      - Noribergae, Michaellianis, 1700. 8vo (19.1 x 15.9 cm). [xx], 437, [iii] pp.; 25 engraved plates [AND] Strassburg, S. Paulli, 1681. Engraved title page, [lviii] pp, including dedication leaf with coat of arms, portrait of Paulli, 87, [xii] pp., and two large, double-folded engraved plates, related to the making of tea. Contemporary vellum with script titles in a neat old hand on the spine. Edges speckled red.l Two rare works bound together. Johann Christian Volckamer's work, which includes plant species from the Cape region, in the rare first edition. The second work, on tobacco and tea, is by the Danish botanist and professor of anatomy and surgery Simon Paulli (1603-1680) . This is in the second, revised edition. It is rare as well. Arents: "It concerns the safety of all Europe that the Augean stables be cleaned and be rid of the brutalizing, barbarous, filthy American medicine and, also, that restraint be put upon the importation of that new and uncertain medicine, tea". After page 368, page numbering continues with 336 [SIC = 339]-350, 315 [SIC = 351], 352-407. So the actual number of pages is 437. A very nice copy without the usual browning.       n.p., Florence 1700 - Vignette of Machiavelli's portrait on title. Separate dated title pages to all parts except the Historie fiorentine which begins the volume. Dell'arte della guerra contains typographical figures depicting military formations and a double-page woodcut illustration depicting an army camp, and a manuscript table of contents following L'asino d'oro. Contemporary half vellum and marbled boards, manuscript titles on spine. Despite some browning and damp-staining, an excellent copy with an ownership inscription dated 1801 on the paste-down. I. Early edition of the political works of Machiavelli, which include: --Gli otto libri delle Historie Fiorentine. This particular publication is called the Edizione Testina, named after the author's woodcut portrait on all the half-titles. Five variant editions are known, all showing 1550 as the (fictitious) year of printing on the title page, but which in reality are seventeenth-century forgeries. The Testina edition constitutes an interesting bibliographic case because of the particular difficulties of identification for the presence of variants, omissions and rearrangements. Machiavelli's masterpiece, Il Principe, is the work with which he "founded the science of modern politics" by analyzing Cesare Borgia's much-admired "mixture of audacity and prudence, cruelty and fraud, self-reliance and distrust of others" (PMM). Machiavelli firmly believes in the separation between politics and ethics, as each have different objects and goals. The term "Machiavellian" has come to mean a ruthlessness and immorality behavior in politics. He stated that total freedom from the religious power was the principle of a healthy State. The work was written in 1513 but was not published in Rome until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. Il Principe exerted an enormous influence across disciplines and nations. The work soon became a practical examination of how "power" functioned. It was first placed on the Index of Prohibited Books, in the banned absolutely category, in 1559. The list of rulers who read and used the work is very long: "Henry III and Henry IV of France were carrying copies when they were murdered; Louis XIV used the book as 'his favorite nightcap'; an annotated copy was found in Napoleon Bonaparte's coach at Waterloo."Machiavelli (1469-1527) is known as the father of modern political theory. Born in Florence, he was a diplomat for 14 years in Italy's Florentine Republic during the Medici family's exile when the city was run by Girolamo Savonarola, a Dominican friar. No official records of Machiavelli's life appear until 1498, immediately after the fall of Savonarola's government, when he would have been 29. The Florentine Republic had been reinstated, and Machiavelli was appointed as secretary of the Second Chancery, a position in which he coordinated relations with Florence's territorial possessions. As the "Florentine secretary," he had opportunities to meet and observe many of the major political figures of the period. When the Medici family returned to power in 1512, Machiavelli was dismissed and briefly jailed. II. First edition of a little known political work. Written in the form of a dialogue in twenty-five inquiries (Consultationes), in which Vanitas (Vanity) and Veritas (Truth) discuss issues concernin

Costelyk medicijn boek voor alderhande gebreeke des mense lighaam. [Zeeland?, ca. 1700]. 4to. Manuscript medicine book in Dutch, written in dark brown ink on paper in a Latin hand, with close to a thousand medicinal recipes and medical instructions. With 17 engraved prints pasted on the endleaves, some signed by the publishers Barent Velthuysen or (Dancker?) Dancker(t)s, including Bible illustrations, Ajax and Ulysses, and two elegant ladies (one standing and one dancing). There are also several pieces of an engraved decorative border. Contemporary vellum.

A very extensive manuscript medicine book, containing nearly a thousand recipes for medicines and medical instructions for household use. They include syrups, pills, powders, waters, salves, oils and other medicaments for both internal and external use against everything from bad breath, worms, burns and wounds to epilepsy, rabies, plague and scurvy. It also gives instructions for removing splinters and bullets, interpreting urine (pp. 336-340) and other medical care, including help for pregnant women, childbirth and children. Most of the recipes use common herbs, honey, wine and other ingredients readily available to all, but some include items that were not indigenous, such as cinnamon and tobacco (p. 301), as well as antimony (quite dangerous if the dose is too high), one uses pearls, coral and crabs' eyes (p. 207) and another even scrapings from pieces of elephants' tusks. The anonymous author gives several clues to his identity. He notes that he practiced his art for many years in the cities of Aardenburg, Sluis and the surrounding villages and countryside (in southwestern Zeeland). The book contains a 19-page alphabetical index, but 28 pages of additional recipes have been added following it, presumably after the rest was written, and a few slips with additional recipes or notes have been loosely inserted, some near contemporary, others perhaps a century later. The leaf before p. 1 (with the drop-title on its verso) and 3 of the last text leaves are detached or nearly detached, as are several of the endleaves with engravings, but the manuscript is otherwise in good condition. Some of the endleaves are tattered at the edges and some of the engravings show bits of white chalk(?). The binding is slightly soiled, its sewing somewhat loose and the cloth ties tattered. An extensive and interesting recipe book for household medical care.

Universa Theologia ad mentem doctoris subtilis

1700 - Acquaforte, 1700 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Engraving, 1700, signed on the plate, in the lower right. Beautiful example, printed on two sheets printed on two sheets of contemporary laid paper, joined at the center. In excellent condition. Theological thesis page, engraved by Jacob Hermundt and Francisco Person. These served initially as a poster to announce the disputation and as a printed invitation for special guests, but later as the "program" for those in attendance, and finally as "trophies for the defendants and dedication pages for the patrons"; as early as the seventeenth century, however, they also became collector’s items. The philosophical or theological content of the thesis, which could very well omitted completely in the presentation copy, was frequentely reduced to a list of propositions that were printed, in a box or at the bottom margin of the page, which sometimes was composed of several sheets of paper. These thesis page, shows at center a portrait of Joseph I of Augsburg, and in the top, his father Leopold I. On each lateral side, are the box or cartouches with some propositions of the thesis. A very rare work, unknown to the literature. Dimensioni 432 665mm [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Witches Sabbath. Assembly of Witches and Demons. [Les Sabbats]. Est-ce enchantement, ext-ce une illusion? [Is it bewitchment, is it an illusion?].

Claude Gillot, c1700-1722., [France:] - Fine impression, lower text in French, cropped just outside borders. A beautiful piece. Original print, Les Sabbats, a witches sabbath, with, in the middle, a horned male figure (The Devil) presiding over the torture of two male figures, tied to a spinning device; on the left, two female figures on a broom, an elegant woman mounted on the skeleton of a four-legged creature, and a stag-horned man mounting a lion-headed horse with Death seated, a figure burning the tortured remains, demons, dragons, serpents and more about the scene. Very rare. We locate no other copies for sale. The French text roughly translates as = Do I believe my fear, my eyes, or my reason? Of the Negromant, and the three sorcerers. Of the fury of the Sabat prompts avant couriers. The crew, the cries, the sacrilege ardeur. In these iniquitous places proclaim terror. Here the master actor of the tragic scene, Give the furious Demons a show. The cruel torment of quetques matheureux. What does a magical troop look like? Poisons, potions, mirrors, sinister instruments, Serpents, dragons, insects, ossemens, And all that Hell has produced of mysteries. Is here by a deadly accord; The earth trembles and opens? and what comes of it still? Of the monsters I say, and others of chimera. Witchcraft as illusion was prominent in the work of early eighteenth-century French artist Claude Gillot (1673-1722). A teacher of Watteu known for his rococo inventiveness and interest in the comic and the grotesque, Gillot created several etchings of sabbt-like scenes before his death in 1722. Gillots etching entitled Est-ce enchantement, est-ce une illusion depicts skeletal animals and monstrous shapes, althrough here the artist adds cadavers and tortured bodies. But in spite of the pervading sense of gruesome horror and death, the accompanying verses suggest Gillots fundamental question: are these terrors anything more than a terrifying illusion? [-see Davies: Oxford Illustrated History of Witchcraft and Magic]. Of all Gillots work on witchcraft and Les Sabbats prints, we find this particular one to be rarer than others, as well as appearing far more gruesome and intricate. A beautiful piece and quite rare.         Totius Tartariae nova descriptio geographica Anno 1700

This interesting map covers Tartary, a great tract of northern and central Asia stretching from the Caspian Sea and the Ural Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. The depiction of Japan is very unusual with a large, distorted northern island of Hokkaido (Iedso) connected to Honshu by a narrow isthmus. By Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta.published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The map is finely engraved with mountains, forests and cities with vignettes of animals and encampments. In the top right corner is a vivid illustration of a marauding horde of Tartar warriors attacking a Chinese wagon. Copper engraving, in very good condition. Shirley (BL Atlases) T.SHER-1a #103.

This engraved world map showing primarily the sailing routes from Europe to Asia, including a rather optimistic route to Japan via the Northeast Passage. It is possible that the routes shown on the map were those used by Jesuit missionaries. The unusually formatted map has Australia in the center. The galleons located in the corners of the map symbolize the voyages of the French to New France, the Dutch to the East Indies, the English to New England, and the Spanish to Mexico and Peru. As shown, Scherer portrays California as an island and other newly charted lands, such as Australia and New Zealand.
