Sprendlingen, Germany. 1700. Hardcover. Good. Large blind embossed vellum bound Church Gradual (34 x 21 cm; 13.25 x 8.25 inches), 508 numbered pages, with p. 499 bearing the following information: 'Dis buch ist geschrieben worden durch JOANNES PHILIPPI KNAB, der zet-Catholischer Schulmeister in Sprendlingen im jahr 1700..." Condition good to very good, clasps to binding lacking, edgewear, some recent vellum repairs to spine, contents also good to very good, well thumbed and general light edgewear to pages, multiple occasional very short tears and a few slightly longer tears, but in general very good. An amazing gradual with music and Latin text, composed in red and black inks and with many decorations, embellishments and rubrications in German folk- art motifs that recall the decorative arts of the Pennsylvania Dutch. Sprendlingen is a short distance SW of Frankfurt and NW of Mannheim. We could not find out much regarding Knab, but his name appears in 1716 as pastor of St. Michael's and Vitus Church in Heiligenstadt in upper Franconia, and there is mention of a Knab of the same name and time associated with the towns of Coburg and Mengersdorf. A beautiful and unique work. Housed in handsome green cloth clamshell box.

FASHIONING FASHION : Deux siècles de mode européenne, 1700-1915

Prestel & Les Ars Décoratifs & Delmonico Books & Los Angeles County Museum of Art - Munich & Paris 2012. 1 Volume/1. Two folio volumes bound in one, each separately paged and signed, and each with additional engraved title page bearing a portrait of the author, as well as sectional title pages with engraved vignettes. Recent period-style full vellum binding by Fitterer, mustard lettering piece decorated and lettered in gilt, end papers renewed. An exemplary example in a magnificent vellum binding, occasional spotting and minor marginal browning internally, else fresh and bright with deep rich impressions of type and plates. & Cats was a Dutch statesman and writer of emblem books, a type of popular, seventeenth-century literature consisting of woodcuts or engravings accompanied by didactic verses pointing a moral or presenting an ethical concern often related to love and marriage. (Dutch artists of the Golden Age, including Vermeer, used such books as inspiration for motifs in their paintings and prints.) The sources upon which Cats draws for this combination of emblem literature and love poetry are chiefly the Bible and the classics and occasionally Boccaccio and Cervantes. His first book, Sinne-en minnebeelden ("Portraits of Morality and Love") contained 96 emblematic engravings with text in Dutch, Latin, and French, each emblem with a threefold interpretation, expressing what were for Cats the three elements of human life: love, society, and religion. Perhaps his most famous emblem book, written in a more homely style than his earlier works, is Spiegel van den ouden en nieuwen tyt ("Mirror of Old and New Times"), with 128 emblematical engravings accompanied by quotations, many of which have become household sayings. Two other works—Houwelyk ('Marriage') and Trou-ringh ('Wedding Ring'), with 59 plates—are rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity. Finally, in one of his last books, Ouderdom, buyten-leven en hof-gedachten ("Old Age, Country Life, and Garden Thoughts"), with 27 plates, Cats writes movingly about his declining years. Atterbury charged Wake with the submission of the church liberties to the arbitrary will of a sovereign. It was first published in 1697 as A Letter to a Convocation-Man, Concerning the Rights, Powers, And Priviledges of that Body. Both editions are scarce.         Florentia Pulcherrima et Ruriae Civitas

Amsterdam. unbound. Václav Hollar. Map. Engraving. Image measures 17.5" x 28.5". This detailed bird's-eye view, published circa 1700, depicts Florence and its immediate surroundings. The Arno river cuts diagonally across the plan from lower left to upper right, where it meets two putti holding a decorative shield. The town's star-shaped fort can also be seen to the far left. Surrounding the central plan are 10 town views, 5 on each side. In addition to typical architectural sights such as Pitti Palace and the Duomo, these views also include cultural and athletic events--such as boxing, boat and horse racing--which were less commonly seen on maps of this period. Two keys in the upper left (1-17) and lower right (1-228) label sites of interest on the map, particularly churches. The map appeared in de Wit's rare town book, "Theatrum Praecipuarum Totius Europae." The map is in fair condition from being framed. Beautiful as is with overall toning, but can easily be cleaned and restored for an extra fee. Frederick de Wit (1629/30--1706) was one of the foremost cartographers and map sellers of the Dutch Golden Age. Based in Amsterdam, he began with a small printing shop in 1654 and soon became internationally known for his city plans and wall maps of the world. His most famous work is the "Theatrum Praecipuarum Totius Europae," published after 1694, which contained 132 plans and views of European and Asian cities. By 1671, he was producing large folio atlases for both his shop and individual patrons that could contain anywhere between 15 and 150 maps. Today, these atlases grace the collections of many museums and institutions as evidence of the vibrant cartographic trade in Amsterdam in the middle- and late-17th century. This striking map is a rare example from this work.

America Aurea Pars Alter Mundi Auctoribus

Amsterdam: [circa 1700]. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. 21 1/8 x 25 1/4 inches. Highly decorative map of North and South America showing California as an island and here with full period hand colouring. This decorative map by the Valk brothers is after a similar map by Carol Allard, first published circa 1696. Cartographically, both Allard and the Valks borrow heavily from the De Wit map of 1675, naming the Great Lakes, showing California as an island and with a Terra Esonis and Fretum Anian in the northwest. Interestingly, the Valks here re-issue the first state of Allard's map, i.e. before the re-engraving of the western Great Lakes and the Mississippi River (based on Hennepin's mapping). In addition, the lower left corner of the cartouche is left blank, whereas in subsequent issues of the Allard map, an inset of New Zealand appears. In the present issue, there are no toponyms on Terra Esonis and the South Pacific is without New Guinea. Cf. Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 724 (discussing the map under the entry for Allard); Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast, 496; Tooley, "California as an Island," 68 in Tooley, The Mapping of America; McLaughlin,The Mapping of California as an Island, 176.

Remarks Upon a Late Pamphlet Intitul'd, The Two Great Questions Consider'd: I. What the French King will do with respect to the Spanish Monarchy, II. What Meaures the English ought to take

London, 1700 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An extremely scarceessay responding to writer Daniel Defoe's political pamphlet concerning the events leading up to the War of Spanish Succession. Daniel Defoe (16591661-1731), born Daniel Foe, was an English trader, writer, journalist, and pamphleteer, who gained fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularise the form in Britain and along with others such as Richardson, is among the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he wrote more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on various topics (including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology and the supernatural). He was also a pioneer of economic journalism. Defoe's first notable publication was An Essay upon Projects, a series of proposals for social and economic improvement, published in 1697. From 1697 to 1698 he defended the right of King William III to a standing army during disarmament after the Treaty of Ryswick (1697) had ended the Nine Years' War (168897). When Charles II died in 1700, the line of the Spanish Habsburgs died with him. He had named as his successor a grand-nephew, Philip, Duke of Anjou (a grandson of the reigning French king Louis XIV, and of Charles' half-sister, Maria Theresa of SpainLouis XIV himself was an heir to the Spanish throne through his mother, daughter of Philip III of Spain). As alternate successor he had named his blood cousin Charles. The spectre of the multi-continental empire of Spain passing under the effective control of Louis XIV provoked a massive coalition of powers to oppose the Duc d'Anjou's succession. The actions of Louis heightened the fears of, among others, the English, the Dutch and the Austrians. In February 1701, the French King caused the Parlement of Paris (a court) to register a decree that should Louis himself have no heir that the Duc d'Anjou (Phillip V of Spain) would surrender the Spanish throne for that of the French, ensuring dynastic continuity in Europe's greatest land power. The War of the Spanish Succession (17011714) was therefore fought among several European powers, including a divided Spain, over the possible unification of the Kingdoms of Spain and France under one Bourbon monarch. As France and Spain were among the most powerful states of Europe, such a unification would have drastically altered the European balance of power. Condition: In paper wraps. Externally worn, with chipping and loss to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Brightand relatively clean, somewhat dusted. Overall: GOOD..

A New Map of North America shewing its principal divisions, chief cities, townes, rivers, mountains, &c. Dedicated to his Highness William Duke of Glocester

London: [circa 1700]. Copper-engraved map. 17 x 22 3/4 inches. First state of a noted English map of North America, with a large depiction of California as an island. The map is dedicated to His Highness William Duke of Gloucester, with his coat of arms in the title cartouche. It was drawn and engraved by Michael Burghers, the official engraver of the University of Oxford, and appeared in editions of Wells atlas, titled A New Sett of Maps both Ancient and Present Geography. The general outline of North America generally follows Hennepin's depictions, with the discoveries in the Mississippi valley attributed to him on the map, but with other sources as well. English settlements are located along the eastern seaboard and a new French settlement is identified near the mouth of the Mississippi (i.e. d'Iberville's colony at Biloxi founded in 1699). In the interior, the Ohio River (named Hotico R.) is shown flowing through a mountain range, named the Apalachin M., but which run east-west in an arc that encloses the Spanish possessions of Florida. The Great Lakes are shown rather distorted, a large mythical lake still appears in Carolina and, as expected, the northwest coast is largely unmapped. Burden identifies four states of the map, printed between 1700 (though with some evidence to suggest that the first state was completed in 1699) and circa 1743; the present example is the first state, without a plate number below the cartouche, with the Great Lakes unnamed and prior to the addition of Georgia. Burden, The Mapping of North America II:758; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 142; Tooley, "California as an Island," 69 in Tooley, The Mapping of America; Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast 466; Lowery 249; Leighly 116.

Rare sea chart of Brazil and the African Coast. c.1700. Amsterdam. Fine colour, some spotting and minor foxing, generally in excellent condition with unusual wide margins. An important sea chart of the coasts of Brazil and Africa; embellished with a large cartouche, ships sailing and a compass rose. This chart shows the entire Brazilian coastline, with profuse detail of the towns and cities inhabiting the shores (often imaginary). Van Keulen (1654 ? 1715) was an influential Dutch 17th century cartographer and mapmaker, his atlases, the Zee Atlas and Zee-Fakkel, intended as aid for navigators, are amongst the best cartographic productions of the end of the 17th century. He began his activities as printer in 1678 in Amsterdam; shortly thereafter he obtained his license for printing, employing Jan Luyken and Claes Vooght (famed mathematician) amongst others. Although not the rarest, his most monumental production was the De Nieuwe Groote Lichtende Zee-Fakkel, where these maps were included; the Zee-Fakkel was published in several editions, its contents spanned the whole world. Remarkably, the part dedicated to Brazil was particularly rich, which probably accounts for the Dutch interest in the region. The family and successors of Johannes continued the business well into the 18th century.

[ALBUM OF 22 ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS, ON SILK, OF BIRDS AND LEPIDOPTERA]

[Japan. ca. 1810s-20s].. Folio (33 x 27.5 cm). Late 19th or early 20th century marbled calf, raised bands, spine gilt extra, gilt label, a.e.g., with watercolor river scenes on paper onlaid as doublures. Binding extremities rubbed, images offset a bit to interleaves, occasional patches of darkening to backgrounds of a few images, one corner of an interleaf creased and a bit torn, but otherwise very good to near fine. A lovely collection of watercolor images on silk of birds, moths and butterflies, the artist unknown, but the paintings executed with great skill. The twenty-two individual panels vary somewhat in size, but approximate 24 x 20 cm to 20 x 16cm, and each includes several specimens: in the case of the birds, 2-4, in the case of the Lepidoptera, 5-10. The individual panels are mounted to heavy stock via blue silk bordering. The birds are identified via manuscript captions next to each bird; the Lepidoptera are not captioned. A pencil note on the free endsheet in an early hand dates the paintings somewhat earlier (1700- 1750 Shijo School) than do those later in its most recent provenance: tipped in unidentified mid-20th century auction description (dating the paintings to early 19th century) - private collection.

ESSAY CONCERNING HUMANE UNDERSTANDING In Four Books

London: for Awnsham and John Churchil, 1700. The fourth edition, with a large number of additions. With the engraved portrait frontispiece of John Locke. Folio, full contemporary paneled calf, expertly rebacked to correct period style with tall raised bands double-ruled in gilt and a brown morocco label gilt ruled and lettered. [39], 438, [index, errata] pp. A very handsome copy, crisp and in fine order inside and out, pastedown and free-fly renewed with proper handmade paper, the binding very attractive, sturdy and sound. A VERY EARLY PRINTING WITH THE PORTRAIT, AND A VERY HANDSOME COPY OF LOCKE’S GREAT ESSAY, the "first attempt on a great scale, and in the Baconian spirit, to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge, when confronted with God and the universe" (EB). This was the last edition to be published in Locke’s lifetime. The fourth edition contains all of the additions of the previous three editions, including the portrait and the index. The principal additions include an epistle to the reader on Locke’s terminology and there are two wholly new chapters. The first on the association of ideas (book II, chapter XXXII) and the second being on enthusiasm (book IV, Chapter XIX). There are also numerous minor additions and corrections. Locke's ESSAY served as the most concrete manifestation of a new empiricist spirit, in contrast to the metaphysical philosophies of Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz. Locke was inspired to write the ESSAY in 1671 after a philosophical discussion with friends in which he realized that no progress could be made before they had examined the mind's capacities and seen "what objects our understandings were, or were not, fitted to deal with" (from the "Epistle to the Reader"). "Other philosophers had reflected on and written about human knowledge... But Locke was the first philosopher to devote his main work to an inquiry into human understanding, its scope and its limits. And we can say that the prominent place occupied in modern philosophy by the theory of knowledge is in large measure due to him..." (Copleston, A HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY). Locke's influence was widespread and was not strictly limited to pure philosophical inquiry. In America his emphasis on rational thought versus "enthusiasm" provided ammunition and philosophical grounding to opponents of the revivalist and itinerant preachers of the Great Awakening, and in the nineteenth century the "nature versus nurture" thesis was employed by Unitarians and other anti-Calvinist factions to argue that human nature was improvable through nurture and self-culture rather than corrupt beyond hope without conversion through a special act of divine grace. In England Locke had a strong influence on the literature of the Augustan Age, Sterne, Addison, and the members of the Scriblerus Club all acknowledging the currency of his ideas. "The art of education, political thought, theology and philosophy, especially in Britain, France, and America, long bore the stamp of the ESSAY, or of reaction against it" (Fraser, quoted in Grolier). Locke's ESSAY has passed through more editions than any classic in modern philosophical literature and remains a cornerstone in the history of human thought.

Künstler, I,68.

        [Istanbul] Constantinopolis

Amsterdam: circa 1700. Copper engraving, printed on laid paper, in excellent condition. 20 7/8 x 24 ¾ inches. A stunning panoramic view of Constantinople, by the celebrated Dutch cartographer Frederick de Wit. Flourishing around 1650, Frederick de Wit was one of the most successful map engravers in Amsterdam. Following the decline of the Blaeu and Jansson publishing houses, de Wit cornered the cartographic publishing market by acquiring a vast array of used copper plates. His prolific business encompassed almost every aspect of map making from sea charts and atlases to town books and town plans; he even produced large wall maps. His work, which is finely engraved and superbly executed, was extremely popular and continued to be published even after his death. This impressive engraving is a striking town view of Constantinople in Turkey, and would have been originally published as part of a larger work.

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, [circa 1700]. Copper engraved map, engraved by Romein de Hooghe, on two sheets joined, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset plan of Boston Harbor. 25 1/4 x 37 inches. Mortier's map of English America from his famed Neptune François. Although the title suggests this map of English North America to be based on Sanson, it is in fact "drawn directly from Robert Morden's significant New Map of the English Empire in America, c. 1698. The most notable feature here is the mountain range extending from the Florida peninsula northwards into Michigan ... Despite many of the toponyms being translated into French, the map's English origins are clearly seen, including Copper Mine near present day Chicago, and Mines of Iron besides the Ohio River, both originating in the Thevenot, 1681. The unusual depiction of Green Bay, the broader northern portion of the Delaware peninsula, the boundaries of Pennsylvania extending far to the north, the altered Cape Cod and the inset plan of Boston harbour are all features found on the Morden map. Indeed, this is the first printing of a plan of an English colonial city in a non-English map" (Burden). The general title and imprint appears in the upper left corner of this two sheet map; however, a second title (Partie Orientale de l'Amerique Angloise) and imprint appears in the upper right corner, allowing Mortier to use the same map joined, as here, in his Neptune François, or as separate sheets in his Atlas Nouveau.

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, [1700]. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gold embellishments, in very good condition. 24 1/2 x 37 3/4 inches. A superb coastal chart of western Africa, with exquisite original colour and gold highlights This large scale, beautifully coloured chart, which shows the west coast of Africa from the southern border of Morocco to the southern border of Gabon, comes from the third part of Mortier's edition of Le Neptune François, or Suite du Neptune François, a lavish collection of charts derived from manuscripts in the Royal Portuguese archives. The Portuguese had of course been the first Europeans to explore the coasts of Africa. The map includes two handsome vignettes of the historically important islands that lie somewhat outside the purview of this chart: Ascension Island and St. Helena. Pierre Mortier's grandparents were French émigrés, who left France in about 1625 to live in Leiden. His parents settled in Amsterdam in 1661 or 1662. Mortier grew up in Amsterdam but lived in Paris from 1681 to about 1685 where he must have gotten into the book trade. Once he was in Amsterdam again he specialized in French books and maintained his relationships with Parisian publishers. Amsterdam was at this time the international marketplace for books, especially books forbidden by repressive governments. He established himself in the field of cartographical publishing by offering editions of French maps, primarily Sanson's and Jaillot's to a public tired of the superb but dated Dutch offerings. Working on a scale larger than the typical Dutch folio map and providing the new insights of French geography, he was immensely successful. The charts in his version of Le Neptune François are outstanding examples of cartographical art. They are among the most beautiful printed sea charts ever made. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, M.       Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Apud Fredericum Haaring, et Davidem Severinum Bibliopolas [through 1700], 1699. Vellum. Very Good. Two volumes in one. 4to: [16],494,[26]; [6],282(misprinted 826),[4], with copper-engraved portrait of Galileo, additional engraved title page (after Stefano della Bella), dated 1700, showing Aristotle, Ptolemy and Copernicus discussing the heliocentric and geocentric models of the solar system, and numerous woodcut illustrations. In addition to Galileo's texts, this edition includes (following conclusion of the Dialogo) the introduction to "Astronomia nova" (pp. 446-454), in which Johannes Kepler argued in favor of heliocentrism based upon his ten-year-long investigation of the motion of Mars; the Latin translation of Paolo Antonio Foscarini's "Epistola R.P.M. Pauli Antonii Foscarini, Carmelitani, circa Pythagoricorum, & Copernici opinionem de mobilitate terræ, et stabilitate solis: et de novo systemate seu consitiutione mundi" (Letter concerning the Opinion of the Pythagoreans and Copernicus about the Mobility of the Earth and Stability of the Sun, and the New Pythagorean System of the World, pp. 455-487), in which Foscarini defends the Copernican theory against charges that it conflicted with Scripture, and "The judgment of the Cardinals against Galileo and his abjuration (pp. 488-494), first printed in Riccioli's "Almagestum," in 1651. Period full vellum over boards, titled in manuscript to spine, edges speckled black, plain period end papers. A handsome, unsophisticated copy, rare in this condition. Vellum soiled and stained, scattered minor foxing, some thumbing to final few leaves, but a tight, clean example. PMM 128 (Dialogo first edition) & 130 (Discorsi). Carli and Favaro 395. Dibner 8 and 141. Norman 858. & First Leiden Edition of the Dialogo (Fourth Latin Edition, Fifth Edition overall), bound with the First Latin Edition (third overall) of the Two New Sciences. Galileo's discoveries with the telescope (described in Sidereus nuncius, in 1610), confirmed his belief that the Sun is the center of the universe and Earth a planet, as Copernicus had argued. But by 1616, the Inquisition had pronounced Copernican theory heretical, and Galileo was admonished not to “hold or defend” it. Then in 1624, Maffeo Cardinal Barberini, friend, admirer, and patron of Galileo for a decade, was named Pope Urban VIII, and granted Galileo permission to write a book about theories of the universe but warned him to treat the Copernican theory only hypothetically. That book, the Dialogo (Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic & Copernican), was first published, in Italian, in 1632. In it, Galileo gathered together all the arguments (mostly based on his own telescopic discoveries) for the Copernican theory and against the traditional geocentric cosmology put forth by Ptolemy and Aristotle. (The Dialogo takes the form of a discussion between a spokesman for Copernicus, one for Ptolemy and Aristotle, and an educated layman for whose support the other two vie.) Reaction against the book was swift. The pope convened a special commission, which recommended that the Inquisition bring a case against Galileo. Galileo confessed to having overstated his case and was condemned to life imprisonment, though he never spent a day in a dungeon; the Dialogo remained on the Inquisition's Index of prohibited books until 1822. The two new sciences with which the second book deals are mechanics and motion (kinematics). Together, they underlie modern physics, and the Two Sciences is considered the "first modern textbook in physics" (Dibner), "not only because it contains the elements of the mathematical treatment of motion, but also because most of the problems that came rather quickly to be seen as problems amenable to physical experiment and mathematical analysis were gathered together with suggestive discussions of their possible solution." (Dictionary of Scientific Biography) Newton claimed he derived the first two laws of motion from this book. N. B.
