Discourses Concerning Government, By Algernon Sidney, Son to Robert

1704. A Landmark in the Philosophy of Republican Government, A Book Admired by Jefferson Sidney, Algernon [1622-1683]. Discourses Concerning Government, By Algernon Sidney, Son to Robert Earl of Leicester, And Ambassador from the Commonwealth of England to Charles Gustavus King of Sweden. Publish'd from an Original Manuscript. Carefully Corrected. To Which is Added, the paper he Deliver'd to the Sheriffs Immediately Before His Death. And an Alphabetical Table. London: Printed by J. Darby, 1704. [viii], 424 [i.e.420], [48] pp. Copperplate portrait frontispiece. Folio (12" x 7-1/2"). Contemporary paneled calf, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Light rubbing to boards and extremities, some minor nicks and scratches, a bit of edgewear to lettering piece, corners bumped and lightly worn, front hinge cracked, rear pastedown loose, early armorial bookplate to front pastedown (St. Columbs). Light toning, negligible faint dampstaining to a few leaves, internally clean. A handsome copy. * Second edition. The first edition of this important work was published in 1698, fifteen years after Sidney's execution for treason in 1683. A reply to Filmer's Patriarcha, the Discourses is one of the earliest modern statements of republican ideals. He proposes a doctrine of natural justice and governmental order from which all institutions vary at their peril. More important, Sidney asserts that a king's authority is granted by parliament, which has the additional power to depose him-controversial ideas indeed during the Restoration period. Thomas Jefferson, one of several individuals influenced by this text, described it as "... probably the best elementary book of the principles of government, as founded in natural right which has ever been published in any language; and it is much to be desired in such a government as ours that it should be put into the hands of our youth as soon as their minds are sufficiently matured for that branch of study." (Sowerby). Sidney was beheaded by Charles II in part for his involvement in the Rye House plot. One of the other charges against him was that he had committed treasonable libel in his Discourses, which was still in manuscript at that time. Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, III:12. English Short-Title Catalogue T113295.

Historia Plantarum Species hactenus editas aliasque multas noviter inventas & descriptas complectens

London: M. Clark for H. Faithorne, 1704. Three volumes, folio; some browning and scattered foxing particularly in the third volume (as usual); a good set in recent period-style half calf with marbled paper boards, a handsome set. With a description of Dampier's west Australian herbarium. First edition, first issue, complete with the rare third volume published eighteen years after the main work in a single issue limited to only 200 copies: this rare third volume notably includes contemporary descriptions of some of the plants collected by Dampier on the northwest coast of Australia.John Ray was considered the "father of British botany" and this was his greatest work, the most important botanical text of the seventeenth century, and the foundation of modern botany. By the time he wrote the first volume Ray had gained an "encyclopaedic knowledge of the literature of botany and horticulture, from ancient times to the work of his contemporaries, including the latest acquisitions from microscopy. His clear mind and balanced judgement enabled him to select the well-attested facts from this mass of material and to present them in a rational perspective..." (Morton, History of Botanical Science). This work has specific importance to Australia. In 1699 Dampier, the first Englishman to land on the Australian continent, gathered together specimens of Australia's exotic flora. This collection of plants came from various places on the West Australian coast including Dirk Hartog Island, Shark Bay, near present-day Karratha, and East Lewis Island in the Dampier Archipelago south of Broome. Through his friendship with Thomas Woodward, Ray had on loan a large selection of Dampier's precious plant collection meaning that he was able, in the third volume of this work, to include a description of plants from Dampier's precious herbarium that had survived shipwreck on the navigator's return journey to England. In total, Ray described eighteen Dampier plants, nine from Australia, five from Brazil, one from Timor, two from New Guinea and one of an unknown locality. In turn, in Dampier's account of his voyage published in 1703, a translation of Ray's descriptions form the basis of his Account of Several Plants. John Ray's method of classification is called a polynomial system, a verbal description of the plant. At this time there was no set format for zoological or botanical descriptions, but if this format is far from ideal, it was nevertheless a milestone for Australian botany. This is the preferred first issue of the book, with the first state of the title pages to volumes one and two dated 1686 and 1688 respectively. A second issue appeared seven years later in 1693, while the important third volume containing Australian species was issued only once, in 1704.

Opticks: or, a treatise of the reflections, refractions, inflections, and colours of light.

Complete with decorative headpieces, initials, 12 folding engraved plates, woodcut diagrams in text, errata and publishers ads. Contemporary calf, rebacked, covers worn; a couple of plates with small tears repaired, some browning and soiling, but still a good sound copy. Signatures of Mary Francis and John Burridge on the title page, and the bookplate of Arnold Thackray. Third edition, corrected. Regarded as one of the great classics of optics, this work expounds Newton?s corpuscular or emission theory of light, and is the first work to contain his optical discoveries in a collected form. His set of ?queries? (the complete 31, up from 16 in the original edition of 1704) on the nature of matter was considered to be the most important feature of the Opticks and had a profound influence on scientific thought.According to Babson, page 68, ?This is a reprint of the previous edition (1718, the second issue of second edition), save for a few corrections and the addition of one passage in the last sentence referring to Noah and his sons.? (This edition was apparently shortened by Newton.) Our copy contains the two pages of publisher?s advertisements from the previous edition of 1718 (see Babson, 133).

Obras Historicas, Politicas, Filosoficas, y Morales

Joseph Texido, Barcelona 1704 - Vellum is moderately wrinkled and soiled, as pictured. A remnant of each leather tie is still attached (two to the front board and two to the rear, but the majority of each tie is missing). Text block is moderately age-darkened and head of text block is mildly foxed. Discoloration from water exposure to the upper and/or lower edge of most pages. Moderate insect damage (holes) to the lower corner of the half title page (not affecting text), and minor chipping to several other leaves. Some pages are moderately age-darkened, while others remain quite bright. Hinges are slightly worn, but overall the binding is sound, square and tight. Overall, this scarce copy is in good condition (or perhaps better than average for its age!). We are happy to answer questions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
