He especially critizises the witch trials that plagued northern Europe at the time. His denial of the power of the devil on earth got him into trouble with the church, but his contribution played an important part in early enlightenment and in the ending of witchcraft persecutions.

BEDE, Saint Venerable
Londini: S. Roycroft; Impensis Roberti Clavell, 1693. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th- and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology. This 17th-century printing of Bede's works includes his 'Commentary on Genesis', his dialogues with his pupil Egbert of York, his encomium of Saint Aldhelm and Aldhelm's own 'Laude Virginitatis'. This treatise was a famous work to nuns on the importance of keeping one's virginity. This 1693 London edition was edited by Henry Wharton and Sir James.

[PENN, William].
London: for Thomas Northcott, 1693. 12mo (121 × 70 mm), pp. [xvi], 134. Nineteenth century half morocco. Second edition (appearing in the same year as the first) of one of the best-loved works of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. After Penn's departure from Pennsylvania in 1684, he returned to England. At the time of the Glorious Revolution, and James II's exile he faced charges of high treason and was forced to remain in seclusion for three years. During that time he wrote Some Fruits of Solitude, a collection of maxims on such subjects as marriage, family, friendship, religion, and the temptations of wealth. Licensed on May 24 1693, the aphorisms were published anonymously (to avoid the author's reimprisonment for disloyalty) and epitomize the simple Quaker truths upon which the Republic would be based, distilling the essence of Penn's spiritual idealism, combining it with practicality and common sense. On the death of Cardinal de Mendoza the queen appointed her new confessor, the famous Ximénès De Cisneros to the charge of Archbishop of Toledo. Alexander VI confirmed the appointment of the new prelate who suddenly proved to be the very zealous servant of the royal couple. He gave the order to requisition all the Muslim Enfants of Granada to better instruct them on Christianity. The Muslim population surrounded the house of the archbishop who resigned already expected to suffer martyrdom. The intervention of the royal troops freed the prelate. Cisneros argued that by revolting the Moors had themselves broken the pact concluded during their defeat. Nothing stood in the way of demanding their conversion now. Character known for his active participation in the Inquisition; very rubbed binding, lacks in caps, corners and nerves, some rednesses, some pages uniformly browned, fresh despite everything, fairly good condition. EVELYN, John - WAKE, William -
London: Printed for Ric. Sare at Grays-Inn Gate next Holborn. 1693. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. [viii], 196, [6], 9-547, [1] blank, [8] index; apart from a few minor marks in places, a clean crisp copy throughout; in contemporary sprinkled calf, spine tooled in gilt with red morocco label lettered in gilt, lightly rubbed to extremities; with john Evelyn's ink markings on front free endpaper, and the bookplate of Robert Hayhurst on front pastedown (see below); a very appealing copy. An interesting provenance and a direct connection between William Wake and the diarist and writer John Evelyn. 'During a period of convalescence after illness [Wake] produced a translation of the Genuine Epistles of the Apostolic Fathers, which was published in 1693. Although reprinted twice, this was not a work of original scholarship but of popularization, making available to English readers texts which helped to demonstrate that the Church of England in all respects comes the nearest up to the primitive pattern of any Christian Church at this Day in the World' (Genuine Epistles, vi). [ODNB] Evelyn heard Wake preach several times between 1687 and 1691 and noted in his Diary on the 19th March 1687 'din'd with the Bishop [Dr Ken of Bath & Wells], & that young, most learned, pious & excellent Preacher Mr. Wake at Dr. Tenisons, who invited me: In the After-noone, I went to heare Mr. Wake, at the New-built Church St Anns [Soho].' Probably, therefore, it was natural that Evelyn would acquire a copy of the Genuine Epistle and have it bound for his library. BOTTSCHILD, Samuel.
A B C.[Dresden and Augsburg or Nürnberg?], [Johann Christian Weigel?], engraved by Moritz Bodenehr, [1693?]. Oblong folio (unfolded 2-leaf sheets 37 x 29 cm). A series of 4 unnumbered engraved prints, with 6 images to a plate (each 52 x 52 mm), the first 23 showing an alphabet of roman capitals (A-Z without J, U or W), mostly with figures from classical Greek mythological, and the 24th showing a figure without a letter with what might be called the title: "A B C". [4] engraved ll. A rare and finely engraved complete alphabet of roman capitals with figures mostly from Greek mythology, conceived and drawn by Samuel Bottschild (1641-1706) in Dresden, where he was painter to the court of Johann Georg IV, Elector of Saxony, and from 1699 inspector of the Electoral art collection. The series was engraved by Moritz Bodenehr (1665-1749) in Dresden. The letters do not directly copy any known model, but they come closer to those in Geofroy Torys 1529 Champ fleury than to any other we have seen, with the straight strokes, the bracketing of the serifs and some curved strokes possibly executed with a ruler and compass, but the letters generally well-proportioned without a geometrical straightjacket. They owe little or nothing to Giovanni Cresci, whose alphabets of 1560 and 1570 influenced many later ones.In fine condition and with generous margins. Berlin Kat. 5291; Hollstein, IV, no. 141, items 51-54; not in Becker/Hofer, Practice of letters.

ARCHITECTURE. ITALY.
Italy:, 1693. Quarto:. Bound in contemporary vellum, soiled and with restored losses to the corners. The manuscript itself is in excellent condition with just a few defective leaves (f. 6 with loss of text, pp. 225-40 with outer margin and lower outer corner irregularly snipped away, minimally affecting the edges of a few drawings.) A fine, unpublished architectural manuscript with sections on mathematics, perspective, ballistics. Several prominent buildings are described and illustrated, including Rome’s Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo dei Senatori on the Campidoglio, Sant’Agnese, and the Villa Pamphili. The text is profusely illustrated with very precise architectural drawings in ink and wash. The author draws from the central authorities of Renaissance and Baroque architecture: Serlio, Vignola, Scamozzi, Andrea del Pozzo and some of his drawings are closely related to or derive from those authors’ published works, as well as the vedute of Falda. The architectural treatise is followed, in a different but apparently contemporary hand, by a treatise on harmonic proportions. (p. 245-268). Contents: Comparative table of different units of measure used in various parts of Italy as well as England, France, etc. (unsigned 1st leaf, recto). Lessons in geometry, including the use of the compass, increasing in complexity from two-dimensional to three-dimensional figures. (unsigned 1st leaf, verso -p. 8) Proportions of the five orders (beginning on p. 9) Proportions of ornamenti: column bases, pedestals, entablatures (cornices, friezes, arc … [Click Below for Full Description]
