Very rae map of Greece, after Sanson, published in Naples by Paolo Petrini. Little is known of Paolo Petrini, the Neapolitan mapmaker. He is known to have published the rare Atlante partenopeo (1700-1718), and this equally rare set of wall-maps. Much of his work appears to have been based on contemporary French mapping, notably the works of the Sanson family and Nicolas de Fer. That he was not merely a copyist, however, may be seen from his map of Asia, which also demonstrates the use of more up-to-date sources where available.         Fine large half-length engraving of this important choreographer and dancing master by François Chereau (1680-1729) after Robert Tournières (1667-1752)

Paris: [ca. 1700]. Pécour is depicted seated at a table with an open book of dances in Feuillet notation. 419 x 294 mm. to platemark. Slightly browned, most noticeably to mount; minor remnants of tape to verso. In very good condition overall. Credited with 120 original choreographies, most for the theatre but many for social dancing, "[Pécour] was one of the finest dancers working under the celebrated royal choreographer Pierre Beauchamp. He is said in one source to have made his début as a dancer in a repeat performance of Lully's Cadmus et Hermione in 1674. When, on Lully's death in 1687, Beauchamp left the Opéra, Pécour was appointed in his place. He gave up dancing in about 1703 but he held the post of ballet-master and choreographer at the Opéra until his death. His tutelage produced such outstanding dancers as La Fontaine, Subligny, Guiot, Prevost and Menese among the women and Blondy, Ballon, Dumoulin and Marcel among the men. He is credited with changing the 'S' figure of the Minuet to a 'Z', an innovation that helped keep the dancers in a proper relationship to each other and to the figure."         Brussels a large and beautiful City in the Dutchy of Brabant, Subject to the Queen of Hungary,.

Artist: Rapin de Thoyras Paul ca ; date: ca1700 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 39,5 x 48; - description: City map of Brussel with desriptin of all important streets and buildings. The City of Brussels is the largest municipality of the Brussels-Capital Region, and the de jure capital of Belgium. The City of Brussels covers most of the Region's centre, as well as northern outskirts where it borders municipalities in Flanders. The City of Brussels was simply defined, being the area within the second walls of Brussels, the modern-day small ring. As the city grew, the surrounding villages grew as well, eventually growing into a contiguous city, though the local governments retained control of their respective areas.; - vita of the artist: Paul de Rapin de Thoyras ( 1661 ? 1725), sieur of Thoyras (and therefore styled Thoyras de Rapin), was a French historian writing under English patronage. The son of Jacques de Rapin, an avocat at Castres (Tarn), he was educated at the Protestant Academy of Saumur, and in 1679 became an advocate, but soon afterwards joined the army. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and the death of his father led him to move to England; but, unable to find work there, he went on to the Netherlands where he enlisted in a company of French volunteers at Utrecht, commanded by his cousin, Daniel de Rapin. He accompanied William III to England in 1688, and during the Williamite war in Ireland he took part in the Siege of Carrickfergus and the Battle of the Boyne, and was wounded at the Siege of Limerick (1690). Soon afterwards he was promoted to captain; but in 1693 he resigned in order to become tutor to the Earl of Portland's son. After travelling with the boy, he settled with his family (he married Marie-Anne Testart in 1699) in Holland, first at the Hague, then, to save money, at Wesel, in 1707.

He is credited with changing the 'S' figure of the Minuet to a 'Z', an innovation that helped keep the dancers in a proper relationship to each other and to the figure." Meredith Ellis Little in Grove Music Online.. Pécour is depicted seated at a table with an open book of dances in Feuillet notation. 419 x 294 mm. to platemark. Slightly browned, most noticeably to mount; minor remnants of tape to verso. In very good condition overall.

With a small woodcut illustrations on title-page, numerous fine woodcut head- and tailpieces, and a letterpress folding table. Contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine with the monogram ("BB") of the Bibliotheque Bignon, gold-tooled board edges.

Barbier II, col. 259; Einaudi 4196; Kress 5376; Sabin 31236; for the monogram: Olivier 870, no. 8. First edition of a study on the profits of maritime trade and commerce by Pierre André O'Heguerty (1700-1763), a Breton economist and maritime expert. The work is largely based on his own experiences, as he, since his marriage, owned a large coffee plantation on the island of Bourbon. During his stay there, O'Heguerty started to collect documents on maritime commerce. When his wife died in 1745, he returned to France, and published several books on this topic. The essay can be seen as a plea to the French Government, to promote maritime trade and commerce with the French colonies, instead of allowing foreigners to take away the profits. The binding contains the monogram "BB". Olivier shows this tool as the monogram of the prolific author Jean Paul Bignon, Abbé de St. Quentin, royal librarian and assiduous book collector. Bignon, however, died in 1743, eleven years before the publication of the present book. So it must be one of his descendants, who are also known book collectors.Internally in very good condition. Some minor damage to the hinges and the mottling has resulted in some damage to the boards, but the bindings is still firm and the tooling on the spine still clear.

Pharmacia Antverpiensis Galeno-chymica.Antwerp, Joris Willemsens I, 1660 [engraved title-page 1661]. With engraved title-page by Petrus van Caukercken after Abraham van Diepenbeeck With: [JOCQUET, Joannes, and others]. [engraved title-page:] Pharmacopoeia Bruxellensis: .Brussels, Jan Mommaert II, 1641. With engraved title-page by Cornelius Galle the elder after Anthonis Sallaert. 2 editions in 1 volume. 4to. Brown calf (ca. 1700?).

      - Daems & Vandewiele, Noord- en Zuidned. stedelijke pharmacopeeën, pp. 62-63 (5 copies) & 70-71 (7 copies); STCV 12879911 (5 copies incl. 1 defective) & 12879890 (4 copies, incl. 1 lacking title-page). First (and in the case of Antwerp only) editions, in Latin, of the first and only official pharmacopoeias for Brussels and Antwerp, containing hundreds of medicinal recipes and throwing a great deal of light on 17th-century medical practice in the Low Countries. The Antwerp work's separate part with the title "Selectiora chymica" shows the rising importance of chemistry in the production of medicines. In 1624 the magistrates of Antwerp set up a Collegium Medicum, which did declare that medicines were to be prepared following Cordus until further notice. Brussels had begun to discuss plans to establish a Collegium Medicum already ca. 1605, but failed to do so. A 1636 plague gave city magistrates the impetus to compile a pharmacopoeia, however, and they commissioned four leading city physicians to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia, which appeared in 1641. In 1659 the Antwerp Collegium Medicum decided to produce their own official pharmacopoeia. With a 5-line presentation inscription on the flyleaf from the principal compiler of the Antwerp pharmacopoeia, Michiel Boudewijns to St Bernard's Abbey in Hemiksem, south of Antwerp, undated, but clearly between 1661 and Boudewijn's death in 1681. With an occasional correction in an early hand, an inscription at the end of the Brussels work by Godefridus Bouvaert (1685-1770), and the bookplate of Oscar van Schoor (1873-1936) on pastedown. Second work browned with occasional small marginal tears or spots, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is rubbed, with some mostly superficial cracks in the spine and hinges, but remains structurally sound. Two important pharmacopoeias with a remarkable provenance.

In Notitiam Ecclesiasticam Africae Tabula Geographica

Artist: L Isle de /Covens & Mortier Guillaume (d) ; issued in: Paris; date: (d)1700 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 48 x 64; - description: Map shows Marocco, Algeria and Tunesia with Spain, Balear Islands, Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily; - vita of the artist: Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to recently explored continents of Africa and the Americas.Like many cartographers of these days, De L isle did not travel with the explorers and elaborated the maps mostly in his office. The quality of his maps depended on a solid network that would provide him first-hand information. Given the family?s reputation and his own, De L isle had access to fairly recent accounts of travellers who were coming back from the New World, which gave him an advantage over his competitors. Being a member of the Académie, he was also aware of recent discoveries, especially in astronomy and measurement. When he could not confirm the accuracy of his source, he would indicate it clearly on his maps. For instance, his Carte de la Louisiane shows a river that the baron of Lahontan claimed he discovered, but no one else could validate it, so Delisle warned the viewer that its actual existence was in doubt. De L isle 's search for exactitude and intellectual honesty entangled him in a legal dispute in 1700 with Jean-Baptiste Nolin, a fellow cartographer. Noticing Nolin had used details that were considered original from his Map of the World, De L isle dragged Nolin in court to prove his plagiarism. In the end, Delisle managed to convince the jury of scientists that Nolin only knew the old methods of cartography and therefore that he had stolen the information from his manuscript. Nolin's maps were confiscated and he was forced to pay the court costs. The scientificity of the work produced by the De L isle family contrasted with the workshop of Sanson. While Sanson knowingly published outdated facts and mistakes, De L isle strived to present up-to-date knowledge. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Slavery

, [circa 1700s]. [circa 1700s]. Rare Middle Passage Slave Shackle used primarily on Slave Ships to confine the Africans to the lower deck. Measuring 16 inches from end to end, it has excellent patina. Fine condition.Deaccessioned from a museum. From the letter of authenticity: "Middle Passage Slave Shackle: Circa 1700's...This is to certify that the Slave Shackle accompanying this certificate is authentic as described, and was carefully researched through all available sources of information. This is an historical piece of history from the African Slave Trade during the 1700's..." Also includes provenance from Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, where this item was displayed for 3 years."For weeks, months, sometimes as long as a year, they waited in the dungeons of the slave factories scattered along Africa's western coast. They had already made the long, difficult journey from Africa's interior--but just barely. Out of the roughly 20 million who were taken from their homes and sold into slavery, half didn't complete the journey to the African coast, most of those dying along the way...The captives were about to embark on the infamous Middle Passage, so called because it was the middle leg of a three-part voyage-- a voyage that began and ended in Europe. The first leg of the voyage carried a cargo that often included iron, cloth, brandy, firearms, and gunpowder. Upon landing on Africa's 'slave coast,' the cargo was exchanged for Africans. Fully loaded with its human cargo, the ship set sail for the Americas, where the slaves were exchanged for sugar, tobacco, or some other product. The final leg brought the ship back to Europe...The slaves were branded with hot irons and restrained with shackles...:---from PBS.orgExceptional provenance which consists of a copy of a certificate of authenticity from the Slave Relics Museum - The Center for Research and Preservation of the African American Culture as well as a return receipt from the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, PA where these shackles were on loan for a display in their museum.

I] Tatiani Oratio Ad Graecos. Hermiae Irrisio Gentilium Philosophorum Ex vetustis Exemplaribus Recensuit (.) Wilhelmus Worth. (Angebunden:) [II] Sibylla Capitolina, Publii Virgilii Maronis Poemation; interpretatione et notis illustratum a S.L. [von Petro Daudé].

[I]: Oxoniae, e Theatro Sheldoniano (Oxford: Sheldon); [II]: (item = Amsterdam) 1700; 1726. - [I]: (14), 212, XXVII, 213-252 Seiten. [I]: Graesse VI, 41. [Hardcover / fest gebunden]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
