Libro primo

Scritte nel nostro Monasterio di Conegliano,, 1693. 4to (201 x 154 mm). Collation: pi1 [1-19]8 (+- 19/1); 20-238 248 (24/8+1). 194 leaves, in 2 parts, foliated [1], 1-151, [1 blank]; 1-41 (f. 16 blank but foliated). Written in brown ink in a very small, neat calligraphic hand, imitating roman type, 41 lines plus headlines (part 1), between vertical and horizontal blind ruling, 161 x 113 mm., table to Part 1 in a slightly larger italic script; part 2 lettering and page space slightly larger (33 lines plus headlines, pages ruled in blind, 161 x 121 mm.), but apparently all by the same hand. Catchwords on every recto. two full-page pen-and-ink drawings, on title verso, Crucifixion, within narrow floral border or carnations and other semi-realistic flowers, and part 2, f. 32v, the Trinity within central oval cartouche set within an elaborate and dense border of flowers and birds, including four roundels set within abstract blossoms, the two at top with the IHS monogram and the two at bottom with the Marian MRA monogram. 237 pen-and-ink ornamental capital initials: each of the 185 Lettere in part 1 opening with a 9-line roman initial on a densely decorated ground (33/34 mm.); part 2 with 52 similar 9-line initials (some 45 mm.); numerous tail-pieces of vases with flowers. Wormtrack in upper blank margin of first 3 leaves, some showthrough of initials throughout, about 5 initials with small holes from acidic ink. Contemporary parchment over semi-flexible pasteboards, edges red-sprinkled, covers with ms. note anno 1693 and old ink jottings and inkstains, endpapers with contemporary ms. arithmetical (?) calculations. *** An illustrated manuscript collection of 185 calligraphically transcribed letters from an unnamed Capuchin friar to dozens of equally anonymous men and women from every walk of society; with a second part containing various spiritual exercises and prayers. The manuscript is written in lettering imitating roman type, ranging from minuscule to small, and is decorated with over 200 roman capitals on densely ornamented grounds, and two full-page drawings, all apparently the work of the calligrapher. Founded in 1589, the monastery at Conegliano (north of Treviso) was known as an important novitiate community, and as a center of excellent preachers. The writer of these letters exercised his preaching skills in writing, each letter being a pious exhortation to a fellow cleric or to a layperson, including many women, as stated in the drop-title on p. 1 ("Scritte d me ... a diverse Persone di varij stati e conditioni, tanto Religiose, quanto Secolari, tanto Nobili, quanto Ignobili"). His correspondents include a newly ordained monk, a merchant, a timid young nun who doubts her importance to God, a jaded priest who feels no spiritual consolation when performing Mass, a "devout soul" who would like to know where Jesus went after the Resurrection, a capuchin father recently liberated from Turkish slavery, a fellow monk who wishes to know the writer's relationship with his body, a man who has just lost his father, another who has lost his mother, a gentlewoman from Padua who seeks consolation after the death of her son, another gentlewoman who loves her only son too much, a gentleman who suffers from podagra, a Capuchin missionary in Sudan, a sick nun, a fellow debauched young man who has lost both his parents, and so on. The second part, written in the same hand but in slightly larger scripts, includes spiritual exercises for preparing oneself for death, "composed by one of our devout Capuchin Fathers," followed by daily prayer practices, as taught by Jesus, and formulated as dialogues between Jesus and the soul, and the Testament of St. Carlo Borromeo. This section concludes with a colophon, "Roma, Nella Stamperia della Reverenda Camera Apostolica, 1694." In spite of the colophon and the writer / calligrapher's deliberate imitation of a printed text, I locate no printed editions of or even resembling this text.

Londini, D.B.&S.S. 1693.

First edition, Good copy.

The Wonders of the Invisible World. Being an account of the tryals of several witches, lately executed in New England

Printed first at Boston in New England, and reprinted in London for John Dunmow, 1693 FIRST ENGLISH EDITION of this famous history of the Salem witch trials, a classic of colonial American history. Cotton Mather, scion of the notable Boston family, entered Harvard College at twelve and graduated three years later. He was elected a fellow of Harvard in 1690 before he turned thirty. At the time of the Salem trials in 1692, Mather was already one of the most respected divines in New England. Author of over 400 books and tracts, he had an enormous impact on American thought at the turn of the eighteenth century. Wonders of the Invisible World is one of Mather's two best known works, the other being Magnalia Christi Americana. "This is one of the most important and rarest of all Mather's works - his contemporary history of the Salem trials . . . Historically, Mather's report on the trials is the last important exposition of witchcraft that was written while the superstition remained generally unquestioned. Mather described the trials objectively, but from the viewpoint of a firm believer in witches" (Streeter). More than one hundred suspected witches were arrested, and nineteen were hanged. Mather's account, written in the summer of 1692 while the trials were still being held, includes detailed descriptions of the cases and the surrounding events. By the fall the witch hunt had subsided, and Increase Mather led the backlash against the prosecutors. In order to place Mather's position on witchcraft in perspective, it is interesting to note the beliefs of other intellectuals of the day. Joseph Addison wrote in the Spectator in 1711, "I believe in general that there is and has been such a thing as witchcraft, but at the same time can give no credit to any particular instance of it." As late as 1765, William Blackstone wrote in his Commentaries on the Laws of England, Book IV, "To deny the possibility, nay the actual existence, of witchcraft and sorcery is flatly to contradict the revealed word of God." This is a rare book. This copy, complete, wide-margined and in a contemporary binding, is a wonderful addition to any collection of American books. 56 leaves (112 pp, irregularly paginated). Formerly bound with several other contemporary tracts in contemporary blind-paneled calf, now recased alone in that same contemporary binding. Repairs to binding. Small tear to half-title. A fine copy of a rare work.

- Selten.

Hermanus van Loon (1649/1650-ca. 1676/1701) was a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam. Cartographer: Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712), was a French cartographer. He joined the Sanson heirs and redrew Nicolas Sanson's maps on a larger scale. Publisher: Pieter Mortier (1661-1711). The 18th century Dutch map trade could build on their reputation that originated from the Golden Age much longer than was assumed until now. This is a scarce map: it not appear in all of Coronelli's atlases and the examples that did were often damaged because of the large height and width. MORETTO: 114, first state of three, 'considered one of the most beautiful and appreciated Venetian maps'.

Der Ninivitische Buß-Spiegel, Aus der Wunder-Geschicht Des Propheten Jonae, Vorgestellet, Durch Antenorn, einen Liebhaber des Worts Gottes (d.i. J. B. Schupp).

      - O.O., Dr. u. J. (Hamburg, Liebezeit?, ca. 1693). 478 S. Etwas späterer Leder mit Rückenschild u. Stehkantenvergoldung (etwas berieben, Vorsätze angestaubt u. fleckig). Map subsequently incorporated into the publications under Bellin for the Depot de la Marine. State: We do not know the exact ed. of this map. When Nicolas Sanson, the premier French cartographer of his days, died he negotiated to republish much of his work. He re-published many of Sanson's maps on a larger scale. His maps were admired for their beautiful cartouches. In 1686 he was awarded the title of Geographe du Roi by Louis XIV. Jailliot was succeed by his son, Bernard Jean Hyacinthe Jaillot (1673-1739), grandson, Bernard Antoine Jaillot (died 1749) and the latter's brother-in-law, Jean Baptiste-Michel Renou de Chauvigne-Jaillot (1710-1780). Thousand of maps were brought on the market by Covens & Mortier, often edited from earlier sources and all members of this firm were gifted with a great commercial talent. Pieter and David Mortier were booksellers in Paris from 1681-1685 and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter's death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over in 1721.
