, more likely, Misson assisted Legu [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Opuscula sua botanica.Göttingen, Johann Wilhelm Schmid, 1749. 8vo. With engraved arms on title-page and 5 engraved folding plates. 19th-century paste paper boards.

Blake, p. 196; W. Jardine, The naturalist's library X, p. 26; Stafleu & Cowan 2308. First and only edition of a work comprising a number of botanical essays written by the Swiss naturalist and anatomist Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777). "In 1749 he collected his isolated observations of the genera and species of plants, and on their fructification; and published them in a volume entitled Opuscula botanica" (Jardine). The work consists of six parts. The first deals with Haller's journey through the Alps in 1731, studying its flora. The second is a lecture on the methodological study of botany: "Haller was among the first botanists to realize the importance of herbaria to study variation in plants and he therefore purposely included material from different localities, habitats and developmental phases. Haller also grew many plants in the Alps himself" (Stafleu & Cowan). The following parts deal successively with Haller's botanical research in the "Hercynian Forest" in Germany (1 plate), the use of botany, botanical researches in Switzerland (2 plates), ending with an essay on garlic (2 plates). Some owner's annotations in ink on flyleaf. Title-page and folding plates foxed, leaves only slightly browned with some occasional minor foxing. Binding worn along the extremities. Overall a good copy.

Andreas Cellarius c. 1596, Neuhausen, Ð 1665, Hoorn) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for his Harmonia Macrocosmica of 1660, a major star atlas, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam.Andreas Cellarius, illustration of the Copernican system, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica 1660.He was born in Neuhausen, now a part of Worms, and was educated in Heidelberg. The Protestant Cellarius may have left Heidelberg at the onset of the Thirty years war in 1618 or in 1622 when the city came in Catholic hands. His activities are unclear at this time but based on his later works it is conjectured he spent time in Poland and may have even worked as a military engineer there. In 1625 he married Catharina Elt(e)mans in Amsterdam, where he worked as school master of a Latin School. After a brief stay in The Hague, the family moved to Hoorn. From 1637 until his death he was rector of the Latin School in Hoorn, where Pieter Anthoniszoon Overtwater was conrector.
