1702. Antique print, titled: 'Africa Pars Australis.' - Very decorative antique map of the southern part of Africa by Heinrich Scherer. The map is full of the spurious geography of the period with inaccurately located large lakes, rivers and mountains. The title cartouche incorporates African wildlife and sailing ships add further interest to the map. This map was published in 1702 for Scherer's 'Atlas Novus' . Most of the maps of this work appear to have been prepared between 1699 and 1700 and were engraved by Leonard Hecknaeur, Joseph Montelegre or Matthus Wolfgang. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Heinrich Scherer' after an anonymous artist. Thereafter he obtained important positions as Official Tutor to the Royal Princes of Mantua and Bavaria. It was during his time in Munich as Tutor to the Princely house of Bavaria that his lifetime’s work as a cartographer received acclaim and recognition. Scherer’s world atlas, the Atlas Novus, first published in Munich between 1702 and 1710 and reissued in a second edition between 1730 and 1737, forms a singularly unusual, almost revolutionary work in terms of the development of European mapmaking at the beginning of the 18th Century. The title cartouche incorporates African wildlife and sailing ships add further interest to the map. This map was published in 1702 for Scherer's 'Atlas Novus' . Demosthenes; the whole edited by John Somers, Baron Somers; Monsieur Tourriel (Historical Preface); Earl of Peterborough, George Granvill, Dr. Morland, Dr. Garth, K.C. [Knightly Chetwood], Colonel Stanhope, and Mr. Topham (Translators)
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1702. Leather bound. Very good. Sixteenmo size, 228 pp. Greek orator and statesmen Demosthenes (384-322 BCE) eloquently argues in this book against the reign of Philip II of Macedon; he praises the greatness of Athens and advocates resistance of Macedonian rule over the Greek states. Through these orations, Demosthenes demonstrates his merit as a rhetorician, with "his steadfastness of purpose, his sincerity, his clear and pungent argument, and his severe control of language" (n. b., quote from the website of Harvard University). This volume includes a prior owner bookplate from General Philip Honywood (ca. 1710-1785), owner of the Markshall estate and member of the British House of Commons from 1754 to 1784; the Markshall estate was granted to the Markshall family in 1163 and passed through many hands before it was purchased by the Honywood family in 1605. ___DESCRIPTION: Full marbled brown leather, the spine with four raised bands, decorative and ruled borders and lettering in gilt, decorative borders blind-embossed to the edges of the boards, all edges speckled red; sixteenmo size (6.25" by 4"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-222. Tasteful prior owner armorial bookplate belonging to Philip Honywood (mentioned above) on the front paste-down endpaper. ___CONDITION: Volume is very good, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, and the interior is clean and bright; some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, to the edges of the boards, and to the corners, corners are gently bumped, some rubbing to the joints and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francofurti ad moenum: impensis Friderici Knochii, typis Martini Jacqueti, 1702. First edition, 4to, pp. [18], 140, 147, [3]; decorated initials, elaborate woodcut head- and tail-pieces throughout; somewhat later half art vellum and paste-paper covered wooden boards, a little chipped and soiled with negligible spotting and browning of text. With the late 19th-C. bookplate of Haverford College mounted to the front pastedown. Two parts in one, the first consisting of the polyglot in double column; the second, a gathering of 43pp. of notes in Hebrew, 11pp. "Buxtorfius in Clave Maforae," and from pp. 55-147, a Glossarium Linguarum Orientalium Octuplex: Hebraicum, Chaldaicum, Syriacum, Samaritanum, Arabicum, Aethiopicum, Persicum, et Rabbinicum...(with separate title-page) by Andrea Othone. The text, largely derived from the Walton Polyglot (1655-1657) covers the first four chapters of Genesis, and is extremely interesting typographically in its use of exotic types for the eight oriental scripts it utilizes.
