Francis Bacon: a bibliography, 245. ** Francis Bacon, whose letters are published in this book, was an English politician, scientist and philosopher. Francis Bacon, son of a renowned jurist, was born in London in 1561. He studied at the University of Cambridge and Gray's Inn. In 1576 he interrupted his studies to travel abroad with the English ambassador in Paris. The sudden death of his father in February 1579 necessitated Bacon's return to England. Starting in 1584 he took his seat in parliament and in 1596 he became a Queen's Counsel. King James I knighted him in 1603. In 1613, Bacon was finally able to become Attorney General. His public career ended in disgrace in 1621. After falling into debt, a Parliamentary Committee of the administration of the law charged him with corruption. The viscount was sentenced to a fine of £40,000, which was remitted by the king. He was also committed to the Tower of London for the duration of the king's pleasure. In the end, his imprisonment lasted only a few days and he narrowly escaped being deprived of his titles. It has been argued that Bacon was in fact innocent of the bribery charges; Bacon himself said that he was forced to plead guilty so as to save King James from a political scandal. He said: 'I was the fairest judge there was in England these last fifty years. When the book of all hearts is opened, I trust I shall not be found to have the troubled fountain of a corrupt heart. I know I have clean hands and a clean heart. I am as innocent of bribes as any born on St Innocents Day.' Sir Francis Bacon died in 1626." - See The Divine Name. *** " Goldsborough hall passed to the Wharton family (in 1646) when Sir Richard's daughter, Elizabeth, married the Hon Philip Wharton. Her sister married Colonel Anthony Byerley of Middridge Grange. Their son Robert Byerley married Elizabeth and Philip's daughter, Mary Wharton in 1695. Robert Byerley was MP for County Durham and represented Knaresborough nine times between 1697 and 1710. He was a soldier and fought at the Battle of Buda 1686 and the Battle of the Boyne 1690. The story goes that Robert Byerley captured a fine brown horse at the Battle of Buda, the Byerley Turk, which is the eldest founding father to all thoroughbred horses. The Byerley Turk was buried at the Hall in 1706." - See Wikipedia . **** Full title reads: "Letters of Sr Francis Bacon, Baron of Verulam, Viscount St. Alban, and Lord High Chancellor of England. Written during the reign of King James the First. Now collected, and augmented with several letters and memoires, address'd by him to the King and Duke of Buckingham, which were never before published.         Some memorandums of matters of fact, relating to the original and preliminaries of a suit in Doctors-Commons, between Sir Hugh Everard baronet, promoter, and John Oswald, vicar of Much-Waltham in Essex, which are prov'd either from the depositions of witnesses, or from authentical papers exhibited in this cause, the copies whereof are here produc'd ...... With some reflections upon them, wherein are some things of publick and general concern to the clergy of England, which are with all humility submitted to the consideration of the Convocation now assembled. By J.O

London, printed in the year MDCCII [1702]. 4to., (2) + 55 + (1)pp., lower margin of title rather soiled, contemporary ink signature of 'Dr Jane'> in upper margin, bound in 19th century quarter calf over marbled card covers. A good copy. First edition: rare. ESTC & OCLC together find copies outside Great Britain only at Yale Law + UCLA (William Andrews Clark). Lambeth Palace has, uniquely, a 2nd ed. of 1709. A fascinating case of an evident serious breakdown in relations between a country clergyman and both his patron and his parishioners. Sir Hugh Everard (ca. 1654-1706), 3rd Baronet of Much Waltham in the County of Essex seems - according to the Rev. John Oswald's perhaps partial account - to have wanted to get rid of Oswald from the living. Everard charges Oswald with a menu of serious malpractices which he considers provided sufficient evidence for the Vicar to be ejected from the parish. Among the allegations reference is made to the refusal of administering the Holy Sacrament to about 80 parishioners, and financial bullying (demanding unpaid tithes including those owed by Sir Hugh Everard himself). Oswald notes that on one occasion the vicarage itself was attacked at night by 'confederates' of those who wanted the vicar driven out. When all this failed, Oswald alleges that he was then subjected to a blizzard of unsubstantiated accusations, all untrue. 'That the said petition proving ineffectual to get their ends of J. Oswald, and turn him out of his living, they proceeded farther to draw up articles against him, charging him with the crimes of adultery, fornication, (tho' neither of these is deposed by any of the witnesses), incontinency, drunkenness, and several neglects of his ministerial office, as vicar of the parish of Much-Waltham'. The case eventually went to the Court of Arches, the costs of £40 being paid by a general meeting of parishioners. Oswald's defence rested in part on the legal rights of the clergy - which he argued he had properly relied on - and the improper levying of legal costs on to parishioners. But he also adds the human plea that it was grossly unfair for him to be the subject of a 'narrow and diligent search into the privacies of his life for the space of fourteen or fifteen years past'. It was, Oswald declared, 'contrary to the common interest of humane society, that such rigid enquiries should be made into men's lives, especially into clergymen's whereby their reputation is expos'd to all the slanderous reports of ill-minded and indigent persons'.

(Kyd does not seem to have been aware of these earlier books.) The anonymous author mentions Sheppard's book but dismisses it, claiming that it "extends not to the fortieth part of the matters relating to Corporations (v). He is correct; his book is much more extensive than Sheppard's and is more an analytical treatise than a handbook. This was clearly the author's ambition: "I have not only shewed the nature of Corporations, and by what words erected, but the several sorts thereof. And.

New essay's on trade, wherein the present state of our trade, it's great decay in the chief branches of it, and the fatal consequence thereof to the nation (unless timely remedy'd) is considered, under the most important heads of trade and navigation

London, H. Walwyn, 1702. 8vo., (16) + 128pp., with a folding table between pp.104 & 105, contemporary plain ruled sheep, patches of general surface wear, neatly rebacked and labelled. A very good crisp copy with good margins. First edition. Kress 2335. Goldsmiths 3857. Hanson 130. Not in Einaudi, Mattioli, or Amex, however. Sir Francis Brewster (d. 1704/5), an Irish merchant and writer on trade, had been lord mayor of Dublin in 1674. In 1695 he had published Essays on Trade and Navigation>, which clearly demonstrated his concern for the problems of Ireland - that England was fleecing Ireland and treating his country oppressively and unfairly. 'His New Essay's [sic] on Trade>, 1702, make him rank among those pessimistic authors who constantly foresee the decline of trade. Nevertheless he insists upon the necessity of allowing the exportation of wool, England being not able to work up two-thirds of its own, and forced 'either to Burn or Export it'. He recommends manufactures as a means of employing the poor. 'I think him a great Man that employs Twenty Men at his Looms, and Five Hundred Spinners, and wonder we have no more such in Parliament'. He recognises the dangers of the money projects, and of the stock-jobbing mania of his age. In all other respects his mercantilist views are the same as in his first essays, and only his considerations on the advantage of a union between England and Ireland, with many statistical abstracts, may be considered as valuable.' [Dr. Stephan Bauer in Palgrave (1926)>, I, pp. 178-9].

An Abridgment of Mr. Baxter's History of his Life and Times. With an Account of Many Others of Those Worthy Ministers, who were Ejected, after the Restauration of King Charles the Second. Their Apology for Themselves and their Adherents; Containing the Grounds of Their Nonconformity, and Practice as to Stated and Occasional Communion with the Church of England, And a Continuation of their History

Printed by S. Bridge - . Hardcover. Published 1702. 701pp. Contemporary speckled-panelled-calf, raised bands, slight chipping to spine & light edgewear but a good copy overall. Bookplate on inside cover. Edmund Calamy, earned his place in literature as a biographer of non-conformity. He firstly assisted Mathew Sylvester in editing Baxter's own account of his Life and Times in folio. He followed this with the present work which is far better known and respected. It's publication, particularly the content of the ninth chapter on the ejected ministers, produced a storm of protest and many pamphlets appeared discrediting the work. Very rare. . . . . .         Broadside. Begins: "Petition for the Laird of Kilravock and others the vassals of Lovat

[Edinburgh Folio. [1] p.. ca. 1702] The tenants of the Lovat estate petition for a delay in producing the writs and securities of their holdings, as the protracted dispute between the Lovat family and the infamous Capt. Simon Fraser of Beaufort (who attempted a forced marriage to the family's heiress, young Amelia Fraser, before successfully kidnapping and wedding her mother, the dowager Lady Amelia Murray) has left them in a sorry state regarding the payment of creditors. Not only does this broadside touch on the common perspective of a great contemporary scandal, but it is of interest for its scarcity as well. => No holdings are listed by WorldCat, ESTC, or NUC Pre-1956. Excellent clean condition, with two small sewing holes at inner margin, one very small spot of foxing, and ink traces from printing process to outer edge. Tipped onto a leaf of 19th-century paper.

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM JOHN ABEEL TO EDWARD HYDE, VISCOUNT CORNBURY AND COLONIAL GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK, REGARDING PAY FOR ARMY PERSONNEL]

Albany. June 2, 1702.. [2]pp. plus integral address leaf. Folio. Old fold lines. Light soiling, some bleed through of ink. Later ownership ink stamp on verso of address leaf. Very good. Albany official Johannes Abeel (signed as John Abeel) writes to colonial governor Edward Hyde regarding payments made according to Hyde's orders. Abeel (1667- 1711) was an Albany native who held various local offices, including mayor of Albany; in 1702 Abeel was serving as recorder for the city, which is likely why he was responsible for overseeing the dispersal of payments. Hyde was colonial governor of New York and New Jersey from 1701-08, during which time he proved an unpopular administrator both in the colonies and at home in England. ^Abeel's letter lists those persons to whose companies he made payment, writing (the errors are his own): ^"I have payd according your Excellencys order to Matthew Shanke Lieut. of Col. Richard Ingoldsby's companee four weeks subsistance commencin from the ninth day of May to the sixth day of June according to the role deliver to mee, for 3 lieut, 3 sergt, 3 corprall, 2 drums & 85 private men the sum of ninty pound ninten schill. & eight pens; and to Henry Hollind lieut of Capt James Weemes compn. for 1 capt, 2 lieut, 3 sergt, 3 corprll., 2 drums & 88 privat men the sum of ninete five pound seventeen schill. & 2 pens...." ^He includes a postscript note in which he indicates that his wife wishes both the governor and his lady well. ^A scarce and early colonial document dealing with administrative affairs and defense on the frontier.

      - The first edition of the first work on the language of the Moxos, and the only one for 200 years; printed in Lima, in its contemporary binding. N.d. [1702]. Lima. Joseph de Contreras. In 12mo (150 mm x 95 mm). 1 [blank] + 16 pp. + 664; 202 + 1 ff. Contemporary Peruvian limp vellum, spine lettered in ink, head of spine slightly chipped; perished stamp on front board. A fine copy in entirely genuine condition; purchase note on front pastedown “Sold by AAS”. First edition. Marban’s is a very rare and singularly important vocabulary of the Moxos language, the first of its kind and the only one for almost two centuries. The catechism, present herein, is usually lacking. The Arte is notable both as an important linguistic piece and an early South American imprint. "The language of the nation of the province of 'los Moxos,' in Bolivia, South America. Their language is related to the Maipure. This is the only work on the subject" (Sabin). The book is undated, Sabin records the date as 1701, while Medina believes it to be 1702; quite possibly, Medina is more accurate. A manuscript note on the front free endpaper of the present copy indicates it was purchased by the noted London firm, Bernard Quaritch, Ltd., in 1918, while a stamp on the front pastedown gives evidence it was later sold by the American Antiquarian Society.

Complete with errata, approbation and permission du Roi. Calf - backed marbled boards; a fine copy. First edition. Disappointed with Fuchard?s work, Bunon was the first to perform specialized odontological research as well as to address such issues such as the development and care of children?s teeth, and dental hypoplasia (caused by childhood diseases). For the prevention of tooth decay, he writes that after caries, dental tartar is the most potent enemy to the vitality of the teeth. In addition, he includes the first dental pharmacopeia. Of special interest was Bunon?s proposal to substitute the word legs for that of dental roots. Bunon (1702 - 1748), a French dentist, was an ardent champion of conservative dentistry and prophylaxis and succeeded in converting many medical men to his views. ?Anyone who takes the trouble of reading Bunon?s works attentively cannot help admiring his depth of insight, his spirit of observation, his exquisite clinical sense, and his ingenuity?

Amsterdam, Mortier, 1702.. 2 Bde. 9 Bll., 348 S.; 3 Bll., 386 S., 1 Bl. mit einigen Vignetten in Kupferstich. 1 Kupfer-Frontisp., 179 (teils gefalt, teils doppelblattgr.) Kupfertafeln und 7 gefalt. Tabellen. Gr.-8°. - Pierre Surirey de Saint-Remy drafted a full inventory of artillery rules and a techniques in his Memoires d'artillerie. He noted the smallest details of military life, from the calibre of cannonballs to the distribution of munitions among the troops. The many plates illustrate various weapons and show shops or arsenals.
