GRIMALDI Costantino
Colonia Colonia, Con licenza de'Superiori Appresso SEBASTIANO HECHT, 1702. [Click Below for Full Description]

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c. 4 BC-65 AD, known as Seneca the Younger was a Roman stoic philosopher, statesman and dramatist whose works continued to be very influential in western thought throughout the middle ages and renaissance. Sir Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704) had fought as a royalist in the Civil War until 1644, subsequently being imprisoned on suspicion of being a spy. Following his return from exile in the 1650s he began his long career as an enormously prolific political writer, producing 130 known titles, including numerous translations from the classics and Spanish literature. These were generally written in a robust and colloquial style, which offended some contemporary purists. L'Estrange was always partisan, supporting the royalist and Church of England cause and was able to exercise considerable influence in suppressing dissenting writings … [Click Below for Full Description]

Burmannus was held in high esteem as an editor of Latin poets. During his career, first in Utrecht and later in Leiden, he produced important editions of Horace, Phaedrus, Claudianus, Ovidius, Lucanus, the Poetae Latini Minores and this Valerius Flaccus. He himself was also a skilled neolatin poet. The Leiden professor David Ruhnken, 1723-1798, regarded him 'as equal to N. Heinsius in learning, but inferior in acumen and in emendatory skill'. (Sandys, 2,444/45) Burmannus tells in the praeface to this 1702 edition, which he calls an 'editio iterata', that it is based on that of Nicolaas Heinsius of 1680, an edition that was far better than any previous one, but 'tamen fatendum est', had also printer's errors on almost any page. Most of his books are meant to provide practical instruction in speaking, in letter writing, and in politic behavior. London, 1702. A very scarce early Eighteenth Century legal document, in attractive leather binding. Dealing with the case of Sir John Fenwick, 3rd Baronet, who was implicated in schemes to assassinate William III, which would come to light in 1695 and 1696. He would be beheaded in controversial and noteworthy circumstances and was the last person ever executed under an Act of Attainder. A curious and interesting document of both British history and law. Condition: In decorative calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, there is wear to the boards, extremities and backstrips, with some cracking to joints and significant strain to hinges. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but are lightly spotted throughout, with some offsetting. There are ink inscriptions to the pastedown, as well as bookplates, and the front free endpaper. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
Incisione su rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione" Interesting map showing the distribution and types of fauna in Asia, by Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. The stunning cartouche features an elephant, lion, camel, monkeys and exotic birds. Monstrous fish adorn the oceans, and various animals are scattered across the continent. Geographically the map is very imaginative with a bulbous Iedso (Hokkaido) attached to Honshu by a narrow isthmus, and Compagnie Land and Staten Eyland to the north of Hokkaido. Nova Zemba is shown as an island; whereas early cartographers typically depicted only the southern and western coastlines reflecting the discoveries of Barents and Linschoten. The Caspian Sea is depicted with a curious oval shape, and the mythical Lac Chiamay is shown with its five south-flowing rivers. In Southeast Asia Terra dos Papous is separated form New Guinea, I. Celebes (Sulawesi) is far too close to Borneo, and a portion of Australia (Nova Hollandia) is depicted. Copper engraving, in very good condition. Monaco Munich 359 235
