Histoire Des Diables De Loudun: Ou De La Possession des Religieuses. Ursulines. Et de la condamnation & du suplice. D'Urbain Grandier Cure de la meme Ville

Abraham Wolfgang, Amsterdam 1694 - French text throughout The case of the Loudun demons, a witch hunt launched by Cardinal Richelieu in 1630 , against the Catholic priest Urbain Grandier. Recently rebound in brown leather with gilt title label to spine, new endpapers and red and white headbanding. The title page is marked and repaired to edges and mounted on matching but heavier paper for strength. First and last couple of leaves have been repaired to extreme edges with Japanese tissue, Book was probably without boards for some time in the past, hence the damage to first and last few leaves, there are also a few other historic repairs none of which impact the text. As might be expected in a book of this age there is the occasional mark and a couple of annotations - a single line in ink marking a paragraph on pages 4, 7 & 8 and light browning to pages edges but otherwise the text block is in remarkably good condition, incorrect page numbering at leaf numbered 189 which is numbered 192 to verso.         Truth brought to light: or, the corrupt practices of some persons in court laid open.

4to., title printed within double-ruled border, viii 23 (1)pp., contemporary mottled calf, rubbed, corners worn, neatly rebacked. A very good large copy. Of naval interest, with a proposal for an Act of Tunnage, whereby coastal vessels would be charged a fixed rate per ton to the Collector of each port, and all outward bound ships, except colliers, going either to Holland, Flanders, Portugal, Denmark, or Ireland, would pay twelve pence per ton. However, if any of the latter were taken by the enemy before their voyage were complete, they were to have this money paid back. Inward bound ships, either English or foreign, would pay two shillings per ton, unless they were not fully laden, in which case deductions would be made. The author thought that the abolition of the Receivers-General, who were allowed to take a portion of the taxes they collected, would be beneficial to the finances of the country, but he concluded that since he could get no one at Court to listen to him, there was a party of corrupt persons who controlled everything.

ACTS AND LAWS, PASSED BY THE GREAT AND GENERAL COURT OR ASSEMBLY OF THEIR MAJESTIES PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY, IN NEW-ENGLAND

Boston: Printed by Bartholomew Green, 1694. FIRST EDITION n. Enacted during legislative sessions from 8 November 1693 to 14 February 1694, the laws included in these 12 pages relate to "the better Rule and Government of the Indians in their several Places and Plantations"; "the Relief of Id[i]ots and Distracted Persons"; restraining the export of skins out of Massacusetts Bay and the "Preservation & Increase of Deer in the said Province"; the licensing and regulation (including periodic inspection) of "Innholders, Taverners, and common Victuallers," who, among other things, must not "suffer any Person to Drink to drunkenness" or serve "any Apprentice, Servant, or Negro"; the selection of "Tythingmen" (and their fitting out with a brass-tipped staff of office) as well as their duties; and various rules covering municipal offices and public revenues. It is revealing that two acts here relate specifically to wood, an essential commodity for all levels of society: a law of significant length spells out the penalties for stealing a neighbor's wood or timber, and it is stated that a cord of wood must measure eight by four by four feet (and be forfeited if sold falling short of this). Also of interest as a reflection of social prejudice is a law that discusses penalties for receiving stolen goods--but only when accepted from an "Indian Servant, or Negro, or M[u]latto Servant or Slave." Similarly prejudicial, the laws governing Indians deal at length with penalties relating to selling them "strong drink" and to their conviction of drunkenness. The laws dealing with persons "naturally wanting of understanding" or being "Impotent or Distracted" are entirely sympathetic, calling for public relief and support whenever such a person or a person's relatives cannot provide the wherewithal for the needs of daily living.. 295 x 170 mm. (11 1/2 x 6 3/4"). [2], 49-60 pp. FIRST EDITION. New sympathetic sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine labels. Title page with the oval stamp of the New York City Bar Association Library. Shipton & Mooney 694. Light browning and spotting because of inferior paper quality, but the text showing few signs of use, and the retrospective binding unworn. Lisbon, Officina de Miguel Manescal, Impressor do Principe Nosso Senhor, 1694.. FIRST EDITION. 4°, contemporary limp vellum (rather worn, upper half of spine defective), remains of ties. Typographical headpieces. Woodcut initials. Woodcut tailpieces. Some waterstaining. Honest, complete, and unsophisticated, in very good condition. Occasional contemporary ink manuscript annotations in margins as well as on the front free endleaf verso and rear free endleaf recto. (18 ll.), 224 pp. The two leaves of the index, bound here before the main text, are sometimes found bound at the end of the volume. *** FIRST EDITION of the FIRST SCIENTIFIC BOOK TO DESCRIBE YELLOW FEVER, BY THE FIRST EUROPEAN PHYSICIAN TO TREAT THE DISEASE, WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE FIRST AUTOPSY OF A YELLOW FEVER VICTIM. The author received his medical training at Coimbra and practiced for many years in Recife. There was speculation that he may have been a native of that Brazilian city, where he had the opportunity to see the first epidemics of the malady, then referred to as "o mal da bicha". If Ferreira da Rosa was in fact born in Brazil, this would be the first scientific book by a Brazilian author. The book is arranged as a series of questions: What are the signs of this disease? Is it better to bleed the patient from the arm or the foot? Should one apply blisters? How should the parotid glands look? An early owner of our copy made marginal notations of certain recipes and added occasional cross-references. A substantial early note on the front flyleaf cites an article in the @Gazeta of 1716 that mentioned Vigier's @Thesouro Apollineo, calling it a very useful book and noting where it can be purchased. Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 747-8: "The book is not only of the greatest rarity but also of great scientific importance.… Ferreira da Rosa submits here the first known accurate and clear observation on yellow fever ... This is obviously a precious book not only concerning the history of Brazilian medicine, so destitute in medical books of the colonial period, but also for the history of medicine in general. … Very few copies are recorded of this extremely rare book." In the first edition of his @Bibliographia Brasiliana, Borba de Moraes says he was able to locate only three copies, in the Biblioteca Nacional of Portugal, the Biblioteca Nacional of Brazil, and the Oliveira Lima Library of the Catholic University of America, in Washington. According to Porbase, there are three copies in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal; the entry in Porbase cites only 16 preliminary leaves. Upon inspecting the three copies, we found that one was badly wormed (affecting the text) and missing the two leaves of the index. The other two copies are complete and in reasonable condition. The copy at the Biblioteca Nacional of Brazil is reportedly in poor condition. The Oliveira Lima Library copy is missing two preliminary leaves. There are also copies in the British Library, the National Library of Medicine, the New York Academy of Medicine, the library of the Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa, and that of the Escola Medico-Cirurgica do Porto (apparently incomplete). The John Carter Brown Library recently acquired a rather shabby, unappealing copy missing two preliminary leaves. The only complete copy besides the present one we have seen on the market since 1969, when we began to track such things, was sold in Paris, 24 June 1976 in the so-called "Ferreira das Neves" sale (albeit washed and rebound); it is now in the Bosch collection. We have also seen two incomplete copies in commerce, the one now in JCB that lacks two leaves, and another, in much better condition overall but missing one preliminary leaf, that was sold by us to a Spanish collector in 1974. *** Garrison, @History of Medicine, fourth edition, p. 272. Borba de Moraes (1983) II, 747-8 (citing only 14 preliminary leaves, with the two index leaves following the text); see also Borba de Moraes (1958) II, 216-7. Innocêncio III, 372-3 (without collation; obviously cited without ever having seen the book); X, 252 (correcting the incorrect transcription of the title given in volume III after having been able to see only a defective copy belonging to Rodrigues de Gusmão, which lacked the licenses, dedication, prologue, index and "mais quatro peças"). Sacramento Blake III, 428-9 (saying that Ferreira da Rosa was born in Pernambuco; giving incomplete collation). Arouca R555. Barbosa Machado II, 658. Pinto de Matos (1970) pp. 290-1. Sabin 73167 (transcribing the title from Innocêncio, and mentioning only the copy in the British Library [then the British Museum]). @Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine, XLVIII (1972), 1343-5. @Dictionnaire des Sciences Médicales XV (Paris 1816), 334, 371. Lima Leitão, @Discurso pronunciado … da Sociedade das Medicas de Lisboa no dia 12 de mayo de 1839; Registo medico p. 9: "Os exemplares d'esta edição são tão raros, que só tenho noticia de um, que pertence á Biblioteca Publica d'esta Côrte." Bosch 153. "Ferreira das Neves" (i.e., Jacques Renout) sale 239. Goldsmith F154. Lisbon, Faculdade de Medicina, @Catálogo da colecção portuguesa I, 260-1. Pires de Lima, @Catalogo da Bibliotheca da Escola Medico-Cirurgica do Porto 3552 (inexplicably stating "229 + [29] pp."; our best guess is that there are really 224 pp. + 14 unnumbered ll.). @Rarest Books in the Oliveira Lima collection 112 (with only 17 preliminary leaves). Monteverde 2358 (appears to have been the second most expensive book in the sale). John Carter Brown Library, @Rare Americana. A Selection of One Hundred and One Books, Maps and Prints @Not in the John Carter Brown Library 61. Not in Rodrigues. Not in Mindlin @Highlights. Not in @Brasiliana Itau. Of the twenty or so most important Portuguese auction sales since that of Sir Gubián in 1867, we were able to locate this work only in the Monteverde catalogue; not located in Sir Gubián, Nepomuceno, Moreira Cabral, Fernandes Thomaz, Azevedo-Samodães, Ameal, Ávila-Pérez, etc. See also Ferreira de Mira, @História da medicina portuguesa, pp. 178, 258; and Santos Filho, @História geral da medicina brasileira pp. 41, 86, 171. Porbase locates three copies, all in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (but two of which lack the final 4 unnumbered pp.). Copac repeats only the British Library copy. Not located in Hollis or Orbis. Not located in NUC.

Avec les Arrests du Conseil, Des Parlements, & Autres Cours SUperieurs, Donnez en Consequence, Utiles & Necessaires Ausdits Curez. Rouen: Chez Pierre de la Motte, 1694. [ii], 3-82, [10] pp. Final page blank. 12mo. (5-1/4" x 3"). Contemporary limp vellum, recent black-stamped title to spine. Light soiling, light rubbing to extremtities, later owner bookplate to front pastedown. Light toning to text, early owner inscription to foot of title page. A nice copy of a rare title. * First Rouen edition of this guide to the rights nad duties of parish priests, compiled from decisions of parliament and the secular and ecclesiastical courts. Everything related to the role of the cure is included: where he can live, how much he can earn, his duties regarding marriages, baptisms, funerals and his everyday duties, as well as his relationship with secular authorities and diocesan hierarchy. We also find more arcane regulation, including a prohibition on the ringing of church bells after the death of a parishioner and the maintenance of the furniture in his house. A significant section deals with financial matters and the administration of benefices. Borjon de Scellery was the author of several legal works, and a number of poems, but is perhaps best known today as a writer on music, his Traite de la Musette (Lyon, 1672) was one of the most important works on the instrument. OCLC locates no copies of this edition, and records no copies of any edition outside of France. Not in Camus.

ORBIS COELESTIS TYPUS STELLARUM RATIONE MAGNITU - DINIS DIFFERENTIAM DELINEA - TIO

H 1500 - Diam. 900

An ecclesiastical history, ancient and modern, from the birth of Christ to the beginning of the present century: In which the rise, progress, and variations of Church power are considered in their connexion with the state of learning and philosophy, and the political history of Europe during that period.

Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1694-755) was a professor of theology at Göttingen and his Institutiones historiae ecclesiasticae "was marked by hitherto unprecedented objectivity and penetration, and he may be considered the first of modern ecclesiastical historians" (ODCC). First published in 1726, this work was originally composed in Latin; Archibald Maclaine made this first of two translations into English in 1764.Of this first, 1797 American edition, vols. II-VI were printed 1798-99. Printed with ample notes, it has a series of chronological tables at the end. An eight- page Vindication of the Quakers disputing Mosheim's view of that denomination is also appended at the end of vol. VI, just before the list of subscribers. These latter include such noted names as John Adams, then President of the United States, and John Jay, then governor of New York.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

S.l.n.d. , 36 pp. - II. Second discours qui tente des consones. S.l.n.d., 24 pp. - III. Lètre sur l'ortografe, écrite en 1694.         Al-Coranus s. lex islamitica Muhammedis, filii Abdallae pseudoprophetae [.].

Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze & Benjamin Schiller, 1694. - 4to. (90), 560 [but p. 255f. repeated], (10) pp. Latin title printed in red and black; one Latin and two Arabic (woodcut) half-titles. Preface in Latin, text in vocalized Arabic throughout. Contemp. half calf with marbled covers and giltstamped label to sparsely gilt spine. The famous "Hamburg Koran": while not actually (as it was long considered) the first printed Qur'an ever, the first accessible printed edition of the Arabic text. Only in 1987 was a unique copy of Paganino de Paganinis's Venetian edition (c. 1538) rediscovered, a work whose press run either was destroyed immediately or was limited to the sole surviving specimen, apparently a proof copy (cf. A. Nuovo, "Il Corano arabo ritrovato", in: Bibliofilia LXXX, IX, 1987). Four years after the present edition, in 1698, Lodovico Marracci produced his own Qur'an, but its two big tomes were anything but easy to consult - hence, the Hamburg Koran remained "the only available and handleable" (Smitskamp) edition until the early 19th century. - Abraham Hinckelmann (1652-95), a Hamburg theologian, studied at Wittenberg and collected many Oriental manuscripts. He compiled a Quranic lexicon in manuscript and planned a Latin translation of the Koran, but this was never realised. - Some browning throughout, as common due to paper; slight waterstaining near end. Ms. ownership of Joseph Venturi in Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin ("emit Romae An. 1789") on Latin title (his quotation from Brunet on first Arabic title), with early 19th c. ownership of Blasius Milani. This is the uncommon variant with two different woodcut Arabic titles. Schnurrer 376. Smitskamp, PO 360. Fück 94. Le Livre et le Liban 135f. Woolworth 279. Brunet III, 1306. H.         A New Discourse of Trade,

London: Sam Crouch, Tho. Horn, & Jos. Hindmarsh, , 1694. wherein is Recommended several weighty Points relating to Companies of Merchants. The Act of Navigation. Naturalization of Strangers. And our Woollen Manufactures. The Ballance of Trade. And the Nature of Plantations, and their Consequences in Relation to the Kingdom, are seriously Discussed. And some Proposals for erecting a Court of Merchants for determining Controversies, relating to Maritine [sic] Affairs, and for a Law for Transferrance of Bills of Debts, are humbly Offered. Octavo (166 × 94 mm). Recent calf period style, gilt lettered spine, red speckled edges. Housed in a custom-made, silk-lined pale brown calf solander box. With the bookplate (loosely inserted) of the German-British sociologist Ralf Dahrendorf (1929-2009). A very good copy, with the terminal blank leaf [S8]. First published in 1690 as A Discourse about Trade; ESTC describes this as a reissue, with a cancel title page, of the edition of 1693. It includes Sir Thomas Culpeper's A Small Treatise against Usury (pp. 217-36). "In 1690 [Child (c.1631-1699), economic writer and merchant] published under his own name the comprehensive Discourse about Trade, which included his Proposals for the Relief and Employment of the Poor, which had appeared earlier as an undated pamphlet. This work was reprinted in 1693 under the title A New Discourse on Trade to coincide with a new attempt in parliament to reduce the legal maximum rate of interest... Child acquired considerable fame as an economic writer in his own day and was both widely read and frequently quoted. His works were reprinted continuously during the eighteenth century and published in French in 1754. He exerted influence because of his fluent and persuasive pen, his debating skills, and his obvious success in and experience of business" (ODNB). As Geoffrey Poitras notes "Child is another of the truly remarkable individuals populating the early history of financial economics. Child has some status as a noteworthy, pre-Smithian economist... His status as Governor of the East India Company was matched by his stock trading acumen" (The Early History of Financial Economics, 1478-1776, 2000, 322).

A compleat history of druggs, written in French by Monsieur Pomet, chief druggist to the present French King; to which is added what is further observable on the same subject, from Messrs. Lemery, and Tournefort, divided into three classes, vegetable, animal and minera ...

First edition of the first appearance in English of Pomet's famed catalogue of pharmaceuticals, originally published in French in 1694. In his capacity as "Chief Druggist to the late French King Lewis XIV," Pomet (1658-99) gained a highly favorable reputation for his knowledge and use of botanical and other drugs, and in 1694 he presented as much of his knowledge as he thought wise in his Histoire générale des drogues. This English edition adds material from the works of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) and Nicolas Lémery (1645-1715), and was translated by Joseph Browne (1673-1721), a Lincoln College-educated physician and satirist.Highly influential in its time, this materia medica covers botanical, zoological, and mineral sources and is illustrated with => 86 etched plates, mostly with four specimens per plate; but there are also full-page images of a silk factory, a fishery, and of "negro's [sic] making Roucou." Other plates are of unicorns, whales, rhinos, and elephants. The volume is printed in roman type with some italic in double-column format, with its plates close to the texts that refer to them; the main title-page and that of vol. II are printed in red and black. The => Americana content is noteworthy, with discussion of cacao, chocolate, "long American pepper," tobacco, and so on. Two surprising sections are devoted to glass manufacture and achieving color in glass, and soap making. Provenance: Front pastedown with small ex-libris reading "Wisdom of God in Creation" on a garter, encircling a portrait, with a heraldic lion above. Front free endpaper with attractively inked inscription: "Worcestershire Natural History Society / Presented by O.J. Floyd, Esq. / March 11th 1848"; endpaper and first few leaves with pressure-stamp of Worcester Public Library.

Document Signed, 1 page folio on vellum with the papered seal intact (age-worn with a some holes slightly affecting the text, a little faint), Breda, 22 May 1694.

      - Countersigned in the lower left hand corner by William Blathwayt (ca 1650-1717). A commission, in the name of the king and queen, but signed by William alone, for Constantine Egan as ensign of the 'Company and Regiment of Foot Commanded by Our Trusty and Welbeloved Colonel Richard Ingoldsby'. Signed during William's long drawn out campaign in Flanders against Louis XIV's expansionary ambitions. Despite being in a 'grand alliance' with Scotland, Austria, Spain Savoy and many German states, William's forces suffered many setbacks between 1690 and the signing of the treaty of Ryswick in September 1697.William had extended the twelfth-century castle of Breda between 1686 and 1695, and it is likely that the present document was signed there. Oxford DNB records that William Blathwayt, when employed as a young man at the embassy at The Hague, was the only official who knew Dutch, and it was for this reason that Blathwayt, as acting secretary of state accompanied William to Flanders.

Truth brought to light: or, the corrupt practices of some persons in court laid open. Whereby Their Majesties, and the Kingdom, have been prejudiced near one hundred and fifty thousand pounds this year; besides other evils that have and do attend it.

London, printed in the year, 1694. 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, viii + 23 + (1)pp., contemporary mottled calf, rubbed, corners worn, neatly rebacked. A very good large copy. First edition. Wing C.7247. Kress S.1804. Goldsmiths 3026. Massie 1250.

      - Copper engraving by Johan Baptist Homann, with contemporary hand colouring. A rare map of the land of plenty, fools paradise or Pays de Cocaigne. originally published in 1694. The map was printed three times, in 1694, around 1730 and around 1740. This is probably from the last edition, around 1740. Schlaraffenland was the Utopia of German legend. In the children’s version of this, sausages grow on trees and tables set themselves. This cartographic version is a much darker version, with a "Kingdom of Extravagence", and "Empire of Fat Stomachs", "Tobacco Island" and the "Land of Gluttony". All of this is surrounded by the seas of Drunkeness and Lust. The cartouche has a scene of debauchery and carnal excess. The map is in good, clean and tidy condition. The colouring is typical of the German style of colouring. The shading is quite pale / in pastel tones, and I suspect it may have faded over time. The bottom edge of the map has been trimmed quite closely to the engraving (but there is no loss). The rear of the map shows some sign of support / restoration, but on the whole, the map is in good clean condition, with a clear impression.
