A Amsterdam, Chez Nicolas Viollet, 1702. Title printed in red and black. 108 unnumbered leaves. Small 4to. Later half marbled calf, marbled boards, corners somewhat bumped, short split in front joint at foot, small damage at foot of spine. Conlon, Prélude, 11055; not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; not in INED. First edition, very rare, containing the letters 6 through 31. After the title-page is an 'Avertissement', followed by a 'Sommaire des Lettres provinciales, depuis la première, jusqu'à la vingt-cinquième' of two leaves containing the summaries of the first 8 letters and a part of the ninth, lacking whatever was published further, followed by the 'Sixième Lettre du Marchand de Province, &c' upto the 'Trente-et-unième Lettre Provinciale'. From the summary we can see that the first letters were published in 1699, and the 31st letter is dated October 31, 1701. Apparently the first six letters were published as 'Lettre du marchand de Province, .', with the 7th letter the title becomes 'Lettre Provinciale .' All letters have 4 leaves. They all deal with commerce and trade, finance and financial politics, religion and religious conflicts, and politics.This is possibly a collective edition of separately issued letters with a specialy printed title-page. The piece is very rare: the BN (l'Arsenal) has a copy with the first six letters, but containing 22 letters only, the letters 23-31 being absent. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Melton, Edward
Amsterdam, 1702. [4],495,[7]pp. plus nineteen copper plates and engraved title. Elaborate woodcut letters and decorations. Quarto. Contemporary vellum. Scattered tanning and light foxing. Very good. Second edition. Sabin calls this a reproduction of the first edition of 1681, with a new preface. "Who this Melton was, is an unsettled problem. His travels in the West Indies relate partly to the buccaneers. The chapter on New Netherland is made up from Van der Donck and A. Montanus. All the natural productions of the country are described, and the names given in the Indian dialects of Guyana, with occasional observations on the pronunciation of the words.The text is in Friesic Dutch.Several of the plates are by the celebrated Jan Luiken, and are among his best productions; one of them is a view of the Cohoes Falls in the Mohawk river" - Sabin. Melton also claimed to have travelled around the world, and the bulk of the book relates to those possibly apocryphal adventures. SABIN 47473. JCB (3)I:25. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 702/129. [Click Below for Full Description]

Mather, Cotton
London: Thomas Parkhurst, 1702. Seven parts. [32],38,[2],75,[2],238,[2],125- 222,100,[2],88,118,[2]pp. plus double-page map. Without errata leaves, as usual. Folio. Modern calf, spine gilt, leather label. Preliminary leaves and final fifty pages of text lightly dampstained in upper margin. Light foxing and soiling. Very good. The first edition of what Streeter calls "the most famous American book of colonial times." Mather's opus is an indispensable source for the history of New England in the 17th century, both for its biographies and its history of civil, religious, and military affairs. Much of the book's value rests in its incomparable wealth of detail regarding daily life in early colonial New England. David Hall has referred to it as "a mirror of the 1690's," the decade in which most of it was written. Far from being a dull chronicle of events, the MAGNALIA... is full of lively biographical pieces, vivid descriptions of the times, and many surprising sidelights. It has been mined by all modern scholars of social history for its unsurpassed view of New England at the end of the 17th century. The map, which depicts New England, Long Island, and eastern New York, has been labeled by cartographic historian Barbara McCorkle as "the first eighteenth-century general map of New England." It was probably adopted from A NEW MAP OF NEW ENGLAND. NEW YORK. NEW IARSEY. PENSILVANIA. MARYLAND. AND VIRGINIA, likely composed by Phillip Lea in 1680. This copy contains an otherwise unrecorded issue point not noted in any references. In the 5B signature the verso of leaf 5B2 and re … [Click Below for Full Description]

The seven books are comprised of an early history of New England, short sketches of the lives of governors and ministers, the history of Harvard, Puritan modes of worship, instances of “Illustrious, Wonderful Providences” in New England, accounts of various afflictions visited on New England, the Salem witch trials in which he played a pivotal role, the escape of Hannah Duston, and also a wealth of puns, poems, sermons, and anagrams. HUYGENS (Christiaan);
« The argument of the book is very methodically set forth and its earnestness suggests that Huygens did indeed assign a very high degree of probability to these conjectures. In the Copernican world system the earth holds no privileged position among the other planets. It would therefore be unreasonable to suppose that life should be restricted to the earth alone. There must be life on the other planets and living beings endowed with reason who can contemplate the richness of the creation, since in their absence this creation would be senseless and the earth, again, would have an unreasonably privileged position » (DSB VI, 611). Ex-libris Charles Lacour. Bon exemplaire.

Printed for Bernard Lincott [i.e. Lintott], London 1702 - In two parts. [2], 152, 288pp, [16]. Recent black cloth, lettered in gilt. Very minor wear to extremities. Recent bookplate of the Bath Municipal Library to FEP, with their occasional embossed stamps throughout, lightly browned, wormed throughout, trails primarily confined to margins though touching text at times with occasional loss of characters. The first translation into English of Marie Catherine d'Aulnoy's (1650/51-1705) Memoires des avantures singulieres de la cour de France (1692). There are four editions recorded for 1702. No priority has been established. All are scarce, with this edition printed for Bernard Lintott being no exception, ESTC records copies at four locations in North America (Illinois, Library of Congress, McMaster, Minnesota), and none in the British Isles. Amsterdam, Georges Gallet 1702 - in-4, [41] ff. n. ch. [Click Below for Full Description]
