The finely engraved, hand colored title cartouche decorates the map which identifies towns such as Astrakan, Eriwan, Isphahan, Samarkand, and Cabul, and shows trade routes. Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Homann Heirs' after an anonymous artist. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Homann Heirs'. Following the long period of Dutch domination, the Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. The Homanns produced a Neuer Atlas in 1714, a Grosser Atlas in 1737, and an Atlas Maior with about 300 maps in 1780. They also issued a special Atlas of Germany with full sized plans of principal cities, school … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, titled: 'Africae dei Mater Alicubi Nota & Haec Ibidem Benefica.' - Scarce map of Africa, most of South America, Caribbean and south of Europe, by H. Scherer, printed in ca. 1702 (dated 1699) for Scherer's 'Atlas Novus' (1702-1710). While this map is primarily focused on Africa, it also covers most of Europe, the Arabian Peninsula, the South Atlantic and most of Brazil and the Caribbean Islands. The Christian theme of this map of Africa is boldly presented in the graphic illustration of a Jesuit and a native African kneeling before the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The map itself is a fine example of the state of geographic knowledge (or lack thereof) at the beginning of the 18th century. Heinrich Scherer was a professor of mathematics in Munich and a devout Jesuit. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Heinrich Scherer' after an anonymous artist. Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) was a Professor of Hebrew, Mathematics and Ethics at the University of Dillingen until about 1680. Thereafter he obtained important positions as Official Tutor to the Royal Princes of Mantua and Bavaria. It was during his time in Munich as Tutor to the Princely house of Bavaria that his lifetime’s work as a cartographer received acclaim and recognition. Scherer’s world atlas, the Atlas Novus, first published in Munich between 1702 and 1710 and reissued in a second edition between 1730 and 1737, forms a singularly unusual, almost revolutionary work in terms of the development of European ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cf. J.
