Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
This is a very decorative and interesting map of the Middle East covering the biblical regions from the Black and Caspian Seas through most of the Arabian Peninsula. The map concentrates primarily on the geographical features with only a few important place names. Paradisus is located on the Euphrates River. A variety of wild animals (including a unicorn) and sea monsters fill the map. At sides are scenes of Eve offering the apple to Adam and the expulsion from the garden. Heinrich Scherer was a devout Jesuit and many of the maps and plates in his atlas emphasize the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. Copperplate, with fine later hand coplour, very good condition.

[BRUSSELS - PHARMACOPOEIA]. [JOCQUET, Joannes, and others].
Anet (1 copy); Blake, p. 348; Daems & Vandewiele, p. 81 (1 copy); STCV (2 copies); Wellcome IV, p. 357. Rare fourth edition of the Brussels pharmacopoeia which is a word-for-word reprint of the third edition of 1702, which with the exception of a few small changes, was a re-issue of the second edition of 1671. Brussels had begun discussing plans to establish a Collegium Medicum ca. 1605, but failed to do so. A 1636 plague gave city magistrates the impetus to compile a pharmacopoeia, however, and they commissioned four leading city physicians (Joannes Jocquet, Paulus de Hullegarde, Ludovicus Fabri and Joannes De Lau, not mentioned on the title-page, but acknowledged by name in the preliminaries) to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia, which appeared in 1641. No apothecaries were officially consulted in the compilation of the Brussels pharmacopoeia, reflecting the growing status of physicians and declining status of apothecaries. Amsterdam had produced the first official pharmacopoeia in the Low Countries in 1636, based in part on Valerius, but the Brussels physicians chose to take the 1638 Paris Codex medicamentarius Parisiensis as their principal model. With 1793 owner's inscription. Binding heavily worn and back hinge cracked. Lacking the frontispiece and with some spotting throughout and small waterstain in the outer margin of pp. 131-135; nonetheless a good copy.

HUYGENS (Christiaan).
« The argument of the book is very methodically set forth and its earnestness suggests that Huygens did indeed assign a very high degree of probability to these conjectures. In the Copernican world system the earth holds no privileged position among the other planets. It would therefore be unreasonable to suppose that life should be restricted to the earth alone. There must be life on the other planets and living beings endowed with reason who can contemplate the richness of the creation, since in their absence this creation would be senseless and the earth, again, would have an unreasonably privileged position » (DSB VI, 611). [Click Below for Full Description]

DELISLE, Guillaume.Engraved by Liébaux, Jean Baptiste.
Paris: Guillaume DeLisle, Quai de l'Horloge a l'Aigle d'Or . 1702 - Copper engraving. Original outline colour. Size: 61.5 x 47 cm. (24 x 18½ inches) Very good condition; both bottom margins have marks slightly affecting the image. Guilliame Delisle (1675-1726) is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. He adopted entirely new principles in cartography and set about making a thorough reform in that subject. Delisle recognized that the new methods of measuring by scale and of marking the places were very valuable for cartography; with this help he therefore produced a new and more accurate picture of the world. This beautiful map of the British Isles is extending west to east from Kerry to Oldenbourg and north to south from The Shetland Islands to Normandy, coloured by region. Fantastic title cartouche at top left, decorated with fish, birds, horses, fishing nets, with Neptune above and water below, secondary cartouche with five scales at lower right.
