1692. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception." ― Niccolò Machiavelli Niccolo Machiavelli is one of the most important figures in 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance philosophy. His works helped define what has become political science. His most famous work "The Prince" has infamously coined the term 'Machiavellianism' regarding politics and dishonest politicians. This work, "The Discourses on Livy" is a treatise on the classical history of early Ancient Rome. While there are elements of historical fact, Machiavelli wrote this book to illustrate how a republic government should be started and managed, rather than how it was managed by the Romans. This book includes one of the earliest examples of the concepts of 'checks and balances'. [Attributes: First Edition]

Coronelli Vincenzo Maria
Incisione su rame all'acquaforte e bulino. Foglio unico di due incollati insieme di mm 605 x 453. Carta di filo senza tinte, porosa e spessa. Filigrana non rilevata. Titolo in alto a desta entro ricco cartiglio . Toponimi e descrizioni geografiche nella pianta. Proveniente da: "Corso Geografico Universale", Venezia 1692. Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (August 16, 1650 - December 9, 1718) was a Franciscan monk, an Italian cosmographer, publisher and encyclopedist known in particular for his globes. Born in Venice, Coronelli became a Minorite Friar and doctor of Theology at the Collegium San Bonaventura in Rome. In 1678 Coronelli created two globes for the Duke of Parma. These globes had a diameter of c. 175cm and were finely crafted. This drew the attention of the French ambassador, César d'Estrées, who subsequently invited Coronelli to Paris. Coronelli moved to the French capital in 1681, where he lived for two years. Coronelli was commissioned by the cardinal d'Estrées to produce two globes, one of the earth, the other of the heavens, for king Louis XIV. These globes measuring 384cm in diameter are presently relocated to their new place, Bibliothèque nationale François Mitterrand in Paris. Due to his renown he worked in various European countries in the following years, permanently returning to Venice in 1705. In Venice he started his own cosmographical project and published the volumes of Atlante Veneto. In his home city he founded the very first geographical society, the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He also held the position of Cosmographer of the Republic of Venice … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very RARE ENGLISH edition in LARGE FOLIO "I myself have read the writings and teachings of the heretics, polluting my soul for a while with their abominable notions, though deriving this benefit: I was able to refute them for myself and loathe them even more." ― Eusebius, The Church History Eusebius's 'Church History' is considered the pioneering work on the history of the Church. He details the life of Jesus through Emperor Constantine's military victories (ca. 325 AD). A very rare 17th-century English edition of Eusebius's History of the Church. Originally written in Greek, the English edition here was printed by the famous John Hayes in Cambridge. Hayes is known for his controversial printings of English Bibles. Adolf Hitler Nazism Regime Anti-Semitic Propaganda Abraham a Sancta Clara was a 17th-century German clergyman known for his eccentric Augustinian views. His sermons were popular, not only because of content, but because he was known to be entertaining and satirical in his delivery. His main book, "Judas Der Ertz-Schelm" is a German personal devotional which discusses moral doctrines, as well as Bible history and ecclesiastical poetry, focusing on Judas Iscariot and his betrayal of Jesus Christ. This title was extensively used by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime as a supplement to their foundational philosophies. [Attributes: First Edition]

Paris, Jacques Herissant, 1692. Tiny 8vo. (binding measuring 9x6 cm.).Bound in an abolutely lovely, contemporary embrodered light blue silk binding over wooden boards, embrodered in silver- and gold-thread in high relief, with sequins. Boards with wide embroidered border and with a large embroidered floral centre-piece. Spine with three large embroidered flower-like decorations. Inside of boards with patterned, coloured silk. All edges gilt. A bit of wear, but almost all of the embroidery intact and in good condition with only minor wear. Also internally in very fine condition. (16), 306, (2) pp. With two engraved frontispiece-portraits (of Louis Dauphin de France and Marie Anne Chretienne Victoire de Baviere, Dauphine de France). Housed in a wonderful patterned blue paper box with rich blindstamping, gilt edges, and inner gilt dentelles. ¶ Magnificent copy of this little book of hours dedicated to "Louis, Dauphin of France", being Louis of France (1661-1711), the eldest son and heir of Louis XIV, King of France, and Maria Theresa of Spain. We have been able to locate one single book with about the same title, printed in 1681 (with 194 pages) (also in a silk binding and with Dutch silver filigree casing), but otherwise no other copies with this title whatsoever. And none printed in 1692. The work seems to be of the utmost scarcity and to have been made for the special purpose of a gift. The 1681-copy that we located is at the Morgan Library and Museum.

BULSTRODE, Whitelock
THE DEDICATION COPY. First Latin translation of his Whitelock Bulstrode's first published work, An Essay of Transmigration, in defence of Pythagoras, or, a Discourse of Natural Philosophy, 1692. 'This wide-ranging work of natural philosophy drew particularly on alchemical sources. Bulstrode (16521724) was an admirer of Eirenaeus Philalethes, the pseudonym of the American alchemist George Starkey, whom he referred to several times as 'the great Eirenaeus'. Bulstrode argued that transmigration -- the theory of the passage of the soul at death into another body -- applied properly to vegetative and sensitive rather than rational souls, and that ancient mythology was an elaborately coded system of natural and experimental philosophy' (ODNB). This Latin translation was done by Oswald Dyke. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, [ii], lxi, [i], 160, [2] pp., engraved portrait, outer leaves a little foxed and browned, contemporary red morocco, sides panelled in gilt, spine gilt in six compartments, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, a fine and attractive copy, from the library of the dedicatee, Thomas Parker, first Earl of Macclesfield. Ca 1750 pp. A few margins with brownspots, otherwise internally clean and fine. ¶ About 1684 Dupin conceived the idea of his Nouvelle bibliothèque des auteurs ecclésiastiques (the French edition of the work offered) , the first volume of which appeared in 1686. In it he treated simultaneously biography, literary criticism, and the history of dogma; in this he was a pioneer leaving far behind him all previous efforts, Catholic or Protestant, which were still under the influence of the Scholastic method. He was also the first to publish such a collection in a modern language. - Graesse II, 448.

BOYLE, Robert; [LOCKE, John].
Awnsham and John Churchill, London, 1692. First edition of this rare posthumously published work on the nature of gases, seen through the press by Boyle?s friend John Locke and containing some of Locke?s own early meteorological observations. The product of Boyle?s life?s work on gases, the General History ?is of special interest in that it sums up his ultimate conclusions? (Fulton, Boyle, p. 133). The work is of considerable importance in the history of science ? not only did the views Boyle expressed here become the basis for the phlogiston theory of combustion, it also contained the first clear statement of the kinetic theory of gases, almost half a century before Daniel Bernoulli?s Hydrodynamica. Only two other copies of Boyle?s work have appeared at auction in the past 25 years. ?The book begins with an excellent definition which deserves to be quoted (p. 1): ?By the Air I commonly understand that thin, fluid, diaphanous, compressible and dilatable Body in which we breath, and wherein we move, which envelops the Earth on all sides to a great height above the highest Mountains; but yet is so different from the Aether [or Vacuum] in the intermundane or interplanetary Spaces, that it refracts the Rays of the Moon and other remoter Luminaries.? He then discusses the ingredients of the air, prefacing his remarks by the following prescient sentence (p. 3): 'I much suspect there lies yet something concealed in it, that needs a further Discovery, which may perhaps be made by further Trials,? It seems then not improbable to me', he goes on to say, ?that our Atmospherical Air ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

Awnsham & Johan. Churchill, 1692. FIRST EDITION Separate title for the Ontologia. Contemporary calf, boards ruled in blind, rebacked with the original backstrip laid down; an excellent copy. First edition of Le Clerc's revision of the Port Royal Logique from a Protestant, Remonstrant perspective. The Remonstrants are Dutch Protestants who, in 1610, presented to the States of Holland and Friesland a remonstrance in five articles formulating their points of disagreement with Calvinism. Like the Logique, this work deals with concept (idea), judgment, reasoning and method. Much of the work is anti-Cartesian and supports Locke's theories of rationality. The present work was written as a textbook for his own students in Amsterdam, and was used at Cambridge as a standard text for many years, going through five editions by 1716. Le Clerc was a confirmed rationalist. He believed that the fundamentals of Christianity are capable of demonstration. "Scripture must be rationally interpreted; one cannot believe what conflicts with rational truths, and doctrines over which rational men disagree are not essentials of faith." He opposed Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, and Leibniz because their theories claim knowledge beyond human ideas. Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736), a Swiss Protestant by birth, was one of the outstanding figures in Anglo-Dutch intellectual history. He had a major influence on eighteenth-century French philosophy. He championed rational religion, which was later widely accepted, and was also the first disciple of John Locke, whose work he introduced to Continental audiences. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Villavicencio, Diego Jaimes Ricardo.
Imprenta de Diego Fernandez de Leon, 1692. Personal experience among various indigenous people of differing regions of Mexico sets this treatise apart from the garden variety of other books by Villavicencio's contemporaries on surviving pre-Contact religious practices. One normally searches hard to find information on religious practices among the late 17th-century Chocho speakers of Oaxaca and Veracruz, for example, but some interesting tidbits can be found here -- though the greatest portion of the volume is dedicated to practices among the various Nahuatl-speaking peoples, as they were viewed by Europeans as the norm for pre-Conquest practices. In fact, there is a confessionary in Nahuatl that speaks specifically to indigenous practices on pp. 11-19 of the second pagination. In addition to supplying firsthand practical information about native post-Contact survivals (e.g., the lengthy list found on pp. 49 and 50, second pagination, of sacrifice practices and superstitions that the Church frowned upon), the author displays considerable erudition on the subject of pre-Contact practices based on a huge body of published information, all of which is carefully documented. 17th-century Mexican imprints are ever increasingly difficult to find, and those produced in Puebla (as opposed to Mexico City) are the most difficult of all. This important treatise is => only the second complete copy we have had in our stock in more than 30 years of dealing in Mexicana. Curiously, there are two issues of this sole edition. After the work was printed but before all copies were sold o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blancard, Stephan (d.i. Blankaart, Steven).
Besitzeintrag. – VD17 23:243202P. Vgl. Weller 1108 (holländ. EA). Nicht bei Garrison/Morton. [Attributes: First Edition]
