The Hague: chez Charles Delo, 1706. 2 volumes, 12mo. (6 x 3 5/8 inches). Titles in red and black. Engraved additional title, 26 plates and maps (including 2 large folding maps, 22 other folding plates or maps). Contemporary calf, covers ruled in blind, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco labels in the second and third compartments, the others with repeat overall tooling in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges, expert repairs to head and foot of spines, contained within a single modern dark red morocco-backed cloth box, "spine" gilt. A very fine set of this early edition of a work "written by a man of more than ordinary learning and intelligence" (Sabin). Scarce edition, the second in this form. Lahontan's earlier works (often viewed as a three volume set), are here issued as a two-volume set by the omission of the extraneous voyages to Portugal and Denmark, and a selection was made from the Dialogues. "Lahontan came to America in 1683 & spent the next few years among the Indians & at the frontier posts of the St. Lawrence & the Lakes. Wintering at Michilimackinac in 1688, Lahontan listened to the tales of the coureurs de bois and heard of the famous Rivière Longue, which Charlevoix called pure fiction [and Howes "about as convincing as the legends of the sea- serpent"]. The popularity of his book was rivalled only by Hennepin's. It is of much value as a clear and fearless picture of Canada and the Canadians of his day. His book has a charm which brings one back to it again . . . for spirit and brightness there is nothing in Canadian literature which approaches it, save some of the earlier letters of Lamothe Cadillac" (Larned). Howes L-25; cf. Sabin 38641.

London: Samuel Smith and Benjamin Walford, 1706 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. First Latin edition. 219 leaves, [14] 1-348, 1-24, [2] 1-24, 21-43 [1] pp. 19 folding engraved plates, some damp spots to first few leaves, wormtrails and holes in margins and just affecting last two or three plates, contemporary vellum, remnants of leather spine label. ---- Babson 137; Wallis 179, Norman 1589. - The first edition of OPTICKS was printed two years earlier in English and without Newton's customary use of editorial assistance. He then employed Samuel Clarke to make a Latin translation with the addition of seven new Queries. At the end of the book are two mathematical treatises, DE QUADRATURA and ENUMERATIO LINEARUM TERTII ORDINIS, which Newton added to establish his priority over Leibniz in the invention of the calculus. Next to the PRINCIPIA, the OPTICKS stands as Newton's greatest work. Much of the a OPTICKS was written thirty years earlier and finally put into print in 1704, just a few months after Newton assumed the chair as President of the Royal Society. It summarized his discoveries and theories concerning light and color, the spectrum of sunlight, the degrees of refraction associated with different colors, the color circle, the invention of the reflecting telescope, the first workable theory of the rainbow, and interference effects in conjunction with Newton's rings. It expounds his corpuscular or emission theory of light..

        Cockatoo (Cacatuidae)

Johann Leonhard Frisch had a diverse career, working as a singer, an interpreter in the German army, a headmaster of a school in Berlin, and finally artist and publisher. After settling in Berlin, Frisch became a member of the Society of Sciences in 1706, under the recommendation of the German mathematician Gottfried Leibnitz. Frisch was interested in natural history and collected specimens to form his own ?Cabinet of Curiousities.? His drawings of birds from this collection would later become the basis for this publication, which included 252 bird illustrations. This Cockatoo, measuring 25" x 19.75", is vibrantly colored with a rich blue watercolor and gouache background, highlighting the pure white and crimson of this decorative cockatoo. Fine lines detail each of the Cockatoo?s feathers and its decorative headpiece, in a realistic manner, as it is perched on a tree branch.

A CHART OF THE SEA COASTS OF NEW NEDER LAND, VIRGINIA, NEW-ENGLAND, AND PENN-SILVANIA, WITH THE CITTY OF PHILADELPHIA, FROM BASTON TO CABO KARRIK. [with insets:] DE STADT PHILADELPHIA OF PENN-SILVANIA [and] DE BAY VAN BOSTON

Amsterdam. [ca. 1706].. Engraved map. Sheet size: 21 1/4 x 24 3/4 inches. Insets of Philadelphia (after Thomas Holme) and Boston Harbor. With wide margins, overall a strong impression. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. A beautifully printed example of the Doncker-van Keulen chart of the American coast from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Boston. An exceptionally fine example of a classic Dutch sea chart of the northeast American coast, with insets of Holme's plan of Philadelphia and Boston Harbor. First issued by the well- known Dutch publisher of maritime works, Hendrick Doncker (1626-99) in 1688, this striking chart of the northeast coast of North America was one of many Doncker plates acquired by Johannes van Keulen (1654-1715), who also took over Doncker's store and made it into a workshop. He reissued this chart with various changes (most notably reworking the cartouche of the original into the inset of Boston Harbor). The chart in its new form appeared around 1706. Hendrick Doncker was one of several Amsterdam chartmakers who played an important role in the brief Dutch ascendancy at sea. Colom, Goos, Lootsman, van Loon, and the van Keulens provided the ever improving charts for the ever increasing merchant fleet, and the ever increasing map reading public. As Koeman notes, Doncker appears to have been one of the more assiduous of the chartmakers, making corrections and improvements and replacing obsolete charts with new ones, when the general tendency was to re-print the existing charts as long as possible. His store sold atlases, pilot guides, navigational instruments and individual charts. Very near the end of his life, he sold most of the business to Johannes van Keulen, who had a shop across the street. With his son Gerard (1678-1724), who had an aptitude for the navigational sciences, they gradually established the predominant house for navigational publications, to the extent that all sea atlases were referred to as "Van Keulens" in later years. The inset of Philadelphia is derived from the Dutch edition of Thomas Holme's famous 1683 plan. Its inclusion and the large inset of Boston Bay reminds us that the Dutch were primarily merchants rather than settlers, interested in profit, not Utopias. BURDEN 644 (note). KOEMAN IV: Keu 113B.         GEDENKWAARDIGE REYS vanden Engelschen Capitain Robert Coverte, Eerst ter Zee; dog by Cambaye een ellendige Shipbreuck geleende hebbende, te Lande door Indostan, of Opper-Indien, Persien, Arabien, Asiatisch Turckyen, &c. met seer beswaarlijke

Leiden, Pieter Vander Aa, 1706.. omswervingen. Van Anno 1607, tot in 't Jaar 1611. Nu aldereerst uyt 't Engelsch vertaald. Text in Dutch or Flemish, translated from the English, 8vo, 180 x 115 mm, 7 x 4½ inches, vignette on title page, folding map of middle east and India, 2 folding engraved plates, printed in black letter, pages (4), 61, (5), bound in modern half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt lettered morocco label to spine, new endpapers. Occasional light browning to pages, otherwise a very good clean tight copy. There is very little information about Robert Coverte. Although styled on the title page as Captain Robert Covert, it seems he was steward on the 'Ascension' which sailed from Plymouth in 1607. The vessel ran aground going into Surat, the primary port of the Moghul Empire, but the crew escaped ashore in boats. An English merchant introduced them to the court of the Great Mogul at Agra arriving in December 1609. Coverte with his companions started out for home from Agra at the beginning of 1610 choosing to travel overland through Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad. They reached Aleppo in December 1610 and then took a ship back to England arriving in April 1611. Coverte's account of his travels was first published in London in 1612 and again in 1614. First edition, published the year of Evelyn's death. Though this is styled as the fourth edition of Sylva (1st ed., 1664), in fact this volume gathers together for the first time all Evelyn's various published treatises arising from the composition of the Elysium Britannicum, an encyclopaedic history of gardens and gardening practices that occupied Evelyn for most of his life. Evelyn's enthusiasm for horticulture in particular, both in his own garden at Sayes Court and in his correspondence and publications, translated continental ideas into England and laid the groundwork for the English landscape garden of the 18th century.

Sthlm, O. Enaeus, 1706. 8:o. (4),92 s.
