Artist: Fer de Nicolas d ; issued in: Paris; date: d1702 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Some restoration at centerfold; - size (in cm): 23 x 30,5; - description: Detailed city map of Marseille in France.; - vita of the artist: Nicolas de Fer ( 1646 - 1720 in Paris) was a French cartographer and geographer. He also was an engraver and publisher. De Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, who was also a cartographer. When he was 12, he became the apprentice of Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx, and made his first map, of the Canal du Midi, at the age of 23. After the death of his father in June 1673, de Fer was so successful at improving the firm that, in 1690, he became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. With support from the Spanish and French Royal Families, de Fer also became official geographer for Philip V and Louis XIV, the kings of Spain and France, respectively. Because of this, his maps became Bourbon propaganda, endorsing French King Louis XIV.His business flourished, producing town plans, atlases, wall maps, and more than 600 sheet maps.He made maps of places in Europe and North America, including New Spain, places fortified by Vauban, the Low Countries, and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1698, de Fer published a map of North America, which included a depiction of beavers building dams near Niagara Falls. Seventeen years later, Herman Moll published an identical map as his own, known as the -Beaver map-. De Fer became the official geographer for His Catholic Majesty in 1720.Two of his sons-in-law, G … [Click Below for Full Description]

Apud Henricum et viduam Theodori Boom, Amsterdam, 1702. 329 p. + 6 p. index. 14 cm. Illustrated title page. Rebound in brown cloth with gold lettering on spine. Covers soiled, especially rear. Lightly bumped. James Young Simpson's bookplate on front pastedown along with small bookseller's label and ink notation. Damp stains to lower parts of pp. 25 - 52 and 267 - 287. Erroneously attributed to Magnus Albertus (Saint Albert the Great), "Women's Secrets" is about diseases of the female reproductive organs while the second part is concerned with herbs, gemstones, and animals. The book was likely written by a disciple of Albert, not the great man himself. Borrowing the name of a famous writer was common in the days before copyright and would ensure more copies sold. Note the bookplate for Scottish obstetrician Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870), best remembered for introducing chloroform as an anaesthetic. Within weeks of his 1847 demonstration of the superiority of chloroform, it had almost universally displaced ether as a general anesthetic. Latin text. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New edition, after the original 1702 published by the same publisher. Illustrated four folding maps, one of Italy with its various kingdoms and republics. Full contemporary calf. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. A slight lack in mind. Slot in the upper joint tail. A torn map of Mantua. Friction. Pretty good copy. The war in Italy is an excellent narrative, teeming with picturesque details; it begins in a very romantic way to tell before starting the battles of Piedmont, Turin and Milan, and the political intrigues between Spain, France, the Duke of Savoy and the duchies of Italy. The book draws indeed two records, memoirs and historical genre, and they will find love affairs, many trips and descriptions as a rigorous account of battles and armies in Italy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. GREGORY, David.
First edition Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1702. A fine copy of the first text book of astronomy based on Newtonian principles, which contains the first printings of Newton's lunar theory and his "classical scholia". Babson 71; Gray 87. "The nephew of James Gregory, the mathematician, and the son of the Laird of Kinnairdie, David Gregory (1659-1708) was educated at the University of Edinburgh where he was soon appointed to it chair of Mathematics in 1683. In 1684 he sent Newton a manuscript showing the application of the method of infinite series to a variety of geometrical problems. The two met in 1691 and shortly afterwards Newton helped him obtain the Savilian Chair of Astronomy at Oxford. In 1702 Gregory published Astronomiae Physicae & Geometricae as the first textbook of astronomy based on Newtonian principles. The introduction includes the "Classical Scholia" which Newton had prepared for insertion in his planned second edition of the Principia. This attempted to show that essential elements of Newtonian science were also espoused in classical times. Gregory also included Newton's Theory of the Moon's Motion [Lunae Theoria Newtoniana, pp.332-336], long used as a guide for practical astronomers in determining the moon's motion." 1702. The map reflects the European knowledge of the Pacific North West of America and the North East of Asia in the early 18th century. The most striking aspect of the map is that it is projected as a mirror image of the actual surface geography with Japan in the east and North America in the West. Of particular interest with this rare map is the depiction of California. California was for the the … [Click Below for Full Description]
