BOYLE, Robert; [LOCKE, John].
Awnsham and John Churchill, London, 1692. First edition of this rare posthumously published work on the nature of gases, seen through the press by Boyle?s friend John Locke and containing some of Locke?s own early meteorological observations. The product of Boyle?s life?s work on gases, the General History ?is of special interest in that it sums up his ultimate conclusions? (Fulton, Boyle, p. 133). The work is of considerable importance in the history of science ? not only did the views Boyle expressed here become the basis for the phlogiston theory of combustion, it also contained the first clear statement of the kinetic theory of gases, almost half a century before Daniel Bernoulli?s Hydrodynamica. Only two other copies of Boyle?s work have appeared at auction in the past 25 years. ?The book begins with an excellent definition which deserves to be quoted (p. 1): ?By the Air I commonly understand that thin, fluid, diaphanous, compressible and dilatable Body in which we breath, and wherein we move, which envelops the Earth on all sides to a great height above the highest Mountains; but yet is so different from the Aether [or Vacuum] in the intermundane or interplanetary Spaces, that it refracts the Rays of the Moon and other remoter Luminaries.? He then discusses the ingredients of the air, prefacing his remarks by the following prescient sentence (p. 3): 'I much suspect there lies yet something concealed in it, that needs a further Discovery, which may perhaps be made by further Trials,? It seems then not improbable to me', he goes on to say, ?that our Atmospherical Air ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

LE CLERC, Jean
Awnsham & Johan. Churchill, 1692. FIRST EDITION Separate title for the Ontologia. Contemporary calf, boards ruled in blind, rebacked with the original backstrip laid down; an excellent copy. First edition of Le Clerc's revision of the Port Royal Logique from a Protestant, Remonstrant perspective. The Remonstrants are Dutch Protestants who, in 1610, presented to the States of Holland and Friesland a remonstrance in five articles formulating their points of disagreement with Calvinism. Like the Logique, this work deals with concept (idea), judgment, reasoning and method. Much of the work is anti-Cartesian and supports Locke's theories of rationality. The present work was written as a textbook for his own students in Amsterdam, and was used at Cambridge as a standard text for many years, going through five editions by 1716. Le Clerc was a confirmed rationalist. He believed that the fundamentals of Christianity are capable of demonstration. "Scripture must be rationally interpreted; one cannot believe what conflicts with rational truths, and doctrines over which rational men disagree are not essentials of faith." He opposed Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, and Leibniz because their theories claim knowledge beyond human ideas. Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736), a Swiss Protestant by birth, was one of the outstanding figures in Anglo-Dutch intellectual history. He had a major influence on eighteenth-century French philosophy. He championed rational religion, which was later widely accepted, and was also the first disciple of John Locke, whose work he introduced to Continental audiences. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Villavicencio, Diego Jaimes Ricardo.
Imprenta de Diego Fernandez de Leon, 1692. Personal experience among various indigenous people of differing regions of Mexico sets this treatise apart from the garden variety of other books by Villavicencio's contemporaries on surviving pre-Contact religious practices. One normally searches hard to find information on religious practices among the late 17th-century Chocho speakers of Oaxaca and Veracruz, for example, but some interesting tidbits can be found here -- though the greatest portion of the volume is dedicated to practices among the various Nahuatl-speaking peoples, as they were viewed by Europeans as the norm for pre-Conquest practices. In fact, there is a confessionary in Nahuatl that speaks specifically to indigenous practices on pp. 11-19 of the second pagination. In addition to supplying firsthand practical information about native post-Contact survivals (e.g., the lengthy list found on pp. 49 and 50, second pagination, of sacrifice practices and superstitions that the Church frowned upon), the author displays considerable erudition on the subject of pre-Contact practices based on a huge body of published information, all of which is carefully documented. 17th-century Mexican imprints are ever increasingly difficult to find, and those produced in Puebla (as opposed to Mexico City) are the most difficult of all. This important treatise is => only the second complete copy we have had in our stock in more than 30 years of dealing in Mexicana. Curiously, there are two issues of this sole edition. After the work was printed but before all copies were sold o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blancard, Stephan (d.i. Blankaart, Steven).
Besitzeintrag. – VD17 23:243202P. Vgl. Weller 1108 (holländ. EA). Nicht bei Garrison/Morton. [Attributes: First Edition]

First edition in English. Translation (by T. Taylor) of VOIAGE DU MONDE DE DESCARTES (1690). "One of the earliest interplanetaries of all, based on the theories of Descartes; Spirit voyages to the Moon, peopled by those passed on from their lives on Earth, and then to a cosmos operated on Cartesian principles. Most of the latter part of the book is in the form of an illustrated dissertation." - Locke, Voyages in Space 006. "... the aim of the work is to spread the information about the principal philosophical debates of the time ... Nonetheless, the use of the narrative expedient of the voyage to the Moon is an interesting device which places Daniel in the sixteenth-century tradition of Wilkins, Godwin and Cyrano (to whom specific reference is made). - Fortunati and Trousson (editors), Dictionary of Literary Utopias, pp. 673-4. London: Printed by Thomas Hodgkin ..., 1692. [12],264,281-368,371-2,371-382,393-744,[4]pp. Folio (signed in 4s; 14.5 x 9.25"; 368 x 237mm). Modern paneled dark brown calf, raised bands, gilt spine labels, with earlier gilding to all edges. Engraved portrait of Jonson engraved by Elder after Vaughn. Portrait and title a bit foxed, inky marginal smear to E31r; some old spotting to C2-4, 3A4 and 4C4-4D4; 3C1-2 on inferior paper (and tanned, as usual); top edge of 3Y3 shows a bit of slight fraying; other occasional marginal smudges, dusting or trivial spotting; otherwise, generally a very good, crisp copy. Third (and last) folio edition, but the first in one volume, adding "The New Inn" and "Leges Convivales," which were not included in the collected editions of 1616 and 1640. The characteristic poor paper and tanning of 3C1-2 often extend to 2Z2-3, which are here relatively unblemished. The final two leaves are turned over to the "Leges Convivales," with its own title and imprint. This copy, although in a modern binding, measures somewhat larger than the Hagen-Pforzheimer copy, which is noted as in original calf. ESTC R15282. PFORZHEIMER 561.

DRYDEN, John
(1692). DRYDEN, John. CLEOMENES, THE SPARTAN HEROE. A Tragedy, as it is acted in the Theatre Royal. To which is prefixt The Life of Cleomenes. London: Printed for Jacob Tonson ..., 1692. First edition. Quarto. A4,a2,*B- *C4,d-e4,B-K4. 21.5 x 16.5 cm. [12],28,[4],72 pp. In a shelfworn Roxburghe-style binding: black quarter leather with marbled paper sides, gilt-stamped spine title. One leaf (*C4, pp. 15-16 in `The Life') has a 9 cm horizontal closed tear near the bottom edge. The top of the running title on p. 43 (G2r) is shaved. Otherwise some mild age-staining and spotting throughout, and in very good condition overall. This was the next to the last of Dryden's plays to be produced. Owing to Dryden's illness, the fifth act of the play was completed by Thomas Southerne. The life of Cleomenes was translated from Plutarch by Thomas Creech. It is believed that the revival of some of Shakespeare's Roman plays about this time turned the attention of both playwrights and public to classical themes. [Click Below for Full Description]
