The dispensary: a poem. In six canto's. The fourth edition, corrected by the author.

printed and sold by John Nutt, London 1700 - 8vo, pp. [22], 96; contemporary full paneled calf, maroon morocco label on gilt-paneled spine, neatly rebacked; minor wear; good and sound, or better. With the engraved bookplate of Viscount Sydney, i.e. Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney (1733 - 1800), a British politician who held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18th century whose most enduring legacy is that the cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada, and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia are named in his honour, in 1785 and 1788 respectively.Garth (1661-1719) was both a physician and a poet, and a fellow of the College of Physicians. On the last page of the Harveian oration at the College of Physicians, Garth "alludes to a scheme, which had been discussed in the college from 1687, for establishing a dispensary where poor people could obtain advice and prescriptions from the best physicians. While a large majority of the fellows of the college supported this scheme, a minority allied themselves with the apothecaries of the city, who tried to defeat the plan, chiefly by charging exorbitant prices for the drugs prescribed. In 1699 Garth published ëThe Dispensary, a Poem,í which is a record of the first attempt to establish those out-patient rooms now universal in the large towns of England. ëThe Dispensaryí ridicules the apothecaries and their allies among the fellows. It was circulated in manuscript, and in a few weeks was printed and sold by John Nutt, near Stationers' Hall. A second and a third edition appeared in the same year, to which were added a dedication to Anthony Henley, an introduction explaining the controversy in the College of Physicians, and copies of commendatory verses. A fourth edition appeared in 1700, a sixth in 1706, a seventh in 1714, and a tenth in 1741. The poem continued to be generally read for fifty years, and some of its phrases are still quoted. It describes a mock Homeric battle between the physicians and the apothecaries, Harvey being finally summoned from the Elysian fields to prescribe a reform" (DNB). Wing G275.         Carte Particuliere de L'Isle Dauphiné ou Madagascar et St. Laurens.

1700 - Amsterdam, 1700. Original body colour. Two sheets conjoined, total 565 x 850mm. Very fine condition, in attractive original colouring. A large chart of Madagascar, orientated with north to the left, published in Mortier's monumental three-part sea-atlas, 'Le Neptune François'. The first part was a counterfeit of a French original (with 'à Paris' in the publication line); the second part, the 'Atlas Maritime' contained charts engraved by Romain de Hooghe, including the famous chart of the Mediterranean; the third, the 'Suite de Neptune François', contained charts from Portuguese sources. This chart comes from a full-colour example rather than the usual outline. Of particular interest is the delineations of Antongil Bay and Nosy Boraha (Île Sainte-Marie) in the north east: at the time both were havens for European pirates preying on the East India trade and Mughal treasure ships. The actions of William Kidd, Henry Every, John Bowen & Thomas Tew in the region helped make the period of this chart the golden age of piracy.         (Vases)

1700. Paris, F. Poilly, n.d. (circa 1700). Folio. Suite of 6 engraved plates. Untrimmed leaves. (c. 35 x 26 cm).First leaf (title) with smoothed crease and slightly dusty. Loose in recent marbled portfolio. A fine set. Suite of richly decorated vases and jugs, with staffage, partly with landscapes in the background. Jean le Pautre (1618-1682), elder brother of the architect Antoine, began his career as an apprentice to the 'menusier' Adam Philippon, for whom he produced ornamental designs. His first plates illustrate the baptism of Louis XIV on 21 April 1643. Le Pautre is considered to be one of the most inventive and prolific ornamental draftsmen of all time. He was capable of producing designs for any subject. His remarkable technical abilities enabled him later in his career to develop his designs directly as he engraved them. Le Pautre's importance is vas. He established a character of grandeur and inimitable richness that transformed the heavy, soft forms of Flemish ornamentation, which represent the style Louis XIII, into the style Louis XIV. All Europe followed his influence until the end of the eighteenth century. Masters recommended the study of Le Pautre's designs to their students, and his prints of architectural ornament would become standard models for all artists working in the style Louis XIV. [c.f. Ornamentst. Kat. Berlin # 313; on Le Pautre see Millard, French, pp. 293 - 294].
