[BIBLE]; Hugo, Herman; Bolswert, Boëtius (illustrator); Arwaker, Edmund (translator)
London: Henry Bonwicke, 1702. Third edition thus of the most popular religious emblem book of the seventeenth century, first published in Latin in 1624, and in Arwaker's English translation in 1686. Pia Desideria features a sequence of Biblical verses drawn primarily from the Book of Job, the Song of Solomon, and the Psalms: each verse is illustrated with a full-page copper engraving, and accompanied by a brief poem by the Jesuit father Herman Hugo. In their iconography, the emblems follow the "Amor and Anima" tradition, in which the figures of a young boy and girl symbolize the relationship of Divine Love to the Human Soul: he appears before her with a lantern in the night, teaches her to walk, springs her from a cage. A near-fine copy of a classic emblem book, with female provenance, in a beautiful contemporary English binding. Octavo: [10], 238, [2]. Contemporary full red morocco, boards paneled and decorated in gilt, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately lettered and tooled in gilt, all edges gilt. Engraved and letterpress title pages, forty-six full-page engravings throughout text, two pages of advertisements. Ink ownership signature of Catherine Phipps dated 1709 on front free endpaper; her later signature, as Catherine Ingoldsby, on letterpress title. Three armorial bookplates to front endpapers. Light rubbing to joints, small spot to base of upper board, faint tidemark to foreedge of text block.

London: Printed for Bernard Lincott [i.e. Lintott], 1702. In two parts. [2], 152, 288pp, [16]. Recent black cloth, lettered in gilt. Very minor wear to extremities. Recent bookplate of the Bath Municipal Library to FEP, with their occasional embossed stamps throughout, lightly browned, wormed throughout, trails primarily confined to margins though touching text at times with occasional loss of characters. The first translation into English of Marie Catherine d'Aulnoy's (1650/51-1705) Memoires des avantures singulieres de la cour de France (1692). There are four editions recorded for 1702. No priority has been established. All are scarce, with this edition printed for Bernard Lintott being no exception, ESTC records copies at four locations in North America (Illinois, Library of Congress, McMaster, Minnesota), and none in the British Isles. He wrote incidental music for some dozen plays between 1682 and 1705 and accumulated the offices of Gentleman Extraordinary at the Royal Chapel (1685) and Groom of the Vestry (1708). The binder Robert Steel (fl. 1668-1711) apprenticed with Samuel Mearne and took possession of his tools after his death in 1686. Gibson, Edmund.
A. & J. Churchill, 1702. First edition (despite a misleading variant issue with an incorrect publication date of 1672) of this important source of ecclesiastical history and canon law. Not a lawyer himself, Gibson, Bishop of London, nonetheless made a significant contribution to English canon law with his landmark Codex juris ecclesiastici Anglicani; the present work marks his first legal effort, predating the 1713 publication of the Codex, and reflects his dedication to research and scholarship pertaining to the Church of England. The DNB notes that the Synodus Anglicana "came to be regarded as definitive."
