- Selten.

         Citta di Venetia.

1693 - Venice, c.1693. Two sheets conjoined, total 490 x 770mm. Remargined at top, as usual with this large format plate. A magnificent, large-scale bird's-eye view of Venice, surrounded by armorials of the Venetian nobility on a garland, the Venetian lion top centre. This is an example of the first state (of three), still with the date of 1693 in the dedication roundel. This is a scarce map: it not appear in all of Coronelli's atlases and the examples that did were often damaged because of the large height and width. MORETTO: 114, first state of three, 'considered one of the most beautiful and appreciated Venetian maps'.

1693 - Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1693. Coloured. Two sheets conjoined, total 600 x 950mm. Repairs to edges and a split in map area. A superb sea chart of south-west England from the Scilly Isles to Portland, with an inset detail of the Scillies and prospects of Portland, Truro and Wolf Rock (half-way between the Scilly Isles and the Lizard, and a renowned maritime hazard). The chart appeared in one part of Mortier's 'Neptune François', titled 'Cartes Marines a l'Usage des Armées du Roy de la Grande Bretagne'. The nine charts of this section, all engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe, one of the foremost artist/etchers of the period, was described by Koeman as the 'most spectacular type of maritime cartography ever produced in 17th century Amsterdam'. Mortier's motives in the production of this atlas was to flatter the Dutch king on the British throne since the Glorious Revolution of 1688, William III, to whom it is dedicated. The unprecedented size of the atlas and the use of artists such as de Hooghe were not cheap: Again Koeman calls it the 'most expensive sea atlas' of the period, 'intended more as a show-piece than something to be used by the pilots as sea'. KOEMAN: vol 4. p. 423-4, M.Mor 5.

A NATURAL HISTORY CONTAINING MANY NOT COMMON OBSERVATIONS: Extracted Out of the Best Modern Writers.

Printed for R. Bentley, London 1693 - Pp. [16], 469, [3, ads]. Contemporary plain full panelled calf, rebacked at some point, god and strong, with a little general wear and some rubbing, corners more worn and rounded, but firm. Contents clean and tight; good margins; title page strengthened along hinge with Japanese tisse. Contemporary engraved armorial bookplate to the verso of the title page above which written in manuscript '11. Apr. 1728 Collated & perfect.' A very good copy. [As its subtitles suggest, this was a work of synthesis rather than direct and original observation. Blount was a tireless reader and accumulator of other writers’ wisdom - his most notable work, Censura Celebrorum Authorum (1690), was a collection of things famous authors had said about each other and in this work he brings together observations from a wide range of contemporary authorities, accommodating them in an overall argument which reflects a belief in the divine authorship of the universe. As he writes in his preface, ‘Every Flower of the Field, every Fibre of a Plant, every Particle of an Insect, carries with it the Impress of its Maker, and can (if duly consider’d) read us Lectures of Ethicks or Divinity’. Among the aspects of natural history(amber, coral, tea and coffee, silver, diamonds, glow-worms, spiders etc.) that Blount considers are ‘VULCANO’s, or SUBTERRANEAN FIRES’ - Admin (Dr Ralph Harrington); Volcanism Blog.] Size: 12mo (10 x 16cm) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Der Ninivitische Buß-Spiegel, Aus der Wunder-Geschicht Des Propheten Jonae, Vorgestellet, Durch Antenorn, einen Liebhaber des Worts Gottes (d.i. J. B. Schupp).

      - O.O., Dr. u. J. (Hamburg, Liebezeit?, ca. 1693). 478 S. Etwas späterer Leder mit Rückenschild u. Stehkantenvergoldung (etwas berieben, Vorsätze angestaubt u. fleckig). WITH FINE PLATES BY HOLLAR: The institution, laws & ceremonies of the most noble Order of the Garter.

London: printed for Thomas Dring, at the Harrow, at the corner of Chancery-Lane in Fleetstreet 1693 - Folio; [12], 720, [104] pp. In contemporary panelled full leather (with only the lightest of wear), respined and recornered in matching leather over six raised spine bands with gilt lettered title direct to spine in second compartment and gilt date to foot of spine. Portrait frontispiece by W.Sherwin and 15 plates by Wenceslaus Hollar (12 double-page, one with a small hole at inner fold), numerous additional woodcuts in-text. Two old ownership labels to front pastedown (engraved heraldic label of John Sneyd of Keele Hall, Staffordshire, and later label of Col. Philip Catt O.B.E), with front and rear pastedowns consisting of printer's waste (sheets from a roughly contemporaneous continental edition of Ovid). Additional earlier title page to the 1672 edition printed in red and black and bound between frontispiece and true title page. Small ink stain to bottom corner of additional title-page, occasional feint browning and unobtrusive stains but overall a clean and very attractive example. Written by Ashmole largely in the mid 1660's whilst staying in the country to avoid the plague in London, the Order of the Garter brings together his characteristic scholastic rigour with wonderful depictions by Wenceslaus Hollar including the celebrated aerial views of St.George's Windsor and the stunning engraving of a firework display at the investiture of Charles XI of Sweden in 1668. Very good copy of this most attractive edition. ESTC R497, citing 3xUS copies only. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

With and inset map: "Carte du Port de Kinsal en Irlande." (Map of the harbour of Kinsale in Ireland.) Fine large overview coastal map / seachart of parts of Ireland. Depth soundings are marked along the coasts, and sandbanks indicated It includes 5 distance scales, rhumb lines with three decorative compass roses. Engraving on handlaid (verge type) paper. Watermark: Eagle with lettering. "Description: From: 'La Neptune Francois [ ]', by Jaillot, published in Amsterdam by Pieter Mortier. First published in 1693-1708 as a result of an initiative by the minister Colbert. The charts in this Atlas are considered as some of the most beautiful printed charts ever produced. Map subsequently incorporated into the publications under Bellin for the Depot de la Marine. State: We do not know the exact ed. of this map. It lacks the Royal privilige on the early ed. and the seal of the Depot de la Marine on later ed. edited and published by Jacques Nicolas Bellin. Original full size Atlas sheet.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Alexis Hubert Jaillot'. Cartographer: Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712), was a French cartographer. He married the daughter of the 'enlumineur de la Reine', Nicholas Berey and inherited thus a map and print publishing firm. When Nicolas Sanson, the premier French cartographer of his days, died he negotiated to republish much of his work. He re-published many of Sanson's maps on a larger scale. His maps were admired for their beautiful cartouches. In 1686 he was awarded the title of Geographe du Roi by Louis XIV. Jailliot was succeed by his son, Bernard Jean Hyacinthe Jaillot (1673-1739), grandson, Bernard Antoine Jaillot (died 1749) and the latter's brother-in-law, Jean Baptiste-Michel Renou de Chauvigne-Jaillot (1710-1780). Publisher: Pieter / Pierre Mortier (1661-1711). The 18th century Dutch map trade could build on their reputation that originated from the Golden Age much longer than was assumed until now. The Amsterdam publishing company Covens & Mortier (1685-1866) has played an important part in this process. Most likely this company was the largest map trader of his days. Thousand of maps were brought on the market by Covens & Mortier, often edited from earlier sources and all members of this firm were gifted with a great commercial talent. Pieter and David Mortier were booksellers in Paris from 1681-1685 and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter's death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over in 1721. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes / Jean Covens and established the famous publishing house "Covens and Mortier" in Amsterdam. They have re-issued Atlases of Sanson, de l'Isle, Visscher and de Wit." Condition: Very good, given age. Original middle fold as issued. A few small tears in paper edges, backed. Some light staining / soiling. Some creasing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: Overasselt The overall size is ca. 36.2 x 24.4 inch. The image size is ca. 33.9 x 23.6 inch. The overall size is ca. 92 x 62 cm. The image size is ca. 86 x 60 cm.

Carte Generale des Costes D'Irlande, et des Costes Occidentales D'Angleterre avec une Partie de celles D'Ecosse

Levà e et Gravà e Pare Ordre Exprez du Roy, A. Paris, 1693. - Copper engraved with hand colour 595 x 855 mm A first edition of this impressive sea chart of Ireland and the western coasts of Scotland and England, with an inset map of River Dee at Chester from Le neptune François. Moriter's plates were later acquired by the French Depot De La Marine and republished. This is an early state of this map still retaining the Ordre du Roy and Paris 1693 publication line. Pieter Mortier (1661â€"1711) was an 18th-century mapmaker and engraver from the Northern Netherlands. Mortier was born in Leiden. According to Houbraken, David van der Plas worked with him on etchings for Bybelsche Tafereelen (Bible stories), published in Amsterdam in 1700. He was the father of Cornelis Mortier (1699-1783), who in partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) began the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). He travelled to Paris in 1681-1685 and won the privilege in 1690 of publishing maps and atlases by French publishers in Amsterdam. He used this privilege to win a similar set of privileges for printing an "illustrated print bible" in 1700. He died in Amsterdam. Condition: On two joined sheets as issued. Printer's crease lower left in rhumb lines. Time toning to verso. [Attributes: First Edition]
