ARND, Carl. 1673-1721
Rostock and Leipzig: for J. H. Rusworm, 1706. Contemporary speckled boards (worn, corners and spine defective), edges sprinkled red. Two First Editions, the son's annotated bibliography of writings on political science and the father's Mirror of Princes.  Carl Arnd's (1673-1721) sweep of some five hundred Protestant and Catholic 16th- and 17th-century works encompasses emblems, law, geography, statecraft, biography, ethics, genealogy, philosophy, economics, history and science. We find here advisers to Elizabeth I, the Holy Roman Emperors and the Kings of France, Sweden and Spain and many German Princes.  His father, librarian, theologian, court counselor and historian, Josua Arnd (1626-87), composed this case study of Joab (King David's too loyal general and instrument for the abuse of power) in 1653 for the young Gustavus Adolphus of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, who had just turned twenty and was about to become Duke. Carl saw the unpublished manuscript into print. In good condition (small spot on one leaf). ¶Besterman, World Bibliography of Bibliographies 4938.

Printed by Charles Bill, and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, London. 1706 Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments. Folio, bound in full contemporary morocco decorated with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, elaborate gilt ruling and decorations to the panels with central motif displaying the arms of Westminster Abbey with the Tudor arms between Tudor Roses above the attributed arms of Edward the Confessor, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, pictorial engraved title page. In near fine condition, rebacked. A superior and highly desirable example. The Book of Common Prayer was created out of Thomas Cranmer's desire for a liturgical text that all of Europe's Protestant, English-speaking churches could agree on. Its magisterial liturgical language is, "as a source of spiritual inspiration for most Englishmen second only to the Bible" (PMM 75). The Book of Common Prayer was first issued in 1549 during the reign of Edward VI and revised through the reign of Mary I, James II, and ending significantly in 1832. COVERTE, Robert.
Leiden Pieter Vander Aa, 1706. Van Anno 1607, tot in 't Jaar 1611. Nu aldereerst uyt 't Engelsch vertaald. FIRST DUTCH EDITION, 1706. Text in Dutch or Flemish, translated from the English, 8vo, approximately 180 x 115 mm, 7 x 4½ inches, vignette on title page, folding map of middle east and India, 2 folding engraved plates, printed in black letter, pages: [4], 1-61, [5], bound in modern half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt lettered morocco label to spine, new endpapers. Occasional light browning to pages, otherwise a very good clean tight copy. There is very little information about Robert Coverte. Although styled on the title page as Captain Robert Covert, it seems he was steward on the 'Ascension' which sailed from Plymouth in 1607. The vessel ran aground going into Surat, the primary port of the Moghul Empire, but the crew escaped ashore in boats. An English merchant introduced them to the court of the Great Mogul at Agra arriving in December 1609. Coverte with his companions started out for home from Agra at the beginning of 1610 choosing to travel overland through Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad. They reached Aleppo in December 1610 and then took a ship back to England arriving in April 1611. Coverte's account of his travels was first published in London in 1612 and again in 1614. After Keith was disowned by the Quakers and read out of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, he moved to England where, in 1700, he was ordained to the Anglican Church. In 1702 he returned to America as an S.P.G. missionary. He landed in Boston in June 1702, and for the next two years he traveled from New England south to Currituck, in present-day North Carolina, largely trying to win over the Quakers and the Congregationalists by preaching, arguing, and writing. He mentions many names of local individuals--those with whom he stayed or preached or won over. An important record of religious life in Colonial America by a significant figure of the period. Johann Nicolai was a 17th-century antiquities scholar who taught at the University of Tubingen. He studied a wide variety of topics, but none were more important than his contributions to Hebrew and Jewish tradition. In his book 'De Sepulchris Hebraeorum', Nicolai expertly describes the customs and manners of Jewish burial and funeral rites.
