Mrs. Arabella Hunt Dyed December 26th. 1705. Fine large mezzotint engraving by John Smith (1654-1720) after the painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1648-1723) of the celebrated amateur singer, lutenist, and teacher. Hunt is depicted seated, playing a 20-string lute

London, 1706. Chaloner Smith: British Mezzotinto Portraits 137. Kinsky 231-3. "Hawkins mentions that 'she was unfortunate in her marriage: nevertheless she lived irreproachably, and maintained the character of a modest and virtuous woman'. In fact, her 'marriage' was to another woman (Amy Poulter, already legally married but disguised as a man under the name of James Howard)... She was a favourite of both Queen Mary and Queen Anne (to whom, as Princess, she had given singing lessons). Hawkins tells the well-known anecdote: The Queen [Mary] having a mind one afternoon to be entertained with music, sent to Mr. Gostling ? and Mrs. Arabella Hunt, who had a very fine voice, and an admirable hand on the lute, with the request to attend her; they obeyed her commands; Mr. Gostling and Mrs. Hunt sang several compositions of Purcell, who accompanied them on the harpsichord; at length the queen beginning to grow tired, asked Mrs. Hunt if she could not sing the old Scots ballad 'Cold and Raw', Mrs. Hunt answered yes, and sang it to her Lute... There is much contemporary evidence for the beauty of her voice, but she does not appear to have sung on the public stage." Ian Spink in Grove Music Online. Congreve (1670-1729) was a noted English playwright and poet of the Restoration period. The author greatly admired Hunt and wrote a lengthy ode to her, "On Mrs. Arabella Hunt Singing.". 347 x 254 mm. + narrow margins. Printed on laid paper. With a printed tribute in verso to Hunt by William Congreve below image: "Were there on Earth another Voice like thine, Another Hand, so Blest with skill Divine, The late afflicted World some hopes might have, And Harmony recall thee from the Grave." Slightly worn; very small tear to blank upper margin; minor repair to upper right corner; two small pieces of mounting tape to upper margin of verso.

Title page remounted, marginal worming, page 231 a little torn Second issue (first in 1704). Leon Le Pelletier was a celebrated French alchimist. The present work is the french translation of extracts from writtings of Eirenaeus Philaletha and Georges Starkey, with additionnal commentary from certain works of Van Helmont. Our alchemist in this book develops the principles of Paracelsus and Van Helmont on Alkaest or universal solvent. Alkaest is a milestone in the realization of the philosopher's stone. By dissolving the body in their primitive matter, it allows alchemists isolate the raw metals. He moved back to Holland in 1696 where he got to know the young Peter the Great, who offered him a professorship in St Petersburg. Hartsoeker declined the offer and eventually secured a professorship in the University of Dusseldorf where he remained until he retired to Utrecht in 1716. This work is divided into 4 parts: du systeme du monde (astronomy, movement of the earth and planets, sun spots, comets); de la terre et de ses proprietez (tides, winds, currents, nature and properties of air, salts, sulphur, mercury); des principes de physique (movement, fire, light, colours); des meteores (clouds, fog, dew, snow, rain, hail, rainbows, the origin of springs, wells and rivers). Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.

Den Danske Vitruvius | Le Vitruve Danois | Der Dänische Vitruvius.Copenhagen, Ernst Henrich Berlings, 1746-1749. 2 volumes. Imperial folio (48 x 30.5 cm). With richly engraved architectural frontispiece, and 281 engraved and etched plates, including 5 double-page, with architectural plans, designs and views of the Danish castles, manors, public buildings, churches, etc., including beautiful bird's-eye views of houses and gardens, views of the city of Copenhagen, etc., as well as interior architectural designs for mantelpieces, doorways, altars, pulpits, etc., by Michael Keijl and C.L. Wüst, after the drawings by L. de Thurah (Thieme-Becker attributes the views to J.J. Bruun). 20th-century half brown goatskin, gold-tooled spine.

      - BAL 3317; Berlin Kat. 2259; Millard arch. coll. III, 131; not in Fowler. Beautiful atlas of Danish architecture, with the text in Danish, French and German in parallel columns. It shows an abundant wealth of plans and interior and exterior architectural designs, explained in the text. The fine overall views show the castle and gardens of Rosenburg, Christiansburg, Charlottenburg, Amalienburg, etc., and the country-seats Sorgenfrey, Fredensburg, Iägerprijs, Fraidenlund, Scanderburg, Nyekiöburg, Herlufsholm, Walloë, etc. The title-page names no author, but Laurids de Thurah (1706-1759), who signed the dedication to King Frederick V, was the most influential Danish architect of his generation and a leading proponent of the late Baroque style in northern Europe. He was appointed court architect in 1733. In 1735 the new Danish king, Christian VI, made Thurah a grant specifically for the purpose of compiling Den Danske Vitruvius, but he died only months before the first volume appeared, so Thurah dedicated the book to his young son and successor. Vol. I depicts the royal palaces and public buildings of Copenhagen; vol. II the castles and other notable buildings outside the capital. A planned third volume never appeared. With bookplate. Frontispiece bound in vol. II. With some faint stains and minor restorations in the first and last leaves, but still in good condition, with only occasional and mostly marginal spots or small stains. A monumental celebration of Danish architecture, with 282 very large plates.

He accompanied Huygens to Paris in 1678 where he met several prominent French scientists and worked at the Paris observatory. For some years he earned his living in Paris by making lenses, microscopes and telescopes, including some telescopes for the observatory. He invented the screw-barrel simple microscope circa 1694. Vincenzo Valgrisi. Two volumes in one, 4to (203x148 mm). (10), 200; (8, of which the last is a blank), 228 leaves. The second part opens with a separate title-page: Dell'Asia la seconda deca del S. Giovanni di Barros. Italic type with woodcut initials, printer's device on both titles. Early 18th-century half calf, gilt spine with lettering-piece, panels covered with a nice colored paper, marbled edges (slightly worn and rubbed, corners and top of the spine damaged). At the last leaf verso is a long ownership's note by a certain Leonida Antonio Falgidi from S. Polo Sabino (Rieti), dated November 24, 1706. First title-page soiled, some staining especially at the beginning and at the end of the volume, all in all a good copy. FIRST EDITION, second issue (the first issue bears the date 1561), of the first Italian version of Barros' first and second "Decades', in the only separately published translation of the sixteenth century. The first book is dedicated by the translator Alfonso de Ulloa to Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (the dedication is dated Venice, August 18, 1561); the second book opens with a dedication, dated Venice, October 15, 1561, addressed by Ulloa to the Portuguese gentleman Duarte Gomez (cf. N. Lepri, Appunti sul "camino della virtù' di Alfonso de Ulloa, in: "Il viaggio della traduzione: atti del convegno, Firenze, 13-16 giugno 2006", M.G. Profeti, ed., Florence, 2007, p. 64). João de Barros was the official court chronicler of King John III and chief administrator of the Casa da Índia, the company in charge of the overseas spice trade. His position gave him access to military and administrative documents relating to the Portuguese colonies in Asia and Africa. His magnum opus, the Décadas da Ásia, follows the structure of Livy's "Decades'. The first Decada appeared in 1552, the second in 1553. The third was published a year after the publication of Ulloa's translation and therefore it was not translated from Portuguese for a long time. A fourth final Decada, left incomplete, was published posthumously in 1615. "Their success was immediate, especially abroad - in Portugal, like other historians of recent events, he was accused of partiality and unfairness - copies soon became extremely rare, the first two "Decades' were translated into Italian before the third appeared, and Pope Pius IV is said to have placed Barros' portrait (or bust) next to the statue of Ptolemy. Barros had prepared himself very thoroughly for his task... Yet he read everything, pored over maps and chronicles and documents from the East, and even bought a Chinese slave to translate for him. With this enthusiasm, his unfailing sense of order and proportion, and his clear and copious style he necessarily produced a work of permanent value. His manner is lofty, even pompous, worthy of the great events described. If his history is less vivid and interesting than Castanheda's, that is because he wrote not as an eyewitness [only the account of the Portuguese fleet leaving Lisbon is firsthand] or actor in them but as Court historian" (A.F.G. Bell, Portuguese Literature, Oxford, 1922, pp. 193-194). Barros' "Decades' has become a classic of voyage literature. They contain references to Columbus and the Americas, but they chiefly deal with Portuguese discoveries in the period between 1415 and 1539. They include the African voyages and the discovery of the Cape of Good Hope; the voyages of Vasco da Gama, Bartholomeo Diaz, Francisco and Alfonso d'Albuquerque, Pedro Cabral, Nuno da Cunhas, and others; the activities of the Portuguese in India, with descriptions of Goa, Malacca, Java and the kingdom of Deccan, and also references to China. "In his "Prologue' [not present in the Italian edition] to the first Década, João de Barros presents an outline account of how he came to write the work. He notes that already in 1520 he had asked the king Dom Manuel to allow him to embark on the project, showing him his text on the emperor Clarimundo as a sample of his style. The king had approved of the matter, but progress had been slow. His successor, Dom João III - to whom the prologue is addressed - had given Barros a series of administrative charges that had complicated matters; but as one of these had to do with the Casa da Índia, it had also allowed him to have access to letters and correspondence that were directly relevant to the task of chronicling. Barros thus seems to have spent the late 1520s and the bulk of the 1530s preparing this work, of which a first draft (or so he claimed) was ready about 1539. The work was explicitly conceived as one of armchair scholarship, distinct from anything that came from the pen of a Fernández de Figueroa, a Castanheda, or a Correia. The chronicler intended to bring together five sets of materials: older histories such as that of Zurara; the letters and papers normally generated by the Portuguese expeditions to Asia (and to a more limited extent those of the Spaniards) and their administration there; oral accounts gathered from those participants who returned alive, and to whom Barros had privileged access; written accounts in Portuguese, whether of travel or geographical surveys of a sort that were becoming increasingly common by the 1530s, some of which were spontaneous in composition and others solicited by Barros himself; and finally, written materials in Asian languages. It is the last of these that particularly distinguishes Barros from Correia and Castanheda and that made him a model for a certain number of later writers such as Couto" (S. Subrahmanyam, Intertwined Histories: "Cronica" and "Tarikh" in the Sixteenth-Century Indian Ocean World, in: "History and Theory", 49, no. 4, 2010, p. 135).         Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en Land reysen na Oost en West-Indiën, ... beginnende met het Jaar 1246 en eyndigende op dese tijd ...

Leyden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706-1707 Leyden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706-1707. . Contemporary full leather . G+. "8º, (173x111mm.); collection title-page, frontispiece, two-colour printed title-page with vignette, [49] p.: prospect with the plan and structure of the collection. [The three works following the prospect are described bellow in the comment].- // Robustly bound in contemporary full leather, with raised bands, spine labels and ornaments; upper corners, brushed. Missing front free endpaper; age-toned. Between 1706 and 1708, the printer and bookseller Pieter Vander Aa published accounts of 137 journeys that took place between 1246 and 1696 to the East and West Indies in Dutch. From 1707 he started to assemble a serial planned to have 28 volumes, 'Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land-reysen na Oost en West-Indiën', arranging each to have a common title-page for the collection, and specifics common title-page and preface for the set of journeys compiled in each volume. Moreover, each journey had its own title-page and specific preliminaries and illustrations. The composition of this volume, the first of the serial, which contain the journeys made to Asia between 1245 and 1493, is as follows: - [Plan of the work and publishing permits]. Frontispiece, two colour printed title-page with vignette, [49] p.; portada de volumen; sign.: *-*****8.; printed label with volume content glued in L5 recto of the last journey. - Giovanni da Pian del Carpine (ca. 1182-1252): Seer aanmerkelyke rey-beschryvingen van Johan du Plan Carpin, en Br. Ascelin, beyde als legaten van [...] Innocentius de IV. afgesonden na Tartaryen. Leiden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706.- // [4], 87, [5] p., vignette at title-page, 5 foldout engravings (the first one, a map of Tartaria); sign. *-*2, A-E8,F6.- // The tale of Pian de la Carpine is the oldest preserved narrative by a Western traveller after the fall of the Roman Empire of a journey to the heart of Asia, to the Karakorum, then territory of the Great Khan, Tartary. Sent by the Pope to negotiate a peace treaty with Genghis Khan, his journey, undertaken in 1245, at age 63 !, served to, at least, compile extensive information that would serve as a basis to write his Ystoria Mongalorum. - [Willem Van Ruysbroeck]: Aanmerklyke reys, gedaan door Willem de Rubruquis; voor ambassadeur van [...] Lodewyk de IXe. afgesonden na [...] Tartaryen en China, in t jaar onses heeren 1253... Leiden: Pieter Vander Aa, 1706.- // - [4], 171, [13] p., vignette at title-page, 5 foldout engravings (the first one, a map of Tartaria); sign.: *-*3, A-L8, M4.- // As did Pian de la Carpine, the Franciscan monk Willem Van Ruysbroeck (1220-ca.1293) also went to Central Asia a few years later, sent as ambassador to the Tartars by Louis IX, King of France. Ruysbroeck, Rubruquis in its Latinized form, undertook a double journey by taking different routes during his outbound and return journeys, coming back with the Genghis Khan s request of Louis IX to become his vassal. But the information he provided in his report to the King Itinerarium fratris Willielmi de Rubruquis de ordine fratrum Minorum, Galli, Anno gratia 1253 ad partes Orientales, contained extensive geographical and cultural observations, especially on the lifestyle of the Mongols. - And to complete this volume, Van der Aa included a long fragment of Decades of Asia, by Joao Barros, which was published for the first time on the 28th June, 1552, as Asia de Joam de Barros / dos fectos que os Portugueses fizeram no descobrimento et conquista dos mares et terras do Oriente, printed in Lisbon by Germão Galherde. Van der Aa reprint specifically, from chapter 12 of the first book to Chapter 9 of the third book of the first volume of the Decades of Asia, entitled it as: [João de Barros (1496-1570)]: De alder-eerste scheeps-togten der Portugysen, ter ontdekking van vreemde landen uytgesonden, in het jaar 1419 ... van de caap Non en Bojador, tot de caap de Bon Esperance & Leiden: Pieter van der Aa, 1706.- // - [6], 6, 149, [19] p., vignette at title-page, 8 foldout engravings (the first one, a map of Africa); sign.: *2, **4, A-K8, L6 (L5 and L6, blanks).
