A very good tight copy of a scarce work. First 3 words of title in Greek letters. "This is a malignant attack on Charles II, of unknown authorship, representing him as a Roman Catholic throughout. There are seventy-seven chapters, caricaturing the 'Eikon' and dealing with various episodes in the King's career, some of which have mock prayers at the end". See Madan, A New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike, page 111, No. 132. Pages 309-315 contain two papers, found in the strong box and published in 1686, setting out the King's reasons for turning Roman Catholic. Pages 316-320 contain an account of his death signed Jo. Hudleston. Images sent on request.

        America Septentrionalis

Amsterdam: Valk and Schenk, [circa 1694]. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. 18 1/2 x 24 inches. Rare issue of Hondius' important map of North America, here with full period hand colouring. "Henricus Hondius' beautifully engraved map of North America had greater influence than any other to date in perpetuating the theory of California as an island ... Cartographically, this map is a careful composition of many different sources and illustrates well the current state of knowledge" (Burden). Henricus Hondius was the son of the engraver and mapmaker Jodocus Hondius. Henricus continued the family's cartographical business in partnership with Jan Jansson, his brother-in-law. Mapmaking was more often than not a family enterprise in Amsterdam and in Paris in the 17th century. The firm was active under one family member or another for nearly the entire 17th century. This was the period of Dutch supremacy at sea, when, having supplanted the Portuguese in India, central Africa and northeastern Brazil, the Dutch were the prime carriers of spices, silks, furs, tobacco, sugar and slaves. It was not in the nature of things that this predominance could last very long, if only because the Netherlands is a very small country. But until the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 1660s and 70s, the Dutch were supreme, and the making of maps was a form of nationalistic journalism. First issued in 1636, the map appeared unchanged in various editions of the Hondius/Jansson atlas throughout much of the century. In 1694, "Petrus Schenk acquired all of the Atlas Major plates at public auction ... and began issuing the map with his own imprint. This last state is uncommon" (Burden). Beyond the change in imprint, this last issue is notable for the addition of hachured lines dividing the claims of France, Spain and England and with the hand-colouring reflecting those boundaries, which were quite changed from the preceding issues. This copy with glorious full contemporary hand colouring. Burden, The Mapping of North America 245 (state 3); McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 6; Goss, The Mapping of North America 30.

DE RE POETICA: or, Remarks upon Poetry. With characters and Censures of the most considerable poets, whether ancient or modern extracted out of the best and choicest criticks

London:: Ric Everingham for R. Bently,, 1694.. First Edition. 4to, pp. [xii], 129, blank, [2], 248. Bound in contemporary calf (some wear to the foredges), with later rebacking. Front blank loose, hinge tender, little foxing to the title-page, little soiling and small hole to the upper margin of B1, effecting a little of the running title, a very good copy. STC B3347; Jaggard p. 25; Wing B3347; not in CBEL. Blount (1649-1697) was a politician and author who acquired a high reputation for the extent and variety of his learning. He is most renowned for his Censura celebriorum Authorum, sive Tractatus in quo varia ... (1690). This was a bibliographical dictionary, a kind of record of the opinions of the greatest writers of all ages on one another. The DNB, in writing about that book notes that of great interest is not just whom Blount quotes, but whom he left out. Those who were slighted included many of the great poets of the day. The present work somewhat makes up for the slight, in that Blount first treats poetry in general and the different kinds of poetry and the relationship between the poetry of different European countries and the languages of each. The second part contains critical notices of sixty-seven poets of various ages and countries. Some of those omitted from the Censura ... are included here. This is one of the earliest critical notices of Shakespeare that had appeared in a book.

The work consists of "engraved gem illustrations mostly taken from the antique ... with annotations by Giovanni Bellori, the noted Italian antiquary... the text is little more than a factual explanation of the objects depicted, but the engravings are remarkable for 'relatively little detail' but done in a 'clever, fresh buoyant manner'" (Sinkankas quoting C. W. King, Antique Gems and Rings). The designs in Part I are mainly portraits of one kind or another plus some of animals, the designs in Part II are of gods, heroes and philosophers in various poses and activities plus some animals. All the plates have a title at the top and below the name of the gem on which they are carved (cristallo, onice, lapis lazzali etc). The designs are by Agostini and the engravings by Giovanni Battista Galestruzzi. Agostini (1593-1669) was born near Sienna and served as antiquary to Francesco Cardinal Barberini. He was appointed by Pope Alexander VII as superintendent of antiquities in the Papal States, and he directed in Rome the excavations of the Forum and of thermae near the church of San Lorenzo in Panisperna. Översättning av "Memoirs of what past in christendom, from the war begun 1672 to the peace concluded 1679" (1691), vilken rör krigen mellan England och Holland på 1670-talet. First Tollius edition. 4to, pp., [28], 408, [12]. Engraved title-page; Printed with Greek and Latin texts on facing pages, woodcut printer's device, ornaments and initials, full vellum backed marble boards with leather label. Upper margin along the hinge shows a water mark in the preliminary matter, o/w a very nice clean copy. Longinus was a Greek Platonic philosopher and rhetorician of the 3rd century AD. He studied in Alexandria and taught in Athens. He was beheaded by Emperor Aurelian in 273 A.D. but is remembered for his Philosophical Discourses, On First Principles, On the Chief End. His authorship of the present work is desputed. Praised by Dibdin and Gibbon, this edition of these commentaries on The Sublime by the anonymous author known as Longinus "is one of the greatest of all critical acheievements. An illuminating dissertation on style, accompanied by many penetrating judgements as well as suggestive pronouncements on critical standards and principles, the treatise is unique in its interpretation of the classical spirit, its compelling enthusiasms, its sanity, its freshness and its unerring insights into the essentials of art."(OCD).

An Account Of Denmark, As It was in the Year MDCXCII.

London 1694. Sm. 8vo. (24) + 172 pp. Later full speckled calf, spine with five raised bands. Last page with tear at edges slightly affecting text. Anonymously published. This edition has Roman numeral date in title; another edition has Arabic date. Rare pirate edition.. English diplomat and author. Born 1656, died 1725.From 1689 to 1692, Molesworth was emissary from the Court of St. James to the court of the King of Denmark - a task at which he was not particularly successful, making himself unpopular among the leading notables of the Danish court (due to ideological as well as personal disagreements - but also due to the ambiguous foreign policy that Denmark was pursuing in this period). In 1694, Molesworth published the book An Account of Denmark as it was in the Year 1692. The book was extremely critical of Danish absolutism, and of the perceived tyranny under which both the Danish army, church and general populace suffered. An Account of Denmark emphasised the values of the English electoral system as an attractive alternative to absolutism, and was thus a Whig political tract, which indirectly influenced later American ideas on independence.Molesworth's book was published in several editions, and in a number of languages. Several opposing tracts were published, with financial support from the Danish government

In 1670, after nomination by Prince William of Orange, Morton was created a Doctor of Medicine at Oxford, afterward establishing a practice in London. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians 9 years later, eventually becoming one of the physicians-in-ordinary to the King. This work, possibly inspired by William III's respiratory problems, was dedicated to William, and Ôestablished his reputation at home and abroad for over a centuryÕ; Ôduring the reign of Queen Anne it was one of the text-books advised for reading by the apprentices of the Society of Apothecaries by private tutors in anatomy and pathologyÕ. Herein, Morton broke "with the very widespread prejudice against the use of anatomical dissection as a means of improving medical knowledge. As a result he was Ôthe first to describe the characteristic enlargement of the thoracic glands, in particular the tracheo-bronchial and broncho-pulmonary groups that were later to be shown to be of great significance in the pathogenesis of the diseaseÕ" (ODNB, also Trail, as quoted by ODNB).

Splendid Wall Map of the World, by De Fer, an unrecorded edition. 1694 (1711). Paris. Henrik van Loon. The map has been rebacked with fresh linen. A number of repaired tears in the text panels, with minor restoration in several small spots with some loss to text in panels, and extensive restoration to margins. 1780 mm x 1220 mm. Unrecorded 1711 edition of Nicolas De Fer's monumental double hemisphere wall map of the World first published in 1694. De Fer's map is one of the most decorative wall maps of the World. First published in 1694, the map was periodically updated with the newest cartographic discoveries ?such updates were usually the result of explorations in the East and West Indies- over the next 4 decades. Engraved by Hendrik van Loon with decorative embellishments, designed and engraved by Nicolaus Guerard, the map is one of the most enduring and iconic French wall maps of the World and would have hung in the salons and libraries of the French aristocracy during the Reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. This early edition of the map shows California as an island and fascinating early depictions of Australia and New Zealand. In the interior of Africa, De Fer records imaginary rivers and mountain ranges shown by his predecessors. One of the Nile Tributaries is shown correctly coming from Lake Tana, but the other finds its source in the Sahara. De Fer states along the equator that it is better to leave this space blank rather than fill it with unknown and imaginary particulars. Along the top are pictures of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury, based upon Cassini and two plans of the sun and moon. The Hemispheres are surrounded by a lavishly engraved and decorative tableau, featuring gods and goddesses, zodiac & mythological scenery, amongst other subjects. The panels to the right and left borders give a historical description and an explanation of the ornaments of the map. The 1694 edition is know in the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris and in the Karlsruhe, Shirley could not find copies in British or American institutions. There were subsequent editions in 1705, 1717, 1730 and 1737; this edition, thus, unrecorded and early.

A La Haye: Chez Henry Van Bulderen, 1694. relié. In 12 (9x16,5cm). - Chez Henry Van Bulderen, A La Haye _1694, In 12 (9x16,5cm), (8) 448pp., relié. - relié

The Vanity of Arts and Sciences

London: printed by R. Everingham for R. Bentley, and Dan. Brown,, 1694. By Henry Cornelius Agrippa, Knight, Doctor of both Laws, Judge of the Prerogative Court, and Counsellour to Charles the Fifth, Emperour of Germany. Octavo (183 × 110 mm). Eighteenth-century sprinkled sheep, double green morocco labels, red morocco date label at foot, sides with double blind rules, red sprinkled edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece. Early ownership inscription at head of title ("Strathnaver", courtesy title of the heir of the earl of Sutherland). Spine worn at head, joints starting at foot but holding firm, an excellent copy. Third edition of the second English translation of Agrippa's De incertitudine et vanitate scientiarum (Antwerp, 1530), first translated into English by James Sanford (1569, repr. 1575), succeeded by this new seventeenth-century translation in 1676, 1684, and 1694. A highly influential work of Renaissance scepticism, De incertitudine et vanitate scientiarum is intended to bring the reader to a position of Christian fideism, though one in which Christian faith is thoroughly infused with Hermetic and Kabbalistic motifs. Agrippa's scepticism about science centres on the point that the senses are too often deceived; therefore "the way of truth is shut up from the senses", and sciences rooted in them are "uncertain, erroneous and deceitful". Appeals to authority are no more acceptable, as the scholastics reply to any questioning of their first principles with torture and execution of so-called heretics. "[A]t the beginning of the era of natural science, it is one of the first testimonials to knowledge of the limits of human understanding" (DSB). "Agrippa's most sustained piece of satirical and polemical writing, this work was frequently reprinted and widely quoted - by, among others, later sixteenth-century religious radicals … Montaigne's scepticism, which represents man as 'naked and empty, acknowledging his natural weakness, apt to receive from above some strange power, disfurnished of human knowledge, and so much the more fit to harbour divine understanding, nullifying his judgment so as to give more place to faith' (1580), is clearly indebted to Agrippa's De vanite" (Routledge encyclopedia of philosophy).
