Jacob Böhme (1575-1624), German visionary and founder of the Behmenist sects, was a master shoemaker and amateur chemist who claimed to have received visions from the Holy Spirit on at least three striking occasions. At first and at the insistence of the clergy, he refrained from recording his revelations, but eventually he succumbed to his experiences and poured out a wealth of books, many of them in the last five years of his life. His works were immensely popular in England, and it has been noted that much of Quaker doctrine borrows from Böhme's works and ide … [Click Below for Full Description]

ESTC records seven copies in the U.K. and seven in North America. Only edition of an informative account of trade in the East Indies and the East India Company by an ?insider? merchant, George White, who calls for a refounding of the company by a national subscription and an Act of Parliament. White writes ?at the desire of several Members of Both Houses of Parliament? and responds to three of their questions: ?Whether the trade to the East-Indies was really such a great advantage to the nation, as general discourse represented it??, what is the ?constitution, management, and condition of the present company? . and ?my opinion of the most proper manner and method for settling that trade to the honour and interest of the kingdom? (1). White argues that the East-Indian trade is a linchpin in the wheel of English commerce: ?This trade do'[e]s not only supply us with varieties of goods for our necessary use and ornament; but the greater part of the commodities brought from India are exported to sundry parts in Europe, Africa, and America, which does further advance our navigation and commerce? Jean Baptiste NOLIN (1657 ca. - 1708)
Nolin estabilished his printing buisiness in Paris, Rue St. Jacques, where he engraved and sold many maps; on many of them, he erroneously wrote "King's engraver"and "Duque d'Orleans geographer". His competitor Guillaume De L'Isle accused him and had him condamend for plagiarism. His business, however, grew bigger and bigger. This work is taken from the famous Theatre de la guerré en Italie.., printed for the first time in 1691. The map is decorated with a marvellous cartouche and the plan of Turin, Vercelli and Verrua. Barclay, Robert
London: Printed for Thomas Northcott, 1691. Second Edition. Second edition. [181]-236 pp. Complete text but does not include Appendix: "Robert Barclay, His Vindication[...]" other copies were apparently bound with. Disbound with paper tape on spine. Very Good with slightly worn corners, small stains on last page and a small marginal checkmark there as well. Uncommon. A Quaker tract by prominent a Scottish Quaker and governor of East Jersey (later New Jersey), first published in 1674. Barclay portrays the more radical Puritans ("Ranters and Other Libertines") with their disorganization and "Romanists" (i.e. Catholics) with their extensive hierarchy as the two undesirable polar opposites the Quakers are sagely perched between. The Ranters (insofar as they were a coherent tendency and not a straw man created by conservatives) are of interest to historians of radical social movements for they were the undisputed vanguard of the English Revolution, advocating all sorts of heresies from public nudity to proto-communism to a sort of pre-Nietzschian amoralism. This text would be reprinted many times in the century following its initial publication, serving as a warning against the type of revolutionary excesses of the 17th century. Very Good.

"The Amsterdam edition attested to the success beyond French borders of this handy 'manual' (in-12) intended for practitioners. Acquaforte e bulino, 1691. Monro, Alexander
Printed for J. Hindmarsh, 1691. First Edition. Hardcover. Small quarto: [2], 106 pp. Bound in modern half calf antique over marbled boards, old wrappers bound in at end (upper wrapper with early booksellers description and evidence of previous library shelf-marks). Some dust soiling. Very good. ¶ DAVID LAING'S COPY. Laing was one of the foremost Scottish antiquarians and bibliographers; he was a learned bookseller and, from 1837 to his death in 1878, keeper of the library of the Writers to the Signet, Edinburgh. He edited a large number of works of Scottish poetry and prose collectors, and formed a spectacular collection of Scottish historical materials which were dispersed posthumously through four huge sales at Sotheby's (1879-1881). The present pamphlet was lot 2988, and features Laing's autograph in pencil inside the front wrapper. ¶ This pamphlet contains the testimony and response of Alexander Monro in answer to charges of "misconduct of office" and also of "Popery." In December 1685 he was appointed principal of Edinburgh University and minister of the high church, succeeding Andrew Cant in both offices. "Monro, though professedly Presbyterian, had strong leanings towards episcopacy, and was strongly attached to the cause of James II. Consequently, when the Presbyterians came into power at the revolution, he resigned his ministerial charge, and was forced to demit his office of principal. In 1688 he was nominated bishop of Argyle by the influence of Viscount Dundee, but he was neither elected nor consecrated. The commission appointed to see the Privy Council Act of 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Inscribed "Ex dono illustriss[imi] Epi[scopi] Authoris" on the title. This copy with variant title ornament and collation. Tchemerzine II, page 393. Jacob Benigni Bossuet (1627 - 1704) was a French bishop and theologian, renowned for his sermons and other addresses. He has been considered by many to be one of the most brilliant orators of all time and a masterly French stylist. In 1642, Bossuet enrolled in the Collège de Navarre in Paris to finish his classical studies and to begin the study of philosophy and theology. His mentor at Navarre was the college's president, Nicolas Cornet, the theologian whose denunciation of Antoine Arnauld at the Sorbonne in 1649 was a major episode in the Jansenist controversy. When Bossuet was chosen to be the tutor of the Dauphin, oldest child of Louis XIV, he wrote several works for the edification of his pupil, one of which was Politics Derived from the Words of Holy Scripture, a discourse on the principles of royal absolutism. The work was published posthumously in 1709. Signature required on delivery. [Attributes: First Edition]

John Dryden
Tonson, London. 1st edition of John Dryden's King Arthur: or, The British Worthy, printed in 1691 for Jacob Tonson. An early, hard to find, Arthurian tale. "The plot is based on the battles between King Arthur's Britons and the Saxons, rather than the legends of Camelot (although Merlin does make an appearance). It is a Restoration spectacular, including such supernatural characters as Cupid and Venus plus references to the Germanic gods of the Saxons, Woden, Thor, and Freya. The tale centers on Arthur's endeavors to recover his fiancée, the blind Cornish Princess Emmeline, who has been abducted by his arch-enemy, the Saxon King Oswald of Kent." "King Arthur is a 'dramatick opera' or semi-opera: the principal characters do not sing, except if they are supernatural, pastoral or, in the case of Comus and the popular 'Your hay it is mow'd, drunk'. Secondary characters sing to them, usually as diegetic entertainment, but in Act 4 and parts of Act 2, as supernatural beckonings. The singing in Act 1 is religious observance by the Saxons, ending with their heroic afterlife in Valhalla. The protagonists are actors, as a great deal of King Arthur consists of spoken text. This was normal practice in 17th century English opera." - Wiki About this Edition - When first printed, this work did not have a prologue and epilogue, they were added later. This is a rare example, noted by Fredson Bowers, Times Literary Supplement, 10 April 1953, p. 244, where the last leaf and the epilogue have been placed on the same leaf (perhaps a replacement leaf). This is also noted in the OCLC notes for 76 … [Click Below for Full Description]

SOME CONSIDERATIONS]
London: s.n, 1691. 4to., caption title, 36pp., first and last leaves lightly soiled, recently well bound in cloth, spine gilt lettered. A fine, crisp, copy with generous margins. First edition. A good essay on government finances and in particular why raising money to pay for the war through the excise would have to be done with the greatest care. The best solution, according to this writer, was to sell the Irish land 'belonging to the Irish Papists'. 'If they were exposed to sale, would find purchasers enough, at such kind of rates as they were formerly sold for up the like occasion; and the money which should arise from them would serve for a fund to defray a great part of the next years expence of the war'. [p.32]. Nonetheless, the writer continues, 'It has been laid down in Parliament as a good rule, to support the government in time of peace, by taxes upon trade; and in time of war, to have recourse to the land, because that tax will not be in danger of being continued when the war is over'. De Lepine Lodovico

An extensive monograph critiquing the administration of the Royal Navy, with proposals for the improvement of the service, by Henry Maydman, purser and mayor of Portsmouth for 1710. The work provides a succinct portrait of the economic and organisational makeup of the navy, before presenting detailed arguments for revisions and the introduction of new procedure.
