Coret (Révérend Pere Jacques).
A Liège, de l'Imprimerie Pierre Danthez, 1692. Frontispice, (11), 587 pp., (2). Bona, Giovanni.
Apud Robertum Pepie, 1692. Relying on insights from the Church Fathers and some ancient philosophers, this popular spiritual work has been compared to the Imitation of Christ because of the simplicity of its style. First published in 1658, it saw 14 Latin editions in its first four decades; it was also translated into Armenian, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The author, Giovanni Cardinal Bona (1609-74), was a Cistercian monk and abbot noted as much for his scholarship as for preserving the great simplicity of his lifestyle even after he had attained high rank in the Church.

DRYDEN, JOHN AND THOMAS SOUTHERNE.
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1692. 4to, 19th-century marbled boards backed in mottled calf, black morocco label, gilt lettering. Dryden's final tragedy and penultimate play, an eloquent account of the fall of Cleomenes, based on a story from Plutarch. Dryden fell ill while writing the play, and the fifth act was mostly composed by his protégé Thomas Southerne (1659-1746). The play was deemed politically unsuitable and initially banned, but the Earl of Rochester interceded on Dryden's behalf, which gained him a grateful dedication. Annotations in the text by an early and knowledgeable reader. Binding a little worn; some staining and foxing in the text; but a very good copy, with decent margins.

EHRMANN, Max. (Leo Wyatt)
1692. [No place: no publisher, no date]. Fine. Framed broadside. 7" x 10", framed to 12" x 15". A few small chips to the frame, else fine. Wood engraving with white lettering on a green background, typeset by Leo Wyatt in an edition limited to 75 numbered prints, and Signed by him in pencil. The text is set from the opening lines of Desiderata, a prose poem written by Max Ehrmann, here stated to be "Found in Old Saint Paul's Church-Baltimore, Dated 1692." The confusion about the origin of this piece probably originated because a rector in Old St. Paul's used the quote, obtained from a 1948 edition of Ehrmann's collected poems, in a sermon, and it was erronously attributed to the church, founded in 1692. Noted by Wyatt in two lines written beneath the limitation number, as "In all good faith wrongly ascribed... Written by Max Ehrmann. First published in 1948."

(Dryden, John) Saint-Evremont, Charles de Saint-Denis, Sieur de
London: John Everingham, 1692. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. [16], 376pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Dryden contributed the last half of the "Character." A second volume of Essay appeared two years later. Saint-Evremont (1613-1703) was exiled in 1663 for criticizing Mazarin's treaty with Spain (1659) and spent the rest of his life in the English courts of Charles II, James II, and William III. "A man of sceptical and epicurean temperament, one of the most distinguished of the 'libertins', he wrote with light, sober, witty elegance short disquisitions on many subjects, literary and other, and his literary criticism had considerable influence in England, where he was on intimate terms with courtiers such as Buckingham and writers such as Hobbes, Waller, and Cowley ... John DRYDEN
Printed for Jacon Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-Lane near Fleet Street, 1692. Printed for Jacon Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-Lane near Fleet Street,, 1692. Sm. 4to., First Edition, some mild age-staining and spotting throughout; modern grey boards, paper label lettered in black on upper board, one or two upper margins closely shaved else a crisp, firm copy. Dryden's second-to-last play, and according to MacDonald partially completed by Southerne. Its first performance should have been early in April 1692, but on the 9th it was prohibited; it was acted out on or before 16 April at the Theatre Royal. In his Dedication Dryden attributes the lifting of the ban to Rochester (the dedicatee), who had represented the drama to the Queen as 'wholly innocent of those Crimes which were laid unjustly to its Charge'. The Life of Cleomenes is supplied by Creech (from Plutarch; see MacDonald 131). In this copy, as often, the Prologue and Epilogue appear before the 'Life'. CBEL II, p.267; MacDonald, 92.

Raleigh [Ralegh], Sir Walter, attrib
London:: G. Croom for Joseph Watts,, 1692.. 8vo.. Modern paneled calf in antique design, spine banded, title gilt, some darkening at edges. ?In the course of the 1650s several of Ralegh's texts were published or republished, and some works by others were attributed to him, notably Maxims of State and Cabinet Council, the latter published by John Milton. Plainly his name carried a powerful attraction for writers and publishers, either to sell works which were not actually his or to validate a message; but it is not always easy to identify the message. It is far from clear, for instance, whether Milton published Cabinet Council because he was offering it as an ironic criticism of Cromwell or because it gave advice on how best to endure tyranny. Ralegh seems to be supplied with varying identities by writers of the Commonwealth and protectorate: for some the representative of corrupt monarchies, for others the advocate of aggressive commercialism. The one thing that seems quite certain is that his name attracted interest and helped to sell books. [Oxford DNB] Although Milton believed that the manuscript he edited was by Raleigh, the attribution is doubtful. Cf. William Riley Parker, "Milton", p. 516-517, and J. Shawcross, "Milton Bibliography", 256. Originally published in 1658 as: The Cabinet-Council (Wing R156).

Johnson, Samuel
London: Printed For The Author, 1692. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Balance of title: "by the people of England from the regal throne and the promotion of The Prince of Orange, one of the Royal family, to the throne of the Kingdom in his stead was according to the constitution of the English government and prescribed by it." This is a slender little pamphlet reworked in neat pale green boards, boards measure 7 7/8 x 6 3/8". The Wing #821, placements, and SJ name are penciled lightly on first, replaced, endsheet. The grade above may be thought of as a compromise between the newish boards and the aged text. The spine label is black leather with gilt and a hint of wear at its edges The reworking with beige pastedowns and endsheets is very nicely done and compliments the lightly age darkened but largely unfoxed text. After the title page, verso blank, the text commences at page 3 running thru 62 followed by a page advertising Johnson's books, verso blank. Based purely on the appearance of text edges they may be as made, or perhaps, cropped in reworking. They have a uniform darkening seen edge on, which is not evident when the pages are looked at as though reading. The margins at fore-edge and bottom edge vary, but average 1"+. At top edge they commence at 1/16th" down from top to 3/8" at the last pages. Pages 21 and 22 have perhaps half of the marginalia (text edge printed noting) cropped at fore edge. Text itself is legible, trace waviness, microscopic dog ear, some larger corrected dog ear. very sharp looking. The books boards have an imp … [Click Below for Full Description]

ERCKER, Lazarus
Frankfurt: Tampachs, 1692. Title page printed in red & black, and with a large woodcut vignette. Illustrated with 42 remarkable woodcuts (all large, many full-page), depicting mining, smelting & refining operations. Numerous large decorative initials and tailpieces throughout. [1], 134, [3] leaves. Short folio, full contemporary vellum (binding a bit soiled and worn but very firm; old signature on title; some pages toned but with very little foxing; pale dampstains at margin of fore edge on some leaves; several small professional repairs). Franckfurt am Mayn: Gottfried Tampachs, 1629. Fourth edition. Very Good. This work is Ercker's crowning achievement. It was highly prized in its time, and remained an important technical book for over 200 years because of its precise data concerning the fusion processes of gold, silver, copper, tin, iron, lead and mercury. "Ercker described laboratory procedures and equipment, gave an account of preparing the cupel, of constructing furnaces, and of the assaying balance and the method of operating it. He used as his model Agricola's De re Metallica, yet he was quite original and included on the procedures he himself had tested."-DSB IV 393. Ferguson I 242-5; Duveen 194-5 (both listing 3rd edition of 1598); Hoover 282; Partington I 104-7. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
