BOSSUET, Jacques Bénigne
Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1691. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The greatest weakness of all weaknesses is to fear too much to appear weak." ― Jacques Bossuet Jacques Bossuet was a French bishop known for his anti-protestant sermons and speeches. He was highly favored by Louis XIV for his views that the king was divinely appointed by God. Many scholars agree that Bossuet's most famous and important work was his 'Variations of the Protestant Church;' a work that focused on the lack of structure and organization within the Protestant Church. This work began a literary battle between Catholics and Protestants in which Protestants began identifying flaws and problems in the Catholic Church. This fight drew the attention other important figures such as Liebniz.

Palafox y Mendoza, Juan de
Lucas Martin, Sevilla, 1691. Octavo, 21 x 15cm, ff [32 incl. portrait leaf], pp 1 - 465, ff 17 (index). SIGNED BY VICEROY BUCARELI. First edition was 1682, but this is a lovely printing, with text in ornamental borders, many tailpieces (culs de lampe), and a fine engraved portrait of the author by Orozco, showing Palafox (1600 - 59) in his library. This is the spiritual autobiography of Palafox, who served as Bishop of Puebla, Mexico, as well as briefly Viceroy of New Spain. A bitter dispute with the Jesuits forced him to be recalled to Spain. This document was left by him at the Convent of Discalced Carmelites in Madrid, where he spent his last years. He was noted for his benign treatment of the indigenous people of Mexico, as well as donating his own library of some 5000 volumes toward the founding of the first public library in the New World, the Biblioteca Palafoxiana in Puebla, which continues to this day. He patronized the arts in Mexico as well, making Puebla the center of sacred music. His cause for sainthood has languished for over two centuries, supposedly because of Jesuit opposition, but he was finally beatified under Benedict XVI in 2011. This copy was the personal copy of the great Viceroy ANTONIO BUCARELI Y URZUA as is evidenced by his bold signature on the front free endpaper. [Palau 209802] Bound in the original vellum, title on spine (faded), paper fresh and free of foxing; previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown; last two pages of index show some insect damage at bottom of page with small loss of text. Very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Villars, Abbé de (Nicolas-Pierre-Henri de Montfaucon)]
Pierre Marteau, Cologne. [ca. 1691 and ca. 1703.] 16mo. Two volumes in one. 155;[2],150pp. In French. 18th or early 19th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt spine rules, gilt leather label. First title page printed in red and black with armillary sphere device. Early inscriptions in flyleaf. Closely trimmed at fore-edge, touching some characters of text (with no loss). Joints expertly repaired, binding rubbed and moderately worn. Very good. Early edition of the best known work of Henri de Montfaucon, Abbé de Villars (1635-1673), for which he is said to have been murdered by the Rosicrucians. This edition adds the "Réponse à la lettre de Monseigneur" to the 1670 original text and is bound with a "posthumous" sequel published ca. 1703 by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam. The primary work, a satirical dialogue between a Cabalist and a skeptic, addresses the Paracelsan idea of the marriage of elemental spirits to human beings. It ostensibly unveiled Rosicrucian secrets, which may be what led to Villars’s assasination on the road to Lyon in 1673. Despite its satirical nature, the book has been treated as a source for esoteric knowledge over the generations to the present day. F. Leigh Gardner describes it in that spirit in his BIBLIOTHECA ROSICRUCIANA: "The chief figure in it is said to be taken from G. F. Borri, who is the imaginary Count de Gabalis; although written in a satirical vein yet it contains profound truths; possibly the author found it necessary in those days to disseminate knowledge in this fashion. It is also stated that Pope in his work, ‘The Rape of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition. An impassioned, if sometimes diffuse, appeal for investment in England's maritime future, and the not entirely unrelated business interests of Messrs. Hale. A discursive essay which draws support for Hale's innovations from a wide variety of sources, technical and moral, from Phineas Pett to Galileo. Sir William Petty, whose Political Arithmetic had given him particular prominence at this time, is invoked by name in the title, but his treatise is very brief (pp. 117-32) and can only be a synopsis. He had delivered a paper on building ships to the Royal Society in 1661. The manuscript of this, which is not known to have survived, was kept by Lord Brunker as too important to be published, and was, according to Keynes, almost certainly the source of the Treatise as printed here. PRONK, Cornelis.
1691. Original washed pen and ink drawing showing a view across the Leidschevaart waterway toward the western city gate of Utrecht, the Catharijnepoort, by Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759). This gate was designed by Paulus Moreelse in 1621, and was the most important western city gate, where the road from The Hague entered the city. It was demolished in the 19th century. The viewpoint of this drawing is situated on the tow path along the Leidschevaart near the second Moesgracht. Visible in the background are from left to right: the St. Jobsgasthuis on the Vleutenseweg, the mill "De Meiboom" on the Paardenveld and the tower of the Jacobikerk.Pronk’s drawings were often copied and many prints were engraved after his work, especially by Hendrik Spilman and Caspar Philips. These engraved views were published by Isaak Tirion in Amsterdam, for example in Spilman’s 'T verheerlykt Nederland (Amsterdam, 1745) and the Utrecht volume (XI) of Tegenwoordige staat der Nederlanden. An anonymous copy of the present Pronk drawing was published in C.C.S. Wilmer's book on drawings of Utrecht.Very fine drawing in good condition.l Cf. C.C.S. REYNING, Jan Erasmus (as told to David van der STERRE).
Zeer aanmerkelijke reysen gedaan door Jan Erasmus Reining, meest in de West-Indien en ook in veel andere deelen des werelds. &c. Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1691. 4to. With an engraved frontispiece signed by Caspar Luyken and 6 engraved plates (including 2 folding) one by Jan Luyken (unsigned). 18th-century marbled wrappers. In a modern black cloth clamshell box. [6], "134" [= 136], [6] pp. Rare first and only edition of the heroic exploits of the famous Dutch pirate, privateer and naval officer Jan Erasmus Reyning (1640-1697). His close friend, a Curaçao doctor, wrote down his stories and published them. Reyning's adventurous career began at age ten when he went to sea with his father, who was killed in battle when they served on a privateering ship a couple years later. Jan Erasmus was taken prisoner during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667), and went into the service of a French plantation on the island of Hispaniola. Around 1667 he became a buccaneer in the jungles around Santo Domingo, and between 1669 and 1672 he appears to have fought as a privateer captain with French or English letters of marque. He and his partner Jelle Lecat worked with such notorious pirates as Roche Braziliano and Henry Morgan. In 1672, with the Netherlands at war with England and France, he left Spanish service to protect the Dutch colony of Curaçao, earning him a reputation as a sort of Robin Hood and the gratitude of the Dutch West India Company. After returning to the Netherlands he served as an officer in the Dutch marine, dying in a storm in the Bay of Biscay in 1697.An object apparentl … [Click Below for Full Description]

A lovely volume.Printer David B. Abraham de Castro de Tartas (1625-1700) helped produce the earliest known Jewish newspaper in Spanish, intended for the Marrano diaspora. David Tartas was the brother of Isaac de Castro de Tartas, martyred during the Inquisition. News of Isaac's death ""occasioned deep mourning"" in Amsterdam, the place of this Bible's publication and the location of a large concentration of Spanish Jews (Encyclopedia Judaica V: 247, II: 613). Delicately engraved frontispieces for both the Pentateuch and Haftarah, which are contained in this volume, contribute to a wonderful unity of form in design and typography. The engraved floral pattern of the title page of the Pentateuch is repeated in the silver hinges, clasps and corners of the binding. Similarly, the gilt and gauffered edges are picked up and repeated on the title page of the Haftarah. Some mispagination, text complete. 1691. 8 sheets written on recto and verso. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 3/4") unbound leaves. 1 page written in Náhuatl. The Cabildo, Justice and Aldermen of the Village of Tehuacán testify that Don Gabriel Santiago, cacique of Tehuacán has in his possession documents that belong to the City, starting with the Royal Decree that ordered the founding of Tehuacán over the village of Calcahualco in times of Viceroy Peralta (1566 – 1567), as well as deeds for grants of land and water made by the Viceroys to the City of Tehuacán. He has this papers that he inherited from his father Agustin de Santiago, deceased. He also has other documents: deeds, formalities, sales, and possessions. They ask all these papers be returned to the City, to be stored by the Royal Notary, in a box with 5 keys. They deem these papers necessary to the city, to be able to solve land disputes and land invasions and to be able to give deeds to the landowners. The case is presented to a judge who orders all papers belonging to the City be turned over to the Notary, in possession of Don Gabriel Santiago or any other cacique. He complies, but requests papers of a water dispute in the village of Santa Maria be included in this box. Don Gabriel Santiago testifies he needs those papers, in order to collect tributes from the Indians, and to solve problems that arise in the community. On the back of his testimony there is one page in Nahuatl, signed by the members of the Cabildo. Condition: Edge wear with tears and chips, heal corner damaged [Attributes: First Edition]

London: , 1691. FIRST EDITION of the authentic works. . Octavo:. A truly fine copy in its original speckled calf binding, corners bumped, hinges starting. It may indicate that this edition was produced with the approval of the Earl’s family and friends, and it is possible that they may have intervened to prevent the publication of Saunders’s projected edition [license obtained from the Stationer’s Company by Saunders in November of 1690, no edition was ever produced]. Tonson’s edition is introduced by a laudatory preface written b … [Click Below for Full Description]
