Valk, Gerardium & Leonardum
Greece: Amsterdam Valk, Gerard and Leonard c1702. Copper engraved map of Greece and the Archipelago by Gerard and Leonard Valk. Original full wash colour; verso blank. The map first appeared in Schenk and Valk's "Atlantis Sylloge Compendiosa," c.1702; it shows the whole Greek peninsular and the Aegean with the coast of Asia Minor and the adjoining countries to the North. The territories of Greece and Albania, Macedonia and the Islands with full wash colour. Major towns heightened with red. Good dark impression with bright original full wash colour; occasional offset of colour; two old ink numbers to blank margins. The maps of Schenk and Valk are famous for their full wash colour, however often the pigments, particularly in the greens deteriorated leading to browning and eventually causing the paper to crack, for this reason it is unusual to see such bright original colour. Gerard Valck or Gerardus Valk 1652 - 1726; Leonardus Valk 1675-1746 Gerard Valck and his son Leonard were Dutch engravers, globe makers and publishers active in Amsterdam at end of the 17th century; they were in business with Pieter Schenk who was a pupil of Gerard and later married the Valks sister in 1686. Leonard Valck kept the family further united by marrying his first cousin Maria Schenk in 1710. In 1686 a privilege is granted to Petrus Schenck and Gerardus Valck for the printing & sale of their prints. The Valck and Schenk families where active as print sellers, publishers and printers of maps, atlases and architectural drawings as well globes. They accquired plates from the stock … [Click Below for Full Description]

An abridged, English, translation of Veitia Linaje's NORTE DE LA CONTRATACION DE LAS INDIAS OCCIDENTALES (Seville, 1671). A most detailed account of Spanish trade practices in the West Indies, describing the organization of the courts, administration of the Armada, work of the missionaries, and the slave trade, as well as general information on the state of commerce in the West Indies through the 17th century. Translated from the original Spanish by Capt. John Stevens, who states in the preface: "I have not, in the Englishing of this work, confin'd my self to the Rules of Translation, which would oblige me neither to add or diminish, for I have done both...." Following the preface, Stevens has inserted extensive lists of commodities exported to Europe from the Spanish West Indies, as well as items imported from Europe to the colonies. One of the interesting manuscript inscriptions on the first preface page reads: "This Book was given me by Joseph Severance in the Bay of Honduras on ye Last day of July and in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and forty - who was his friend & well wisher - David Nickerson." DELISLE, Guillaume Engraved by Liébaux, Jean Baptiste
Copper engraving. Original outline colour. Very good condition; both bottom margins have marks slightly affecting the image. Size: 61.5 x 47 cm. (24 x 18½ inches) Guilliame Delisle (1675-1726) is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. He adopted entirely new principles in cartography and set about making a thorough reform in that subject. Delisle recognized that the new methods of measuring by scale and of marking the places were very valuable for cartography; with this help he therefore produced a new and more accurate picture of the world. This beautiful map of the British Isles is extending west to east from Kerry to Oldenbourg and north to south from The Shetland Islands to Normandy, coloured by region. Fantastic title cartouche at top left, decorated with fish, birds, horses, fishing nets, with Neptune above and water below, secondary cartouche with five scales at lower right.
