D.B.I., XXV/pp. 585-9.         An essay upon the probable methods of making a people gainers in the balance of trade. Treating of these heads, viz. Of the people of England. Of the land of England, and its product. Of our payments to the publick, and in what manner our ballance of trade may be thereby affected. That a country cannot increase in wealth and power but by private men doing their duty to the publick, and but by a steady course of honesty and wisdom, in such as are trusted with the administration of affairs. By the author of The Essay on Ways and Means.> The second edition.

London: James Knapton 1700 - 8vo., (16) + 204pp., with the 6 folding tables as called for, contemporary mottled calf with an old rebacking, small patches of surface wear to joints, later endpapers. A very good sound copy. Wing D.310. Kress 2216. Goldsmiths 3651. Mattioli 887. First published in 1699, this is perhaps Davenant's most coherent treatise on political arithmetic. His front-rank position in the history of economics is mainly based upon his insight into the importance of quantitative arguments, the use of political arithmetic, and his contributions to the theories of money, international trade and public finance. His failure to produce a coherent theoretical system is reflected by his flirtations with both mercantilism on the one hand and almost a free-trade position on the other. The present work includes much in the area of what might now be called 'applied' economics - population studies, marriage, immigration, family incomes, poverty, home consumption and so forth.

Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Apud Fredericum Haaring, et Davidem Severinum Bibliopolas [through 1700], 1699. Vellum. Very Good. First Leiden Edition of the Dialogo (Fourth Latin Edition, Fifth Edition overall) of Galileo's celebrated defense of the Copernican view of the solar system, bound with bound with the First Latin Edition (third overall) of the Two New Sciences. Two volumes in one. 4to: [16],494,[26]; [6],282(misprinted 826),[4], with copper-engraved portrait of Galileo, additional engraved title page (after Stefano della Bella), dated 1700, showing Aristotle, Ptolemy and Copernicus discussing the heliocentric and geocentric models of the solar system, and numerous woodcut illustrations. In addition to Galileo's texts, this edition includes (following conclusion of the Dialogo) the introduction to "Astronomia nova" (pp. 446-454), in which Johannes Kepler argued in favor of heliocentrism based upon his ten-year-long investigation of the motion of Mars; the Latin translation of Paolo Antonio Foscarini's "Epistola R.P.M. Pauli Antonii Foscarini, Carmelitani, circa Pythagoricorum, & Copernici opinionem de mobilitate terræ, et stabilitate solis: et de novo systemate seu consitiutione mundi" (Letter concerning the Opinion of the Pythagoreans and Copernicus about the Mobility of the Earth and Stability of the Sun, and the New Pythagorean System of the World, pp. 455-487), in which Foscarini defends the Copernican theory against charges that it conflicted with Scripture, and "The judgment of the Cardinals against Galileo and his abjuration (pp. 488-494), first printed in Riccioli's "Almagestum," in 1651. Period full vellum over boards, titled in manuscript to spine, edges speckled black, plain period end papers. A handsome, unsophisticated copy, rare in this condition. Vellum soiled and stained, scattered minor foxing, some thumbing to final few leaves, but a tight, clean example. PMM 128 (Dialogo first edition) & 130 (Discorsi). Carli and Favaro 395. Dibner 8 and 141. Norman 858. First Leiden Edition of the Dialogo (Fourth Latin Edition, Fifth Edition overall), bound with the First Latin Edition (third overall) of the Two New Sciences. Galileo's discoveries with the telescope (described in Sidereus nuncius, in 1610), confirmed his belief that the Sun is the center of the solar system and Earth a planet, as Copernicus had argued. But by 1616, the Inquisition had pronounced Copernican theory heretical, and Galileo was admonished not to “hold or defend” it. Then in 1624, Maffeo Cardinal Barberini, friend, admirer, and patron of Galileo for a decade, was named Pope Urban VIII, and granted Galileo permission to write a book about theories of the universe but warned him to treat the Copernican theory only hypothetically. That book, the Dialogo (Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic & Copernican), was first published, in Italian, in 1632. In it, Galileo gathered together all the arguments (mostly based on his own telescopic discoveries) for the Copernican theory and against the traditional geocentric cosmology put forth by Ptolemy and Aristotle. (The Dialogo takes the form of a discussion between a spokesman for Copernicus, one for Ptolemy and Aristotle, and an educated layman for whose support the other two vie.) Reaction against the book was swift. The pope convened a special commission, which recommended that the Inquisition bring a case against Galileo. Galileo confessed to having overstated his case and was condemned to life imprisonment, though he never spent a day in a dungeon; the Dialogo remained on the Inquisition's Index of prohibited books until 1822. The two new sciences with which the second book deals are mechanics and motion (kinematics). Together, they underlie modern physics, and the Two Sciences is considered the "first modern textbook in physics" (Dibner), "not only because it contains the elements of the mathematical treatment of motion, but also because most of the problems that came rather quickly to be seen as problems amenable to physical experiment and mathematical analysis were gathered together with suggestive discussions of their possible solution." (Dictionary of Scientific Biography) Newton claimed he derived the first two laws of motion from this book. N. B.         A massive Spanish manuscript choir book in Latin

An early eighteenth century Spanish Graduale Romanum, or Roman Gradual (the second of two volumes), with thick wooden boards and iron fittings, containing music and text for the proprium missal (proper of the mass), including a Peruvian credo and with an index to both volumes at the end arranged mostly alphabetically under five headings for the introits, graduals, tracts, alleluias, offertories and communions. Such choir books were produced at this large scale so that they could be set on a lectern and the entire choir could gather around them to sing. Their style changed little from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century. The combination of a mass for the Franciscan Copertino and the Peruvian credo may suggest that the choir book came from Spanish Franciscans, even though there are also masses for Jesuits and a Portuguese credo.  [Spain? : circa 1700, with additions to at least 1767]. An extremely large manuscript choir book (75.5 x 57.5 x 15.5 cm) in black and red ink on sheepskin parchment, with plainchant music (5-line staves in red measuring 56 mm with square and diamond notes in black, mostly with a c-clef on the middle or second line, sometimes an f-clef or both, sometimes with a b-flat or f-sharp) and the text in a large rotunda gothic hand (about 16 mm in height) in black with headings and some other words in red, 3 three-line (about 25 cm) and 11 two-line (about 18 cm) elaborately decorated initials in 2 or more colours, mostly in red and blue, but some with other colours and gold, and hundreds of 1-line (about 8 cm) decorated initials (black or black and yellow interlaced gothic; red, blue or duplex red and blue so-called Lombardic, sometimes with white interior decoration; and a few others); eighteenth century (?) black half goatskin with black sheepskin sides, over beechwood (?) boards (the boards 17 mm thick!), on 6 double cords (hemp ropes?), each board with 2 long iron anchor/catch plates running across the entire width (all 4 the same, but with 2 iron clasps anchored on the front and catching on the back), each with 2 iron bosses, a 5th boss in the centre of the board, thin iron strips covering the seam between back and sides, iron edge-pieces at the head and foot and the upper and lower parts of the fore-edge, the anchor/catch plates and edge pieces secured with countersunk flat-head screws, the thinner plates with round-head iron pins; with a blank front pastedown and four leaves of a similar gradual (perhaps formerly part of this one) used as free endleaves at front and back and as the pastedown at the back; and with parchment-covered cloth tabs, labelled in manuscript; "l49" [= 155] ll. plus 5 endleaves (1 blank and 4 manuscript), including pastedowns; some leaves with tears, mostly repaired at an early date, some with the text retouched on the repair, some minor abrasions and an occasional heading in the older leaves shaved, but most leaves in good condition. The binding has numerous small worm holes in the boards, but is also generally good. Most of the leaves 10-102 show a consistent style (as do their 2- and 3-line initials in red and blue) and are probably the oldest part of the book. Some parts may have been added soon after and others probably still later. The text ends halfway down 149r and the index begins immediately on the same page, continued on 149v. This index covers the texts of volume 2 only up to leaf 135 and the leaves after 102 are irregularly covered. The leaves 135 to 149 contain five credos following the text of the Roman Catholic mass: "Credo de Piedra" (1 36r-138v), "Credo Constantino" (138v-141r), "Credo Portugues" (141r-143r), "Credo Peruano" (143r-145v, a Peruvian credo) and another without title but with "Monja" or "Monia" written in the margin (146r-149r). The front pastedown is blank, but the other four endleaves, appearing to come from a similar choir book, are numbered 131-133, [134], and include the introit, gradual, tract, alleluia and communion for the feast of Corpus Christi (some of the slips used to repair the leaves of the main text also appear to come from a similar choir book). These also appear to be among the oldest leaves and may match 10-102 in style. The foliation is irregular, with no 127 and with the leaves between 130 and 146 (which differ in style from those before and after) numbered [130 bis], [130 ter], [130 quater], 131-133, 133 [bis], 134-135, [135 bis], 134 [bis], 135 [ter], 136-145. The index has no reference to a leaf 127, suggesting it did not begin a new part of the text. lt appears to have been cut out, leaving a stub, yet only one-and-a-half words appear to be lost: leaves 124-130 contain two versions of the Credo from the Roman Catholic mass, the first (124v-126v) ending "Et vitam venturi secu[li. Amen.]" and the second (128r-130v) complete. Perhaps leaf 127 was almost entirely decoration and was cut out to be displayed or sold. The three unnumbered leaves between 130 and 131 clearly do not match any of the others and are probably the latest in the book. Their 5-line staff is smaller (45 mm), their text is written in a broad-bibbed pen rendering of a roman printing type, and they are added to the end of the index in a different hand than the rest. They contain masses for four saints who were canonizer in the years 1746 to 1767, so they must have at least been made after 1767 and could be even later. The four are Saint Camillus de Lellis (1550-1614) from Naples, who established Ministers of the infirm or Camillians; Gerolamo Emiliani (1486-1537) from Venice, who established the Somaschi; Iosé de Calasanz (1557-1648) from Aragon, who established Piarists; and Giuseppe da Copertino (Cupertino) (1603-1663), a Franciscan from Apulla (the heel of the Italian boot). The Franciscans were the most active missionaries in Peru from the 16th to the 18th century, though many were martyred and many of their missions were destroyed by uprisings in 1742. These are followed by masses for Saint Philip Neri, canonizer 1622 (133v-134v) and the ]esuit Saints Ignatius de Loyola (134) and Francis Xavier (135). Volume 1 was apparently less extensive, for the index records leaves up to 135 for volume 2 but only up to 79 for volume 1. The large size required a whole skin for each leaf, so that the book had to be assembled from separate leaves rather than quires of bifolia, though the compiler generally arranged it so that the facing pages of an opening are either both skin side or both flesh side.

Beautiful and detailed watercolour drawing, drawn in brown ink with grey and brown washes. The fortifications are rendered in a very careful and detailed way. The view is probably drawn from the peninsula Floriana, part of the city of Valetta, with the fortification Manoel at left and the fortification Tigné in the centre, both with the flags of the Order of the Knights of St. John flying on the towers and ships in full sail leaving the harbour for the open sea. Above the border at the centre is written "Malta".Cut down to the border (except for a tab left at the top for the title), but in fine condition, with only a couple small spots in the sky.

Augsburg: Johann Ulrich Krauss, 1700. Oblong 4to (240 x 282 mm). 18 plates: engraved title and 17 numbered etchings, engraved captions in German, by Melchior Küsel after Baur. Watermarks: 1) hunting horn, 45 x 32 mm., lettered below A I F; 2) serpent (95 x 37 mm.) coiled around an anchor(?) with leaf-shaped upper escutcheon lettered MD(?). Most in very good impressions. Some marginal soiling or foxing, a stain to title from erasure of shelfmark, crease marks to a few plates, plate 6 just shaved at foremargin. Modern morocco-backed boards (bowed). Provenance: Carl Gustav Schmidtsche Bibliothek, purple ink-stamp on title with ink shelfmark no. 494 (old attempts to erase the same number elsewhere on title-page causing small stain).*** only separate edition of a suite of delightful landscape etchings after the miniature painter and engraver J. W. Baur, etched by Melchior Küsel, Augsburg engraver and goldsmith, and published by his son-in-law Johann Ulrich Krauss, the preeminent Augsburg print publisher of his generation. The etchings show mountainous or riparian vistas from Italy, the Alps, the Pyrénées, and Dalmatia, dotted with castles, waterfalls, grazing sheep, etc., most painted from life by Baur on his travels to and from Italy in the 1630s. These sensitive small format landscapes and views, which Baur painted habitually on vellum and with which he came to be associated, are depicted as subjects in their own right or dominate foreground scenes of, for example, Neapolitan peasants playing ball, hunting parties, mythological or religious subjects such as Daphne and Phoebus or St. Leopold's discovery of his wife's veil (on which site he founded Klosterneuburg), or even a pair of unidentified strolling angels. This is one of at least five different thematic tirages à part published by Krauss of selected plates from Baur's and Küsel's Iconographia, a four-part collection of Baur's work, encompassing a Passion suite as well as a selection of his landscapes, emblems, garden views, etc., first published (also by Krauss) in 1670-72 and reprinted four times thereafter, with the last edition appearing in 1702. The plates appeared in part 3 of the Iconographia; for this issue the imprints were re-engraved within the image, the plates were renumbered, and the captions, in letterpress in the Iconographia, were engraved (and occasionally shortened) in the lower blank margins of each plate. I locate no copies in the US; OCLC and KVK list 4 copies in German libraries. In N. America there are copies of the Iconographia (various editions) at Harvard, Univ. of Louisville, Getty Center, the Univ. of Laval, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. VD17 1:073094G (16 plates only); Hollstein German 22:476-490; cf. Thieme-Becker (Seeman reprint) 3:89-90 and 22:73-4.

Boekverkopers, 1700. Early Reprint. Vellum. Fine. Profusely illustrated edition of Cats's complete collected works, first published in 1655. Two folio volumes bound in one, each separately paged and signed, and each with additional engraved title page bearing a portrait of the author, as well as sectional title pages with engraved vignettes. [28],666 [i.e. 662: 183-184 repeated and 343-348 omitted],[10]; [18],390,[6],393-608,61,[1] pp, with full-page portraits of the author and of Anna Maria Schurman, three double-page plates, and more than 400 superb copper-engraved half- and quarter-page plates (most from the original designs of Adrian van de Venne), numerous tailpieces of bouquets, and historiated initials. Recent period-style full vellum binding by Fitterer, mustard lettering piece decorated and lettered in gilt, end papers renewed. An exemplary example in a magnificent vellum binding, occasional spotting and minor marginal browning internally, else fresh and bright with deep rich impressions of type and plates. Cats was a Dutch statesman and writer of emblem books, a type of popular, seventeenth-century literature consisting of woodcuts or engravings accompanied by didactic verses pointing a moral or presenting an ethical concern often related to love and marriage. (Dutch artists of the Golden Age, including Vermeer, used such books as inspiration for motifs in their paintings and prints.) The sources upon which Cats draws for this combination of emblem literature and love poetry are chiefly the Bible and the classics and occasionally Boccaccio and Cervantes. His first book, Sinne-en minnebeelden ("Portraits of Morality and Love") contained 96 emblematic engravings with text in Dutch, Latin, and French, each emblem with a threefold interpretation, expressing what were for Cats the three elements of human life: love, society, and religion. Perhaps his most famous emblem book, written in a more homely style than his earlier works, is Spiegel van den ouden en nieuwen tyt ("Mirror of Old and New Times"), with 128 emblematical engravings accompanied by quotations, many of which have become household sayings. Two other works—Houwelyk ('Marriage') and Trou-ringh ('Wedding Ring'), with 59 plates—are rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity. Finally, in one of his last books, Ouderdom, buyten-leven en hof-gedachten ("Old Age, Country Life, and Garden Thoughts"), with 27 plates, Cats writes movingly about his declining years. Engraved print series with an engraved title-page and 24 engraved prints (9 single-page and 15 double-page; 18 bound in and 6 loosely inserted), the double-page prints with extensive letterpress text flanking and/or below the engraving. Contemporary marbled-paper wrappers.

Atlas van Stolk 3182; Brunet I, pp. 194-195; Cohen, col. 28; KVK & WorldCat (3 copies); Muller, Historieplaten 3038-3071. Extremely rare complete emblematic print series (plus alternative versions of several prints) mercilessly satirizing and ridiculing King Louis XIV of France, his grandson King Philip V of Spain, the Marquise de Maintenon (whom Louis XIV had secretly married after she had been his mistress for years), many others in Louis XIV's court and his allies in the War of the Spanish Succession (1700/01-1714). Most prints, like the title-page, have texts in both Dutch and French. The title and many of the prints gleefully note the total eclipse of the sun that occurred on 12 May 1706, supposedly the day Philip V abandoned his siege of Barcelona (which had been taken by the British six months earlier), presenting it as the total eclipse of the Sun King.In 1877 Muller noted the "great rarity" of all these prints, surviving in far fewer numbers than satirical prints of poorer quality and less importance. "Their value as expressions of the spirit and life of the common people is inestimable: indeed, there is almost no period in our history for which we possess such a rich treasure of prints." They also influenced the better known series on the 1720 South Sea Bubble, two of the present prints serving as direct models for prints in that series. The title-page attributes the emblems to "the leading masters of our century" and some of the plates have been attributed to Romeyn de Hooghe and/or someone from his school, Laurens Scherm and the publisher Carel Allard himself.Although no two copies of the print series have the same makeup, and many of the emblems exist in variant forms, the present set of prints includes the engraved title-page, at least one of each of the 19 emblems noted by Muller, and two versions of some, so it may be called "complete". The present copy includes a major variant not recorded by Muller (or elsewhere). With 6 prints loosely inserted, 3 of them with a slightly tattered fore-edge, 1 also with a marginal tear along an old fold repaired with tape, and 1 bound print slightly browned, but still generally in very good condition. The spine of the marbled wrapper is mostly lost and the sides rubbed, with a few small and minor tears and stains, but the binding structure remains sound. One of the best and most extensive copies of an extremely rare and important popular satirical print series from the War of the Spanish Succession.

Florence: n.p., 1700. Edizione Testina. Vignette of Machiavelli's portrait on title. Separate dated title pages to all parts except the Historie fiorentine which begins the volume. Dell'arte della guerra contains typographical figures depicting military formations and a double-page woodcut illustration depicting an army camp, and a manuscript table of contents following L'asino d'oro. Contemporary half vellum and marbled boards, manuscript titles on spine. Despite some browning and damp-staining, an excellent copy with an ownership inscription dated 1801 on the paste-down. I. Early edition of the political works of Machiavelli, which include: --Gli otto libri delle Historie Fiorentine. This particular publication is called the Edizione Testina, named after the author's woodcut portrait on all the half-titles. Five variant editions are known, all showing 1550 as the (fictitious) year of printing on the title page, but which in reality are seventeenth-century forgeries. The Testina edition constitutes an interesting bibliographic case because of the particular difficulties of identification for the presence of variants, omissions and rearrangements. Machiavelli's masterpiece, Il Principe, is the work with which he "founded the science of modern politics" by analyzing Cesare Borgia's much-admired "mixture of audacity and prudence, cruelty and fraud, self-reliance and distrust of others" (PMM). Machiavelli firmly believes in the separation between politics and ethics, as each have different objects and goals. The term "Machiavellian" has come to mean a ruthlessness and immorality behavior in politics. He stated that total freedom from the religious power was the principle of a healthy State. The work was written in 1513 but was not published in Rome until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. Il Principe exerted an enormous influence across disciplines and nations. The work soon became a practical examination of how "power" functioned. It was first placed on the Index of Prohibited Books, in the banned absolutely category, in 1559. The list of rulers who read and used the work is very long: "Henry III and Henry IV of France were carrying copies when they were murdered; Louis XIV used the book as 'his favorite nightcap'; an annotated copy was found in Napoleon Bonaparte's coach at Waterloo." Machiavelli (1469-1527) is known as the father of modern political theory. Born in Florence, he was a diplomat for 14 years in Italy's Florentine Republic during the Medici family's exile when the city was run by Girolamo Savonarola, a Dominican friar. No official records of Machiavelli's life appear until 1498, immediately after the fall of Savonarola's government, when he would have been 29. The Florentine Republic had been reinstated, and Machiavelli was appointed as secretary of the Second Chancery, a position in which he coordinated relations with Florence's territorial possessions. As the "Florentine secretary," he had opportunities to meet and observe many of the major political figures of the period. When the Medici family returned to power in 1512, Machiavelli was dismissed and briefly jailed. II. First edition of a little known political work. Written in the form of a dialogue in twenty-five inquiries (Consultationes), in which Vanitas (Vanity) and Veritas (Truth) discuss issues concerning policy-making in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. A commentary on techniques of making correct political decisions, the author examines the notion of prudence or practical reason (prudentia) stemming from Cicero's work. The third Consultatio of the work, De discordiis civilibus, et unione animorum (On discord between citizens, and on unanimity) is the most helpful passage to understand the author's use of prudentia. Vanitas expresses concern about the dissent among citizens, while Veritas encourages to embrace it as long as it is viewed as the guiding principle of the world. Here we can see a similarity with Machiavelli's Il Principe in asserting that a statesman's duty is to find an appropriate means of using those very internal tensions for the advantage of his own goals as well as those of the state. Although this works contains both similarities and contrasts with Machiavelli's thinking, it is very controversial due to its discrepancies at the point where Lubomirski describes the duties and characteristics of a ruler. It swings from being a pessimistic view of the political situation in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to a commentary on techniques of making correct political decisions. Lubomirski (1642-1702) was a Polish politician that fought in wars against Sweden and Hungary. In contrast to his father, Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski (1616-1667), military commander and one of the most significant magnates of the seventeenth century, Stanislao was free of private ambitions and always acted according to the interests of the Republic. He was a prolific writer of poetry, plays, religious and historical treatises. III: Scarce edition of a penetrating operetta in which the author deals with the legal and economic problems related to the birth of the modern city and state. Botero (1544-1617), an eminent economist and political theorist, joined the Jesuit Order in 1560 but left due to disagreements with his superiors. He became secretary to Cardinal Charles Borromeo, but in 1559 moved to Turin as tutor to the children of Charles Emmanuel of Savoy. A passionate reader of Machiavelli, he exposed his political views in his most famous work, Della Ragion di Stato (1598), the first to express the concept of the Reason of the State, in which Botero argues, against Machiavelli, that a prince's power must be based on some form of consent of his subjects, and princes must make every effort to win the people's affection and admiration.
