Decisons Des Matieres Qui Regardent Les Curez, Avec les Arrests du.

1694 - A Rare Legal Handbook for French Priests Borjon De Scellery, Pierre [1633-1691]. Decisons Des Matieres Qui Regardent Les Curez. Avec les Arrests du Conseil, Des Parlements, & Autres Cours SUperieurs, Donnez en Consequence, Utiles & Necessaires Ausdits Curez. Rouen: Chez Pierre de la Motte, 1694. [ii], 3-82, [10] pp. Final page blank. 12mo. (5-1/4" x 3"). Contemporary limp vellum, recent black-stamped title to spine. Light soiling, light rubbing to extremtities, later owner bookplate to front pastedown. Light toning to text, early owner inscription to foot of title page. A nice copy of a rare title. * First Rouen edition of this guide to the rights nad duties of parish priests, compiled from decisions of parliament and the secular and ecclesiastical courts. Everything related to the role of the cure is included: where he can live, how much he can earn, his duties regarding marriages, baptisms, funerals and his everyday duties, as well as his relationship with secular authorities and diocesan hierarchy. We also find more arcane regulation, including a prohibition on the ringing of church bells after the death of a parishioner and the maintenance of the furniture in his house. A significant section deals with financial matters and the administration of benefices. Borjon de Scellery was the author of several legal works, and a number of poems, but is perhaps best known today as a writer on music, his Traite de la Musette (Lyon, 1672) was one of the most important works on the instrument. OCLC locates no copies of this edition, and records no copies of any edition outside of France. Not in Camus. [Attributes: First Edition]

ORBIS COELESTIS TYPUS STELLARUM RATIONE MAGNITU - DINIS DIFFERENTIAM DELINEA - TIO

H 1500 - Diam. 900

An ecclesiastical history, ancient and modern, from the birth of Christ to the beginning of the present century: In which the rise, progress, and variations of Church power are considered in their connexion with the state of learning and philosophy, and the political history of Europe during that period.

Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1694-755) was a professor of theology at Göttingen and his Institutiones historiae ecclesiasticae "was marked by hitherto unprecedented objectivity and penetration, and he may be considered the first of modern ecclesiastical historians" (ODCC). First published in 1726, this work was originally composed in Latin; Archibald Maclaine made this first of two translations into English in 1764.Of this first, 1797 American edition, vols. II-VI were printed 1798-99. Printed with ample notes, it has a series of chronological tables at the end. An eight- page Vindication of the Quakers disputing Mosheim's view of that denomination is also appended at the end of vol. VI, just before the list of subscribers. These latter include such noted names as John Adams, then President of the United States, and John Jay, then governor of New York.

Litanie de NOTRE DAME DE LORETTE, HISTORIEE PAR LE JARDIN DES OISEAUX ; LATIN ALLEMAND GOTHIQUE ; MAGNIFIQUE RELIURE PEAU DECOREE ET ESTAMPEE A FROID. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Important book on antique art in the enlarged second edition in Folio in Latin language, two vols, bound in one volume.

S.l.n.d. , 36 pp. - II. Second discours qui tente des consones. S.l.n.d., 24 pp. - III. Lètre sur l'ortografe, écrite en 1694. S.l.n.d., 14 pp., un feuillet blanc. - IV. [Remarques sur l'orthographe]. S.l.n.d., 13 pp., un feuillet blanc. - V. Suite des essais de grammaire. S.l.n.d., 51 pp. - VI. Sur l'ortografe françoise. S.l.n.d., 20 pp. - VII. Des Principales parties du discours. S.l.n.d., 14 pp., un feuillet blanc. - VIII. Des Parties du verbe. S.l.n.d., 64 pp. - IX. S.l.n.d., 23 pp. - XI. Des Particules. S.l.n.d., [2]-11 pp. - XII. Des prépositions. S.l.n.d., 11 pp. - XIII. Sur la préposition après. S.l.n.d., 4 pp. - XIV. Sur le mot quelque. S.l.n.d., 5 pp., un feuillet blanc. - XV. Sur le mot quelqu'un. S.l.n.d., 3 pp. - XVI. Utilité de la table du verbe canto. S.l.n.d., 23 pp., un feuillet blanc.         Al-Coranus s. lex islamitica Muhammedis, filii Abdallae pseudoprophetae [.].

Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze & Benjamin Schiller, 1694. - 4to. (90), 560 [but p. 255f. repeated], (10) pp. Latin title printed in red and black; one Latin and two Arabic (woodcut) half-titles. Preface in Latin, text in vocalized Arabic throughout. Contemp. half calf with marbled covers and giltstamped label to sparsely gilt spine. The famous "Hamburg Koran": while not actually (as it was long considered) the first printed Qur'an ever, the first accessible printed edition of the Arabic text. Only in 1987 was a unique copy of Paganino de Paganinis's Venetian edition (c. 1538) rediscovered, a work whose press run either was destroyed immediately or was limited to the sole surviving specimen, apparently a proof copy (cf. A. Nuovo, "Il Corano arabo ritrovato", in: Bibliofilia LXXX, IX, 1987). Four years after the present edition, in 1698, Lodovico Marracci produced his own Qur'an, but its two big tomes were anything but easy to consult - hence, the Hamburg Koran remained "the only available and handleable" (Smitskamp) edition until the early 19th century. - Abraham Hinckelmann (1652-95), a Hamburg theologian, studied at Wittenberg and collected many Oriental manuscripts. He compiled a Quranic lexicon in manuscript and planned a Latin translation of the Koran, but this was never realised. - Some browning throughout, as common due to paper; slight waterstaining near end. Ms. ownership of Joseph Venturi in Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin ("emit Romae An. 1789") on Latin title (his quotation from Brunet on first Arabic title), with early 19th c. ownership of Blasius Milani. This is the uncommon variant with two different woodcut Arabic titles. Schnurrer 376. Smitskamp, PO 360. Fück 94. Le Livre et le Liban 135f. Woolworth 279. Brunet III, 1306. H.         A New Discourse of Trade,

London: Sam Crouch, Tho. Horn, & Jos. Hindmarsh, , 1694. wherein is Recommended several weighty Points relating to Companies of Merchants. The Act of Navigation. Naturalization of Strangers. And our Woollen Manufactures. The Ballance of Trade. And the Nature of Plantations, and their Consequences in Relation to the Kingdom, are seriously Discussed. And some Proposals for erecting a Court of Merchants for determining Controversies, relating to Maritine [sic] Affairs, and for a Law for Transferrance of Bills of Debts, are humbly Offered. Octavo (166 × 94 mm). Recent calf period style, gilt lettered spine, red speckled edges. Housed in a custom-made, silk-lined pale brown calf solander box. With the bookplate (loosely inserted) of the German-British sociologist Ralf Dahrendorf (1929-2009). A very good copy, with the terminal blank leaf [S8]. First published in 1690 as A Discourse about Trade; ESTC describes this as a reissue, with a cancel title page, of the edition of 1693. It includes Sir Thomas Culpeper's A Small Treatise against Usury (pp. 217-36). "In 1690 [Child (c.1631-1699), economic writer and merchant] published under his own name the comprehensive Discourse about Trade, which included his Proposals for the Relief and Employment of the Poor, which had appeared earlier as an undated pamphlet. This work was reprinted in 1693 under the title A New Discourse on Trade to coincide with a new attempt in parliament to reduce the legal maximum rate of interest... Child acquired considerable fame as an economic writer in his own day and was both widely read and frequently quoted. His works were reprinted continuously during the eighteenth century and published in French in 1754. He exerted influence because of his fluent and persuasive pen, his debating skills, and his obvious success in and experience of business" (ODNB). As Geoffrey Poitras notes "Child is another of the truly remarkable individuals populating the early history of financial economics. Child has some status as a noteworthy, pre-Smithian economist... His status as Governor of the East India Company was matched by his stock trading acumen" (The Early History of Financial Economics, 1478-1776, 2000, 322).

A compleat history of druggs, written in French by Monsieur Pomet, chief druggist to the present French King; to which is added what is further observable on the same subject, from Messrs. Lemery, and Tournefort, divided into three classes, vegetable, animal and minera ...

First edition of the first appearance in English of Pomet's famed catalogue of pharmaceuticals, originally published in French in 1694. In his capacity as "Chief Druggist to the late French King Lewis XIV," Pomet (1658-99) gained a highly favorable reputation for his knowledge and use of botanical and other drugs, and in 1694 he presented as much of his knowledge as he thought wise in his Histoire générale des drogues. This English edition adds material from the works of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) and Nicolas Lémery (1645-1715), and was translated by Joseph Browne (1673-1721), a Lincoln College-educated physician and satirist.Highly influential in its time, this materia medica covers botanical, zoological, and mineral sources and is illustrated with => 86 etched plates, mostly with four specimens per plate; but there are also full-page images of a silk factory, a fishery, and of "negro's [sic] making Roucou." Other plates are of unicorns, whales, rhinos, and elephants. The volume is printed in roman type with some italic in double-column format, with its plates close to the texts that refer to them; the main title-page and that of vol. II are printed in red and black. The => Americana content is noteworthy, with discussion of cacao, chocolate, "long American pepper," tobacco, and so on. Two surprising sections are devoted to glass manufacture and achieving color in glass, and soap making. Provenance: Front pastedown with small ex-libris reading "Wisdom of God in Creation" on a garter, encircling a portrait, with a heraldic lion above. Front free endpaper with attractively inked inscription: "Worcestershire Natural History Society / Presented by O.J. Floyd, Esq. / March 11th 1848"; endpaper and first few leaves with pressure-stamp of Worcester Public Library.

Truth brought to light: or, the corrupt practices of some persons in court laid open. Whereby Their Majesties, and the Kingdom, have been prejudiced near one hundred and fifty thousand pounds this year; besides other evils that have and do attend it.

London, printed in the year, 1694. 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, viii + 23 + (1)pp., contemporary mottled calf, rubbed, corners worn, neatly rebacked. A very good large copy. First edition. Wing C.7247. Kress S.1804. Goldsmiths 3026. Massie 1250. Of naval interest, with a proposal for an Act of Tunnage, whereby coastal vessels would be charged a fixed rate per ton to the Collector of each port, and all outward bound ships, except colliers, going either to Holland, Flanders, Portugal, Denmark, or Ireland, would pay twelve pence per ton. However, if any of the latter were taken by the enemy before their voyage were complete, they were to have this money paid back. Inward bound ships, either English or foreign, would pay two shillings per ton, unless they were not fully laden, in which case deductions would be made. The author thought that the abolition of the Receivers-General, who were allowed to take a portion of the taxes they collected, would be beneficial to the finances of the country, but he concluded that since he could get no one at Court to listen to him, there was a party of corrupt persons who controlled everything.

      - Copper engraving by Johan Baptist Homann, with contemporary hand colouring. A rare map of the land of plenty, fools paradise or Pays de Cocaigne. originally published in 1694. The map was printed three times, in 1694, around 1730 and around 1740. This is probably from the last edition, around 1740. Schlaraffenland was the Utopia of German legend. In the children’s version of this, sausages grow on trees and tables set themselves. This cartographic version is a much darker version, with a "Kingdom of Extravagence", and "Empire of Fat Stomachs", "Tobacco Island" and the "Land of Gluttony". All of this is surrounded by the seas of Drunkeness and Lust. The cartouche has a scene of debauchery and carnal excess. The map is in good, clean and tidy condition. The colouring is typical of the German style of colouring. The shading is quite pale / in pastel tones, and I suspect it may have faded over time. The bottom edge of the map has been trimmed quite closely to the engraving (but there is no loss). The rear of the map shows some sign of support / restoration, but on the whole, the map is in good clean condition, with a clear impression.

Venice: 1694. - Giovanni Tommaso Minadoi (1549-1615) was an Italian physician and historian who studied at the University of Padua. He practiced in Rovigo and Venice. In 1578 Teodoro Balbi, the newly elected Consul in Syria, offered him the opportunity to travel with him to Aleppo as his personal physician. In Syria he gathered materials to write his account of the war between Sultan Murad III and Mohammad Hodabanda the Blind. He returned to Venice in 1583, but went back to Syria in 1584, remaining there for two years, during which he also spent time in Constantinople. He married Lucia Cezza di Bartolomeo in 1587, a member of one of the richest families in Rovigo. He was a colleague of Galileo Galilei, who described him as jovial, pleasant and honest. (See Viquipdia, the Catalan-language version of Wikipedia). This history is well regarded as a first hand account of the war against Persia between 1578 and 1590. Although Turkey made and retained conquests in Georgia and Azerbaijan, her own historians have criticized her for weakening not only Turkey but also Persia and Daghestan, which facilitated Russia's future expansion at their expense.         America Septentrionalis

Amsterdam: Valk and Schenk, 1694. Copper-engraved map, full period hand-colouring. Rare issue of Hondius' important map of North America, here with full period hand colouring. "Henricus Hondius' beautifully engraved map of North America had greater influence than any other to date in perpetuating the theory of California as an island ... Cartographically, this map is a careful composition of many different sources and illustrates well the current state of knowledge" (Burden). Henricus Hondius was the son of the engraver and mapmaker Jodocus Hondius. Henricus continued the family's cartographical business in partnership with Jan Jansson, his brother-in-law. Mapmaking was more often than not a family enterprise in Amsterdam and in Paris in the 17th century. The firm was active under one family member or another for nearly the entire 17th century. This was the period of Dutch supremacy at sea, when, having supplanted the Portuguese in India, central Africa and northeastern Brazil, the Dutch were the prime carriers of spices, silks, furs, tobacco, sugar and slaves. It was not in the nature of things that this predominance could last very long, if only because the Netherlands is a very small country. But until the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 1660s and 70s, the Dutch were supreme, and the making of maps was a form of nationalistic journalism. First issued in 1636, the map appeared unchanged in various editions of the Hondius/Jansson atlas throughout much of the century. In 1694, "Petrus Schenk acquired all of the Atlas Major plates at public auction ... and began issuing the map with his own imprint. This last state is uncommon" (Burden). Beyond the change in imprint, this last issue is notable for the addition of hachured lines dividing the claims of France, Spain and England and with the hand-colouring reflecting those boundaries, which were quite changed from the preceding issues. This copy with glorious full contemporary hand colouring. Burden, The Mapping of North America 245 (state 3); McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 6; Goss, The Mapping of North America 30.

- 2. Giovanni Tommaso Minadoi (1549-1615) was an Italian physician and historian who studied at the University of Padua. He practiced in Rovigo and Venice. He discusses and extensively illustrates the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Composite (here called Roman) and Corinthian orders of column, along with doorways, arches, facades, etc., using them. Other illustrations show fireplaces, a church interior and exterior, geometrical diagrams, ornaments, etc.Ad 2: Rare Dutch edition of one of the most popular books on the art of perspective, by the engraver, publisher and expert on fortifications Henricus Hondius the elder (1573-1650). "The book provides a series of neatly conceived demonstrations of perspective in its abstract and applied forms and gives an original if brief analysis of the upwards convergence of tall verticals to a 'contre-poinct' when viewed with a plane tilted slightly toward the spectator" (Kemp, p. 112). The Bosboom lacks 1 text leaf, but both works are otherwise in good condition, with some mostly marginal stains and some marginal restorations. The binding has been rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. Two 17th-century classics on architecture and perspective..

Clean English text throughout ending with an advertisement (Rabbi Moses...) on p. 304. Rear free endpaper with numerous pencil references relating to this book. Referenced by: Wing F2064; Westwood & Satchell, p.100-101. * "Richard Franck (1624?-1708) was a captain in the parliamentary army and author. Franck was born and educated at Cambridge. Franck left England for a tour in Scotland around 1656 or 1657. He returned to Nottingham, where he seems to have lived for many years. About 1690 he went to New England, where his second book was written, and in 1694 was in London at the Barbican. The book Northern Memoirs for which Franck is known is a specimen of euphuistic literature, and includes the quote: "Art imitates Nature, and Necessity is the Mother of Invention." After much front matter, it is in the form of a dialogue between Theophanes, Agrippa (a servant), Aquila (a friend), and himself, under the name Arnoldus. 'Northern Memoirs' was written in 1658, put together in 1685, but not published until 1694. Its main interest centres in the places which Franck visited in Scotland, and the account of them which he gives. His route was by Carlisle and Dumfries to Glasgow; thence to Stirling, Perth, Forfar, and Loch Ness; then Sutherlandshireand Caithness, Cromarty, Aberdeen, Dundee, St. Andrews, Edinburgh, and Berwick. He made his way home by Morpeth. Franck was the first to describe salmon fishing in Scotland, and both in that and trout-fishing with artificial fly he was a practical angler. He had read the Compleat Angler; he tells us that he had argued with Isaak Walton about pickerel weed breeding pike. He is the first angler to name the burbot, and commends the salmon of the River Thames. Franck's second book was 'A Philosophical Treatise of the Original and Production of Things. Writ in America in a time of solitude,' London, 1687. The running head title of the work is 'Rabbi Moses.' It is written in the same high-flown language as Northern Memoirs. Franck may also have written 'The Admirable and Indefatigable Adventures of the Nine Pious Pilgrims ... to the New Jerusalem. Written in America in a time of Solitude and Divine Contemplation. By a Zealous Lover of Truth . . .' London (Morphew), 1708. The introductory matter is signed 'Philanthropes' as in Franck's other books." - See Wikipedia . ** The full title reads: 'Northern Memoirs, calculated for the Meridian of Scotland. Wherein most or all of the Cities, Citadels, Sea-ports, Castles, Forts, Fortresses, Rivers, and Rivulets are compendiously described. Together with choice Collections of various Discoveries, Remarkable Observations, Theological Notions, Political Axioms, National Intrigues, Polemick Inferences, Contemplations, Speculations, and several curious and industrious Inspections, lineally drawn from. Antiquaries and other noted and intelligible Persons of Honour and Eminency. To which is added the Contemplative and Practical Angler by way of Diversion,' with more of the same character. 'By Richard Franck, Philanthropus. Plures necat Gula quam Gladius, 1694.' .
