Jonson, Ben
London: Printed by Thomas Hodgkin ..., 1692. [12],264,281-368,371-2,371-382,393-744,[4]pp. Folio (signed in 4s; 14.5 x 9.25"; 368 x 237mm). Modern paneled dark brown calf, raised bands, gilt spine labels, with earlier gilding to all edges. Engraved portrait of Jonson engraved by Elder after Vaughn. Portrait and title a bit foxed, inky marginal smear to E31r; some old spotting to C2-4, 3A4 and 4C4-4D4; 3C1-2 on inferior paper (and tanned, as usual); top edge of 3Y3 shows a bit of slight fraying; other occasional marginal smudges, dusting or trivial spotting; otherwise, generally a very good, crisp copy. Third (and last) folio edition, but the first in one volume, adding "The New Inn" and "Leges Convivales," which were not included in the collected editions of 1616 and 1640. The characteristic poor paper and tanning of 3C1-2 often extend to 2Z2-3, which are here relatively unblemished. The final two leaves are turned over to the "Leges Convivales," with its own title and imprint. This copy, although in a modern binding, measures somewhat larger than the Hagen-Pforzheimer copy, which is noted as in original calf. ESTC R15282. PFORZHEIMER 561.

Florencia, Francisco de
En Sevilla: Por Thomas Lopez de Haro, 1692. 4to (20 cm; 7.75"). [7 of 8] ff., 194 pp., [2 of 3] ff., wanting one leaf of preliminaries and final blank. First edition. This major history of the Apparition of Archangel Saint Michael to the Indian Diego Lararo de San Francisco in the region of Santa Maria Nativitas, province of Tlaxcala, in the Spring of 1613, is from the pen of a noted Jesuit author who has the distinction of being the earliest known Florida-born author. Florencia (1619–95) entered the => Jesuit Order in 1642 and was a noted preacher and highly regarded author. In addition to recounting the story of the apparition, the author compares and contrasts it with apparition of Virgin of Guadalupe and Nuestra Senora de Remedios and he does the same for the Indians who experienced the apparitions. Additionally he tells of the shrine constructed for St. Michael, the religious art that was created for the shrine, and, of course, he studies the miracles attributed to the holy spot and its well and assesses the reliability of the testimony asserting the miracles. In a later part of the volume Florencia chronicles the springing up in other parts of New Spain of shrines to St. Michael. The work ends with the antiphony and prayers used at the shrine in Tlaxcala and with the novena to St. Michael and an explanation of the same. The work is in Spanish but => there is a passage in Nahuatl on p. 199. Provenance: Late 19th-century ownership stamps of A. Gonzalez Nunez, two partially inked over or partially erased. There is bad cataloguing relating to this work. An edition wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

43 folding engraved plates. 8 p.l., 301, [1] pp., one leaf of ads. 4to, attractive modern crushed morocco (minor browning), double gilt fillet round sides, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. London: B. Tooke, 1692. First edition and a lovely copy of the first treatise on optics published in English. This was for many years the standard work in Britain. "It was intended as a complete and clear account of current optical knowledge independent of any hypotheses concerning the nature of light. Appended to it was Halley's famous theorem for finding the foci of lenses. A popular text, it was reprinted in 1709 and provided a scientific base for Berkeley's Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision. The book was widely distributed, and Molyneux personally sent copies to Newton, Halley, Locke, Hooke, Boyle, Flamsteed, and Huygens. Its publication ended his friendship with Flamsteed, who, according to Molyneux, took umbrage at the lack of prominence accorded his work... "In the dedicatory epistle, Molyneux lavishly praised Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding; Locke's letter thanking him initiated a lengthy correspondence that was ended only by Molyneux's death in 1698."-D.S.B., IX, p. 465. "The first part presented 59 propositions on geometrical optics, providing a thorough treatment of the nature of sight and the properties of lenses, telescopes, microscopes, and magic lanterns. The second part consisted of a series of chapters on topics including refraction and light, glasses for defective eyes, and telescopic instruments. In treating re … [Click Below for Full Description]
