Rondinini, Filippo
1706. Two parts in one volume, xxxii, 428 pp. volume in Latin on St. Clement of Rome (Pope Clement I) and the medieval Basilica di San Clemente in Rome, including information on the life of the saint, a controversy surrounding the whereabouts of his remains, and the history and architecture of the basilica, indices. Illustrated with four engraved folding plates in Part II, including the façade of the basilica, interior view, and floor plan. Light browning throughout, some scattered foxing, two minor ink inscriptions of ownership to front pastedown endpaper and final printed page. 4to. Original vellum, some very minor soiling and wear to extremities. Rome (Franciscus Gonzaga) 1706. Rossetti 8895, Cicognara 3858, Olschki 17975, Ranghiasci 608. The Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano was originally built in the 4th century, converted from the home of a Roman nobleman which had briefly served as a church in the 1st century, itself built on Roman ruins destroyed in the Great Fire of 64 AD. The present basilica was built around the year 1100, and is remarkable for the survival of its Early Medieval wall paintings, its marble schola cantorum, and its extensive mosaic decoration. Pope Clement XI ordered extensive restorations be completed on the church shortly after Rondinini's volume was published; it is possible that this work helped draw the Pope's attention to the importance of the structure. According to Rossetti's bibliography, three titles in total were written by Rondinini and published in a single volume by Gonzaga in 1706-1707. This volume is the first listed in his entr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni." " - From Coronelli's Teatro della Guerra - A very rare map taken from Coronelli's ""Teatro della Guerra diviso in XXXXVIII parti"" published in Venice (though the front page says Naples) between 1706 and 1709. The collection contains hundreds of views, geographic maps and sea charts depicting the entire world. Ermanno Armao, who studied Coronelli's production, wrote ""it is not easy to determine how many and which are the volumes that belong to the collection "". The map is made using the plate of the Western Hemispher map by Coronelli, published in his Atlante Veneto (1690). The decorative border are cut and the map is folded. A very fine map of the Western Hemisphere including the discoveries made by Abel Tasman in Australia and an early image of the New Zealand coastline, plus California as an Island. Following a published criticism of Catholic doctrine, he was incorporated at Cambridge 1687, and took a living in Peterborough a year later. The Reflections are generally attributed to Gilbert; and comprise a critical response to William Fleetwood's works on Miracles. In the Reflections, Gilbert asserts that Fleetwood's thinking is dangerously undermining to Christianity in that they compromise the 'certainty of proof' which miracles give to 'revealed religion;' and that it in any event it is not man's place to set a definitive standard for what is or is not a miracle of God. Text in Dutch or Flemish, translated from the English, 1706, 8vo, approximately 180 x 115 mm, 7 x 4½ inches, vignette on title page, folding map of middle east and India, 2 folding engraved plates, printed in black letter, pages: (4), 61, (5), bound in modern half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt rules and gilt lettered morocco label to spine, new endpapers. Occasional light browning to pages, otherwise a very good clean tight copy of a rare travel book. There is very little information about Robert Coverte. Although styled on the title page as Captain Robert Covert, it seems he was steward on the 'Ascension' which sailed from Plymouth in 1607. The vessel ran aground going into Surat, the primary port of the Moghul Empire, but the crew escaped ashore in boats. An English merchant introduced them to the court of the Great Mogul at Agra arriving in December 1609. Coverte with his companions started out for home from Agra at the beginning of 1610 choosing to travel overland through Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad. They reached Aleppo in December 1610 and then took a ship back to England arriving in April 1611. Coverte's account of his travels was first published in London in 1612 and again in 1614. MEDICINE - "SPANISH FLY"). "GREENFIELD, JOHN" [GROENEVELT, JOANNES]
Jeffrey Wale and John Isted, London, 1706. 188 x 115 mm. (7 3/8 x 4 1/2"). 20 p.l., 363, [3] pp.Translated from the Latin, with the author's approbation, by John Martin. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Pleasing contemporary panelled calf, covers gilt roll border, sprinkled leather frame and central panel, the latter with stencilled frame, blind-tooled tulip cornerpieces, rebacked to style with sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine panels with gilt fleuron centerpiece, brown morocco label. Blake (NLM), p. 187; Wellcome III, 168; ESTC T64914. Half a dozen small stains or abrasions to boards, corners somewhat rubbed, minor foxing throughout, a couple of small stains or rust spots, other trivial imperfections, but an excellent copy, generally clean and crisp internally, the restored binding sturdy. Written in response to being jailed for malpractice, this is a defense by a Dutch-born London physician of his use of cantharides, or Spanish fly, to treat bladder and kidney disorders. Groenevelt (1648-1615/16) received his medical degree at Utrecht in 1670 and moved to England in 1676, where he became John Greenfield. As a successful practicing physician, Greenfield promoted the use of Spanish fly, commonly known as an aphrodisiac, to treat a variety of ailments by purportedly modifying its toxicity with camphor oil. Greenfield's problems began when a woman he treated complained that the ingested cantharides had made her ill, sparking a fierce backlash by the College of Physicians that ended with Greenfield in Newgate Prison. Although Greenfield was eventually released, he never quite reco … [Click Below for Full Description]

"If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it!" - Julius Caesar A rare collection of civil war histories and Julius Caesar war commentaries! Julius Caesar's war commentaries are some of the most prolific military writings! While not specifically known for his writing, Julius Caesar wrote this book which would become a mainstay in the Latin literature canon. It focuses on first-hand account of Julius Caesar in the Callic wars, but it was written as though from a third-person view. This rare 1706 second Martin Bladen English edition was improved with notes not found in the first edition. It also features 16 stunning folding engravings of maps, city views - including Alesia - and a view of Caesar's Rhine bridge construction.
