A Discourse Upon Grants and Resumptions.

London: Printed for James Knapton, 1700. Showing How Our Ancestors Have Proceeded with such Ministers As have Procured to Themselves Grants of the Crown-Revenue And that the Fortified Estates Ought to be Applied towards the Payment of the Public Debts. Octavo (118 x 188mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with raised bands and new red morocco label, edges sprinkled red. Engraved armorial bookplate "Joliffe" to front pastedown. Joints and one corner skilfully repaired, short crack at foot of front cover, last few leaves a little dogeared; a very good copy. First edition. Charles Davenant (1656?1714), a government official and political economist, was from 1678 to 1689 Commissioner of Excise. He produced a steady flow of political and economic writings dealing with aspects of taxation, public debt, monetary and trade questions, foreign policy, and criticisms of Whig policy in general. The present work gives a detailed criticism of the gifting of forfeited land by the crown. Davenant provides historical examples from English and Roman history and individual histories of ministers of state who were impeached for receiving grants. The last section of the book deals with the policy which should be followed in the case of the Irish forfeitures, Davenant arguing that the Irish land should be used for the public revenue.

[12], 458 [2] pp. Illustrated with woodcut head pieces, initials, and tail pieces. Folio, 294 x 193 mm, bound in full nineteenth-century Portuguese speckled calf. Em Lisboa : Na officina de Migvel Manescal, Impressor do S. Officio, da Serenissima Casa de Bragança, & de Sua Eminençia, 1700. First Edition of this extremely scarce work on the persecution and martyrdom of Christian missionaries in Cochinchina, the southern region of Vietnam, as well as the northern provinces of Tonkin, at the end of the seventeenth century. This volume is considered one of the most important European works on Cochinchina from that time period. Jesuit priest Manuel Ferreira arrived in Vietnam in 1694, after having served as a missionary elsewhere in the East Indies since 1658. Ferreira offers a description of the region, including history, local customs, geography, and vegetation, before going on to discuss the establishment of the Jesuit missions. Much of the text focuses on the persecution, imprisonment, and often brutal murders of Christian missionaries who refused to renounce their faith, reporting that men were beheaded while women were thrown to the elephants. He goes on to describe the remarkable resolve of the fearless missionaries to continue making inroads for the establishment of Christian missions in Vietnam. The copy includes the signature of historian Prosepero Peragallo on the title-page, dated "Lisbona, 1875." As common with other copies of this volume, several irregularities in pagination occur, though the text is complete: page 117 is incorrectly numbered 517, page number 270 occurs twice (in place of page number 271), and page 386 is incorrectly numbered 356. Several sections of the text are browned, and there is a small ink spot near the spine fold on page 250. Inscription of "1665" in the margin of page 293. Palau 194164. Cordier, Biblioteca Indosinica 1924. [Attributes: First Edition]

Andreas Otto, Frankfort and Leipzig 1700 - [1],[10],140pp. Modern brown crushed morocco The first German promotional tract for Pennsylvania. Scarce first edition of an important early source on the history of Pennsylvania, written by the founder of Germantown. Pastorius, born in Germany in 1651, formed an acquaintance with William Penn, became a Quaker and helped organize the Frankfort Land Company. Securing 15,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania, he emigrated in 1683 and soon thereafter layed out Germantown, of which he was the principal founder. This epistolary work includes letters written from Pennsylvania to his father describing the region, including its form of government and providing advice to emigrants. In the rear of the work is a printing in German of William Penn's Letter to the Committee of the Free Society of Traders. Pastorius, Winsor writes, was "the most active and intelligent of the first German settlers" and his work "is of great interest, as it contains the views of one thoroughly identified with the German movement to America" (Winsor). This work stands at the beginning a the "Pennsylvania Dutch" culture of Pennsylvania, still a vibrant culture today. European Americana 700/212; Howes P115 "B"; Sabin 59028; Winsor III:502.

Nicolas Pepie, Paris 1700 - [xxiii]+433+[13 table] pages with two folding maps of the Marsianes and Guam. Duodecimo (6 1/2 x3 1/4") bound in contemporary full sheep with red label in gilt spine and five raised spine bands, speckled red end pages. (Brunet 28230, Cioranescu 41783) First edition. Charles Le Gobien was a French Jesuit writer, founder of the Lettres édifiantes et curieuses a collection of reports from Jesuit missionaries in China. It is a major source of information for the history of Catholic missions and life in China in those times. Le Gobien was born at Saint-Malo, Brittany. He entered the Society of Jesus on 25 November 1671. As professor of philosophy and especially while procurator of the Franco-Chinese mission, he sought in a series of papers to awaken interest in the work of Christianizing Eastern Asia. In 1697 appeared at Paris his Lettres sur les progréz de la religion à la Chine. Apropos of Chinese Rites controversy, he published among other things Histoire de l'édit de l'empereur de la Chine en faveur de la religion chrétienne avec un éclaircissement sur les honneurs que les Chinois rendent à Confucius et aux morts (Paris, 1698); and in the year 1700: Lettre à un Docteur de la Faculté de Paris sur les propositions déférées en Sorbonne par M. Prioux. Under the same date there appeared in Paris the Histoire des Isles Mariannes nouvellement converties à la religion chrétienne. The second part, translated into Spanish by J. Delgado, is found in the latter's Historia General de Filipinas (Manila, 1892). In 1702 Père Le Gobien published Lettres de quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus, écrites de la Chine et des Indes Orientales; this was the beginning of the collection soon to become celebrated under the title of Lettres édifiantes et curieuses écrites des missions étrangéres par quelques missionnaires de la Compagnie de Jésus. The first eight series were by Le Gobien, the latter ones by Fathers Du Halde, Patouillet, Geoffroy, and Maréchal. The collection was printed in thirty-six volumes duodecimo (Paris, 1703–76), and reissued in 1780-81 by Fathers Yves, de Querbeux, and Brotier in twenty-six volumes duodecimo, omitting the prefaces. New editions appeared in 1819, 1829–32, and 1838-43. One abridgment in four volumes octavo, was entitled Panthéon Littéraire, by L. Aimé Martin (1834–43). A partial English translation came out in London in 1714. The publication incited the Austrian Jesuit Stöcklein to undertake his Neuer Welt Bott (about 1720), at first considered merely a translation, but soon an independent and particularly valuable collection (five volumes, folio in forty parts) substantially completing the Lettres Edifiantes. This is a history of the Christian missions in the Marianas or Ladrones Islands in the north-western Pacific, the principal island of which is Guam. Reprinted in the text are several letters from early missionaries (Medina, Clain, Sanvitores, &c.). The Jesuit mission was established there by Diego Luis de Sanvitores. Father Le Gobien never visited the Mariana islands but based his account chiefly on the relations and letters of missionaries sent to him from Rome, Spain, the Netherlands etc. Includes a letter by P. Clain about the discovery of the Caroline Islands. Condition: Rebacked with original spine laid down, provenance: Jesuit College library with old stamps to front free endpaper, half title and title page else about very good.         The Historical Antiquities of Hertfordshire

London: Printed for Ben. Griffin et al, 1700. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. 601 p. + index. 37.5 cm. Portrait frontispiece, 33 folding illustrations, 2 maps, 6 single-page illustrations. 500 copies printed. Calf leather with gold and plain impressing. Spine has six raised bands, gold impressing, plain lettering. Spine and hinges repaired, corners reconditioned, boards reshaped, spine label added. Front end papers have ink and pencil notations, "Powell Snell" coat of arms, label residue, clippings pasted in, some dampness stains. Some pages darkened, especially folding illustrations and index. Some foxing throughout but mainly in last pages. Sir Henry Chauncy (1632-1719) used public records and ancient manuscripts to compile his history of Hertfordshire. It took him and his paid team of researchers 14 years to create, after which another five years to print. A lawyer before turning historian, Chauncy was known to dine in the manor homes of the nobility, inspect their picture-galleries, note the improvements in their gardens, home farms and estates, and record them in his history. Arranged by hamlet or "vill", the finished work includes much genealogy, tomb inscriptions, illustrations of manor houses, churches and monuments, as well as facts about the founding of monasteries, churches and vicarages. A well-preserved tribute to both Hertfordshire's first great historian and the county.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Lesage translation. Contemporary binding in full sheepskin blonde. Back with five nerves decorated with boxes and gilded florets. Golden roll on turns and headdresses. Head cap restored, otherwise good copy. (16) 398pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[3 Vols.]

Chez Michel David, Paris 1700 - Three volumes. Pp. [xxxvi], 470, [10] table; [ii], 502, [2] blank, [8] table; [xxii], 570, [4] table. Woodcut printer's device to each title, woodcut ornaments and initials, and several textual figures. Contemporary French mottled calf, densely gilt spine in compartments between raised bands. Minor wear to extremities, but generally a very nice, well-preserved set. First published in two volumes, 12mo, in 1674 and 1675, the present 5th revised edition contains the author's clarifications , Eclaircissements (1678), and a response to M. Regis in a third volume. "Recherche de la Verité" is Malebranche's first and most important work. In it he enunciates his famous Cartesian-inspired philosophy of "Occasionalism", which denies causality to the physical world and any interaction between mind and matter. Instead he posits God as the sole cause of both the material world and our notions of it. To account for the apparent interaction of mind and matter in the act of perception, he argues that God arranges an exact correspondence between our ideas of material objects and the objects themselves, and so it is literally true, as St. Augustine teaches, that "we see all things in God". This ingenious blend of Cartesian dualism and Christian mysticism involved Malebranche in many acrimonious exchanges with Bossuet and the Jansenists, especially Antoine Artaud, who detected pantheistic overtones in his views; but it also won him many supporters, including Leibnitz, and earned him the title of the 'French Plato'. Malebranche later reworked his philosophy in light of his critics and presented it in a more concise and polished form in his "Méditations chrétiennes et métaphysiques" (1683), and his "Entretiens sur la métaphysique et sur la religion" (1688).         Ven Ioannes Palafox Episcopus Angelopolitan et Postea

1700 - A Mexican-school, colonial portrait of Palafox. Eighteenth century. Oil in canvas, some minor flaws, overall very good. 275 mm x 190 mm. A lively portrait of Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600 – 1659), amongst the most influential figures of Mexico in the 17th century; the painting is signed “Franco”, possibly Ignacio Franco, active in Queretaro in the 18th century. Palafox was a natural son to Jaime Palafox, Marquis of Ariza, he studied at the University of Alcala de Henares and Salamanca; in 1639 he is appointed Bishop of Tlaxcala (Puebla de los Angeles), where his efforts on protecting the native population, including his prohibition of converting the natives by the use of force, gained fame and love. In 1642, by command of the King, Palafox deposed Viceroy Diego Lopez de Pacheco Cabrera, himself becoming interim Viceroy during the same year; although a brief period of time, he supported the appointment of creoles to public office, tried to reduce taxes to promote the economy, and favored commerce. Undisputable men of letters, Palafox founded the Schools of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, giving to the later a magnificent library, today called the Palafoxiana. The portrait here presented is after a composition by Franz Regis Goetz: Palafox is surrounded by allegories and emblems, a subject not uncommon under the reign of Charles III of Spain (for example those portraits by Miguel Cabrera and Juan Patricio Morlete), when the beatification of Palafox was under course, promoted by Fray Alejandro de la Concepcion. The iconography of this portrait, as well as others, is closely associated with the Convents of the Discalced Carmelites, who supported the cause for beatification. Palafox is depicted in a medallion portrait, surrounded by a series of emblems and allegorical images, amongst them: to the top left a women with open arms under the Sun and the Holy Ghost –in the form of a pigeon-, the chest with the portraits of Saint John Evangelist and Saint John the Baptist, then follows a personification of the Church with a legend allusive to the construction of the Cathedral of Puebla de los Angeles, then a personification of the Faith, Prudence, and later Santa Teresa de Avila. The medallion is set on top of an open book entitled Anotationes in Epistolas Seraphicae Virgo Santa There[siae].

Amsterdam, Nicolaas ten Hoorn, 1700.3 volumes in 1. 4to. Contemporary vellum with red morocco title-label to spine (spine sl. damaged; endpapers renewed). With woodcut title vignette, engraved title-page by Cornelis Huyberts, folding map and 7 engraved plates (1 folding) by Jan Lamsvelt. (8),219; 136,(6) pp.Second Dutch edition. - New and very much altered edition of the first edition of 1678. The whole second part is entirely new and intended for a continuation to the first. Also the plates are new, they are nicely done by Jan Lamsvelt. 'Little is known with certainty about Exquemelin (1645- ca.1707) author of one of the most important sourcebooks of seventeenth century piracy. Born about 1645, it is likely that Exquemelin was a native of Harfleur in France, who on his return from buccaneering settled in Holland, possibly because he was a Hugenot. In 1666 he was engaged by the French West India Company and went to Tortuga, where he stayed for three years. There he enlisted with the buccaneers, probably as a barber-surgeon, and remained with them until 1674. .. perhaps no book of the seventeenth century in any language was ever the parent of so many imitations and the source of so many fictions' (CNMM IV, p.51). This famous and popular book, The buccaneers of America, is the prototype of an entire literature of books on pirates and buccaneers in all languages up to the present day. 'The classic Buccaneers of America is the prime, and indeed almost the only comprehensive source of information for pirate activities in the seventeenth century' (Howgego p.357). - With bookplate of the John Carter Brown Library: Duplicate released and small stamp of the Brown University on title-page. - Age-browned otherwise a fine copy of the scarce Dutch edition.Cat. NHSM II, p.878; Sabin 23469; Muller, America, 580; CNMM IV, Piracy & Privateering, 180; European Americana IV, p.371; Hill 577-579 'classic of all buccaneering books'.
