Burthogge, Richard
London: Printed for John Dunton, 1694 First edition of a book that has become scarce in commerce. Contemporary speckled sheep, lacking spine label. . Octavo. Lacking the initial blank. Woodcut diagram on p. 145. Dedication to John Locke. Binding extremities rubbed, contemporary armorial bookplate on front pastedown partly torn away, nineteenth-century book label of Rev. John James partly superimposed. A very good copy. Burthogge (bap. 1638, d. 1705) "dedicated two philosophical works to Licke, evidently seen as a prestigious ally, An Essay upon Reason and the Nature of Spirits begins with an effective restatement of his idealism, emphasizing the role of categorical concepts and making some use of Lockean argument. There are interesting suggestions as to the nature of consciousness, leading into a somewhat Spinozistic, 'harmoniously' speculative panpsychism, which ws further defended in 1699. In the last years of both their lives Burthogge corresponded with Locke, whose commentary on St. Paul adopts the interpretation of Romans 8: 28-20 (a major source of the doctrine of the elect( argued for in Burthogge's last work, published in 1702…Burthogge has received some recognition by historians of philosophy, both in the past, as by Sir William Hamilton and Ernst Cassirer, and in recent work. But it has been summary and in passing, generally with emphasis on his 'anticipation' of Kant or, less commonly, of Locke. His thought deserves fuller consideration, however, both as an illustration of what modern idealism owed to error theory and toleration theory, and for his revealing, … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

BLOUNT, SIR THOMAS POPE
Printed by Ric. Everingham, for R. Bently, London, 1694. 203 x 159 mm. (8 x 6 1/4"). 6 p.l., 129, [3] pp.; 248 pp. Two parts in one volume. FIRST EDITION. Really excellent contemporary dark sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with central fleuron and filigree cornerpieces, gilt titling (portions of the joints apparently repaired with great skill). Front pastedown with engraved armorial bookplate of "Rolle" (see below). Lowndes I, 221; Wing B-3347. Short crack at top of rear joint, front board just slightly tending to splay, minor wear to corners and covers, but the attractive period binding entirely solid and generally very well preserved. Most of the rear free endpaper torn away, isolated rust spots and marginal stains, but VERY FINE INTERNALLY, the text unusually clean and fresh and printed within ample margins. This is a beautiful copy, with important provenance, of a survey of various poetic forms, coupled with short biographies of major ancient and modern poets. Politician and writer Thomas Blount (1649-97) begins by discussing things a poet should or should not do: he must keep his "wit and Fancy" within bounds, while still displaying a sense of humor; he should write about love but avoid "obscenity"; he should not be addicted to flattery. These admonitions are followed by an examination of various forms of poetry, from epics, elegies, and odes to burlesques, lampoons, and farces. The second half of the work, "Characters and Censures," contains 67 short biographies and critical evaluations of poets from Aeschylus to Shakespeare. The book relies he … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

(EMBLEM BOOK). LA VIGNE, DAVID DE
Amsterdam: Joannes Stichter, 1694. Hardcover. 260 x 203 mm (10 1/4 x 8"). [10] leaves of text, plus plates. Appealing modern calf by Strauss (stamp-signed on rear pastedown), covers with central quatrefoil composed of intricate fleurons, the fleuron stamp repeated at the corners and in two panels on the flat spine. TEXT AND IMAGES ENGRAVED THROUGHOUT, WITH 42 FINE PLATES AFTER ROMEYN DE HOOGHE with images providing instruction on preparing for one's death. Landwehr, "Romeyn de Hooghe," 84. Covers with small whitish patches, title page with faint brown stain to lower fore corner, two plates with small spot of foxing in margin, other equally trivial imperfections, but A VERY FINE COPY, the plates clean, fresh, bright, and richly impressed, and the pleasant binding unworn. The text and the detailed, often fascinating engravings here provide meditations intended to help one prepare for death. The work is divided into three sections, each with a frontispiece and 13 plates. In each plate, we see a man on his sick bed, with putti hovering above him holding a picture depicting a scene from Christ's final days (first the Last Supper, then the Passion, finally the Crucifixion). There is always a helpful angel directing the invalid's attention to these images, and sometimes there are frightful demons tormenting the sufferer. The sickroom can be a messy place, and here we see priests, servants, and family members bumping into each other in their efforts to minister to the patient. In some scenes, servants, family, and a pet dog are sleeping by the sickbed; in others we see … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

ANONYMOUS.:
No place or name of printer, 1694.. FIRST EDITION 1694, small 8vo, 170 x 105 mm, 6¾ x 4¼ inches, engraved frontispiece of the King, pages: (2), iii-xvi, 320, with errata at foot of final page, bound in modern quarter calf over marbled sides, gilt dividing line, raised bands and gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered title, all edges gilt. Small pale damp stain at inner edge of frontispiece and title page, showing faintly intermittently throughout the volume, occasional small pale brown stain, a little spotting to last 50 pages, mostly to top outer corner, last 20 pages foxed and last 6 pages browned, of which 1 has tiny chip to fore-edge and final page has 2 tiny chips to upper margin, browned pages all easily legible. A very good tight copy of a scarce work. First 3 words of title in Greek letters. The frontispiece which is an imitation of the one in Charles I's Eikon Basilike shows the King kneeling before a table covered with a cloth decorated with the fleur-de-lis and on which is a crown and sceptre; above and to his left is a female figure seated on a cloud, possibly one of his mistresses. "This is a malignant attack on Charles II, of unknown authorship, representing him as a Roman Catholic throughout. There are seventy-seven chapters, caricaturing the 'Eikon' and dealing with various episodes in the King's career, some of which have mock prayers at the end". See Madan, A New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike, page 111, No. 132. Pages 309-315 contain two papers, found in the strong box and published in 1686, setting out the King's reasons for turning R … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

HOLDER (William)
London Printed by J. Heptinstall for L. Meredith, 1694. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 171 x 104 mms., pp. [viii], 120, contemporary panelled calf. A fine copy, with the calligraphic autograph, probably contemporary, "Henry Wigley" on the top margin of the front paste-down end-paper, and "Berd. Whalley" on the top margin of the title-page. Wigley is probably the Reverend Henry Wigley of Pensham House, Worcestershire. Wigley was the grandfather, through his daughter, of Ambrose St. John (1815 - 1875), the Roman Catholic priest and headmaster, who was born in Islington, and this perhaps suggests an Islingtonian provenance for this book. In yet another hand, probably contemporary or early 18th century, are two salutary bromides: "It is very Rare, yt [that] either ye joy, or ye Benefit of an Estate infamously gotten, continues long." And: "To sleep, to eat, to drink, at other Peoples Hours [?House], to walk thier Pace & to Love & Hate as they do, is ye vilest of Servitudes." "Berd. Whalley" is possibly Bernard Whalley, correspondent of Alexander Pope and subscriber to Pope's translation of the Iliad, about whom very little is known. Holder (1615/16 - 1698) is also the author of Principles of Harmony, also published in 1694. Robert Poole in his ODNB article on Holder notes, " Holder's subsequent Discourse Concerning Time (1694), written to explain the issue of calendar reform and reissued in 1701 after the renewed English rejection of the Gregorian calendar, was an elegant exposition of the concept of harmony on a cosmic scale. In it he developed the idea that rational human perception was … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

TEMPLE, (WILLIAM F.).
Haag, chez A. Moetjens, 1694. 12:o. (16),480,(4) s. Översättning av "Memoirs of what past in christendom, from the war begun 1672 to the peace concluded 1679" (1691), vilken rör krigen mellan England och Holland på 1670-talet.

LONGINUS, Dionysius. [title In Greek].
Trajecti ad Rhenum: Ex Officini Francisci Halma, 1694. First Tollius edition. 4to, pp., [28], 408, [12]. Engraved title-page; Printed with Greek and Latin texts on facing pages, woodcut printer's device, ornaments and initials, full vellum backed marble boards with leather label. Upper margin along the hinge shows a water mark in the preliminary matter, o/w a very nice clean copy. Longinus was a Greek Platonic philosopher and rhetorician of the 3rd century AD. He studied in Alexandria and taught in Athens. He was beheaded by Emperor Aurelian in 273 A.D. but is remembered for his Philosophical Discourses, On First Principles, On the Chief End. His authorship of the present work is desputed. Praised by Dibdin and Gibbon, this edition of these commentaries on The Sublime by the anonymous author known as Longinus "is one of the greatest of all critical acheievements. An illuminating dissertation on style, accompanied by many penetrating judgements as well as suggestive pronouncements on critical standards and principles, the treatise is unique in its interpretation of the classical spirit, its compelling enthusiasms, its sanity, its freshness and its unerring insights into the essentials of art."(OCD).

MOLESWORTH, ROBERT.
London 1694. Sm. 8vo. (24) + 172 pp. Later full speckled calf, spine with five raised bands. Last page with tear at edges slightly affecting text. Anonymously published. This edition has Roman numeral date in title; another edition has Arabic date. Rare pirate edition.. English diplomat and author. Born 1656, died 1725.From 1689 to 1692, Molesworth was emissary from the Court of St. James to the court of the King of Denmark - a task at which he was not particularly successful, making himself unpopular among the leading notables of the Danish court (due to ideological as well as personal disagreements - but also due to the ambiguous foreign policy that Denmark was pursuing in this period). In 1694, Molesworth published the book An Account of Denmark as it was in the Year 1692. The book was extremely critical of Danish absolutism, and of the perceived tyranny under which both the Danish army, church and general populace suffered. An Account of Denmark emphasised the values of the English electoral system as an attractive alternative to absolutism, and was thus a Whig political tract, which indirectly influenced later American ideas on independence.Molesworth's book was published in several editions, and in a number of languages. Several opposing tracts were published, with financial support from the Danish government

De Fer, Nicolas
Splendid Wall Map of the World, by De Fer, an unrecorded edition. 1694 (1711). Paris. Henrik van Loon. The map has been rebacked with fresh linen. A number of repaired tears in the text panels, with minor restoration in several small spots with some loss to text in panels, and extensive restoration to margins. 1780 mm x 1220 mm. Unrecorded 1711 edition of Nicolas De Fer's monumental double hemisphere wall map of the World first published in 1694. De Fer's map is one of the most decorative wall maps of the World. First published in 1694, the map was periodically updated with the newest cartographic discoveries ?such updates were usually the result of explorations in the East and West Indies- over the next 4 decades. Engraved by Hendrik van Loon with decorative embellishments, designed and engraved by Nicolaus Guerard, the map is one of the most enduring and iconic French wall maps of the World and would have hung in the salons and libraries of the French aristocracy during the Reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. This early edition of the map shows California as an island and fascinating early depictions of Australia and New Zealand. In the interior of Africa, De Fer records imaginary rivers and mountain ranges shown by his predecessors. One of the Nile Tributaries is shown correctly coming from Lake Tana, but the other finds its source in the Sahara. De Fer states along the equator that it is better to leave this space blank rather than fill it with unknown and imaginary particulars. Along the top are pictures of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury, based upon Cassini and … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

COURTILZ DE SANDRAS Gatien
A La Haye: Chez Henry Van Bulderen, 1694. relié. In 12 (9x16,5cm). - Chez Henry Van Bulderen, A La Haye _1694, In 12 (9x16,5cm), (8) 448pp., relié. - relié
