Opticks: or, a treatise of the reflections, refractions, inflections, and colours of light.

Complete with decorative headpieces, initials, 12 folding engraved plates, woodcut diagrams in text, errata and publishers ads. Contemporary calf, rebacked, covers worn; a couple of plates with small tears repaired, some browning and soiling, but still a good sound copy. Signatures of Mary Francis and John Burridge on the title page, and the bookplate of Arnold Thackray. Third edition, corrected. Regarded as one of the great classics of optics, this work expounds Newton?s corpuscular or emission theory of light, and is the first work to contain his optical discoveries in a collected form. His set of ?queries? (the complete 31, up from 16 in the original edition of 1704) on the nature of matter was considered to be the most important feature of the Opticks and had a profound influence on scientific thought.According to Babson, page 68, ?This is a reprint of the previous edition (1718, the second issue of second edition), save for a few corrections and the addition of one passage in the last sentence referring to Noah and his sons.? (This edition was apparently shortened by Newton.) Our copy contains the two pages of publisher?s advertisements from the previous edition of 1718 (see Babson, 133).

Reflections on Mr Burchet’s Memoirs: Or Remarks on His Account of Captain Wilmont’s Expedition to the West-Indies

London, 1704. (xviii) 171 pp. Very nice copy of a scarce book documenting a cat fight between a British naval officer and his army counterpart. Robert Wilmot?'s 1695 expedition was sent to Jamaica to protect British interests against the French. Lillingstone?'s regiment of about 1200 soldiers accompanied the expedition, which attacked the French at Hispaniola. Although the venture was poorly planned and a number of Lillingstone?'s men were sick and ineffective, they somehow managed to capture considerable loot. However, this became the cause of a quarrel between Wilmot and Lillingstone, who were already on poor terms. The entire force, ravaged by yellow fever, retired; Wilmot sailed for England and died of the same disease on the way home. When Lillingston returned to England he published a scathing attack on Wilmot. In reply, Josiah Burchett, Secretary of the Admiralty, published an account of the affair which did not reflect well on Lillingston. This is Lillingston?'s answer to Burchett?'s critique. Thanks to the tortured train of attacks and counter-attacks, this work is a detailed summary of the events that took place on the expedition, and is an important document in the War of the English Succession. A clean fresh copy bound in mottled calf, rebacked to match, with original spine label laid down.

"Legion's humble address to the Lords. To the right honourable the Lords spiritual and temporal, assembled in Parliament"

[London. 1704]. "Broadsheet, small folio (315 x 152 mm); left-hand margin trimmed close in lower half of sheet, touching a few letters, minor tears from previous fold, uniformly toned. A rare broadsheet sometimes attributed to Defoe (although more likely written by his agent in Scotland John Pierce), praising the Lords for their action affirming the right of freeholders to vote in the Aylesbury election. There is much evidence to associate Pierce with this pamphlet, and he may well have been the author, though it is possible that he and Defoe collaborated on it. & & Moore 74 describes a 4- page printing of this address, but notes there is a ""copy with 2 unnumbered pages"" at Indiana University. This copy would seem to conform to that at Indiana. & & ""There can be no doubt that [Defoe] was deeply involved in it, in conjunction with ... John Pierce, ... the weight of evidence is in favour of Pierce, rather than Defoe, as the actual author"" (ESTC citing Furbank and Owens, Defoe de-attributions).       Tiguri, typis D. Gessneri, 1704. Small-8vo. pp. (14), 231, (21). Recent vellum. A translation into Latin by the great Swiss naturalist J.J. Scheuchzer of Woodward's 'An essay towards a natural history of the earth' published in 1695. John Woodward (1665-1728) was a famous English geologist and founder of the Woodwardian chair of geology at the University of Cambridge. "An important figure in the history of geology, Woodward proposed that a universal flood had once disintegrated all the stony and mineral matter forming the earth's crust along with animals and plants, though the latter were not destroyed beyond recognition. Fossils, he asserted, were definitely the remains of once living animals or plants. This 'Essay' had a wide effect in Great Britain and Europe" (Hoover 896).//Eyles in his essay 'John Woodward a bio-bibliographical account of his life and work' published in 'J. Soc. Bibphy nat. The present Dutch edition was augmented with 27 plates and an essay by the minister Rutger Schutte, an expert on biblical antiquities.Pococke's description of Egypt was one of the earliest modern accounts of the area, and includes a report of his journey along the Nile, which he ascended as far as Philae. The narrative enjoyed great popularity and was translated into several European languages. "The quality and particularly the earliness of his observations and their record in prose, maps, and diagrams make him one of the most important near eastern travellers, ranking with Frederik Ludvig Norden and Carsten Niebuhr, in stimulating an Egyptian revival in European art and architecture, and recording much that has subsequently been lost" (Baigent). Very fine uniformly bound and uncut set.

Legion's humble address to the Lords. To the right honourable the Lords spiritual and temporal, assembled in Parliament

[London 1704 - Broadsheet, small folio (315 x 152 mm); left-hand margin trimmed close in lower half of sheet, touching a few letters, minor tears from previous fold, uniformly toned. Moore 74 describes a 4- page printing of this address, but notes there is a "copy with 2 unnumbered pages" at Indiana University. This copy would seem to conform to that at Indiana. "There can be no doubt that [Defoe] was deeply involved in it, in conjunction with . John Pierce, . the weight of evidence is in favour of Pierce, rather than Defoe, as the actual author" (ESTC citing Furbank and Owens, Defoe de-attributions). ESTC locates 8 copies, Lilly, UC-Riverside, and Yale only in the U.S.

An historical and geographical description of Formosa, an island subject to the Emperor of Japan. Giving an account of the religion, customs, manners, &c. of the inhabitants. Together with a relation of what happened to the author in his travels; particularly his conferences with the Jesuits, and others, in several parts of Europe .

      - London, printed for Dan. Brown, a.o., 1704.Contemporary panelled calf (hinges splitting but holding). With engraved folding map, engraved folding plate showing the 'Formosan Alphabet' (with tear), and 15 (of 16) engraved plates showing costumes, money, buildings, boats etc.(margin of folding plate sl. dam.; plate 12 missing as often) XIV,(56),327,(9) pp.* First edition. - One of the most fantastic literary forgeries of all times. Psalmanazar (N.F.B. de Rodes ?), a native from the south of France, led the life of a adventurer. Being instructed by Jesuit tutors in the history and geography of Japan he pretended to be a native of Japan, under influence of chaplain William Innes, to render the story more plausible, this was changed into being a native of Formosa. In London he attracted at once popular interest. Psalmanazar invented his own 'Formosan' language etc., and he wrote his fictitious narration. What was not due to his own imagination he borrowed from the accounts of Varenius and Candidius. Doubt at once arose over the authenticity of his narrative, and after Innes was sent as chaplain-general to the English forces in Portugal, he felt incompetent to sustain his imposture unaided.
