First collected edition, featuring Adam of Bremen's chronicle of peoples from the Old North and the earliest known mention of the Vikings discovery of North America, of three key works in the history of Hamburg, within a larger sammelband of six works total. Around 1075CE, cleric Adam of Bremen composed a history of the church at Hamburg, which claimed stewardship over all Christian churches in Scandinavia. It provides an extensive account of the lives of people from the Old North in the Viking Age: because he was thinking about the potential conversion of the Vikings, his writing focuses especially on their cultural and religious customs. It has an important description of the temple at Uppsala, which was dedicated to the Norse gods and especially to Thor, and is particularly famous for containing the earliest recorded mention of Vinland - that is, the Viking discovery of North America. In 1706 this edition of Adam of Bremen was edited and collected with two more antiquarian works on … [Click Below for Full Description]

COEHOORN, Menno van.
Nouvelle fortification, tant pour un terrain bas et humide, ...The Hague, Henri van Bulderen, 1706. 8vo. With 14 folding engraved plates. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine. [38], 261, [1] pp. Rare first edition in French of one of the greatest classics of the art of fortification, by the Inspector General of Dutch fortifications and Master General of the artillery, Menno van Coehoorn, first published in 1685. While the Dutch had established themselves as the greatest masters of fortification during the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence from Spain, the art did not stand still after peace came temporarily in 1648. Although a few Dutch engineers spoke out for reform, the Frenchman Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) was to dominate the field with his fortifications, defensive and especially offensive strategies, and publications on the subjects from the 1670s. The Frisian artillery officer and military engineer Menno van Coehoorn (1641-1704), his only major rival, took a very different approach, more practical than theoretical, with his great fortification manual in 1685. He deployed troops more actively in the defence of fortifications and tailored his designs and strategies to the particular features of the site. This made them especially important for fortifications and siege warfare in the marshy flat lands of the Low Countries, circumstances less familiar to Vauban. With bookplate of Graf Andreas von Renard (1723-ca. 1770/80), Lieutenant General in the Austrian army, drawn and engraved by Carl Friedrich Holtzmann (1740-1811). With 14 (of 15) engraved folding plates. Contemporary vellum. [38], 261, [1] pp. plus plates. Second French edition of one of the greatest classics of the art of fortification, in the same year as the first French edition but with an additional plate, by the Master General of the artillery Menno van Coehoorn. The new plate added for the present edition shows about 165 tiny figures, numbered 1-145, A-P and about 4 unnumbered, and the text of the "avertissement" refers to these numbers and letters. Schenk, Petrus
Petrus Schenk, Amsterdam, 1706. Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash when published. Outstanding large wall map of Europe by the famous Dutch cartographer and map publisher Petrus Schenk. The map was printed from nine plates and joint together and then originally mounted on linen. An highly impressive wall map of Europe in original colors as published. With views of Roma, Paris, London, Sevillia. The title is on a banner held aloft by putti with garlands of fruit. One cartouche in the upper right corner "Gedrukt by Pet: Schenk Const en Caart Verkoper Op de Vygendam Tot Amsterdam Met Privilegie". Due of major tracks of use during the last centuries the map needed an extensive restauration. It was taken off from the linen, where it was originally mounted on. Due of the oxidations in the old colors, especially in the green colored parts overall skillful paper restorations were necessary. Also larger parts or sections of the map were and are with losses and were therefore carefully redrawn. Overall the map is now in very good condition, the old linen was removed and the nine sheets were joint now on acid free conservation paper. Old oxidations in the colors were stabilized. A beautiful and attractive example of a very rare Dutch wall map of the European continent. 842 by 962mm (33¼ by 37¾ inches).

Folio. With an engraving on the title-page by Jan Goeree and 2 engraved illustrations in text. Modern decorated cloth. 10 ll. First edition of the Dutch translation of the accounts of two British travellers, John Mildenhall (1560-1614) and John Cartwright, who travelled to Persia and the Moghul Empire. The accounts were originally edited by the British cleric Samuel Purchas (1577-1626) and published in his volumes with travelogues, entitled Purchas his pilgrimage. The majority of the work consists of John Cartwright's account of his voyage from Aleppo to Isfahan, illustrated with two engravings. "After separating from Mildenhall, Cartwright proceeded to Isfahan and continued to travel widely in the Middle East. The account of his journeys is one of the most valuable of the period" (Howgego). He describes the people, architecture, religion, geography, infrastructure, etc. Also included are two letters by John Mildenhall, written in 1509 and 1606. The first letter briefly describes his route from London to Kandahar in Afghanistan, via Smyrna, Istanbul, Aleppo, Urfa, and Van, with some occasional remarks on the cities, the weather, and the days of travelling. Mildenhall met John Cartwright in Aleppo, and the two travelled together up to Kandahar. Extremely rare complete emblematic print series (plus alternative versions of several prints) mercilessly satirizing and ridiculing King Louis XIV of France, his grandson King Philip V of Spain, the Marquise de Maintenon (whom Louis XIV had secretly married after she had been his mistress for years), many others in Louis XIV's court and his allies in the War of the Spanish Succession (1700/01-1714). Most prints, like the title-page, have texts in both Dutch and French. GROENVELT, Joannes (John GREENFIELD or GROENVELD).
A treatise of the safe, internal use of cantharides in the practice of physick.London, Jeffrey Wale, John Isted, 1706. 8vo. 19th-century tanned half sheepskin, tree-marbled paper sides. [40], 363, [3] pp. First English edition of a treatise on the medicinal use of Spanish fly (Lytta vesicatoria, traditionally classified in the family Canthardiae). Joannes Groenevelt (1648-1715/16)) was a Dutch-born physician, practising in London from 1675 on. Spanish fly was known for centuries as an aphrodisiac, but was also extremely dangerous, overdoses sometimes causing death. Greenfield, as he called himself in England, strongly advocated the use of Spanish fly, primarily for the treatment of gout and of bladder and kidney diseases. One of his patients accused him of malpractice and Groenvelt was fined and sent to Newgate prison, but obtained permanent freedom through William III's general pardon in 1691. He published the present treatise on the use of Spanish fly as a vindication of his methods. It includes a laudatory poem by Bernard Mandeville, detailed descriptions of the various medicinal uses of Spanish fly, followed by medical observations and several recipes. [DANCKERTS, ALLARD, VISSCHER, DE WIT, MORTIER and others].
Atlas.[Amsterdam, Theodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts?, ca. 1706 (dated maps 1694-1706)]. Imperial folio (53.5 x 33.5 cm). Composite atlas, with an engraved title-page, 43 double-page engraved maps and 4 double-page engraved tables, all beautifully coloured in a consistent and balanced manner by a contemporary hand, probably in the workshop of the publisher. With maps by Johannes, Justus, Theodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts, Carel and Abraham Allard, Nicolaas Visscher I & II, Frederik de Wit, Pieter Mortier, Caspar Specht and even Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in Paris. Modern maroon sheepskin. A splendid composite atlas in a beautiful and well-balanced colouring, probably from a single professional workshop, including the work of Johannes Danckerts, Justus Danckerts, Theodorus Danckerts, Cornelis Danckerts, Carel Allard, Abraham Allard, Nicolaas Visscher I & II, Frederik de Wit, Pieter Mortier, Caspar Specht) and even a map of North America by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in Paris. The makeup of the atlas resembles that of one published by Theodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts sometime between 1703 and 1713 (Koeman, Dan 4). Not only do 13 of the present 20 Danckerts maps and plates appear in that atlas, but it also apparently begins with the same allegorical title-page, drawn by Gerard van Houten and engraved by Petrus Schenk I and ends with the same plate of flags. Both include Cornelis Danckerts's Nieuw Aerdsch Pleyn, a world map in an equidistant polar projection. Although nearly half the maps in the present atlas are by the Danckerts family, several of the most recent maps in the atl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Observations sur la structure des yeux de divers insectes, et sur la trompe des papillons, contenuës en deux lettres au R.P. Lamy, ... Lyon, Leonard Plaignard, 1706. 8vo. With 3 folding engraved plates with 16 figures (original-size and microscopic views), woodcut cipher-monogram (JC for Jean Caffin?) on title-page, woodcut head- and tailpieces, decorated initial letters, and cast fleurons. Contemporary French calf, richly gold-tooled spine. [8], 157, [3] pp. First and only edition of well-illustrated observations on the structure of insect (and crayfish) eyes and a butterfly proboscis by a pioneer of French microscopy. It begins with two letters written by Puget to the Benedictine scientist François Lamy (1626-1711) in 1704, followed by 59 pages explaining the figures in the plates in great detail. The figures include original-size and microscopic (about 300x) views of the eyes of a crayfish, dragonfly and butterfly, as well as a butterfly proboscis and its interior structure.Although Robert Hooke had published his microscopic views of insects and other things in his 1665 Micrographia, little progress was made in the improvement of the microscope until the introduction of achromatic lenses in the mid-18th century. Puget (1629-1709), like Leeuwenhoek in Holland, therefore had to compensate for the limitations of his equipment with a keen sense of observation, insight and natural curiosity, experimenting, for example with a candle flame and other images reflected in the compound eyes. Unlike Leeuwenhoek, he came from a wealthy family and was able to acquire microscopes and d … [Click Below for Full Description]

With an engraved title-page by Jan Luyken, showing the interior of an apothecary and a woodcut vignette of a vase on the title-page. Vellum (ca. 1900?). 202, [14] pp. Very rare sixth edition of a Dutch translation of the 1636 Amsterdam Pharmacopoea. Unlike the original Latin edition, the Dutch translation not only lists ingredients, but also provides recipes to prepare the medicines. The numbers for quantities, as the publisher notes in the foreword, are spelled out to avoid any (potentially fatal) problems arising from typesetting errors. The original Latin Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis, the first Dutch pharmacopoeia, with recipes for nearly 200 medicines, was compiled anonymously by Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674) by order of the city of Amsterdam, to serve as an official legal standard for the correct preparation of numerous medicines. Several cities in the southern Low Countries and Germany, and even London, had produced pharmacopoeias before any Dutch city and Tulp based his on those published in Augsburg, Cologne and London. With a few contemporary annotations in the margins and the bookplate and stamp of Rimerius Gerardus Posthumus on the flyleaves. HOOGHE, Romeyn de (1645-1708)
Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn 1706. -07. 2 delen. 4to. [XVI],480,55,143,44,[4]; [XX],335,339,[8]p.
