BOYLE, Robert
London: Edw. Jones, 1692. hardcover. near fine. 174 pages, slim 12mo, handsomely rebound in full brown polished calf, blind stamped pattern on both covers and red leather spine labels. In the Savoy: Printed by Edw. Jones, for Henry Herringman, London, 1692. Seventh Edition. Near fine. The text was written by Boyle when he was but 22 years old and is in the form of a letter addressed to Lindamor, 'a learned youth, well-born and well-bred.' - Antique print, titled: 'Vaertuig van omtrent de Eylanden Moa en Jnsou, wesende voor Eylanden van Nova Gunea' - ('Vessel from the islands Moa and Insou, being islands near New Guinea'). Two warriors with bow and arrow and spears, and a third piloting a catamaran canoe. Etching / engraving on hand laid paper. Description: From: 'Noord en Oost Tartarije ', by Nicolaas Witsen, first published 1692. A very important historic book about Russia. Witsen produced the 1692 / first edition as a private enterprise, which was not for sale. The 1705 edition was the first commercially made, but probably still available only to acquaintances of Witsen and also of the utmost rarity. As a very wealthy member of the Dutch political elite, Witsen could collect an enormous mass of maps, travelogues, manuscripts and objects, and put it to use for this huge effort. Witsen also produced a separate map on six leaves, as a companion to the first edition, and made a second state of this map before 1700. The book was maded during a period of intensive Russian-Dutch collaboration, and Witsen assisted Peter I in many ways during and after the Tsar's stay in Holland. It still serves as a unique source for the history, languages, geography and ethnography of the Northern parts of the country and further describes parts of Asia, as far as New-Guinea. Ref: Tiele, 1224; Landwehr, VOC, 259. Very rare. Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Nicolaas Witsen'. Nicolaas or Nicolaes Witsen (1641-1717) was a Dutch statesman who was mayor of Amsterdam thirteen times, between 1682-1706. In 1693 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Occasional mild foxing throughout, more especially to prelims. Inscription at top corner of front paste down page reads "Thomas Wentworth his book 1707"Owner book plate and further notes in pencil also on paste down. Charles de Sercy, 1692. in-12, pp. (20), 505, (46), leg. in p. vitello, titolo e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso a nervetti (cerniera ant. Fessurata).

Born in Venice, Coronelli became a Minorite Friar and doctor of Theology at the Collegium San Bonaventura in Rome. In 1678 Coronelli created two globes for the Duke of Parma. These globes had a diameter of c. 175cm and were finely crafted. This drew the attention of the French ambassador, César d'Estrées, who subsequently invited Coronelli to Paris. Coronelli moved to the French capital in 1681, where he lived for two years. Coronelli was commissioned by the cardinal d'Estrées to produce two globes, one of the earth, the other of the heavens, for king Louis XIV. These globes measuring 384cm in diameter are presently relocated to their new place, Bibliothèque nationale François Mitterrand in Paris. Due to his renown he worked in various European countries in the following years, permanently returning to Venice in 1705. The first part presents 59 propositions on geometrical optics, providing a thorough treatment of the nature of sight and the properties of lenses, telescopes, microscopes, and magic lanterns. The second part consists of a series of chapters on topics including refraction and light, glasses for defective eyes, and telescopic instruments. A second edition was published in 1709. The manuscript was seen through the press by Edmond Halley, who allowed Molyneux to include as an appendix his theorem for finding the focus of a spherical lens. DANIEL, Gabriel.
London Thomas Bennet 1692 - FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 1692, the original French edition Voyage du Monde de Descartes first published in 1690). 8vo, approximately 185 x 115 mm, 7½ x 4½ inches, 17 woodcut images and diagrams in the text, pages: [16], 1-298, [6], with advert and errata on last prelim leaf, bound in full contemporary panelled calf, rebacked at sometime, gilt date at foot of spine, no title label, new endpapers. Binding rubbed, lower hinge begining to crack, covers still firmly attached, covers have shallow pitting, corners worn, top of title page neatly repaired and a small repair to top inner margin, D. Defoe's name written neatly on title page, pale browning throughout (see attached images), A very good copy. Gabriel Daniel (1649 - 1728) born in Rouen, was a French Jesuit scholar, author of books on history, philosophy and religion. In this book, called a romance by the translator and sometimes classed as science fiction, he visits the moon and explores the cosmos of rotating vortices hypothesized by Descartes circa 1640, a cosmos recently confirmed by studies of the origins of the solar system, of spiral galaxies, and of accretion disks around black holes. Pere Daniel's efforts are directed to satirising the Cartesian system and theories. ESTC R29697. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST. VAN LIMBORCH (Philippus);

Contemp. blindstamped pigskin; ms. spine label (c. 1718). First edition, first printing of Mezger's monumental chronicle of Salzburg, covering the years 582-1687. This copy, from the library of the Munich court librarian Johann Caspar Kandler, is the only known complete copy, containing more plates than the copy in the Austrian National Library. Of the five copies auctioned during the last two decades, one contained a mere 5 engravings, the others none at all. As compared with the list of plates as provided by Nebehay/Wagner, our copy wants two triumphal arches (and another engraving present only in copies issued after 1699), but instead has two other plates not listed there: a different arch and the martyrdom of St Maximus. Entirely complete, with a distinct waterstain throughout; loss of corner to half-title (not touching text); corner to f. Zzz2 remargined.
