Nouveau Voyage de la Terre Australe , contenant Les Coûtumes & les Moeurs des Australiens?

Claude Barbin, Paris 1693 - Duodecimo, 177 pp., title-page just shaved at fore-edge, edges untrimmed; an attractive copy in crushed brown morocco by Sangorski. Lost among the "Australiens" Scarce seventeenth-century Paris edition of one of the most significant of all imaginary voyages, with clear links to the wider literature of travel and a connection with Quiros. The "south land" is used as the setting for this remarkable work of fiction, 'perhaps the most famous of all the fictitious accounts of Terra Australis' (Mackaness) and 'a major utopia, rich in satire and iconoclasm' (Gibson). Of particular note is the fact that Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first work to use the term to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent. Foigny (circa 1630-1692) had a turbulent life. A promising career as a Franciscan monk was scotched by his 'licentious behaviour' and he was forced to flee to Geneva and Protestantism. Scandal continued to dog him while he was in Switzerland, and he was forced to leave in 1684 leaving behind a large family and a pregnant maid. Foigny rejoined the Catholic faith, and died in a convent eight years later. In this marvellous novel the hero Sadeur is twice kidnapped and four times shipwrecked, ultimately being plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which drops him on the shores of Western Australia. Most of the novel is set in western Australia and openly borrows from Dutch voyages in the region, but the hermaphrodite society Sadeur discovers is entirely Foigny's invention; in this Australian world marked by a rational rejection of the body, Sadeur's curiosity and levity about the topic is considered very de trop, yet worse his 'propensity to unseemly arousal' (Rees).

With engraved title-page and 22 engraved portraits, maps and plans, partly by Jan and Casper Luyken (8 double-page). (30),232; 242; 94,(16) pp.* First and only edition. - 'Daniel Havart travelled to the Indies for the Zeeland chamber of the VOC in 1672. He stayed there from 1672 to 1685 on the Coromandel coast. His book is a standard work on the Coromandel coast and the VOC factories there' (Landwehr, VOC, 559). For a long time the Dutch East India Company was the most powerful trader in India before it became an English colony. This book gives much valuable information on the Dutch on the long eastern coast of India. 'Havart's Op- en ondergang van Coromandel is still an indispensable source for the study of Coromandel and Golconda, in the latter half of the seventeenth century. While it is sometimes mentioned in modern bibliographical and historiographical lists and essays, scholars of the twentienth century have generally ignored it or have used it only superficiall. Not only does Havart add considerably to general knowledge of the region, as for example by his excellent description of Hayatnagar, but he also provides a corrective to the usual, and overly heavy, reliance of modern scholars on the writings of Tavernier and Thévenot. Havart's Dutch contemporaries were better informed' (Lach, Asia in the making of Europe, III, p.1094). - Extremely rare; in fine condition.Tiele 458; Cat. MANTOISSA Codicis Juris Gentium Diplomatici ex recensione G. G. L.

Hannover, Literis & impensis Samuelis Ammonii (sumptibus Gotfridi Freytagii, Bibliopolae Hanover & Guelfebytani), 1693-1700.. Folio. Kollation: Ttlbl., 15nn.Bll., 479 S. VORGEBUNDENES Werk: a. Caspar KLOCK, Tractatus de aerario, Nürnberg 1671.

        Some Thoughts Concerning Education

London: A. & J. Churchill, 1693.. London:: A. & J. Churchill,. 1693.. Second edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Locke writes to his friend Edward Clarke, his thoughts on education, "Tis what makes the great difference in Mankind: The little, and almost insensible Impressions on our tender Infancies, have very important and lasting Consequences" (p2). The Contents of the Sections appears at the back of the volume, and begins with "Alteration" and ends with "Writing". Small 8vo, v, 262pp, Contents (ii). Handsomely rebound in period style in full calf, the text bright and extremely clean. This is the second edition, with "Patronage." on leaf A3v, line 19. & & A milestone in education theory and is now considered one of the earliest expressions of the principals of modern developmental psychology. Locke advanced three principal theories; that the talents and abilities of a child should dictate that child's education rather than strict curriculums and the threat of the rod; physical and emotional health were essential to the intellectual development of children; and that exercise and play were a vital part of a child's overall education. In addition, Locke also argued the need for pictures in books for children; images are vital in the learning process, providing reference points for memories. It was published in 53 editions in the 18th century alone.

The main states controlled by the Guelphs were Bologna, Brescia, Crema, Genoa, Mantua, Orvieta and Perugia. The conflict between the Guelph and Ghibbelline states, which was initiated by the Investiture Conflict of 1075, was one of the major international issues of the time. It was not resolved until the 15th century. This work saw a second edition in 1747. Copies of both editions are scarce. OCLC locates 8 complete copies of the first edition in North Americ

Hinges with small tears, corners sl. bumped, 2 backs cracked, some repairs to bindings, but strong bindings and firm bookblocks apart from the first quire of the first volume, which is loosening. Artisti Italiani in Austria, Abb 5.6.7. Seltenes monumentales Blatt der Wiener Pestsäule (Dreifaltigkeitssäule) am Graben mit ausführlicher Widmung an Kaiser Leopold I. Zu Anna Beek siehe Wurzbach, Niederl. Künstler, I,68.

Augsburg, Anton Nepperschmid for Jakob Enderlin, 1693.. Folio (305 x 190 mm). (2), 61, (1) pp. Title page printed in red and black. With 11 (instead of 18?) plates containing 22 copper engravings. Modern boards.. Fascinating, little-received geographical study focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, then under Ottoman rule. The anonymous late 17th-century German author hides behind the name of "Philo Cosmographus" and is evidently identical with the "Philo Chronographus" who produced the similarly themed chronographical work, "Arca Temporum", which was often issued together with this, though produced by a different publisher and catalogued separately. The present work features an overview of the geography of the Ottoman Empire, including the Aegean, the Sea of Marmara, and the Black Sea region - the "three seas" to which the title refers. Numerous pages of plates (each page containing two copper engravings) depict maps and views as well as animals (a hyena and sheep, Iraklion and Chania, Nauplia, Koroni, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Izmir, etc.). - The number of plates, and indeed even the arrangement of engravings on a single page, varies from copy to copy, but this wants 8 plates as compared to the table of plates provided in "Arca Temporum". Occasional inkstains, but well-preserved. - VD 17, 7:688727L; 3:605737C. Weller, Pseud. 439.

Modern boards.. Fascinating, little-received chronographical study focusing on the history of the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, then under Ottoman rule. The anonymous late 17th-century German author hides behind the name of "Philo Chronographus" and is evidently identical with the "Philo Cosmographus" who produced the similarly themed geographical work, "Trinum Marinum", which is announced on the title page and was often issued together with this, though produced by a different publisher and catalogued separately. The first part of the work contains a general introduction which relates the 24 hours of the day to the time from Creation to the year 1800 (which is conceived of as the end of the world, leaving another mere 107 years of history to come!). The second part features a chronicle of the "Rule of the Ottoman Porte", from Sultan Osman to Suleyman II. - Numerous pages of plates (each page containing two copper engravings) depict costumes, animals and plants, maps and views of towns (Sultan Osman, the Ottoman Residence and a view of Constantinople, dolphins and cranes, Turkish ladies in their various garments, a cypress and a mastix tree, etc.). - The number of plates, and indeed even the arrangement of engravings on a single page, varies from copy to copy, but this wants 4 plates as compared to the table of plates.
