Narrow 8vo (17 x 7 cm). Contemporary half calf, with the elephant device of the Luxdorph library in gold on front board.

Porbase (1 copy); WorldCat (2 other copies). Very rare Portuguese psalm- and songbook printed in Tharangambadi (Tranquebar), India, by the Danish Missionpost of the Lutheran Church, the first settlement of Protestant missionaries in India, founded in 1706. Tharangambadi was acquired in 1620 by the Danish crown, and the first Lutheran missionaries arrived in 1706. It was a busy port where the international language was Portugese. The town was taken by the British during the Napoleonic time, returned to Denmark in 1814, and was sold to Britain in 1845, together with other Danish settlements in India. According to the title-page this was the third edition, but we couldn't find any earlier editions. From the library of B.W. Luxdorph (1716-1788), the famous Danish bookcollector. Some notes in ink on paste-down. Binding rubbed along the extremities, lacking the front flyleaf. Text in very good condition.

Leyden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706-1707 Leyden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706-1707. . Contemporary full leather . G+. "8º, (173x111mm.); collection title-page, frontispiece, two-colour printed title-page with vignette, [49] p.: prospect with the plan and structure of the collection. [The three works following the prospect are described bellow in the comment].- // Robustly bound in contemporary full leather, with raised bands, spine labels and ornaments; upper corners, brushed. Missing front free endpaper; age-toned. Between 1706 and 1708, the printer and bookseller Pieter Vander Aa published accounts of 137 journeys that took place between 1246 and 1696 to the East and West Indies in Dutch. From 1707 he started to assemble a serial planned to have 28 volumes, 'Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen na Oost en West-Indiën', arranging each to have a common title-page for the collection, and specifics common title-page and preface for the set of journeys compiled in each volume. Moreover, each journey had its own title-page and specific preliminaries and illustrations. The composition of this volume, the first of the serial, which contain the journeys made to Asia between 1245 and 1493, is as follows: - [Plan of the work and publishing permits]. Frontispiece, two colour printed title-page with vignette, [49] p.; portada de volumen; sign.: *-*****8.; printed label with volume content glued in L5 recto of the last journey. - Giovanni da Pian del Carpine (ca. 1182-1252): Seer aanmerkelyke rey-beschryvingen van Johan du Plan Carpin, en Br. Ascelin, beyde als legaten van [...] Innocentius de IV. afgesonden na Tartaryen. Leiden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706.- // [4], 87, [5] p., vignette at title-page, 5 foldout engravings (the first one, a map of Tartaria); sign. *-*2, A-E8,F6.- // The tale of Pian de la Carpine is the oldest preserved narrative by a Western traveller after the fall of the Roman Empire of a journey to the heart of Asia, to the Karakorum, then territory of the Great Khan, Tartary. Sent by the Pope to negotiate a peace treaty with Genghis Khan, his journey, undertaken in 1245, at age 63 !, served to, at least, compile extensive information that would serve as a basis to write his Ystoria Mongalorum. - [Willem Van Ruysbroeck]: Aanmerklyke reys, gedaan door Willem de Rubruquis; voor ambassadeur van [...] Lodewyk de IXe. afgesonden na [...] Tartaryen en China, in t jaar onses heeren 1253... Leiden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706.- // - [4], 171, [13] p., vignette at title-page, 5 foldout engravings (the first one, a map of Tartaria); sign.: *-*3, A-L8, M4.- // As did Pian de la Carpine, the Franciscan monk Willem Van Ruysbroeck (1220-ca.1293) also went to Central Asia a few years later, sent as ambassador to the Tartars by Louis IX, King of France. Ruysbroeck, Rubruquis in its Latinized form, undertook a double journey by taking different routes during his outbound and return journeys, coming back with the Genghis Khan s request of Louis IX to become his vassal. But the information he provided in his report to the King Itinerarium fratris Willielmi de Rubruquis de ordine fratrum Minorum, Galli, Anno gratia 1253 ad partes Orientales, contained extensive geographical and cultural observations, especially on the lifestyle of the Mongols. - And to complete this volume, Van der Aa included a long fragment of Decades of Asia, by Joao Barros, which was published for the first time on the 28th June, 1552, as Asia de Joam de Barros / dos fectos que os Portugueses fizeram no descobrimento et conquista dos mares et terras do Oriente, printed in Lisbon by Germão Galherde. Van der Aa reprint specifically, from chapter 12 of the first book to Chapter 9 of the third book of the first volume of the Decades of Asia, entitled it as: [João de Barros (1496-1570)]: De alder-eerste scheeps-togten der Portugysen, ter ontdekking van vreemde landen uytgesonden, in het jaar 1419 ... van de caap Non en Bojador, tot de caap de Bon Esperance & Leiden: Pieter van der Aa, 1706.- // - [6], 6, 149, [19] p., vignette at title-page, 8 foldout engravings (the first one, a map of Africa); sign.: *2, **4, A-K8, L6 (L5 and L6, blanks).

[.] Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1706.

      - [NL] Coll.: 4º: *-2*4 (*3 als A3) A-O4 P6 (-P5) Q-T4 V2, 2A-3F4, 3A-Y4, gepag.: [16] 156, 413 [3], 153 [23] pp. Met een gegraveerde titelpagina, een kopvignet boven de opdracht aan Wilhem de la Palma en 6 uitslaande platen (30 x 18 cm), alle door Romeyn de Hooghe. Ex.: Leer, geribde rug met titelschild, platten gemarmerd, hoeken beschadigd, verder goed exemplaar. Bibl. verw.: Haitsma Mulier/Van der Lem 232b; Landwehr 102; Lit.: NNBW VIII, 786; Te Winkel IV, p.450. [EN] Coll.: 4º: *-2*4 (*3 als A3) A-O4 P6 (-P5) Q-T4 V2, 2A-3F4, 3A-Y4, gepag.: [16] 156, 413 [3], 153 [23] pp. with engraved title page and head-piece above the dedication to Wilhelm de la Palma and six folding plates (30 x 18 cm), by Romeyn de Hooghe. Ex: Leather, ribbed back with title label, sides in marbled paper, corners damaged, otherwise good exemplar. Bibliography: Haitsma Mulier/Van der Lem 232b; Landwehr 102; Lit.: NNBW VIII, 786; Te Winkel IV, p.450. Van der Hoeven, born in Amsterdam around 1660, perhaps worked there as merchant; he was also - according to the title page - agent of the duke of Saksen. One year before 'Hollands aeloude vryheid' Ten Hoorn published another extensive historical work by him, , 'Leeven en dood der doorlugtige heeren gebroeders Cornelis de Witt [.] en Johan de Witt', for which Romeyn de Hooghe made the title page. Wilhelm de Palma, to whom this work is dedicated, was general director of the Dutch West India Company on the Golden Coast. He was also member of the theatrical company 'In magnis voluisse sat est' for which he himself wrote pieces or translated some from French. He died perhaps after 1727, since his last known piece 'De drie Hamburgers' is dating from that year. RdH013

With richly engraved architectural frontispiece, and 281 engraved and etched plates, including 5 double-page, with architectural plans, designs and views of the Danish castles, manors, public buildings, churches, etc., including beautiful bird's-eye views of houses and gardens, views of the city of Copenhagen, etc., as well as interior architectural designs for mantelpieces, doorways, altars, pulpits, etc., by Michael Keijl and C.L. Wüst, after the drawings by L. de Thurah (Thieme-Becker attributes the views to J.J. Bruun). 20th-century half brown goatskin, gold-tooled spine.

BAL 3317; Berlin Kat. 2259; Millard arch. coll. III, 131; not in Fowler. Beautiful atlas of Danish architecture, with the text in Danish, French and German in parallel columns. It shows an abundant wealth of plans and interior and exterior architectural designs, explained in the text. The fine overall views show the castle and gardens of Rosenburg, Christiansburg, Charlottenburg, Amalienburg, etc., and the country-seats Sorgenfrey, Fredensburg, Iägerprijs, Fraidenlund, Scanderburg, Nyekiöburg, Herlufsholm, Walloë, etc. The title-page names no author, but Laurids de Thurah (1706-1759), who signed the dedication to King Frederick V, was the most influential Danish architect of his generation and a leading proponent of the late Baroque style in northern Europe. He was appointed court architect in 1733. In 1735 the new Danish king, Christian VI, made Thurah a grant specifically for the purpose of compiling Den Danske Vitruvius, but he died only months before the first volume appeared, so Thurah dedicated the book to his young son and successor. Vol. I depicts the royal palaces and public buildings of Copenhagen; vol. II the castles and other notable buildings outside the capital. A planned third volume never appeared. With bookplate. Frontispiece bound in vol. II. With some faint stains and minor restorations in the first and last leaves, but still in good condition, with only occasional and mostly marginal spots or small stains. A monumental celebration of Danish architecture, with 282 very large plates.

This is the First English language translation, of this title, published in 1706. . * WRITTEN IN THE "OLDE" ENGLISH: . This work like most of its contemporaries of this period were always written in "Olde English." That means instead of using "s" where we now would spell that word correctly, "Olde English" always used "f" to replace all "s" spellings. This is a common feature for books from around 1500 onwards until it was changed to use "s" in the modern epoch. This book being printed more than 300 years ago uses that old style and format. . *** SUBTITLE continued: ". and the Cusftoms of the Barbarous Inhabitants; with Reference to their Religion, Government, Marriages, daily Imployments [sic], Habits, Habitations, Diet, Death, Funerals &c.       Walford Sam, Smith and Ben 1706 - The first Latin edition and important as it allowed the work to be read by a wider audience, elsewhere in Europe and beyond. This copy has a nineteenth century full leather binding, with gilt tooling, there is a bookplate to the inside front board dated 1839, so presumably the year that it was re-bound. There is some minor rubbing to the leather, slight bumping to the corners and spine ends and minor fading to the gilt to the spine, but overall it is in superb condition. The text block, with red speckling as decoration to the edges, is firm and square, the pages look to have been cleaned when the book was re-bound and other than slight toning and one or two very minor spots of foxing are in excellent condition, the folding diagrams are all present and in similar condition, there is slight fading and dustiness to the top edge of the page block and the aforementioned bookplate to the inside front board, but overall the condition is unusually good.       London 1706, Freeman. Contemporary tooled calf, small 4to, 18 x 25 cm cm., 210p., engravings: title page and 30 plates, large folding engraved map and frontispiece or short title page. Q U I T E R A R E FIRST ENGLISH EDITION . . THE FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION . . PETER THE GREAT SENT IDES [A DANE] AS AMBASSADOR . . AS AMBASSADOR TO THE EMPEROR OF CHINA 1693-1730 . . This book being printed more than 300 years ago uses that old style and format.. . *** SUBTITLE continued: "... and the Cusftoms of the Barbarous Inhabitants; with Reference to their Religion, Government, Marriages, daily Imployments [sic], Habits, Habitations, Diet, Death, Funerals &c. Written by his Excellency E. Ysbrants Ides, Ambaffador from the Czar of Mufcovy to the Emperor of China. Illuftrated with a large map of the countries, drawn by the Ambaffador upon his journey, and many curious cuts ["cuts" = engravings]." . *** WHO WAS THE AUTHOR: Evert Ysbrants IDES: [1657-ca.1708] Everard E. Ides was one of the most important early Europeans to describe the Gobi Desert. His account appeared in French translation, along with a work by Cornelis de Bruijn. See below. . *** CONTAINING THE SECOND BOOK: . A second book is also added: "TO WHICH IS ANNEX'D AN ACCURATE DEFCRIPTION OF CHINA, DONE ORIGINALLY BY A CHINEFE AUTHOR: With Feveral Remarks' by Way of Commentary, Alluding to What our European Authors have Writ of that Country." . *** . WITH A SECOND TITLE PAGE: "A Short Description of the Vast Empire of China by Dionysius Kao, a Native of That Country." . *** TRANSLATION FROM DUTCH INTO ENGLISH: "Printed in Dutch by the direction of Burgomaster Witzen, formerly Ambassador in England; & now Faithfully done into English." . *** WITH 30 ENGRAVED COPPER ETCHINGS: . This work contains engraved copper-etchings and a large folding map: . This is a lovely and charming early primary source, with 30 superb copper-etched engravings, 8 are folding, plus the large engraved folding map. . THE MAP: Commonly this book is found lacking the map. Our copy has the large etched map which is very decorative. It is in fairly nice condition for a work printed over 315 years ago. There is a bit of dark at the top one-third, some small, expertly mended tears, and remains in the large size: 68 x 51 cm. A good number of these maps were trimmed. All in all an excellent item. . The map has an elaborate cartouche, showing all of China, from Moscow East to the Pacific Ocean, The North and down South to India, Laos & the Southern provinces of China, including Formosa. Also shown are Ryukyu, Corea, Japan both of which are shown as islands, and all that falls inside this great square. . Famous coastal cities as Canton, Fokien, Suchon. Famous inland cities: Nanking, Peking and other major cities nicely shown. . Nicely illustrating geographical features: mountains, rivers, provincial lines, deserts, lakes, inland seas, to the Mediterranean Sea are shown. . *** THE CHAPTERS: . Description of the fabulous palace, the foreign Jesuits and the rare animal collection. *** . A THIRD PART: "SHORT DESCRIPTION OF CHINA" . To which is added a "SHORT DESCRIPTION OF CHINA" covering the provinces of that great land: Peking & the Imperial Court and metropolis. FINELY ENGRAVED COPPER-ETCHED MAP: . This copy also contains an exceptionally clean and bright folding copper-engraved map. Commonly this book is found lacking the map. *** . A NOTE ON COLOR SCANS POSTED TO OUR WEBSITE: . Some of the color photos or scans posted to our website may show a darker or slightly different, or a bit discolored color than is actual. This is strictly due to the limitations of our scanner & digital camera, and does not reflect the true bright and light color of the paper. . The paper and all copper-etched engravings are very clean and bright. . *** CONDITION: The book is nicely bound in period original full brown tooled calf, 5 raised spine bands, with gilt decorations and covers with paneled cover designs. The covers have a tooled-design with a darker vertical oblong area in the center, with blind-stamped gilt design. The spine has a red leather label with gold-stamped titles. The binding is very solid, with some of the usual and very minor rubbing. . There is a bit of old, minor restoration to a few pages & the maps, else a very nice, clean copy. . Please review the color photos posted to our website, or ask us for better quality scans, please ask questions. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: E. Cox: A REFERENCE GULIDE TO THE LITERATURE OF TRAVEL p.330-331. "Ides, who was a Dane in the service of Peter the Great, set out from Moscow March 14th, 1692 . Traveling as a public character, he had the leisure to observe anything of note...He composed his journal for the information and satisfaction of Peter the Great who was well pleased with the results and rewarded the author with the post of Privy Councilor. The Russian embassy had less trouble with the enormous self-esteem of the Chinese than many earlier and later embassies. Before the Tartars became masters of China, it was almost impossible for foreigners to find admittance to the Imperial court. . Under the Emperor then ruling, Kanghi, ministers were courteously received and enabled to transact their business as at any other court. This accommodation was contrary to the temper & traditions of the old Chinese, who opposed it as much as they dared. Kang-hi was desirous of preventing Russian encroachments upon his territories and the Czar was anxious to establish a regular commerce with China. The exp- edition added considerable geographical knowledge to the little that was known about Northern Manchuria and China." * Oriental Library: CATALOGUE OF THE ASIATIC LIBRARY OF DR. G.E.

         The Vision, a poem.

[Edinburgh]: [s.n.], [1706] - Small 4to, pp. 4, drop-head title, some creasing and dust-soiling. [A VARIANT ISSUE not listed in ESTC where the two variants listed there are different. Our copy has no 'The the' at top of page 1 and no parentheses. Our copy has a full stop after 'POEM' and line two has 'Withches' uncorrected. Position of (3) on page three is in the centre and not off to the right. The last word on page three is 'Rail' and not 'Raill' and on page 4 in our copy the (4) is above 'ti' on 'nations' and not between the 's' and 'w' of 'nations were'. Our copy seems to fall between the recorded first and second issues. I am grateful to Dr Graham Hogg of the National Library of Scotland who kindly compared our copy to the issues held by the National Library and confirmed the differences mentioned. Dr Hogg also confirmed that the library holds 2 copies of ESTC T66289 and 5 copies of T66290. The number of copies listed elsewhere of these are 4 & 7 respectively. The poem is an attack on John Hamilton, Lord Belhaven]

Lederlin - with the last three books taken care of by Hemsterhuis. The edition impressed Bentley, who sent Hemsterhuis an admiring letter, including some conjectures of his own on the text (and it is said that the brilliance of these conjectures nearly put the Dutch scholar off any future attempts at Greek).

Experimentum anatomicum ad verarm durae matris motus causam detegendam institutum . . . In Ephemeridum Academiae Caesareo-Leopoldinae

Nuremberg 1706 - Ridley, Humphrey (1653-1708). Anatomia cerebri, mechanicam hujus atque physiologiam comprehendens . . . In Ephemeridum Academiae Caesareo-Leopoldinae naturae curiosorum. Appendix ad annum IX & X, decuriae III (Nuremberg: C. S. Froberg, 1706), pp. 76-164; 6 engraved plates. Whole volume, 4to. [4], 164pp. 198 x 160 mm. Modern vellum. Light toning, tiny wormholes in first few leaves, but very good. First Edition in Latin of Ridley’s Anatomy of the Brain (1695), which was the first original treatise on neuroanatomy published in the English language. "Ridley described the venous anatomy of the eponymous circular sinus in connection with the parasellar compartment. His methods were novel, unique, and effective. To appreciate the venous anatomy, he preferred to perform his anatomical dissections on recently executed criminals who had been hanged. These cadavers had considerable venous engorgement, which made the skull base venous anatomy clearer. To enhance the appearance of the cerebral vasculature further, he used tinged wax and quicksilver in the injections. He set up experimental models to answer questions definitively, in proving that the arachnoid mater is a separate meningeal layer. The first description of the subarachnoid cisterns, blood-brain barrier, and the fifth cranial nerve ganglion with its branches are also attributed to Ridley" (Thakur et al., "Humphrey Ridley [1653-1708]: 17th century evolution in neuroanatomy and selective cerebrovascular injections for cadaver dissection" [abstract], Neurosurgical Focus 33 [2012]). This Latin translation of Ridley’s work, which appears to have been overlooked by our standard sources on neurology, was prepared by Michael Ernst Ettmüller (1673-1732), professor of medicine at Leipzig University. The Latin version includes Ridley’s memoir on the motion of the Dura mater, "Experimentum anatomicum ad veram durae matris motus causam detegendam institutum," originally published in the Philosophical Transactions, vol. 23 (1702-3).
