Gallico Latina versione donata illustrata que M. Gregorio Michaelis Praeposito Regio Flensburgensi. Praefixa est huic Editioni novae Prefatio Jo. Alberti Fabricii, D. [junto a:] Notae in Jacobi Gaffarelli curiositates.

1706-1676. . 1706 - Impreso por Benjamin Schiller/Godfried Schultz (apud Gothofredum Schultzen). Hamburgo, Alemania. . 1 Vol. . Frontispicio+portada+62 H.+290 pp.+9 H.+498 pp.+25 H. pp. Octavo. Pergamino de época. . Buen estado. .

William Penn to James Logan, Future President of Council of Pennsylvania, Mayor of Philadelphia, Chief Justice of PA Supreme Court, and Founder of the Library Company

1706 - Autograph Letter Signed to James Logan. n.p. [London?], June 27, 1706. 1 p., 6 1/4 x 7 1/2 in. bifolium with integral address leaf with panel in Penn's hand. Penn, writing from England, asks his trusted secretary in Philadelphia to assist Thomas Haywood regarding his lands and debts. Penn was in the midst of his own ongoing dispute about ownership of all of Pennsylvania, which had originated with the crowning of William and Mary in 1688, and trumped-up charges of treason due to Penn's championing of religious freedom, which led to an opportunity for Penn's manager to, in effect, embezzle the entire colony from him. (See below for more details). A month after Penn wrote this letter, Logan advises Penn to avoid ruin by selling the government "for a valuable consideration" as the only "probable method of clearing thy debts." Penn did not heed Logan's advice, and the court placed Penn in debtor's prison from January 1707 to August 1708. Penn eventually settled the Ford claim with a payment of £7,600, and then began negotiations to sell the colony to the Crown. Unfortunately, a series of strokes from 1711 to 1713 interrupted his negotiations, and he died in poverty. His family (after its own dispute between step-sons) retained ownership of the colony of Pennsylvania until the American Revolution. Complete Transcript 27 4 1706.[1][James] Logan /with my love, desireing thy utmost care for my Concerns, & thy comfort into the bargain, shew the bearer Thomas Haywood, wt Just Kindness thou canst, be it abt Land, or debts due to him in ye country. I have hinted to Thee wt I mean, in my little letter aforesd. Expect an other by this opertunity to Thine of ye 12 10th[2] & 29 of ye 11m[3] more distinctly. So with my love to all our Frds, farewell. Thy assured Frd. Wm. Penn [Address leaf panel, also in Penn's hand:]For James Logan, Secrety of Pennsylvania, &c. / Philadelphia / per T. Haywood[Endorsement:] William Penns Letter to his Seretary in Pennsylvania to assist Tho Hayward about Land and debts he having both ? in EnglandHistorical BackgroundPenn had founded his colony in 1681 on principles of democracy and religious freedom, and made his first visit to America in 1682, and returned to England in 1685 to aid his oppressed fellow Quakers there. He convinced King James II to allow Quakers to practice their religion in England as well as in America, but the King was soon exiled and William and Mary ascended to the throne in 1688. With Penn continuing to speak out against religious persecution, in 1690, Penn was imprisoned in the Tower of London for two weeks. In 1692 Penn was charged with treason, and Pennsylvania was taken away from him. Before going into hiding, Penn attempted to protect the colony and his interest in it by signing a deed (today it would be a considered a power of attorney - consistent with the practice of the time it was written as a sale deed, with the unwritten understanding that it was only meant to go into effect in the event of the death or disability of the transferor) to his friend and fellow-Quaker Philip Ford for the "entire province and territories" of Pennsylvania.[4] The Quakers petitioned King William for a fair trial, and eventually Penn was cleared of all charges, with his ownership restored by the king in 1694.During William Penn's second visit to the colony of Pennsylvania from 1699 to 1701, he brought James Logan with him to serve as the secretary of the colony. But Penn apparently did not re-claim his deed from Philip Ford, who died in 1702. Ford's widow soon began a lawsuit against Penn, arguing that her husband had bought Pennsylvania from Penn, and that Penn's three-year lease had expired without Penn having paid rent; she was determined to take the colony. In October 1705, Logan informed Penn of the legal troubles, and noted that the colony's Assembly resolved "to do all in their power for thine and the country's good, and will endeavour to put things in the .

Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni. - From Coronelli's Teatro della Guerra - A very rare map taken from Coronelli’s "Teatro della Guerra diviso in XXXXVIII parti" published in Venice (though the front page says Naples) between 1706 and 1709. The collection contains hundreds of views, geographic maps and sea charts depicting the entire world. Ermanno Armao, who studied Coronelli’s production, wrote "it is not easy to determine how many and which are the volumes that belong to the collection ". The map is made using the plate of the Western Hemispher map by Coronelli, published in his Atlante Veneto (1690). The decorative border are cut and the map is folded. A very fine map of the Western Hemisphere including the discoveries made by Abel Tasman in Australia and an early image of the New Zealand coastline, plus California as an Island. The treatment of the Northeastern Coast of Asia and Japan are also quite unusual, including a representation of Terra di Iesso, the mythical land bridge which was frequently shown to extend from Asia to Alaska, with only the Straits of Anian separating the two continents. California is featured as an island on the second Sanson model, with only C. Blanco named. To the north is Stretto d'Anian, northwest is Terra di Iesso, ("Scoperta dagli Holland, l'Anno 1643"), and farther west is Giaponi. The American west is dominated by Nuovo Mexico, in which live the Apaches, seemingly the only Indian tribe named. In the Pacific, portions of New Zealand, Van Diemens land, Carpentaria, and Nuova Guinea are shown. Shirley extolls the two world sheets as "a worthwhile addition to any collection. They combine the most up-to-date cartographical information with elegant engraving and retained accompanying decoration." Leighly 89; McLaughlin 105; Shirley 548. Dimensioni 430 425mm

America Accurate in Imperia, Regna, Staus & Populos Divisia, ad Usum Ludovici XV Galliarum Regis. Carte d'Amerique.

Americas: Amsterdam. Covens et Mortier c1741. Copper engraved map of of the Americas from Covens & Mortier's " Nieuwe Atlas, Inhoudennde vier Gedeeltens der Waereld.. " Original full wash colour; verso blank. Black and white strap work title cartouche [as issued]."Avertisement" on black & white drape to lower right corner The map after Guillaume De l'Isle's shows the whole continent, with part of Europe and Africa to the East. The map includes a Prime Meridian declared by Louis XIII and Pope Alexander VI's Line of Demarcation that divided the world (outside of Europe) between Portugal and Spain. Includes detailed information about discoveries and explorations particularly around the Magellan strait and the discovery of the Falkland islands in 1706. Dark impression; bright full wash colour; printed on heavy paper, short centre fold split at lower margin with old repair to verso and lower margin; old red crayon numbers to verso. Covens & Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. The French cartographer Guillaume de l'Isle (1675−1726) was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences when he was 27 years old and subsequently became the first person to receive the title Premier Géographe du Roi (principal geographer to the king). At the time de l'Isle was engaged in cartographic research, the prestige of a cartographer and the authority of his maps were gauged by the veracity of the cartographer's sources, i.e., the explorers and travelers who reported details of their travels to geographers and cartographers in Europe. Many of de l'Isle's maps were reissued by the publishing house of Cornelis Mortier and Johannes Coven in Amsterdam in their Atlas Nouveau, which was published in multiple editions, the earliest of which dates to 1730.         Some Fruits of Solitude, in Reflections and Maxims Relating to the Conduct of Human Life.

1706, 1702., London: 1706 - 2 volumes in one, 12mo, contemporary calf, 1, [[14], 158, [6], 1, [6], 117 pp. Calf with moderate wear, and somewhat weak hinges, lacks front endpapers, moderate dampstaining in the second book, index leaf misbound, first page after volume one repaired with some loss of text, final leaf defective with loss of text at the top of the page, early owner's inscription on rear face papers; still a very decent copy. William Penn (1644-1718) was born in London, and in 1681 would make history by founding the colony of Pennsylvania. He started this enterprise with good intentions and considerable resources, and even managed to cultivate good relations with Native Americana in the area. However, by 1685 the colony became a financial failure for Penn, and his vision for an "ideal society" ended. Penn, a Quaker, had his share of squabbles with other religious leaders, but he was fortunate enough to have the means to publish his opinions. The present title was a popular work, and published in several editions. It contains a lot of useful information that presents Penn's views on life. He tells us that diet is important to a balanced life and recommends "eat therefore to live, and do not live to eat." He also tells us that "strong liquors" are not a bad thing if used in moderation. He also felt having good friends was very important, and advises a person to choose them like a wife, "till death separate you." ANB.

Folio (measures 9 by 13-1/2 inches), early 19th-century full dark brown tree calf neatly rebacked with original gilt-decorated spine panels laid down, raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges; pp. (16), 604, (10). $2600.1706 edition, the last folio edition of LockeÂ’s remarkable study of the nature of knowledge and the last with alterations by Locke. A handsome, wide-margined copy.""Locke was the first to take up the challenge of Bacon and to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe"" (PMM 164). Locke's conclusion—that while man can never attain a perfect and universal understanding of the world, he can gain sufficient knowledge to secure his own well being—became a touchstone for the Age of Enlightenment. With the Essay Locke initiated the criticism of human knowledge and furthered the discourse on free inquiry. ""The Essay Concerning Humane UnderstandingÂ… was the first attempt on a great scale, and in the Baconian spirit, to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge"" (Fraser). A notable inclusion in this edition is Locke's Letter to Bishop Edward Stillingfleet, his Reply, and his second Reply, with brief quotations from the bishop. Yolton 65. See PMM 164. Vanderlip, Sr., who rose to prominence around the turn of the last century as the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during the McKinley administration and later helped lay the groundwork for the Federal Reserve Act; he also ""led National City Bank to become the nation's preeminent financial institution"" (ANB).         Catalogus centuriae librorum rarissimorum manuscript. & partim impressorum, Arabicorum, Persicorum, Turcicorum, Graecorum, Latinorum, &c.

Uppsala, Sparvenfeld, 1706. - Small 4to. (6), 74 pp. With a woodcut garland of fruits, leaves and nuts on the title-page, 1 woodcut headpiece and 1 woodcut decorated initial. Set in roman, italic, Arabic and Greek type. Later paper wrapper. Catalogue of the collection of 126 Persian, Arabian, Turkish, Greek, Latin and other books and manuscripts donated to the Library of the University of Uppsala by the diplomat Johan Gabriel Sparwenfeld (1655-1727). It was compiled by the Swedish scholars Eric Benzelius the younger (1670-1756) and Olaus Celsius the elder (1675-1743). The main series of manuscripts, described in great detail, includes 41 in Arabic, Persian and Turkish, 8 in Greek (one dating back to the eighth century) and 12 in Latin and modern European languages. These are followed by 42 printed books including 2 in Chinese, several in Arabic, the 1581 Ostrog Bible and several other exotic languages, including Irish (set in Anglo- Saxon type). A few more manuscripts (mostly Arabic) are added at the end, plus an unnumbered geographic manuscript in Chinese (3 volumes). This is the earliest catalogue of the Uppsala University Library's collections. The Arabic, Persian and Turkish titles are set in a large Arabic type cut for the physician and orientalist Peter Kirsten by the Swedish punchcutter Peter von Selow (who served his apprenticeship under Tycho Brahe) and first used at Breslau in 1608. Werner, printer to the university at Uppsala since 1701, seems to have been the first Swedish printer to use types by Nicolaus Kis, two of his italics and one roman appearing in the present book, though not the roman used for the main text. After finishing his studies at Uppsala, Sparwenfeld travelled throughout Europe and accompanied the Swedish ambassador to Moscow, where he took an interest in Slavonic languages. On his travels he collected many precious books and manuscripts. In 1687 he returned to Stockholm, where he carried out a study of manuscripts from the ancient Goths. He travelled to Holland, France and Spain, dealing with the Blaeu printing office and mediating in the production of Georgian type cut by Nicolaus Kis for the exiled King of Georgia. In 1691 he travelled to Egypt, Syria and Tunis. Though a Protestant, he presented the manuscript of his Slavonic lexicon to Pope Innocent XII, who granted him access to the Vatican library, a rare honour for a Protestant. He returned to Sweden in 1694. He continued to correspond with scholars throughout Europe even after he retired to his estate 1712. He wrote and spoke 14 languages. - In very good condition, with only occasional very slight foxing, wholly untrimmed, preserving the deckles and point holes and with the bolts unopened. A remarkable catalogue of an extraordinary library, especially rich in Arabic manuscripts. Almqvist, Sveriges bibliogr. litteratur 2838. Smitskamp 113 (note).

Histoire de L'Abbaye Royale de Saint-Denys

1706. First Edition . FÉLIBIEN, Michel. Histoire de L’Abbaye Royale de Saint-Denys en France. Paris: Frederic Leonard, 1706. Thick folio (10-1/2 by 15-1/2 inches), contemporary full brown mottled calf rebacked with the original gilt-decorated spine laid down, raised bands. $3500.First edition of this authoritative description and pictorial inventory of the Cathedral of Saint-Denis, with engraved frontispiece by De Poilly, two double-page plans (the town of Saint-Denis and the Cathedral), 12 engraved plates (ten double-page) of precious objects and tombs, and 12 combinations of historiated headpiece and initial letter. The Cathedral of Saint-Denis is considered an architectural landmark, as it was the first major structure designed and built in the Gothic style. “Both stylistically and structurally it heralded the change from Romanesque architecture to Gothic architecture. Before the term ‘Gothic’ came into common use, it was known as the ‘French Style” (Opus Francigenum). Like most Medieval cathedrals, Saint-Denis held many treasures— reliquaries and liturgical vessels made of precious materials, as well as the “regalia” (objects used in the coronation of French Kings). One of the major sources of information about the rich collection in the treasury of Saint-Denis is this work by Dom Michel Félibien, containing both descriptions and a visual inventory of these objects, many of which were dispersed or destroyed during the French Revolution. Félibien’s illustrations provide critical documentation as to these original holdings, especially the contents of the four armoires in which the treasure was displayed throughout the 18th century. The earliest account of Saint-Denis is an anonymous manuscript in the Bibliothéque Nationale, entitled Descriptio qualiter Karlus Magnus. It was composed and written at Saint-Denis before 1100 and probably even before the First Crusade. Félibien has included this text along with his own elaborate description of the church, together with an account of the privileges and lives of its abbots and benefactors. “So high a reputation did this work gain for its author as a learned, painstaking and faithful historian, that the merchants of Paris… applied to Dom Félibien to write a history of Paris, L’Histoire de la Ville de Paris, published posthumously in 1755” (Charles Knight). Text in French. Brunet II, 1203. Graesse II, 561. Plates fine, only scattered foxing to fore-edge margins of text. A nearly fine copy.

        Epitome chronologico, genealogico, & historico

Lisbon: Na Officina de Antonio Pedrozo Galram, 1706. [16]+555 pages. Octavo (8" x 6") bound in full leather with raised bands with red labels and gilt lettering to spine. (Palau 32887) First edition.Antonio Maria Bonucci was a Jusuit priest and Antonio Vieira's secretary for the last ten years of his life. Since Bonucci was Vieira's secretary until his, Vieira's, death in 1697 and was well aware of the content of Vieira's work, it is surprising that he wrote and managed to get a book published in 1706 in which eh seemingly follows some of Vieira's ideas regarding the succession of time. When one reads the first "book" of this work, they have the impression that the content and structure are very much similar to some passages of Vieira's Clavis Prophetarum. A study of this book will provide further light on Vieira's interpretation of the succession of empires, particularly when analyzing his chapter on "how the time of the Antichrist should be understood in the Fifth empire, while Christ's empire would thus be counted as the sixth. Antonio Vieira was a Portuguese Jesuit philosopher and writer, the "prince" of Catholic pulpit-orators of his time. He accompanied his parents to the colony of Brazil, where his father had been posted as a registrar. He received his education at the Jesuit college at Bahia. In 1635 he entered the priesthood. He distinguished himself as an orator. He was one of the reformers during the inquisition and his enemies had him exiled to Coimbra. this work is a kind of universal history, one of its interest is that the dedication was written in Bahia.Condition:Recased with renewed spine and labels and end papers, corners rubbed, leather boards, scuffed and rubbed, early signature to title, minor dampstaining else a very good copy.

Optice; sive de reflexionibus, refractionibus, inflexionibus & coloribus lucis libri tres.

London: Samuel Smith and Benjamin Walford, 1706. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. First Latin edition. 219 leaves, [14] 1-348, 1-24, [2] 1-24, 21-43 [1] pp. 19 folding engraved plates, some damp spots to first few leaves, wormtrails and holes in margins and just affecting last two or three plates, contemporary vellum, remnants of leather spine label. ----Babson 137; Wallis 179, Norman 1589. - The first edition of OPTICKS was printed two years earlier in English and without Newton's customary use of editorial assistance. He then employed Samuel Clarke to make a Latin translation with the addition of seven new Queries. At the end of the book are two mathematical treatises, DE QUADRATURA and ENUMERATIO LINEARUM TERTII ORDINIS, which Newton added to establish his priority over Leibniz in the invention of the calculus. Next to the PRINCIPIA, the OPTICKS stands as Newton's greatest work. Much of the a OPTICKS was written thirty years earlier and finally put into print in 1704, just a few months after Newton assumed the chair as President of the Royal Society. It summarized his discoveries and theories concerning light and color, the spectrum of sunlight, the degrees of refraction associated with different colors, the color circle, the invention of the reflecting telescope, the first workable theory of the rainbow, and interference effects in conjunction with Newton's rings.
