Mexican Gulf, Caribbean, antique sea chart - Pieter Mortier 1700.

Prijs: € 1.650,-.

Manuscript Journal in English Titled:] An Arrêt for Establishing a Council of Commerce, Paris, [29th June] 1700.

1700 - Ca. 1700. [ii], 11, 196 pp. Manuscript journal written in a neat and easily legible cursive script in brown ink on laid paper, with the ownership inscription "Sam Browns - 1735." Handsome period dark brown elaborately gilt tooled panelled full calf with gilt title label. Rebacked in period style, some very minor foxing but overall in very good condition. This English translation of the 1700 Paris Arrêt of the King's Council of State for Establishing a Council of Commerce, contains petitions and reports presented by the deputies of the Council of Trade in France to the Royal Council. This manuscript almost certainly pre-dates the printed bilingual version in French and English which was published in Paris in 1701. The main articles contained include: "A memorial concerning the Guinea Company, the commerce of the French colonies in America, the present state of the islands, which the French possess there, & the means of preserving & extending their trade in those parts; with remarks upon the restraining some branches of commerce to certain ports & upon exclusive companies, as also on farms certain commodities, particularly the farms of tobacco and sugar" (this article describes the French colonies in the West Indies including French Guiana, Grenada, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint-Kitts, Saint Croix, Dominican Republic, Dominica, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint Martin with details on their size, number of colonists, slaves, conditions of the soil and main settlements and crops also being given). Another article describes French commerce with the Levant and why Marseilles "alone has the privilege of trading thither." Other articles describe how French trade can be restored with Spain and the Northern Countries. While one other important issue discussed is the "scarcity of gold & silver bullion, & the exportation of coin out of the kingdom." France's King Louis XIV of France wanted to restore, improve and expand trade after the Nine Years' War had been concluded with the Treaty of Ryswick and so this Arret represents a comprehensive study of the state of French trade and how these goals could be accomplished.       [Paris]. Mounted on paper. Very good condition. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with a tiny library stamp to the mounting paper (The stamp is NOT on the Map). . [Paris], c. 1700. Original copper engraved maps. 15.5 cm wide x 13 cm high. Mounted on paper. Very good condition. From a wonderful collection of Maps from an old english library (South Shields) - with a tiny library stamp to the mounting paper (The stamp is NOT on the Map). Nicolas de Fer (1646?-25 October 1720) was a French cartographer and geographer. De Fer was the youngest of three sons of Antoine de Fer, who was also a cartographer. When he was 12, he became the apprentice of Parisian engraver Louis Spirinx, and made his first map, of the Canal du Midi, at the age of 23. After the death of his father in June 1673, his mother Geneviève initially took over the map making company, which had begun to decline. She passed it and the atelier, called Quai de L'Horloge, on to Nicolas in 1687 because of her old age. De Fer was so successful at improving the firm that, in 1690, he became the official geographer to Louis, Dauphin of France. With support from the Spanish and French Royal Families, de Fer also became official geographer for Philip V and Louis XIV, the kings of Spain and France, respectively. Because of this, his maps became Bourbon propaganda, endorsing French King Louis XIV. His business flourished, producing town plans, atlases, wall maps, and more than 600 sheet maps. He made maps of places in Europe and North America, including New Spain, places fortified by Vauban, the Low Countries, and the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1698, de Fer published a map of North America, which included a depiction of beavers building dams near Niagara Falls. Seventeen years later, Herman Moll published a map which plagiarized elements of de Fer's work, particularly the beaver scene. It became known as the "Beaver map". De Fer became the official geographer for His Catholic Majesty in 1720. Two of his sons-in-law, Guillaume Danet and Jaques-François Bénard, continued the company after de Fer's death on 25 October of that year until around 1760. (Wikipedia)

THE DOCTRINE OF INSTITUTED CHURCHES EXPLAINED AND PROVED FROM THE WORD OF GOD

London, 1700. Small quarto. Antique-style calf in period style, by Trevor Lloyd. Text trimmed close, affecting text on some pages and headlines on others, and removing the date on the title imprint. Various owner's ex-libris in manuscript on the verso of the titlepage. Good. Stoddard was one of the liberal Boston ministers who wished to dispute the conservative principles put forth by Increase Mather in his important work, THE ORDER OF THE GOSPEL... (Boston, 1700). Like Benjamin Colman and Thomas Brattle, who had their reply printed in New York, Stoddard found that the Mathers' friendship and influence with the Boston printers of the time prevented him from getting into print there, so he took his publication to London. Only a handful of copies noted by ESTC.

World map - Romein de Hooghe, David Funcke, c. 1700.

"Novissima & exactissima totius orbis Terrarum Tabula" Hand coloured copper engraving from the "Atlas Maritimus Ofte Zee Atlas"'. Published in Nuremberg by David Funcke c. 1700. Size: 48 x 55 cm.David Funcke was a Nuremberg publisher, who commissioned works from Homann. This attractive and ingenious map however, derives from a work by Romeyn de Hooghe 'one of the most accomplished Dutch artists of the second half of the 17th century" that appeared in Frederick de Wit's Atlas. The marginal decoration in this work depicting the four elements of Classical philosophy portrays Fire as a military battle; Air as the heavens ruled by the Zodiac and serenaded by Apollo; Earth as a field being harvested and husbandry; and Water, a sea with Dutch ships and a sputing whale. There are Greek gods presiding from the sidelines of all these scenes: Zeus, Hera, Hades, Persephone, Demeter and Poseidon. The map has two large hemispheres and two smaller, polar hemispheres. There is an outline of an Antarctic continent, which De Wit had left blank.Reference: Shirley 616 (and 444), plate 327.Price: € 7.500,- (incl. frame).

        tulpportretten 18de eeuw.

America Aurea Pars Alter Mundi Auctoribus

Amsterdam, 1700. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. Highly decorative map of North and South America showing California as an island and here with full period hand colouring. This decorative map by the Valk brothers is after a similar map by Carol Allard, first published circa 1696. Cartographically, both Allard and the Valks borrow heavily from the De Wit map of 1675, naming the Great Lakes, showing California as an island and with a Terra Esonis and Fretum Anian in the northwest. Interestingly, the Valks here re-issue the first state of Allard's map, i.e. before the re-engraving of the western Great Lakes and the Mississippi River (based on Hennepin's mapping). In addition, the lower left corner of the cartouche is left blank, whereas in subsequent issues of the Allard map, an inset of New Zealand appears. In the present issue, there are no toponyms on Terra Esonis and the South Pacific is without New Guinea. Cf. Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 724 (discussing the map under the entry for Allard); Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast, 496; Tooley, "California as an Island," 68 in Tooley, The Mapping of America ; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island , 176.

Original copper engraved maps. 16 cm wide x 13.2 cm high. (Wikipedia)
