The Anatomy of Humane Bodies Epitomized. Wherein All the Parts of Man's Body, with their Actions and Uses, are succinctly described...

London:: T. W. for Awnsham & John Churchill, 1694.. 8vo. Collation: A-Z8, Aa-Rr8, Ss4. Pagination: [16], vi, 626 pp. 18 FULL-PAGE ANATOMICAL ENGRAVED PLATES. Contemporary paneled calf; spine restored, title-label chipped, binding rubbed and scuffed with some surface leather loss, corners bumped, hinges reinforced along endpaper stubs, front hinge cracked nonetheless. Armorial bookplate of “William Wass” with name struck out and other signatures [William Crockley Sampson Clapham, [and] Charles [& E.?] Clapham, Guy's Hospital, 1866, and 1827) on front free endpapers, leather stains to borders of endpapers, ink stains on title page, edge wear, creases, foxing and browning; else in very good condition. Fourth edition, “Corrected and Inlarged both in the Discourse and Figures.” The all-encompassing content of this text is divided into six books, starting with sectioning the human body into three “cavities” I: (lower) the Abdomen, II: (middle) the Thorax, III: (highest), the head, including hair, brain, cerebellum, nerves, parts of the face, eyes, IV: of the veins, arteries, nerves and limbs, V: Concerning all the muscles of the body, VI: of the bones (including teeth). And finally, book VI: cartilage, ligament, and “of the nails”. The penis plate (facing p. 170) VIII shows three manuscript notes, showing that (probably Clapham) the owner of the book was studying the prostate gland and the anatomy of the urethra. The engraved plates are fine enhancements to the text. Good detail is shown for the cerebellum (plates XIV, XV), taking from Willis. Relating to the eye Gibson cites Briggs as a source. Clearly this anatomy is intended for everyday use by the student and practitioner as it is hand-held and relatively convenient for its size and handling of the human anatomy on a pocket-size scale. ¶ Thomas Gibson (1648/9-1722), physician. “Gibson was admitted a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians on 26 June 1676, and became an honorary fellow on 30 September 1680. He was a Presbyterian, and a visit which he and his second wife paid to his nephew John, provost of Queen's College, Oxford, is sourly described by Hearne. Gibson's religion and connections to the Cromwell family led to his being removed from the list of fellows of the College of Physicians when the college received a new charter under James II in 1687. After 1688 Gibson was reinstated and on 21 January 1719 he was appointed physician-general to the army. Gibson published The Anatomy of Humane Bodies Epitomized (1682; 6th edition, 1703), compiled for the most part from Alexander Read's work.” [ODNB] ¶ Provenance: William Crockley Sampson Clapham (fl. 1866-1922), worked at Guy's Hospital borough, London.

- First Edition? A similar edition was published on the same date by the same publisher, but in a slightly larger format, with a different snack, a flagship of different title and without title page red and black. This edition may be a counterfeit. A frontispiece representing Harlequin. Uncommon. Vellum half later. Smooth spine with respect to the red pen. Arlequiniana, which remains a literary curiosity, belongs to a prominent genre of French literature, born in the late seventeenth and flourishing in the first half of the eighteenth it comes to these collections of jokes or stories pleasant or Ana which can be entered with the birth in 1693 Menagiana This kind has the distinction of staging his own author and dialogue with the reader, it seems to have no other purpose than to entertain as it seeks to educate because in this age of censorship, literature created this seemingly light but satirical critique of society and manners mode. Charles Cotolondi wrote several books in this field, including Evremonmania. Harlequin, thanks to the famous theater of the Fair in Paris became very famous and was a kind, and it is deliberately Cotolondi actually a kind of wise fool, like a Scapin for Molière. The set is a series of conversations that combines stories and jokes. A table of strong caustic materials retrieves all subjects, death, Cardinal Mazarin, caution husbands or Mr. Lully. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale ?

Paris: Jean Anisson, 1694. Second edition, folio, pp. [112], 740, [12], 100, [2]; Caseneuve's Les Origines Francoise with separately printed title-p. and prelims; full contemporary calf, gilt spine; joints starting, top and bottom of spine chipped, internally clean, binding sound. First published in 1650 in 4to, and enlarged to folio in 1694. Menage (1613-1692), "a man of vast erudition and keen intuition," was one of the few in his day who had first hand knowledge of Old French and the early stages of other Romance languages (which he had gleaned from his studies of law and early legal documents) and was uniquely qualified to carry out such an etymological undertaking. But his sarcasm lead to his expulsion from the French Academy; he had many enemies and "suffered under the satire of Moliere and Boileau" (see Holmes, History of the French Language, 1938, p. 90; and Ency. Brit., 11th ed).

Hebrew title] Bibliotheca Latino-Hebraica sive de Scriptoribus Latinis: [with] Avventus Messiae a Iudaeorum Blasphemiis, ac Haereticorum Calumniis vindicatus

Rome Propaganda Fide 1694 - Carlo Giuseppe Imbonati, Cistercian, orientalist, biographer, theologian, born at Milan, flourished in the latter half of the seventeenth century. He occupied the chairs of theology and Hebrew in Rome and was raised to the dignity of abbot. A pupil of Giulio Bartolocci, member of the same order and projector of the "Bibliotheca magna rabbinica", the earliest account of Hebrew literature in its rabbinic phase, Imbonati eventually became his master's collaborator and on his demise he completed and edited the fourth volume (Rome 1693) of this monumental work, which, laid the foundation for Wolf's "Bibliotheca hebraica" and similar works. This, the supplementary fifth volume, gives, under 1,319 numbers, 2,166 works written in Latin on rabbinic subjects, and also contains a "Chronology of Sacred Scripture" and two dissertations of an apologetico-polemical character (viz., on the Messias, and on the Divinity and Humanity of Christ) based upon miscellaneous Hebrew, Greek, and Latin writings. Contemporary vellum, rather soiled, over card boards. Some leaves spotted, a few browned. A very good copy. Bookplate of the Library of the Metropolitan Church of Westminter, with duplicate stamp. First edition Two parts in one volume, folio, pp. [xv (including half-title)], 549, 277, [iv], engraved portrait of the author by Hub. Vincent after Franc. Andreonus.

        America Septentrionalis

Valck & Schenk edition of the earliest separate map of the North America to appare in any Dutch Atlas, first published by Hendrick Hondius in 1636/39, then by Janssonius and often included in the composite Visscher and Allard atlases. In 1694 Petrus Schenk acquired all of the Atlas Major maps at public auction, and began issuing the map with his own imprint. This last state is uncommon. Shortly, after 1700 he relaced the map with a new one based upon the more advanced geography of Guillaume de L'Isle. Fine original colouring, light brown paper, good conditions.

- VERY RARE EDITION, dated 1706, not described by SHIRLEY - Rare 1706 edition of Nicolas De Fer's monumental double hemisphere wall map of the World, first published in 1694. De Fer's map is one of the most decorative wall maps of the World which is reasonably obtainable to a collector. First published in 1694, the map was periodically updated with the newest cartographic discoveries over the next 4 decades. Engraved by Hendrik van Loon, with decorative embellishments designed and engraved by Nicolaus Guerard, the map is one of the most enduring and iconic French wall maps of the World and would have hung in the salons and libraries of the French aristocracy during the Reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. There are 2 known copies of the 1694 map in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and one in Karlsruhe. Shirley was unable to locate any examples in British or American institutional collections, and gave the map an RRR, the highest level of rarity. Shirley notes editions of 1705, 1717 (text dated 1720), 1730 and 1737. Danet began publishing t [Attributes: First Edition]

Gabriel Daniel (1649 - 1728) born in Rouen, was a French Jesuit scholar, author of books on history, philosophy and religion. In this book, called a romance by the translator and sometimes classed as science fiction, he visits the moon and explores the cosmos of rotating vortices hypothesized by Descartes circa 1640, a cosmos recently confirmed by studies of the origins of the solar system, of spiral galaxies, and of accretion disks around black holes. Pere Daniel's efforts are directed to satirising the Cartesian system and theories. ESTC R29697. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

He primarily focused on human error and the existence of God within human nature. This edition also includes his “Treatise on Nature and Grace.” This work was written with the sole purpose of generalizing, clarifying, and commenting on God’s miracles and actions toward man. The book was eventually placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1690 after disputes over its contents couldn’t be settled. John Locke is known to have described Malebranche as “an acute and ingenious author” but obviously, not everyone saw his work in such light.         An Essay upon Reason, and the Nature of Spirits.

Printed for John Dunton 1694 - FIRST EDITION, with one diagram in the text, some page numerals (at top) cropped, minor browning at the end pp. [vviii, lincluding initial blank], 280, 8vo, modern calf backed boards, armorial bookplate of Edward Hoare preserved from old binding. Burthogge 'dedicated two philosophical works to Locke, evidently seen as a prestigious ally. An Essay upon Reason, and the Nature of Spirits begins with an effective restatement of his idealism, emphasizing the role of categorial concepts and making some use of Lockean argument. There are interesting suggestions as to the nature of consciousness, leading into a somewhat Spinozistic, "harmoniously" speculative panpsychism, which was further defended in 1699. In the last years of both their lives Burthogge corresponded with Locke, whose commentary on St Paul adopts the interpretation of Romans 8: 28-30 (a major source of the doctrine of the elect) argued for in Burthogge's last work, published in 1702 . Burthogge has received some recognition by historians of philosophy, both in the past, as by Sir William Hamilton and Ernst Cassirer, and in recent work. But it has been summary and in passing, generally with emphasis on his 'anticipation' of Kant or, less commonly, of Locke. His thought deserves fuller consideration, however, both as an illustration of what modern idealism owed to error theory and toleration theory, and for his revealing, strangely compelling arguments themselves - in their simplicity, at least, in sharp contrast to Kant's' (Michael Ayers in ODNB). Jean Yolton, in the Introduction to her Bibliography of Locke remarks that a chapter on books dedicated to Locke (as in Fulton's Boyle) 'would be very short', and points out that Burthogge's Of the Soul of the World, though addressed to Locke is not in fact dedicated to him. Prijs: ?7.250,- (incl. lijst).

""Beast fables,"" starring anthropomorphic denizens of the animal kingdom, have long entertained and instructed young audiences—and more than a few older ones, as well. The trickster folk hero Reynard the Fox has, since as early as the 12th century, proven a particularly popular star of children's tales. In his earliest adventures, which circulated orally throughout Europe (both France and Germany claim the character as their own), Reynard served as a vehicle for satirical, grown-up attacks on the nobility and the clergy. ""Satire, of course, means nothing to the very young, yet the spectacle of beasts talking and behaving like human beings has always fascinated them when it is well presented"" (Meigs et al., 33). A medieval Latin poem as well as a 1479 Dutch served important early printer William Caxton as sources for the first English translation of Reynard's adventures, published in 1481. Philosopher John Locke, in Some Thoughts Concerning Education (1693), commended both Reynard and Aesop as pedagogically valuable volumes, since they contained ""stories apt to delight and entertain a child, [which] may yet afford useful reflections to a grown man"" (Darton, 17). Scholars generally credit John Shirley with the present version. Shirley produced a History of Reynard ""in heroic verse"" in 1681 (DNB). The epic tale ""is thoroughly amusing with its characterization of the clever animal who outwits all the rest— the resourceful Reynard who keeps getting the better of every creature who is sent against him"" (Meigs et al., 33). First published in 1650. Printed in Gothic type, with explanations of the stories' morals and meanings in marginal glosses. The second and third titles in this issue are the first editions of 1681 and 1684, respectively. With 76 woodcut illustrations including a few repeated blocks, signed with initials ""E.B.""
