Title-page printed in red and black. All edges sprinkled red. Contemporary full vellum with giltstamped title label to spine. Rare second German edition of the history of Vienna by the physician, cartographer and philosopher Lazius (1514-65), originally issued in Latin and "considered the first scholarly history of Vienna" (cf. Durstmüller), as well as "the basis of further research on town history" (cf. Czeike). Translated by the headmaster of a Viennese school, Heinrich Abermann (1583-1621), the first German edition appeared in 1619, rendering Lazius's work quite popular. The chronicle is organised in four books, treating, inter alia, the origins of the city's name, its role as a seat of nobility and bishops, as well as its rulers and administration. In addition, the chronicle lists office holders, such as town councillors and judges, but also mentions catastrophes such as city fires. Also includes annotations to each book, as well as an index. The engraved title-page shows a portrait of Emperor Leopold I, the saints Stephen and Leopold, and a city view of Vienna. Bound with the chronicle are a few additional handwritten pages: 8 pages listing bishops of Vienna between pp. 62f. of book III, and 2 pages listing city treasurers between pp. 46f. of book IV. With 18th century ownership by Theodor Hase "and friends" ("Theodori Hasaei D. et Amicorum") to the title-page. - Binding slightly stained, s … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Complete Pamphlet as Removed from The Collected Works. ******* ALL OF THE DOCUMENTS THAT I SELL ARE ORIGINAL *** I DO NOT SELL MODERN RE-PRINTS ******* *Note: I'm offering an Original 17th Century John Bunyan complete 'Catechism' (Q&A). I know that only a select few will even be interested at the price listed. However, consider this; another copy of this same book from which this 'pamphlet' has been removed was previously offered for sale at $12,500.00 I'm not aware of any other copies on the market as they are quite rare. Here's a great opportunity to add this incredible historical document to your collection! Author of the Famous Christian Classic 'The Pilgrim's Progress'. 1692 JOHN BUNYAN COMPLETE CATECHISM "Printed, and to be Sold by William Marshall at the Bible in New-gate street. 1692 (LONDON)" John Bunyan (28 November 1628 - 31 August 1688) was an English Christian writer and preacher, who is well known for his book The Pilgrim's Progress. Though he became a non-conformist and member of an Independent church, and although he has been described both as a Baptist and as a Congregationalist, he himself preferred to be described simply as a Christian. He is remembered in the Church of England with a Lesser Festival on August 30, and on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (US) on August 29. Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress in two parts, the first of which was published in London in 1678 and the second in 1684. He conceived the work during his first period of imprisonment, and probably finished it during the second. The earliest edition in which the two p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aesop & Robert L'Estrange
London: J. Hindmarsh,. Very Good. 1692. First Edition thus. Folio. Engraved frontispiece portrait of L'Estrange by Roger White after Geoffrey Kneller and full page engraving of Aesop and animals. Nineteenth century half calf over marbled boards, rebacked, spine bands, title gilt, new endpapers, soiling and pen annotations to title page, some foxing, some leaves toned, minor smudges and stains, occasional pen annotations in the margins, one small hole and track in the lower margins (pages 129 to the end) from biopredation, not affecting text; edge of portrait repaired (no loss), overall a very good copy. Roger L'Estrange (1616-1704), Tory journalist and pamphleteer, was notorious in his day for his many works against the dissenters and Whigs. He received license of the press in 1692 to seize all seditious books and libels, apprehend the authors, and bring those responsible to "justice"; he used such license liberally, and in effect, reigned in terror over his adversaries until the time of William and Mary. At the same time, he was a rather impecunious man, and so issued a number of translations and editions of classic works. He added later a second volume to this popular work which is not present here. "The Aesop, on the other hand, was actually an assemblage of fables and facetiae from a variety of sources, ancient and modern, the second volume being wholly un-Aesopian. The trenchant reflections added to the individual fables possess a strong political animus and were to draw severe criticism from the later Whig fabulist Samuel Croxall; but all L'Est … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erich Roll, History of Economic Thought, pp.114-118First edition of John Locke's first book on economics - Locke's most important contribution to mercantile and monetary theory. It was an attempt to influence Parliament to defeat a bill to lower the legal rate of interest from 6% to 4% - it was fixed by law at 5% on January 23rd 1692. "Locke followed William Petty closely in deriving his theory of interest from an analysis of rent. He still regarded rent as the only surplus, and inquired how money, which was by nature barren, could have the same productive character as the soil, which did produce something useful. His conclusion was that just as the unequal distribution of land enabled those who had more than they could cultivate themselves to take a tenant from whom they obtained rent, so the unequal distribution of money enabled its owners to obtain a tenant for it from whom they could receive interest" Erich Roll p.115"It was, however, Locke's emphasis on the medium of exchange … [Click Below for Full Description]

MACHIAVELLI, Niccolo
1692. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception." ― Niccolò Machiavelli Niccolo Machiavelli is one of the most important figures in 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance philosophy. His works helped define what has become political science. His most famous work "The Prince" has infamously coined the term 'Machiavellianism' regarding politics and dishonest politicians. This work, "The Discourses on Livy" is a treatise on the classical history of early Ancient Rome. While there are elements of historical fact, Machiavelli wrote this book to illustrate how a republic government should be started and managed, rather than how it was managed by the Romans. This book includes one of the earliest examples of the concepts of 'checks and balances'. [Attributes: First Edition]

Coronelli Vincenzo Maria
Incisione su rame all'acquaforte e bulino. Foglio unico di due incollati insieme di mm 605 x 453. Carta di filo senza tinte, porosa e spessa. Filigrana non rilevata. Titolo in alto a desta entro ricco cartiglio . Toponimi e descrizioni geografiche nella pianta. Proveniente da: "Corso Geografico Universale", Venezia 1692. Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (August 16, 1650 - December 9, 1718) was a Franciscan monk, an Italian cosmographer, publisher and encyclopedist known in particular for his globes. Born in Venice, Coronelli became a Minorite Friar and doctor of Theology at the Collegium San Bonaventura in Rome. In 1678 Coronelli created two globes for the Duke of Parma. These globes had a diameter of c. 175cm and were finely crafted. This drew the attention of the French ambassador, César d'Estrées, who subsequently invited Coronelli to Paris. Coronelli moved to the French capital in 1681, where he lived for two years.
