Dionysii Petavii Aurelianensis, e Societate Jesu, Opus de doctrina temporum...Nova editione notis & emendationibus quamplurimis, quas manu sua codici adscripserat Dionysius Petavius. Cum praefatione et dissertatione de LXX. Hebdomadibus Joannis Harduini

Antwerpiæ: Georgium Gallet, 1705. Three volumes, folio, pp. [48], 568 (i.e. 570 - pp. 471-72 repeated in the pagination), [8]; [12], 536; [8], 364; title pages printed in red and black, engraved device on title pages of volume I and II, woodcut device on title of volume III, engraved portrait frontispiece, woodcut head- and tailpieces, ornaments, and initials, woodcut diagrams (largely astronomical and mostly in the first volume), tables throughout; occasional mild dampstains largely confined to the fore- and bottom margins, tear in the fore-margin of 2L1 in volume I entering text (no loss), paper flaw in 2T4 in volume II just touching text, tears in the bottom margin of 2Y3 and 2Y4 in volume III; a pretty nice copy in contemporary full calf neatly rebacked to style, red and black labels lettered in gilt on spines, sprinkled edges and the fore-edges decorated with a faint picket-fence design. Volume I is apparently the second issue. Pétau (1583-1652), also known as Dionysius Petavius, was a French Jesuit theologian, and one of the most brilliant scholars in a learned age. In the words of my friend and colleague, Ed Glaser: "A staggering work on sidereal astronomy and the calculations of the calendar. First published in far less detailed fashion in 1627, the first part deals with the calendars of the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Macedonians, Persians, Hebrews, and others. The second part examines different historical eras, celebrated eclipses, a chronology of the reigns of the Caesars, and the birth of Christ. The Uranologian contains Greek astronomical and chronological texts with Latin translations. Included are the commentaries of Geminus, Achillis Tatios, and Hipparchus on Aratus; Eratosthenes' life of Aratus; Ptolemy on appearances, Theodore of Gaza on the months, and the Computuses of Maximus, Isaac of Argyros and St. Andrew of Crete. Also included is an elaborate examination of classical conceptions and calculations of time. The work is considered to have surpassed Scaliger's earlier landmark on the subject, De Emendatione Temporum, of 1537. The work also contains his Epistolarum, his correspondence with many of the leading thinkers in Europe at the time." Ebert 16328: "The best edition." The third volume contains besides the Uranologion several other pieces of Petavius which were first added to this edition. Brunet IV, 528.

1705. Copper engraving, mm 232x330. Attractive small map covering the Gulf of Mexico through Central America also including parts of Cuba and Jamaica. It extends through Mexico to show the southern tip of Baja California. This is an early map to show the correct location of the Mississippi River delta gleaned from the expeditions of La Salle and Iberville. Almost all prior maps had the mouth further west into present - day Texas. The Rio Grande (Rio Bravo ou del Nord) is also shown flowing correctly into the Gulf of Mexico rather than into the Gulf of California. Two French forts are located: LaSalle's Fort St. Louis in Texas (Fortbati en 1685) and another near present - day New Orleans. One of the prominent features in northern Mexico is Les Fameuses Mines de Ste. Barbe, the legendary Santa Barbara mines of the Chihuahua - Durango region. The cartouche features two native figures. Nicolas de Fer (1646 - 1720) was a leading frech engraver and cartographer, official geographer of the king of France. Good condition.

        Genoa

Marvellous bird - eye - view of the city, engraved by Bastian Stoopendal, from the second edition of Pierre Mortier's Nouveu Theatre de L'Italie, printed in Amsterdam in 1724 by Alberts. The view has been realized on two plates. Copperplate, two sheets joined vertically. Amsterdam Amsterdam Bibliografia: Cremonini pp. 83 - 90. 1005 445

Klaudius Civilis, in zestien zangen, ... Amsterdam, Pieter Meijer, 1774. Large 4to. With engraved frontispiece by Reinier Vinkeles, included both uncoloured and beautifully hand-coloured and highlighted with gold. Near contemporary half calf (ca. 1800), richly gold-tooled spine.

      E. de La Fontaine Verwey, Illustr. letterk. werken XVIIIe eeuw, p. 175; W.A.P. Smit, Kalliope in de Nederl., pp. 436, 836. First and only edition of a neoclassical epic poem in rhymed Dutch verse about Claudius Civilis (also known as Julius Civilis), leader of the 69/70 AD Batavian rebellion against the authority of classical Rome. What little is known of the real events comes from Tacitus's Historiae , but in the Dutch Republic the story was revived as a heroic story of the ancient Dutch bravely standing up against the unfair authority of the powerful Roman Empire. The story remained in vogue throughout the 18th-century and the Dutch poet Frans van Steenwijk (1705-1788) gave it its most extensive treatment in the present work. The present copy is of special interest for its beautiful engraved frontispiece by Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816). It appears in this copy both uncoloured, so that one can see every detail of the engraving, and luxuriously hand-coloured and highlighted with gold. With bookplate. In very good condition and with very generous margins. With the top of the spine slightly damaged, the front hinge cracked and a few scuff marks, but the binding remains generally good.

Nearly every separately published edition is known only from a single copy, and we have located no other copy of the present edition.Slightly trimmed at the foot, but further wholly untrimmed and with all deckles intact.

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in perfette condizioni. Norimberga Nurnberg L. Dufour - A. After losing his sight to glaucoma, he worked primarily from touch, as depicted in the famous portrait in the present volume. Many of the book?s exquisite plates are believed to have been engraved after drawings by the great scientific illustrator, Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717).

        A mathematical compendium;

12mo., (24) 120 (178)pp., with 9 engraved plates (some on text leaves, one folding, others free-standing), contemporary panelled calf with raised bands, unlettered, slightly shaken but a fine copy. With the early signatures of William Dale and James Gilbert, and with old ms notes in ink on endpapers and a final blank leaf. A popular English schoolbook first published in 1674 (other editions in 1681, 1690, 1693 and 1695). Sir Jonas Moore (1617-1679), mathematician, patron of astronomy, and surveyor, enjoyed an early career in London as a mathematics teacher where he earned a glowing tribute from no less than William Oughtred and acquired several well-connected pupils. He later successfully worked for the fifth Earl of Bedford as surveyor to the fen drainage company for several years in the 1650s. His 16-sheet Mapp of the Great Levell of the Fens (1658) was a tour de force. His eventual knighthood was probably largely earned by holding for ten years the important post of Surveyor-General of the Royal Ordnance (1669-1679), although he was at the same time closely involved with the management of the Royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital.

Othello, the Moor of Venice.

London: for R. Wellington,, 1705. A Tragedy. As it hath been divers times Acted at the Globe, and at the Black-Friers: And now at the Theatre Royal, by Her Majesties Servants. Quarto (216 × 170 mm). 19th-century marbled boards, roan tips, rebacked with tan calf, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Corners rubbed and darkened, title-page lightly soiled with skilful repair to verso, mild scattered spotting, light browning to sigs. C to I. A good copy. Final quarto edition, the seventh overall, this copy from the collection of American Shakespeare scholar Joseph Parker Norris (1847-1916), with his engraved armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Richard Wellington took over Bentley's copyrights in 1697. All quarto editions of Othello from the third onward largely followed the text of the second, published by Richard Hawkins in 1630; Jaggard records all quartos from the fourth onward as edited by John Dryden, though such textual differences as there are appear to be misprints (Rosenberg, The Masks of Othello, p. 265). Othello's appearance in quarto format preceded its publication in the First Folio (1623) by a year. "F [the First Folio] contains approximately 160 lines that are absent from Q [the first quarto edition], including a number of extended passages and some well-known set-pieces, while Q has generally fuller and more elaborate stage directions, and includes a scattering of lines and phrases missing from F Â… There has been broad agreement among editors and textual critics that both Q and F derive from a manuscript (or separate manuscripts) in Shakespeare's own hand Â… Thus each has claims to authority Â… The Second Quarto of 1630 (Q2) Â… also demands serious attention, since it offers a carefully corrected version of Q, produced by an editor who made extensive use of F" (Michael Neill's appendix to the Oxford Edition, p. 405). Produced as they were for theatre use, quarto editions of Shakespeare are notably uncommon survivals,

        Poeta Lyricus. 'Sacred Poems'

Cambridge: Cambridge (Cantabrigiae) Academic Press, 1705., 1705. LORD BYRON'S copy. First edition edited by Joshua Barnes (a professor of Greek at Cambridge University). Illustrated with 3 copper engraved folding portraits (the author, the editor, and his patron John Chruchill, Duke of Marlborough). 12mo. Bound in full period calf boards ruled in blind, later respine to style. Inscribed by Leigh Hunt to Byron on flyleaf with inscription in latin regarding Byron's imminent journey to Italy, dated beginning of April 1816, with 7pp of Leigh Hunt's translations of selected odes in holograph. Housed in a full leather custom-made slip-case. The text is a study of the life and work of the Greek lyric poet Anacreon (c.582-c.485BC) and includes the drinking songs and hymns for which he was renowned. Minor edgewear, scuffing. Very good indeed, repair to front inner hinge. Internally clean, inscriptions and notes to prelims and final leaf. In 1813, as editor of The Examiner newspaper, poet and critic Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) served a two-year prison sentence for a (substantially factual) published attack on The Prince Regent; subsequent outcry and sympathy mean Hunt was afforded an opulent and luxurious cell with frequent visitors including his friend the flamboyant romantic Lord Byron. Both shared an interest in journals and quarterlies although efforts to launch a joint project were not fruitful and their friendship suffered. Later, an impoverished Hunt became increasingly dependent on Byron, who did not relish the idea of supporting the troublesome essayist; Hunt in return published 'Lord Byron and some of his Contemporaries' (1825) which questioned the idealized portraits of Byron.

Parigi, 1705 - Copper engraving, mm 232x330. Almost all prior maps had the mouth further west into present-day Texas. The Rio Grande (Rio Bravo ou del Nord) is also shown flowing correctly into the Gulf of Mexico rather than into the Gulf of California. Two French forts are located: LaSalle's Fort St. Louis in Texas (Fortbati en 1685) and another near present-day New Orleans. One of the prominent features in northern Mexico is Les Fameuses Mines de Ste. Barbe, the legendary Santa Barbara mines of the Chihuahua-Durango region. The cartouche features two native figures. Nicolas de Fer (1646-1720) was a leading frech engraver and cartographer, official geographer of the king of France. Good condition.
