Le Clerc, Jean
London: Awnsham & Churchill, 1692. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. Two parts in one volume. [12], 182, [2], [8], 199 [i.e. 190] pp. Contemporary English sprinkled calf, expertly rebacked, original endleaves preserved (browned and a bit brittle; inner hinges strengthened with brown paper). As commonly, this early English "trade" binding did not have endpapers bound in. Title-page with 1" tear between two lines of text (not affecting any words). Blind-stamps of the Theological Institute of Connecticut (now known as the Hartford Seminary) on first and final leaves. NB: in 1976 a collection of more than 200,000 books from the Hartford Seminary Library were sold to Emory University, including this one --> deaccessioned from Pitts Theology Library. Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736), a Swiss Protestant by birth, was one of the outstanding figures in Anglo-Dutch intellectual history. A prolific author, he edited three great encyclopedias comprising eighty-three volumes which were very influential in the development of the Age of Reason. The present work was written as a textbook for his own students and was used at Cambridge as a standard text for many years, going through five editions by 1716. Part I is prefaced by a four-page dedication to Robert Boyle; Part II begins with a four-page dedication to John Locke. (Le Clerc was also the author of the first biography of Locke. The author's argument throughout generally follows that of Locke. Part III is distinctly anti-Cartesian. Numerous early ownership inscriptions, the most interesting (to us) is that "Paul Droilhet" who … [Click Below for Full Description]

Limborch, Philippi a. (Philipp van Limborch)
Amstelodami (Amsterdam): Apud Henricum Westenium, 1692. First edition. Hardcover. Fair-Good. Folio. [16], 384, [12]pp (Index), [8], 397, [19]pp. Original spotted calf with gold lettering and tooling on spine. Raised bands. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's sticker (Jose Maria de Mello*) on inside of front cover. Vignette on red and black lettered title page. Decorative initials. This remarkable work consists of a record of sentences given by the Inquisition of Toulouse (Southwestern France) between 1307 and 1328, and is preceded by an account of the origin and methods of the Inquisition. Van Limborch's "Liber Sententiarum Inquisitionis Tolosanae" is still considered important nowadays for its meticulous transcription of a manuscript by the Dominican inquisitor Bernard Gui long regarded as lost forever, but rediscovered in London (British Library, ms. Add. 4697). This volume is complete with its 10 striking engravings in 9 plates (including 4 folded). 2 of the plates are signed by Adriaan Schoonebeek**. Heavy rubbing along edges of binding. Hinges starting, but covers still attached. Moderate and sporadic foxing and age-toning throughout. Text in Latin. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+, plates in very good condition. About the author: Philipp van Limborch (1633-1712) was professor of theology at the seminary of the remonstrants in Amsterdam. FOIGNY, Gabriel de.
Paris: Claude Barbin, 1692. Octavo, in contemporary mottled calf, spine panelled in gilt; fine armorial bookplate on front pastedown. A revised edition, prepared by François Raguenet, possibly from a manuscript by Foigny himself. The dangerously heretical nature of the first edition has been tempered here by concentrating on the fabulous rather than the social and political. One of the earliest and best of all imaginary voyages to Australia, Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first time that the term was used to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent. Foigny (c.1650-1692) had a turbulent life. A promising career as a Franciscan monk was scotched by his 'licentious behaviour' and he was forced to flee to Geneva and Protestantism. The narrative purports to be the dying gift of the sailor Sadeur to an anonymous narrator. Twice kidnapped and four times shipwrecked, Sadeur only survives when he is plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which fortuitously drops him on the shores of Western Australia. Ashore, his luck continues: as an hermaphrodite himself (the Jesuit priests called him male as a convenience) Sadeur is especially acceptable to the hermaphroditic, asexual society that he discovers. The Australians' utopian rejection of the body is responsible for their society's rationality and harmony. In this world Sadeur's curiosity and levity about the topic is considered very de trop, yet worse his 'propensity to unseemly arousal' (Rees). As in many imaginary voyages - Swift's Houhnyhyms, and their debates … [Click Below for Full Description]

He also contributed the first of the two magnificent engraved title-pages, showing an allegorical triptych painting surrounded by an architectural border adorned with statuary. The 12 plates by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) are adaptations of his illustrations for Govert Bidloo's magnificent book, Komste van zyne majesteit Willem III, honoring William III's state entry to attend a meeting at The Hague of allies in league against Louis XIV. They depict the triumphal arches constructed for the great entry, three of the original arches were designed by de Hooghe himself. Villavicencio, Diego Jaimes Ricardo.
Puebla de los Angeles: Imprenta de Diego Fernandez de Leon, 1692. 4to (21 cm; 8.25"). [14] ff., 36 pp., pp. 40–131, 133–36; 51, [1 (blank)] pp., [1] f. Personal experience among various indigenous people of differing regions of Mexico sets this treatise apart from the garden variety of other books by Villavicencio's contemporaries on surviving pre-Contact religious practices. One normally searches hard to find information on religious practices among the late 17th-century Chocho speakers of Oaxaca and Veracruz, for example, but some interesting tidbits can be found here — though the greatest portion of the volume is dedicated to practices among the various Nahuatl-speaking peoples, as they were viewed by Europeans as the norm for pre-Conquest practices. In fact, there is a confessionary in Nahuatl that speaks specifically to indigenous practices on pp. 11–19 of the second pagination.    In addition to supplying firsthand practical information about native post-Contact survivals (e.g., the lengthy list found on pp. 49 and 50, second pagination, of sacrifice practices and superstitions that the Church frowned upon), the author displays considerable erudition on the subject of pre-Contact practices based on a huge body of published information, all of which is carefully documented.    17th-century Mexican imprints are ever increasingly difficult to find, and those produced in Puebla (as opposed to Mexico City) are the most difficult of all. This important treatise is => only the second complete copy we have had in our stock in more than 30 years of dealing in Mexicana.    Curi … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Richard Bently. 1692. "Second edition, small 8vo, pp. [4], 178; full contemporary sheep, 18th- century calf gilt-lettered spine laid down, red morocco gilt spine label; armorial bookplate of Strickland Freeman Esq. dated 1810 mounted to front pastedown; edges and hinges rubbed, else very good and sound. DNB II, p. 719: ""[Thomas Pope Blount's] 'Essays on several Subjects,'...is the only work in which he has an opportunity of displaying his individuality as a writer. The essays in the first edition numbered in seven in all. The first illustrates the proposition that interest governs the world, and that popery is nothing but an invention of priests to get money; the second is on the great mischief and prejudice of learning; the third treats of education and custom, lamenting that as children are apt to believe everything, when they grow up they are apt to settle in their first impressions; in the fourth, on the respect due to the ancients, the conclusion is arrived at that we ought not to enslave ourselves too much to their opinions; the fifth answers in the negative the question as to whether the men of the present age are inferior to those of former ages either in respect of virtue, learning, or long life; the sixth demonstrates that the passions are our best servants, but our worst masters; and the seventh attributes the variety of opinions to the uncertainty of human knowledge."" An eighth essay would be added to the third impression, concerning religion, and coming to the conclusion that the God men image is ""a picture of their own complexions."" [CICERO] GRONOVIUS, Jacob.
Lyon: Vander Aa, 1692. Eleven volumes, duodecimo, the first with four engraved folding plates, and all eleven volumes embellished with charming ornamental title-pages; a handsome set in mid eighteenth-century panelled calf with original labels. Attractively bound set of Cicero in eleven volumes, noted as 'respectable and correct' by Moss. The title-page boasts that the accuracy of the text arises from the editorial finesse of Dutch classical scholar Jacob Gronovius, whose portrait comprises the frontispiece to the first volume (curiously, the English literary lion Thomas Dibdin claimed the editorial attribution to Gronovius was spurious). Jacob Gronovius was the father of botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius, correspondent and patron of Carl Linnaeus and the author of a treatise on the native plants and herbs of Virginia. This is a considerable publication, continuously paginated for a total of 3611 pages. The folding engraved plates include the detail of an epigraphic tribute to Cicero and numismatic relics relating to the famed Roman orator. One part moderately water-stained, another with slight marginal worming, three of the folding plates repaired.

MONTAIGNE, Michel de.
Muller, Pop. proza 115; WorldCat (2 copies); for the frontispiece: Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXIV, p. 193, 69. An acclaimed Dutch translation by Jan Hendrik Glazemaker of Michel de Montaigne's deservedly famous essays. One of the essays is devoted to the "cannibals" of the New World and presents a highly idealized characterization of the Native Americans, governed by the laws of nature and still unspoiled by the vices of modern civilization, surpassing "all the pictures with which the poets have adorned the golden age, and all their inventions in feigning a happy state of man". The translation does not lack Montaigne's longest and most influential essay, on the 15th-century Catalan scholar Raymond of Sabunde, which expresses his extreme and perplexing scepticism, summed up in his motto "What do I know?".In very good condition, with modern annotations in pencil, some browning, slip with manuscript note on endpaper, joint of the front board cracked, but the binding still good. Montaigne's essays in a rare Dutch edition.
