HOBBES, Thomas.
London: for Andrew Crooke, 1651 [but actually c.1695-1702?] - Folio in fours (325 x 199 mm). Contemporary mottled calf at some time neatly rebacked with the original decorative gilt spine laid down, early 19th century green morocco label, red speckled edges. Armorial bookplate (on verso of letterpress title) of Sir Simon Harcourt, first Viscount Harcourt (1661?-1727), lawyer and politician, solicitor-general under Queen Anne; early 19th century armorial bookplate of Harcourt on front pastedown, possibly that of Field Marshal William Harcourt, 3rd Earl Harcourt (1743-1830). Front joint partially split but sound, head of spine chipped, small wormhole through blank lower margin of first two gatherings, scattered foxing, one or two gatherings browned, a good wide-margined copy. Engraved allegorical title page, folding letterpress table. First edition, third state, of one of the most famous books of the 17th century: "This book produced 'a fermentation in English thought not surpassed until the advent of Darwinism'" (Pforzheimer quoting DNB). This is the so-called "Ornaments" issue. "The true first edition of the English Leviathan is the so-called 'Head' edition (the name of this and the other early editions is taken from the printer's devices which appear on the title page), published in April or May 1651. Although three editions bear the date 1651, it seems that only one edition was actually published in that year. [Noel Malcolm] argues that the 'Ornaments' [edition] dates from 1695-1702 on the basis of publishing data" (Glen Newey, The Routledge Guidebook to Hobbes' Leviathan … [Click Below for Full Description]

LISTINGH, Nicolaas.
Bierens de Haan 2784-2786; Cat. NHSM, p. 329; cf. v.d. Aa IV, p. 162. Rare and interesting work on dyke construction, illustrating the continuing battle of the Dutch against the sea. On April 5 1702, the dyke between Amsterdam and Muiden was breached (see plate 1). The Amsterdam advocate Nicolaas Listingh designed a new construction for the dyke to prevent the sand being washed away by the pounding of the waves. Listingh proposed the construction of partitions that were placed in oblique angles. Each partition consisted of a row of piles driven into the ground. The oblique corners would break the battering of the waves and prevent erosion. Among the 6 engravings in the first work is a view on Muiden by Stoopendael from De Zegepraalende Vecht . In the second work, Listingh describes another device, a so-called "sea forcer," aimed to break the waves before they hit the dyke. The large folding plate (59 x 49 cm), depicting this construction, is engraved by Stoopendael. Listingh defends his construction on the grounds that it is cheaper and more effective than the other proposals. The final four pages contain a letter by Listingh on dyke construction. Bookplates with text "Majorat Meuselwitz" on inside front cover; some browning and staining; plates 1,4,5 with minor tears on folds where they are attached to book with some restorations.

Lovely map of Europe featuring only geographical information of mountains, rivers and forests, by Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. He produces maps that remove political boundaries, borders and place names, replacing them with the revolutionary concept for the period of showing the Mountains and forests in physical relief with all of the major waterways and rivers systems clearly depicted. Scherer's Atlas forms an important milestone in the development of scientific and thematic cartography, providing a remarkable and revolutionary alternative vision of the World in showing only its major physical and topographical features. The large, elaborate title cartouche is surrounded by wildlife, sea monsters abound in the seas, a bear and fox are shown in Greenland. Copper engraving, in very good condition. Monaco Munich 357 232
