Maria Sibylla Merian - Zuurzak (Soursop with owlet moth).

Prijs: ?1.650,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeleing).

The Characters, Or the Manners of the Age. Made English by Several Hands. With the Characters of Theophrastus, translated from the Greek. And Prefatory Discourse to them, by Monsieur de la Bruyere. The Fourth Edition. Newly Revis'd and Corrected throughout. With the Key inserted in the Margent.

London: printed for Fr. Leach, and sold by T. Newborough [and 3 others], 1705 - Octavo (192 x 110 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, spine gilt in compartments, raised bands, red morocco label, red sprinkled edges. Contemporary bookplate bearing the calligraphic monogram "JKS" to the front pastedown, above the recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and collector of eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings. Spine slightly dry, short crack to foot of front joint, a few gatherings lightly spotted and browned, contemporary ownership inscription to title, sig. 2D finger-marked in margins. A very good copy in a notably well-preserved binding. Engraved frontispiece by Gerald van der Gucht. An attractively bound copy, including a four-leaf cancel, "An Original Chapter of the Manner of Living with Great Men. After the Method of Monsr. De la Bruyere" bound between 2B5 and 2B6, not noted in ESTC. La Bruyère's Caractères was first published in 1688, with an English translation appearing in 1699, attributed to "many hands" but apparently overseen by Eustace Budgell. "It is impossible to overstate the influence of La Bruyère's Characters on British Enlightenment views of Theophrastan character writing, and on the development of the periodical essay. Though rarely cited in studies of eighteenth-century English literature, this French collection of portraits, maxims, and satiric reflections defined for British critics across the century the character sketch as a literary genre. Samuel Johnson saw a clear line running from the courtly conduct books of Casa and Castiglione, through La Bruyère's Characters, and into the Tatler and Spectator" (Squibbs, Urban Enlightenment and the Eighteenth-Century Periodical Essay, Ch. 3, online).

        Roma Aeterna. -

1705 -, Amsterdam 1705 - 1 volume. In-8 à l'italienne 20,5x27cm. 100 pp. Reliure d'époque pleine basane marron. Dos à nerfs orné de caissons dorés. Tranches sanguines.

With splendid hand colouring. Published in Amsterdam by Henri Abraham Châtelain between 1705 and 1720.Size (print): 81 x 140 cm, (frame): 107 x 167 cm.An exceptionally fine copy of ?one of the most decorative and impressive maps of the Americas [and] ...a veritable pictorial encyclopedia of the western hemisphere?' (Goss). ?One of the most elaborately engraved maps of the Western Hemisphere ever produced?' (Schwartz & Ehrenberg). This monumental masterpiece is one of the most celebrated expressions of artistic cartography ever produced.Depicting the Americas and the entire Western Hemisphere, it was the most important map of Châtelain?s encyclopaedic Atlas Historique. With maps devised by Châtelain and text by Nicholas Guedeville, it was published in seven folio volumes. This map appeared in the sixth volume as indicated by the notion in the upper right corner. The objective of Châtelain?s opus was to arouse the reader?s curiosity regarding matters of geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry and ethnography; and this map dramatically achieves this goal, as a visual tour de force epitomises the exciting ethic of the age of discovery. In the upper center of the chart are nine portrait medallions featuring important explorers and circumnavigators, including Magellan, Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, Schouten, Van Noort, L?Hermite, Drake, Dampier, and La Salle. The text includes descriptions of their achievements, and the map features the tracks of their great voyages of discovery, as well as the route of the Manila galleons that the Spaniards used to transfer precious cargo between the New World and Asia. The most striking features of the map are the series of large vignettes, magnificently bordered with proto-rococo motifs, that portray scenes of commerce and exotic ritual in the New World. The scene depicted in the upper left is derived from Nicolas De Fer?s legendary ??Beaver map? and features the industrious creatures at the foot of Niagara Falls, while the area to the right contains a native hunting scene. The decorative cartouche above the Atlantic depicts the Newfoundland Cod fishery, and the vignettes in the adjacent corner showcase the Straits of Gibraltar and the Dutch trading post at Cape Town, with Table Mountain in the background. The lower right corner of the map is adorned with four cartographic insets featuring details of important Latin American cities including Veracruz, Rio de Janeiro, Havana, and Buenos Aires & the River Plata estuary.Surmounting these maps are illustrations relating to Hernán Cortés?s landing in Mexico in 1519 and the mining of the mountain at Potosí, Bolivia, the largest source of silver ever discovered. The most sensational expression of artistry on the map embellishes the southern Pacific, featuring a grand series of interconnected cartouches.A map of Mexico City is accompanied by a grand portrayal of the Aztec Temple of the Sun, and is surrounded by cartographic insets of important New World harbors and depictions of exotic animals such as opossums, armadillos and wild boar.To the left is a map of Louisiana, recently settled by the French, surmounted by a scene of a native Canadian wedding and various American activities such as Night Hunting and sugar refining. Maps of the Isthmus of Panama and the Windward Islands of the Caribbean are featured in the lower left corner.Geographically, the map provides a fascinating view of the world before the great wave of exploration that occurred later in the century. Curiously, while the map shows California to be an island, it is also one of the first maps to dispel the insular myth in light of father Eusebio Kino?s discoveries. The map also features numerous missions recently founded in the region. Elsewhere in North America, the Rio Grande is well delineated, but has its source in the mythical Lake Conibas. The Mississippi Basin and the Great Lakes are well depicted as a result of French exploration, but the canoe route from Georgian Bay to Montréal is shown as a single massive river, whilst actually it was far less direct and replete with portages.A mythical series of large islands, including ?Guadalcanal?' adorn the mid-Pacific, and New Guinea takes an amorphous shape adjacent to the enigmatic ?Terre De Quir?'. Australia and New Zealand assume the same partial outline as articulated by Abel Tasman almost a century before. Japan, which was not welcoming to most European explorers, has a very curious appearance, and ?Eso?', supposedly Hokkaido, is located far to the north of Honshu as part of the Asiatic mainland.Literature:- Goss, The Mapmaker?s Art, plate 7.5- Goss, The Mapping of North America, 52- Leighly, California as an Island, pl. xx- McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island, 190- Nordenskiold Collection, 753- Portinaro & Knirsch, The Cartography of North America 1500-1800, plate CVIII.- Schwartz & Ehrenberg The Mapping of America pp.146-147 & plate 85- Suarez, Early Mapping of the Pacific, fig.97- Tooley ?California as an Island?', 80, plate 80, in Map Collectors?         Historia naturalis ranarum nostratium in qua omnes earum proprietates, praesertim quae ad generationem ipsarum pertinent, fusius enarrantur. Nuremberg, Johann Joseph Fleischmann, [1753]-1758. 2 parts in 1 volume. Royal folio (48 x 33 cm). With hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 2 sets of the 24 engraved plates. Each of the 24 plates is present twice: beautifully hand-coloured with the figures still unnumbered, and in black and white with the figures numbered (and key letters added) but with Rösel's name erased. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine.

      - Nissen ZBI 3464; DSB XI, pp. 502-503; Junk, Rara, pp. 162-163. First and only edition, in Latin and German, of a beautiful work on frogs and toads, important from both an artistic and scientific point of view. August Johann Rösel (1705-1759), the author and artist, was the only natural historian of his time who studied both entomology and amphibians and reptiles, an essential combination in today's study of ecosystems. The text is printed in 2 columns, Latin on the left and German on the right, describing the natural history of all German frogs and toads in great detail. While the text proved valuable, the book's greatest fame lies in its plates. They are well designed from a practical point of view, highly artistic and skilfully executed, providing detailed and accurate information, and are beautifully and naturally coloured by hand. The 24 plates are present twice as intended by the publisher. One suite, in the earlier state without figure numbers or key letters, is beautifully coloured by hand, while the other, in the later state with figure numbers and key letters added, but with Rösel's name erased, is in black & white. In fine condition and virtually untrimmed, with only the half-title slightly spotted and occasionally very minor foxing or spots in the text. The binding is worn and scuffed but remains structurally sound. A beautiful copy of a beautiful book: a classic of natural history illustration in colour and an important contribution to the study of frogs and toads.

Amsterdam, François Halma, 1705 - Folio (403 x 257 mm), pp [xxxii] 340 [44], title printed in red and black, with frontispiece and engraved portrait of the author, and 60 engraved plates, mostly after drawings by Maria Sybilla Merian, one woodcut tailpiece, and 5 engraved vignettes; a fine, clean copy in contemporary Dutch calf, two corners slightly worn; spine ornamented in gilt, red label.First edition of the first work on the molluscs of the Molucca Islands, and a great catalogue of an important collection of marine flora and fauna, minerals, and fossils. This is of one of the most important early shell books.Rumph spent most of his life in the East Indies trading centre Amboina in the employ of the Dutch East India Company, where his pioneer descriptions of the flora and fauna earned him the sobriquet 'Plinius Indicus'. 'Day by day Rumphius accumulated manuscript descriptions and drawings of everything he observed. Even a cursory examination of the Amboinsche Rarieteitkamer reveals the outstanding talents of its originator; for the "Amboinese Curiosity Cabinet", despite its unpromising title, is full of accurate and detailed observations on the invertebrate animals encountered by him and molluscs are given special attention. First and foremost he was a brilliant field naturalist' (Dance). In 1670 Rumph went blind, and in 1674 his original drawings were destroyed by fire. The plates in this work were therefore based on drawings done in Holland by Maria Sybilla Merian from exotic shell cabinets (this accounts for the occasional intrusion of Mediterranean and West Indian species). See Dance for an account of the plates, and Schijnvoet's role as editor of the text. The fine frontispiece, engraved by Jakob de Later after Jan Goeree, depicts a shell museum with cabinets, entered through an arch with a shell-cartouche with 'Archimbaldo' shell grotesques and festoons, flanked by statues of Cybele (with mural crown and key) and Poseidon. Bearers are bringing baskets and boxes (one Chinese) to a table where scholars examine and sort shells. An East Indian landscape can be seen in the background, with people gathering and cleaning shells. The portrait, engraved by de Later after a design by Rumph's son, shows the blind Rumph at his desk with books, shells, and plants, other natural history objects behind him. The vignettes are excellent, and were drawn and engraved by Jan van Vianen. See Nissen for further details on the plates.Cobres pp 103-4; Landwehr VOC 591; Nissen ZBI 3518

Included among the plates is the rare Kino map of California entitled "A Passage by Land to California Discover'd by the Rev. Father Eusebius Francis Kino Jesuite between ye years 1698 and 1701", the first map to accurately depict the region. Another significant map is Thomas Shaw's map of the Kingdom of Tunis, entitled "To the Honourable Sr. Hans Sloane Bart. President of the Royal Society &c. This Map of the Kingdom of Tunis is with all Respect dedicated by his most obedient and humble Servant. Thomas Shaw. Algier July 7th 1729". This map preceded a subsequent variant which Thomas Shaw published in his 1738 book "Travels in Barbary and the Levant". E.W. Stackhouse's attractive armorial bookplate is mounted on the front pastedown of each volume. A couple of front endpapers are detached. Otherwise, except for minor flaws noted in the elaborate description which follows, the contents are in remarkably bright condition with crisply printed text and strong impressions of the profuse copper engraved plates. <p>A complete set, all first editions.<p>These first editions of the exhaustive publications of the Royal Society's "Philosophical Transactions" are here published, complete, in 11 volumes. These volumes covering the transactions of the Society from 1665 to 1750 were published in 4 different printings published from 1705 through 1756, enumerated below:<p>"The Philosophical Transactions and Collections, to the End of the Year 1700. Abridged and Dispos'd under General Heads. In Three Volumes. By John Lowthorp, M.A. and F.R.S.". London: Bennet, Knaplock, Wilkin, 1705. The first volume containing "The Mathematical Papers" collates as follows: [8] pages, pages 1-454, pages 543-708, and [47] pages. Complete with page numbers skipped as published. This volume is illustrated with 7 folding copper plate engravings. The second volume contains "The Physiological Papers" which collate as follows: [4] pages, and pages 1-915, illustrated with 14 folding copper plate engravings. There is marginal worming to the first 30 pages, not touching the text. The third volume, in two parts: "The First Containing all the Anatomical Medical and Chymical, And the Second all the Philological and Miscellaneous Papers" collates as follows: [4] pages, pages 1-[372], 373-688, and [19] pages, illustrated with 12 folding copper plate engravings. There are tears in pages 475 though 479 without loss.<p>"The Philosophical Transactions From the Year MDCC. (Where Mr. Lowthorp ends) To the Year MDCCXX. Abridg'd and Dispos'd under General Heads. In Two Volumes. By Benj. Motte". London: Printed for R. Wilkin, R. Robinson, S. Ballard, W. and J. Innys, and J. Osborn, 1721. Part 1, representing volume 4 of this set, containing "The Mathematical Papers" collates as follows: [2] leaves, pages [i]-viii, [20] pages, pages [1]-256, 225-432, and [1]-228 (misnumbered as published), illustrated with 16 copper plate engravings, including 14 folding, and 3 tables, including 2 folding. Part 2, representing volume 5 of this set, collates as follows: [4] pages, pages 1-399, [1] page, pages [1]-265, and [6] pages. This volume is illustrated with 42 copper plate engravings, including 32 folding (plates 1 & 2 of the first section are on the same sheet). Two significant maps are among the copper plate engravings contained within this volume. Opposite page 196 of the second part, is found the folding map entitled "A Map of the New Philippine Islands" engraved by A. Johnson. Opposite the description of California which begins on page 211 of the second part, is found the rare Kino map entitled "A Passage by Land to California Discover'd by the Rev. Father Eusebius Francis Kino Jesuite between ye years 1698 and 1701". The edges of plate 14, opposite page 356, are creased.<p>The first map to accurately depict the region, Father Kino's map disproved the theory that California was an island. A Jesuit missionary, the cartographer Eusebio Francisco Kino had initially accepted the common European misconception that California was an island. Once in Mexico, he undertook a series of overland expeditions from northern Sonora to areas near the Colorado River's delta in an effort to provide easier routes between the Jesuit missions in Sonora and Baha California. Kino became convinced that a land connection existed and his report and 1701 map showing California as a peninsula were sent to Europe. An important English version of the map was published in the "Philosophical Transactions...." The map, an accurate depiction of the lower California region, shows the correct positions of the Colorado River, the Gila River, the Sonoran Desert and a large section of what would later become Arizona.<p>"The Philosophical Transactions (From the Year 1720, to the Year 1732) Abridged and Disposed under General Heads. By Mr. Reid and John Gray, A.M.F.R.S. Vol. VI. Containing Part I. The Mathematical Papers. Part II. The Physiological Papers. Part III. The Anatomical and Medical Papers. Part IV. The Philological and Miscellaneous Papers." London: Printed for William Innys and Richard Manby, Printers to the Royal Society, at the West End of St. Paul's, 1733. This 6th volume is here bound into 2 volumes. The first, comprising volume 6 of this set, containing Part I, "The Mathematical Papers" collates as follows: [16] leaves and pages [1]-400, illustrated with 12 folding copper plate engravings, including a folding plate of Hadley's telescope opposite page 152, a folding table, and a large folding map of Tunis by Thomas Shaw (Algier July 7th, 1729) appearing opposite page 382. The inner edge of the map is creased. There is a tear to page 137 with no loss. Parts 2, 3, and 4 of volume six are here bound into volume 7 of this set, with it's own title page. The collation for this volume is as follows: [1] leaf, pages 1-252, pages [1]-332, pages [1]-76, and [8] pages. This volume is illustrated with 14 copper plate engravings and a folding table. There is minor worming to the last 16 pages, just touching on an occasional letter.<p>Thomas Shaw's map of the Kingdom of Tunis "To the Honourable Sr. Hans Sloane Bart. President of the Royal Society &c. This Map of the Kingdom of Tunis is with all Respect dedicated by his most obedient and humble Servant. Thomas Shaw. Algier July 7th 1729" preceded it's subsequent publication in Shaw's 1738 book "Travels in Barbary and the Levant". The English cleric and cartographer Thomas Shaw went to Queens College, in Oxford. After entering the order, he was appointed Chaplain in Algiers. He drew his map of Tunis during his stay and, elected a member of the Royal Society upon his return, published his map.<p>The Supplement entitled "The Philosophical Transactions (For the Year 1732) Abridged: Being a Supplement to Mr. Reid's and Mr. Gray's Abridgment". London: Printed for W. Innys in Pater-noster-row, and R. Manby and H.S. Cox on Ludgate-Hill, 1747, is bound in at the front of volume 8 of this set. The pagination to this supplement is as follows: [4] pages, pages [1]-107, and [1] page, illustrated with 6 folding copper-plate engravings. The contents of this supplement include a meteorological account of an eruption of Mount Vesuvius by Nicholas Cyrillus; an account of observations made on board the Chatham Yacht for a trial of an instrument for taking angles by John Hadley in 1732; and Alexander Stuart, M.D.'s article on experiments to prove the existence of a fluid in the nerves.<p>Bound into this eighth volume following the supplement are the first parts of "The Philosophical Transactions (From the Year 1732, to the Year 1744) Abridged, and Disposed under General Heads, The Latin Papers being translated into English. By John Martyn, F.R.S. Professor of Botany in the University of Cambridge. In Two Volumes. Viz. Vol. VIII. Containing, Part I. The Mathematical Papers. Part II. The Physiological Papers. Vol IX. Containing, Part III. The Anatomical and Medical Papers. Part IV. The Historical and Miscellaneous Papers." London: Printed for W. Innys, C. Hitch, T. Astley in Pater-noster-Row, T. Woodward, C. Davis in Holbourn, and R. Manby and H.S. Cox on Ludgate Hill, 1747. The first 2 parts, as described in the title, are here bound into volume 8 of this set following the Supplement. The collation is as follows: pages [i]-xxviii, [1] leaf, pages [1]-376, [1] leaf, pages [377]-847, illustrated with 32 folding copper plate engravings and 2 folding charts. The 2 charts are observations of latitude, variation of the magnetic needle, and weather made by Captain Christopher Middleton during voyages made from London to Hudson's Bay in 1731 and 1735. The third and fourth parts, as described in the title, are bound in volume 9 of this set and collates as follows: [1] leaf, pages [1]-503, and [25] pages, illustrated with 29 folding copper plate engravings, including a folding view of "Par Bay", Cornwall opposite page 454. A letter from Rev. John Clayton to Dr. Grew relating to Virginia in 1687 is published on pages 465 through 475 of this volume. There is a tear to page 341 without loss and early ink notes are penned on pages 486 through 490.<p>"The Philosophical Transactions (From the Year 1743, to the Year 1750) Abridged, and Disposed under General Heads. The Physiological Papers. Part III. The Anatomical and Medical Papers. Part IV. The Historical and Miscellaneous Papers." London: Printed for Lockyer Davis and Charles Reymers, against Gray's-Inn-Gate, Holborn, Printers to the Royal-Society, 1756. The first 2 parts of this 10th volume, The Mathematical Papers and The Physiological Papers, bound in volume 10 of this set collate as follows: pages [i]-xxviii, and pages [1]-797, illustrated with 37 folding copper plate engravings including a folding plate of an Equatorial Telescope built by James Short. The last 2 parts, The Anatomical and Medical Papers and The Historical and Miscellaneous Papers, bound into volume 11 of this set, collate as follows: [1] page, pages [798]-1393, and [15] pages, illustrated with 50 folding copper plate engravings. "The Crounian Lectures on Muscular Motion" by James Parsons published on pages 1114 through 1205 are illustrated with 8 plates. A superb copper plate engraving of "The Opah or King Fish" is engraved opposite page 880. A copper plate illustrating Siamese Twins, with details showing their development in the womb, is engraved opposite page 1216. Two copper plates, including a map and a survey of Roman Works in Yorkshire where Delgovitia may have been are bound opposite page 1254. These plates are respectively entitled "A Map of Part of Yorkshire: with the Roman Roads leading to and from Delgovitia" and "A Survey of the Roman Works in Yorkshire where the Ancient Town of Delgovitia is supposed to have stood". Though it's location is unknown, several scholars have postulated various locations for the ancient Romano-British town of Delgovitia (Delgovicia) which was mentioned by the geographer of Ravenna and which is also mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary as being east of Eboracum (Roman York). There is minor worming in the lower margins of pages 1353 to the end of this volume, touching on a very few letters.<p>As stated by The Royal Society: "In 1662, the newly formed 'Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge' was granted a charter to publish by King Charles II and on 6 March 1665, the first issue of Philosophical Transactions was published under the visionary editorship of Henry Oldenburg, who was also the Secretary of the Society. The first volumes of what was the world's first scientific journal were very different from today's journal, but in essence it served the same function; namely to inform the Fellows of the Society and other interested readers of the latest scientific discoveries. As such, Philosophical Transactions established the important principles of scientific priority and peer review, which have become the central foundations of scientific journals ever since...."

Guibert, p. 36, n° 7. Bibliothèque Nationale, Descartes (1937), n° 537.

Come in pelle parte bruno. Una coda mancanza e piccole wormholes. mascella superiore incrinato testa. A Review of the Affairs of France: With Observations on Transactions at Home.

06- London, 1705 Book. Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A very scarce volume of issues of Daniel Defoe's Review. Bound together with the first edition of his Reply to a Pamphlet. Volume II of eventual VIII under the broader title of Review, although each volume stands alone and all are incredibly scarce. Known holdings for this volume are the British Library and Trinity College Cambridge. Collated: Volume complete of itself despite errors in pagination. Pamphlet to rear is also complete and first state with curved brackets and line 11 reading 'quiet' to page 24. (ESTC P1863, ESTC T56960)This volume ofDefoe's Reviewcollects the four page weekly issues of the periodical together with a dated title page, preface and index. Bound together from unsold original weekly issues which were continuously paginated. This is evident in the varying paper and type quality throughout as well as numerous errors in pagination as standard. The pagination and issue numbersbegan anew for Volume II, starting on Tuesday, February 27 1705. Volume II runs from February to December 1705 in 127 parts. Defoe's Review is one of the earliest examples of the political periodical which became popular in the 18th century. In the aftermath of a century of political upheaval and Civil War, political writing would be at the forefront of literature, resulting in the beginning of publications such as The Spectator and The Examiner, and from it the success of authors such as Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift. Defoe's Review was an early innovator in the field, publishing a regular political essay and discussion on current affairs, and set the standard for the periodical style that was to come. It is believed that Defoe wrote the whole thing himself, including the letters from readers. An important and rare work in the political and literary history of England and for any Defoe scholar. Condition: In a full blind stamped calf. Externally, sound with rubbing and bumping. Loss to leather at head and tail of the spine. Rear joint starting and front hinge strained after endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages age toned with spotting and heavier patches of foxing throughout. Tidemarks to the top of the latter half of the volume. All text is present and legible with one ink annotation mark, no inscription. Overall: GOOD.
