The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England,

Oxford: printed at the Theatre,, 1702–03–04. begun in the year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contributed thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion thereof by the King's blessed Restoration, and Return upon the 29th of May, in the Year 1660… [Together with] The Life of Edward Earl of Clarendon…Written by Himself. Folio (385 x 235 mm), 3 volumes, skilfully rebound period style in half brown calf over marbled paper boards, blind-tooled spines with red lettering-pieces, red speckled edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Clarendon by White after Lely in vols 1 and 3, large copperplate vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre on each titlepage, engraved head- and tail-pieces and initial letters throughout. A handful of leaves in volume 1 with marginal dampstaining, customary dustmarking here and there, without the portrait of Clarendon in volume 2 but a good tall set. First edition. Clarendon's History of the Rebellion has been described as "the most sophisticated and finely balanced history yet written in English" (ODNB). The book, long delayed after Clarendon's death, is a magnificent Oxford production and a superb example of Oxford typography, adorned with finely engraved embellishments by the University engraver, the Dutchman Michael Burghers, "one of the handsomest books hitherto produced in England" (Barker, The OUP and the Spread of Printing, p. 28).

THE SPANISH RULE OF TRADE TO THE WEST=INDIES: CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF THE CASA DE CONTRATACION, OR INDIA-HOUSE; ITS GOVERNMENT, LAWS, ORDINANCES...TO WHICH ARE ADDED, TWO COMPLEAT LISTS: ONE OF THE GOODS TRANSPORTED OUT OF EUROPE TO THE SPANISH WEST-INDIES; THE OTHER OF COMMODITIES BROUGHT FROM THOSE PARTS INTO EUROPE

London: Samuel Crouch, 1702.. [24],367,[9]pp. Contemporary paneled calf, gilt leather label. Text lightly tanned. 19th-century bookplate on front pastedown. Very good. An abridged, English, translation of Veitia Linaje's NORTE DE LA CONTRATACION DE LAS INDIAS OCCIDENTALES (Seville, 1671). A most detailed account of Spanish trade practices in the West Indies, describing the organization of the courts, administration of the Armada, work of the missionaries, and the slave trade, as well as general information on the state of commerce in the West Indies through the 17th century. Translated from the original Spanish by Capt. John Stevens, who states in the preface: "I have not, in the Englishing of this work, confin'd my self to the Rules of Translation, which would oblige me neither to add or diminish, for I have done both...." Following the preface, Stevens has inserted extensive lists of commodities exported to Europe from the Spanish West Indies, as well as items imported from Europe to the colonies. One of the interesting manuscript inscriptions on the first preface page reads: "This Book was given me by Joseph Severance in the Bay of Honduras on ye Last day of July and in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and forty - who was his friend & well wisher - David Nickerson." An appealing volume. * Processus: only edition; Constitutiones: sixth and final edition. The Processus is a comprehensive guide to the laws that apply to European soldiers. It is a digest of positive law and conventions established by treaty. Each point is illustrated with a case study. The work reflects both the greater destructive power of eighteenth century armaments and the Enlightenment-inspired movement to civilize the rules of military engagement. "Von der Section und Inspection des Coerpers," its eleventh chapter, is especially interesting. An early example of medical jurisprudence [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CITY OF NEW-YORK.[blank] ESQ; MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW-YORK. TO THE SHERIFF, CONSTABLES, AND OTHER HER MAJESTYS OFFICERS WITHIN THE SAID CITY, GREETING. KNOW YE, THAT I HAVE LICENSED.[blank] OF THE CITY AFORESAID, [blank] TO SELL WINE, BEER, BRANDY RUM, SYDER, OR ANY OTHER SORTS OF STRONG LIQUORS BY RETAIL.

[New York: Printed by William Bradford, -1714]. 1702 - Broadside, 7 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. Light foxing. Very good. An unrecorded printed blank form for a retail alcohol sales license in New York city, produced for the Mayor's office during the first two decades of New York printing. The final lines of the form date the printing to the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14), during which time William Bradford was the only working printer in New York. William Bradford (1663-1752) was the "pioneering printer of the English middle colonies" (DAB) - the first in both Pennsylvania and New York. He originally settled in Pennsylvania, where he began operating a printing press in 1685 and a bookstore in 1688. Various controversies led to significant legal hassles there, including the temporary seizure of his types and paper in 1692, and in 1693 Bradford answered a call to come to New York and print the acts of assembly and other official papers for the colonial council. No records have been found locating an alcohol license form printed in New York earlier than the present document, making this the first known example of its kind. DAB II, pp.563-64.

[New York: Printed by William Bradford, -1714]. 1702 - Broadside, 7 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. Edge toned, lightly foxed. Very good. A very rare early 18th-century printed blank form for sea vessels, likely from the press of William Bradford, New York's first printer. The completed form would certify that the holder had cleared customs for a journey, recording the name of his vessel and its tonnage, arms, crew, origin, and itinerary. The only recorded copies of this imprint were found as endpapers (one free, one pastedown) in a volume owned by Michael Zinman and now held by the Library Company of Philadelphia. Both the Zinman and present copies were discovered bound with volumes of early New York laws in Bradford bindings, making it clear that they were products of his press. Further, the final printed lines date the document to the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14), during which time Bradford was the only printer in New York. NAIP mzrecordcopy154.
